Letter from Brin Irene to Countess Pecci Blunt

1945 - "L. T. S. addressed to Contessa A. L. Pecci-Blunt. Rome, April 7, 1945. 2 pp. Front and back, with free-handwritten corrections, some red-typed words and blue ink "Sender" stamp. Perfect condition. Maria Vittoria Rossi, the Great Lady of the Twentieth Century, became famous under the pseudonym attributed by Leo Longanesi of Iren Brin, but not only. Idro Montanelli, his friend, wrote that she had a "chameleonism that seems to be borderless." She was a prolific writer, "Harper's Bazaar" correspondent to Italy, author of the famous correspondence book in "Settimana Incom (Incom Week)" with the pseudonym "Contessa Clara", a gallerist among the most important of the twentieth century in Rome, founder of "La Margherita" and then of the famous "L’obelisco" on the Sistina road, 146. As the Countess Pecci Blunt, she was a patron. She was an icon of style and elegance, queen of what then would had been called "café-society", halfway between culture and worldliness. And she was also the wife-friendship of Gaspero Del Corso, with whom she had an indissoluble relationship. Since just over a year, Rome had been proclaimed "open city", "Savinio had stopped bringing Basque ( ), Cecchi had illustrated Wild and portrayed many Americans (.), Tamburi had just returned from Capri where he was a guest of Malaparte, and De Chirico lived in Via Gregoriana and grew his mustache, Mafai had a major role in the Communist faction and Capogrossi had made a series of "Women". In this changing mood, among the exciting misadventure of the Brin-Corso's spouses (reduced to the penniless and he declared deserter), became evident the idea of gathering all those "deviant" artists and somehow continuing what Pecci Blunt had begun with La Cometa. It was a great success. Thus, was born the Obelisk gallery in 1946 with the first exhibition on Morandi and the last in 1978 with Tina Modotti. Among the hundreds of proposals, often there were some worldly and commercial proposals, but also some that became historical. All the avant-garde of the fifties and sixties would be walking by hence, as well as all the classics of the post-war era: Afro, Capogrossi, Fountain, Burri, Pomodoro next to Sironi, Morandi, De Chirico, Balla, Campigli. And for the first time in Italy the great foreigners: Matta, Magritte, Kandinsky, Moore, Calder, Dalí, Bacon, Rauschenberg. The object may be located and shipped from Italy, France or UK. L. T. S. indirizzata alla Contessa A. L. Pecci-Blunt. Roma, 7 aprile 1945. 2 pp. fronte e retro, con correzioni aggiunte a mano libera, alcune parole dattiloscritte in rosso e timbro "Al mittente" inchiostro blu.

The archive offers a detailed portrait of one enlisted soldier's military career, from his 1943 induction order to his 1945 discharge papers, in a variety of media. Among the items included are: Lucchina's full army uniform and insignia; target photo charts for Breslau and Bratislava, dated September and October 1944, respectively; a typed list of "Important Dates," presumably compiled himself; photographs of the unit's snowy headquarters in Pantanella, Italy, many captioned on the back; a mimeographed 14 pp "History of the 464th Bombardment Group from Activation until VE-Day" written entirely in rhymed couplets, and of which we find no other record; the yearbook for Lucchina's 1944 Army training class at Colorado State College of Education, autographed by his fellow classmates and the school's canine mascot, Queenie; a matchbook cover from the Army training center in Pocotella, ID; Allied Military currency; a small personal mirror; three dog tags; various military identification and ration cards; HQ memos; a variety of sightseeing material; five V-mails and seven telegraphs sent to his wife, Alice; and two reunion booklets for the 464th from 1982 and 1986. Evo Lucchina grew up in Barre, VT, and owned a granite company there as well as part of his father's company by the time he was inducted into the Army. Thirty-seven years old at the time, Lucchina was one of the "old men" in Class 6A-44 at CSCE in Greeley, CO, with a droll sense of humor (his occupation in the yearbook is listed as "fish monger"); he was sent to CSCE after he fractured his left fibula during Basic Training in Atlantic City, and graduated from a clerical course in engineering and operations in October of 1943. He arrived at the Army airfield at Pantanella -- "a wheat farm between Canosa di Puglia and Lavello (Lucania)" [from list of "Important Dates" in scrapbook] -- in March 1944, where he served until May 1945.

[LITHOGRAPH PROOF] VISUAL HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA [SIGNED BY THE ARTIST]

New York (Jaffe) ; Winnipeg (K. Bileski). 1945. Matted. 1st Edition Heliochrome Lithograph, signed by Arthur Szyk. Image is 6 ½ X 8 inches. In an attractive red mat. A signed Holocaust-era proof copy from Arthur Szyk's Visual History of Nations series, dated 1945 on the back with the editors margins handwritten for publication (on the back) . The Visual History of Nations series consists of highly illuminated and brilliantly designed visual histories of individual founding and member countries of the United Nations. This series of images was commissioned in 1945 by Canadian philatelist and entrepreneur Kasimir Bileski and was originally referred to as The United Nations Series. Each print was created as an exquisite frontispiece and title page for a unique international stamp album. “Arthur Szyk, a master of iconic symbolism, employed his meticulous talents as a historic researcher to create this highly informative Visual History of the United States. Presiding over the illustration is the Great Seal of the United States. The American bald eagle, the national bird, clasps an olive branch (representing peace) and 13 arrows (one for each founding colonial state, representing war) in its talons. In its beak is a scroll with the Latin expression E Pluribus Unum (Out of many, one) , referring to the synthesis of a single nation out of the 13 originating states. The original states are further indicated by the 13 red and white stripes on the shield in the center of the Great Seal. The 48 white stars on circular blue backgrounds that appear throughout this illumination stand for the 48 states then in the United States (Alaska and Hawaii achieved statehood after Szyk's painting was completed) . A beaver, a buffalo, a red squirrel, and a black bear are ensconced within the decorative scrollwork. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) Very Good Condition. (PAINT-1-19) .

        Winston Churchill.

Black and white photograph of Winston Churchill, while he was the first Lord of the Admiralty. Boldly signed "Winston S. Churchill 1945." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14.5 inches by 16 inches. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupied by foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War, and a UK-backed coup d'?tat in Iran. Domestically his government laid great emphasis on house-building. Churchill suffered a serious stroke in 1953 and retired as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained a Member of Parliament until 1964. Upon his death aged ninety in 1965, Elizabeth II granted him the honour of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.

Third Army: A Brief History of Operations in Europe.

Prepared by G-3 Historical Sub-Section, 1945. First edition. Quarto, original wrappers as issued. Boldly signed on the title page by General George S. Patton. In near fine condition. Contains two photographic images and a color fold out map. Rare and desirable signed by Patton. General George Smith Patton was a senior officer of the United States Army who commanded the United States Seventh Army in the Mediterranean and European theaters of World War II, but is best known for his leadership of the U.S. Third Army in France and Germany following the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Born in 1885 to a family with an extensive military background (with members having served in the United States Army and Confederate States Army), Patton attended the Virginia Military Institute and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He studied fencing and designed the M1913 Cavalry Saber, more commonly known as the "Patton Sword", and partially due to his skill in the sport, he competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Patton first saw combat during the Pancho Villa Expedition in 1916, taking part in America's first military action using motor vehicles. He later joined the newly formed United States Tank Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces and saw action in World War I, commanding the U.S. tank school in France before being wounded while leading tanks into combat near the end of the war. In the interwar period, Patton remained a central figure in the development of armored warfare doctrine in the U.S. Army, serving in numerous staff positions throughout the country. Rising through the ranks, he commanded the 2nd Armored Division at the time of the American entry into World War II.

Four years before becoming Israel's first President, as war was still raging in Europe, Chaim Weizmann thanks a noted Polish-born artist teaching in Jerusalem for planting trees in Palestine in memory of his mother.

Rehovot, Palestine, March 4, 1945. 4.75" X 6.75". "Typed Letter Signed ""Chaim Weizmann"" as president of The Jewish Agency for Palestine, one page, 4.75"" x 6.75"". Rehovot, March 4, 1945. To Mordechai Ardon-Bronstein, Bezalel Art Academy, Jerusalem. In Hebrew, translated. In full, ""Please accept my deep thanks and gratitude for the trees that you and your pupils are planting in my mother's name. It is indeed a noble thought and I thank you for it. At this opportunity I would like to thank you again for the nice box that you have sent me for my 70th birthday."" Over 100 years ago, the Jewish National Fund began to replenish the native vegetation of the Holy Land that had disappeared or been destroyed. From Isaiah 41:19, ""I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together, so that people may see and know, consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it."" Planting a tree in Israel in memory of a loved one continues today. Dr. Weizmann wrote this letter from his home in Rehovot, one week after his birthday, on stationery of The Jewish Agency for Palestine, Jerusalem. When chemist Chaim Weizmann was sworn in as first President of Israel in Jerusalem four years later on February 17, 1949, he evoked the memory of his parents is his oath: ""I, son of Ozer and Rachel Weizmann, undertake as President of the State to maintain allegiance to the State of Israel and its laws."" Weizmann's Rehovot home and its gardens where he is buried are now a national memorial. Dr. Weizmann had founded a research institute in Rehovot in 1934; it was renamed the Weizmann Institute of Science a year before he wrote this letter. Polish-born painter Mordechai Ardon-Bronstein (1896-1992) had studied art at the renowned State Bauhaus Weimar in Germany after World War I; its teaching staff included Albers, Gropius, Kandinsky, and Klee. When the Nazis shut its doors in 1933, Ardon-Bronstein left Germany and settled in Jerusalem. In 1943, he became director of the Bezalel, Palestine's leading art school. In 1952, President Weizmann appointed him artistic adviser to the Ministry of Education and Culture. Ardon-Bronstein's abstract works hang in museums including New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's Tate Gallery. Two torn file holes at bank right margin, creases at upper and lower left corners, one touching the final letter of Weizmann's signature. Fine condition."

Engravings by Clifford Webb. Tall octavo (310 x 184 mm). Original vellum, titles to spine gilt, vignette to covers gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in the orange cloth slipcase. Wood-cut frontispiece, vignette title page, and 4 full page wood-cuts. A fine copy. First edition in English, signed limited issue of 500 copies, of which 100 were specially bound in full vellum; this copy being number four. Additionally inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Gathorne, from a tired Crusader, this account of those who enjoyed on the road to Jerusalem 'a Happy Martyrdom,' Somerset de Chair, Wingfield Morris Orthopaedic Hospital, 11 November 47". The recipient, Dr Gathorne Robert Girdlestone, was a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon and the founder of the hospital. A characteristic output of the Golden Cockerel Press, which also published de Chair's The Golden Carpet (1943), and The Silver Crescent (1943). These works detail his military exploits in the Middle East; de Chair served as an intelligence officer with the 4th Cavalry Brigade during the Anglo-Iraqi War and the Syrian Campaign. The gesta francorum, often considered one of the most valuable contemporary crusader accounts, was written c.1101 by an anonymous author connected with Bohemond I of Antioch.

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder

Chapman & Hall 1945 - Revised edition. Original red cloth lettered in gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "For Father Devas from Evelyn Waugh 1945". A very good copy, slightly cocked, with a faded spine and wear to its ends. A fine association copy of Waugh's best known work, inscribed to the priest Waugh found to give deathbed absolution to his friend Hubert Duggan, inspiring the deathbed scene at the climax of Brideshead. Waugh recalls bringing Father Devas to Duggan's bedside in his diary entry of 13 October 1943, "he gave Hubert absolution. Hubert said, 'Thank you father,' which was taken as his assent. "The affect of this on Waugh was profound. "In concrete and immediate terms, the repentance and death of Hubert Duggan provided an obvious link between the secular, hedonistic world of Waugh's youth on which he looked with nostalgia and the enforced asceticism of the present - the first a preparation for the second - and between the physical deprivations and psychological disappointments and apprehensions of the present and the promise of a future in which all would in the providence of God be well." - Davis (Evelyn Waugh, Writer) The incident was obviously the catalyst for Brideshead: Waugh's diary records starting work on the novel some nine days later, and the deathbed scene was, for Waugh, the very crux of the narrative, a view he makes plain in a letter to Ronald Knox of May 1945, "I am delighted you became reconciled to B.R. in the end. It was, of course, all about the death bed. I was present at almost exactly that scene, with less extravagant decor, when a friend of mine whom we thought was in his final coma and stubbornly impenitent, whose womenfolk would only let the priest in because they thought him unconscious, did exactly that, making the sign of the cross. It was profoundly affecting and I wrote the book about that scene." Waugh viewed and referred to Brideshead as his Magnum Opus and in a quest for perfection he tinkered with it right up to and beyond publication. It has been thought that this 'revised edition' was published in advance of the first trade edition. In a letter to Tom Driberg, Waugh suggests as much, "'Revised' from an early edition for for private circulation.". However, a comparison of early editions shows that differences from the first edition are present in the revised edition and later printings, suggesting that it was issued shortly after the first edition.         PILOT'S FLIGHT LOG BOOK.

1945 - (WWII) Gatti, Larry. PILOT'S FLIGHT LOG BOOK. No place, (1945). 36p, 5 1/4"x 7 1/2", immitation leather, vg in protective case. Gatti (1920-1974) served in WWII from 1942-45, enlisting in Queens, NY. He was a 2nd Lieutenant and co-pilot in the 95th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force. The log is a manuscript record of over 400 flights from his student practice flights & landings at Harris Field, MO, to "1st solo ride" to acrobatics and solo cross country, formation and instrument flying, to Boeing Fortress training at Sioux City. The log continues with B-17 flights to Labrador, Iceland, Scotland and practice in England and then records 35 raids into Germany (Oct. 1944-Mar. 1945), on Cologne, Berlin, Chemnitz, Bremen etc. and names specific targets: synthetic oil plant, Folke Wolfe plant, marshalling yards, bridges and railroads. From the dates and places Gatti would have been participating in both operations "Thunderclap and Clarion" which were designed to paralyze German troop and supply movement near the end of the war. Unfortunately these operations were carried out in heavy civilian areas and led to German accusations of "Terror" bombing. After his combat tour ends, he records flights moving B- 17's & crews near Paris, Brussels & London. Laid in is a Catholic prayer card (in Italian) which we assume he carried with him on flights.         Original Watercolor Studies for 'A Little Fur Family'

n.p.: n.p., 1945. Fine. Two preliminary paintings for 'Little Fur Family' which was first published in 1946. On paper. Measures approx. 7 by 8½ inches, and each one has additional margin on one side, each with William's signature. While these are separate studies, they seem to be intended as a double spread or a cover as they flow together beautifully. The left hand image is a forest scene with waterfall, and the right image shows the Fur Family with the Little Fur Child playing with his red ball. The images are matted together to form a continuous picture in a mat 16 by 20 inches. Although not used in the first edition of the Little Fur Family, a similar scene was used in the later printings as the cover, after the fur had been discontinued. Images are fine and bright with strong signatures. Accompanied by a copy of a later edition showing the final artwork.

The eponymous child hero, Pippi, is a nine-year-old redheaded orphan who is bold and resourceful with superhuman strength and ingenuity. Poignantly believes her mother to be an angel and imagines that her father, who was lost at sea, is living an exotic life as a Cannibal King in a far distant land.
