        Animal Farm. A Fairy Story.

London, Secker & Warburg, 1945. Original gree full cloth with original printed green and grey dust jacket, not price-clipped. Capitals of cloth spine faded. Dust-jacked with small lacks of paper at capitals (where cloth is faded and a few, small tears at extremities. A very small piece of paper loss at lower part of back on the dust-jacket. Lines of fairly light brown spotting (rust?) to front of dust-jacket. An old owner's name to front free end-paper. All in all a fine and sound, completely unrestored copy - the fragile dust-jacket, which is made of recycled war-time paper, is often found in very poor condition.. First edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century, the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it, with this work, he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". (Orwell, "Why I Write"). "Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution, but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own, but also the greed, indifference, ignorance, shortsightedness, wickedness, etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944, when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain, among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly, it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers, and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear, it became a great commercial success, however, probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century. The original subtitle "A Fairy Story" was dropped when the book was published in the United States, and all but one of the translations omitted it

        Animal Farm: A Fairy Story

Secker & Warburg London: Secker & Warburg. 1945. Second edition, printed in the same month and year as the first edition (August, 1945). Green cloth, stamped white spine title. Contemporary owner's gift inscription neatly penned on front fly verso, minimal foxing, else near fine in an about very good dustwrapper with extremities worn, short tears and creases. A brilliant, classic anti-utopian short novel, in which a cast of barnyard animals reenact the events of the Russian Revolution and the betrayal of its more humane elements by Stalin. Well-adapted both as a 1955 cartoon and a 1999 cable movie using the latest animal-special effects, though both versions added upbeat endings to Orwell's harrowing vision. A presentable copy. Connolly 100. .

Autograph Letter Signed ("John") to Burgess Meredith and Paulette Goddard, from Cuernavaca, regarding the filming of THE PEARL, and other matters

Hotel Marik, Cuernavaca, Mexico, "june - (toward the front)", [1945]. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. One page in ink on recto of a single sheet ruled note paper. Very good. From the Estate of Burgess Meredith . UNPUBLISHED letter written from Cuernavaca, while Steinbeck was in Mexico "riding herd" on the shooting of the film version of THE PEARL Dear Buzzy and Paulette: I've forgotten where you live. I've forgotten Milly's [i.e., LEWIS MILESTONE'S] street number too but at least I remember his street. We don't live at the hotel but we get our mail there. I know Paulette knows the place. We have a little house with a big garden about half a mile from the plaza - very pleasant. Will be here until October I guess. We don't start shooting [THE PEARL] until August. I don't suppose there is much chance of your coming down after you finish the Chambermaid [ Meredith's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID]. Blumey was asking about you the other night when we were in town. We're getting lots of sun and oddly enough a lot of work done, a thing I can hardly believe. I wonder how your film ["Diary of A Chambermaid"] goes. I have some ideas for the future - too many but perhaps worth discussing some time. Tom grows like a bloody weed. He is so black we will have trouble getting him into a hotel in Georgia. And he is very strong and no intellectual company whatever. Gwyn thrives here. Anyway, we'll see our picture through here and then go on to New York in October and after that we have no plans. ... The grapevine has nice things to say about your picture. And Renoir is a great man. I've always wanted to work with him. The rains are just starting here and the fine big clouds all day. It's pretty wonderful. Please give our love to Kendal and Milly. And to yourselves. JOHN" [with:] Telegram from Steinbeck's wife Gwendolyn in New York, to Burgess Meredith in Monterey, Calif., conveying Steinbeck's address in Cuernavaca: "Dear Buzz, John is in Mexico Address Hotel Marik Cuernavaca Mor. Mexico ... Gwen in New York."

        Lord's Prayer"

NY, 1945. A stunning original painting in ink and gouache by the renowned illustrator Arthur Szyk, signed and dated by the artist. The painting measures 7 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches, on illustration board measuring 12 by 9 1/4 inches. This illustrated Lord’s Prayer is comprised of fourteen calligraphed lines, illuminated in bright colors in the style of a medieval manuscript. Along the left margin of the page is an intricate border, incorporating portraits of people praying, including a little boy kneeling with his hands folded. A floral border extends along the bottom of the page, and tiny, delicate curls of tracery fill in the border and extend along the top edge. Szyk’s work is characterized by its minute detail, and his style is very much in the tradition of Eastern miniaturists. Szyk was born in Lodz, Poland in 1894. His artistic talents became evident at an early age, and he was sent to Paris to study at the Académie Julian when he was a teenager. He was a prolific illustrator of books, many of which were of Jewish content, including his masterpiece, The Haggadah. After World War II, Szyk moved to the United States, where he became one of the chief artists for the Limited Editions Club and contributed illustrations and caricatures to several magazines. This illustration was published in the January 1946 edition of Coronet magazine, inside the front cover. Mounted and framed. On the sheet of illustration board, around the illustration, are publisher’s notes. Two small spots of tape residue, light soiling to margins, light toning; the painting is in fine condition.

Image size: 25 1/2 x 19 7/8 inches. 31 1/2 x 23 5/8 inches. This luxurious chromolithograph of a bouquet of flowers is after a painting by the celebrated Viennese porcelain painter, Joseph Nigg.         Kristina Collection.

A collection of 30 books and a playbill inscribed to Kristina Odelberg/Hedenblad, the woman whose name was used for the main female character in The Emigrant Novels, and with whom the author had an extramarital affair. Moberg's affair with Kristina Odelberg/Hedenblad was discovered through this collection of presentation copies. She was apparently of great importance to the author, who gave her these books, many of them with intimate inscriptions, between the years 1945 and 1969. The copy of Vår ofödde son (Our Unborn Son, 1945), a play which partly deals with an abortion, is the only book in the collection that has been bestowed with a fine binding, suggesting that this book/theme was essential to Kristina. The inscription to Kristina by the translator in the copy of the Danish edition of the same work, which says "this book, which is partly about you [...]", makes it clear. Not much is known about this woman. We know that she married an army officer in Linköping in 1948, the same year as Moberg went to the USA to start his research for The Emigrant Novels. This collection is of great importance since it throws new light on Moberg's production from 1945 and onwards. We will send a complete list of the collection on request

A Lion Is in the Streets

Faint crease to the edges of a couple of pages, still fine in fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a tiny nick at the corner of the crown. Signed by the author. Cagney starred in the 1953 Raoul Walsh film, about a clever and ruthless Southern politician, based in part on Huey Long (Langley's book preceded Warren's All the King's Men, but the latter was filmed first). Cagney's whole family was involved in this film: one brother was the producer, another was the story editor, and his sister had an important supporting role (indeed her character shoots Cagney's character). A very scarce wartime book, seldom found in this condition. .

Important Truman document written 5 days before FDR's death

Manuscript signed "Best wishes to Erans Finnegan / from Harry Truman," 5 pages, page one 8" x 3, pages two through five 8" x 12.5". Buffalo, New York. April 7, 1945. Waterstained, with edge wear, partial separations at folds, and internal tear. Completely legible with bold Truman signature. Good condition. A scarce speech transcript from an address delivered to the Erie County Democratic Committee only five days before he would assume the Presidency upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The transcript, entitled "The Job Ahead", is inscribed at the top of the first page: "Best wishes to Erans Finnegan from Harry Truman." Undoubtedly signed in the rare period based on the "now President U.S." inscription. The speech looks ahead to the state of the nation at and after World War II and reads in part: "...Prosperity, like peace, is an elusive state of affairs, which can easily be lost by neglect...America will never again permit the callous indifference, the economic and political inaptitude of the late twenties and early thirties to return to political power. No depression will be allowed to grow, like a Frankenstein monster, ultimately threatening our entire social structure...We hear much about the problem of returning veterans. Well, this time there surely will be no Bonus Army! Already we have created the Veterans' Bill of Rights, which contains a whole program for a modest repayment of our everlasting debt to thos to whom we owe our freedom...Fear has been expressed that when our fighting forces return these new workers might flood the labor market and threaten us with heavy unemployment...According to an official poll, after the war doubt one-fifth of our 18 million women employees will be anxious to return to their homes. These three and a half million women alone may provide sufficient jobs for most veterans seeking brief, about six million people may be expected to leave the nation's labor force when victory comes, while there are only about four million veterans ready to step into their places. Modern scientific discoveries should give rise to new important industries. Therefore, if our high production is maintained, or increased to meet the demands of peace, America may actually experience manpower shortages for some time in certain localities..."
