        [Photograph]: African-American Aviator. Circa 1945

Wichita Falls, Texas: Raley Portraits, 1945. Fine. Portrait photograph of an African-American aviator. Measuring 3" x 5" gelatin silver print. Fine in about fine card frame and name of "Raley Portraits" on both mount and verso of the image. The unidentified aviator is pictured wearing a leather helmet and goggles, white scarf, and leather flight jacket. The patch on the jacket indicates that he served with the Army Airways Communications System (AACS) which began in 1943. While the patch is missing the white border that indicates post-WWII service, we cannot confirm the exact date of the photo. The aviator is unidentified, but with presumably a relatively small number of African-American pilots thus employed, further identification might require only some modest research.

Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz. 2 Bände. Leinen im Schuber [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz (Autor) Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat

Nicolai. Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat Das Werk "Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz" ist eine kommentierte Neuausgabe eines Ansichtswerkes über Schlösser und Herrenhäuser aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz

BOSNIAN UNDERGROUND PRINTING: ["S VJEROM U BOGA ZA KRALJA". PROTIV OTADŽBINE / "WITH BELIEVING IN GOD FOR THE KING". AGAINST THE FATHERLAND].

Small 8°, 102 pp. printed text in Latin and Cyrillic stript with photoreproductions and copies of documents, [1] index, original wrappers printed in red and black, with a photoreproduction on the cover (Very Good, small folds in edges, title page with a stamp with name of Vladimir Dedijer). - Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina: Sloboda, April 8, 1945. A rare underground printing by Bosnian Partisans against Chetniks, lead by Draza Mihailovic, was made in Mostar in April 1945, one month before the liberation of Yugoslavia. From the library of Vladimir Dedijer. - This extremely rare booklet was printed in Latin and Cyrillic by the underground printing press of the Bosnian National Liberation Army (Partisans), after their liberation of Mostar in Bosnia, in the last month of war in Yugoslavia. It gives the first hand reports and reproductions of the documents against the royalist army of Chetniks, lead by Draža Mihailovi? The Partisans took Mostar without resistance on February 14, 1945, after sieging Ustashe and Chetink strongholds a week before. Upon entering the city, the Partisans took a severe revenge on collaborating Christian monks from the Church of Saint Peter and Paul. This is the third and best edition of the publication. The first two, published from February 20, 1945, on were published in Cyrillic script and mimeographed. This edition was printed in 5000 examples according to the text on the last page. The title page bears a red stamp with a name of Vladimir Dedijer (1914 - 1990). Dedijer was a Partisan fighter and subsequently one of the most internationally prominent Yugoslavian historians and civil rights activists. He initially worked as a journalist, and this led him to travel to Spain where he supported the Republicans during that county’s Civil War. In 1941, he joined the Partisans where he attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel, becoming a close advisor to Marshall Tito. After the war he taught at the University of Belgrade and was appointed to the Central Committee of the Yugoslav Communist Party, but, in 1954, following a contretemps with Tito, was banished from all power circles. He left Yugoslavia in 1959, where he spent the rest of his life teaching and writing, associated with some of the world’s leading universities, such as Princeton, Stanford, Harvard and the Sorbonne. He became an internationally prominent human rights activist and an important historian of World War II and its aftermath. Bibliografija from 1964 mentions ony one example of the book in Yugoslavian libraries. Today we could not trace any examples in libraries worldwide. References: Bibliografija, no. 7626. (mistakenly quotes Aprl 4 as a date of publication).

Kurt Gerstein.

A Voyage Beyond the Seas (1346-1350).

Francican Press, Jerusalem 1945 - xlviii, [1], 143 pp., [1 errata], 18 figures including a frontispiece portrait and 1 map, tables, contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, title gilt on raised spine, original wrappers preserved, marbled endpapers, biblio, index, lower spine lightly rubbed, otherwise copy in mint condition, translated by Fr. T. Bellorini & Fr. E. Hoade. Niccolò da Poggibonsi was a Franciscan monk, who made a famous pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1345–50, which he described in Italian in his Libro d'oltramare. Niccolò, departed for Venice, from where he embarked on a sea voyage to Cyprus. He sojourned for some months on the island in the service of King Hugh IV. He then left for Jaffa, and from there visited the shrines in Jerusalem (where he served for four months in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre) and the myriad holy sites of Palestine. He went as far as Damascus intending to visit "Babylonia" and "Chaldaea" (probably Baghdad), which he never did. He left by ship from Beirut and stopped in Egypt, where he visited Alexandria, "Babylonia" (probably Fustat, Old Cairo), New Cairo, and the places in Sinai mentioned in the Old Testament. There he also visited the ancient Monastery of Saint Catherine. He continued north to Gaza and there turned back towards the Nile delta, where he took a ship from Damietta to Cyprus. In Cyprus he boarded a ship for Italy. The ship followed an adventurous course, taking him by the Anatolian coast of Ottoman Empire, to call in the port of Tripoli, and near Porec on the Adriatic, where he was captured by brigands but managed to escape. He arrived safe in Venice late in 1349 and went to Ferrara, where he was detained until the spring of 1350, when he finally, after five years of wandering, returned to Poggibonsi. The Libro d'oltramare was translated into German around 1467 by Gabriel Muffel of Nuremberg, who was probably working out of Passau. An illuminated manuscript (Egerton 1900) of the German translation from 1467, purports to be a description of Muffel's visit to the Holy Land in 1465. The earliest manuscripts of Niccolò's Libro are unillustrated, but the Egerton 1900 has 147 miniatures. Size: 4to. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Four collections of illustrated satirical anti-Nazi epigrams published during the last months of the German occupation of Czechoslovakia: 1. Herrenvolk. 11 epigram pana Jaroslava o teutonských spasitelích sveta [10 epigrams about the Teutonic saviors of the world]. 2. Herrenvolk. 26 epigramu o teutonských spasitelích sveta [26 epigrams about the Teutonic saviors of the world. Written 1939-1945]. 3. Epigramatikuv ?ivotní román [The epigrammarian's life story]. 4. Klání a porubání, nevázané my?lenky a ?e?i vázané [Battle and butchery, unconnected ideas and connected speeches]. Further included is a Christmas greeting card, with a drawing by Fr. Bidlo, published in December 1944

Václav Vavra; F. R. ?dárský, Czechoslovakia (Jaromer) 1945 - Various sizes, from 15 × 20 to 14.5 × 11.2 cm). Original embossed or printed card and paper wrappers; one title rebound preserving original wrapper and flaps; 12 leaves of full-page color plates with text to versos; 35, [4]; [35]; and 48, [3] pp. respectively. Two titles (3 and 4) signed and inscribed by the author. Four curious and scarce volumes of satirical anti-German epigrams, one of them with striking full-page color caricatures, others illustrated by the well-known caricaturist Franti?ek Bidlo (1895-1945). All books were ostensibly written during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and published right after the end of World War II ("in the beginning of the demise of the German master race," according to the colophon). Nos. 3 and 4 even claim to have been published -- obviously at great personal risk to anyone involved -- in late 1944 and in January of 1945, in "The Reich", and one bears an inscription dated July 8, 1944. The epigrams, in turns witty, silly, or plain graphomanic, are often puns on Nazi slogans; a few are partly or completely in German, e.g.: "Kennst Du das Land, wo Neid und Dummheit blüht? / Du kennst es nicht? - Es heisst Sudetengebiet." After annexing the Sudeten region in 1938, Hitler proceeded to invade the Czechoslovak Republic in 1939, establishing the Protectorate that fell only with Germany's capitulation after the war. According to KVK and OCLC, 1. is held by Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Hoover and Yale, 2. only by Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and 3. and 4. can be found at the Czech National Library and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.         Supplement One: The American Language

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1945 - First edition. Fine in modestly age-toned, near fine dustwrapper with a short tear at one fold. Nicely Inscribed by the author to an important literary editor: "My venerable colleague Bernard Smith to recall our joint sweatings for art and truth. H.L. Mencken. Aug. 20, 1945." Smith was editor-in-chief at Knopf where he was known for editing B. Traven, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Langston Hughes, and many others. In 1947 he migrated to Hollywood where he was involved in the production of such films as *How the West Was Won*, *Elmer Gantry*, and* Cheyenne Autumn*. Smith shared a sometimes contentious relationship with the sharp-tongued Mencken, who once called Smith "a Jew, and moreover, a jackass." A significant association.
