Image size: 25 1/2 x 19 7/8 inches. 31 1/2 x 23 5/8 inches. This luxurious chromolithograph of a bouquet of flowers is after a painting by the celebrated Viennese porcelain painter, Joseph Nigg. Signature and date lower right of image: "Jos. Nigg 1813". A celebrated Viennese flower painter, Josef Nigg studied under Johan Drechsler at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Vienna. Primarily a flower and fruit painter, Nigg was best known for his highly detailed still lifes on porcelain. Between 1800 and 1848 he became one of the foremost decorators at the Vienna porcelain factory, and his delicate paintings are considered some of the finest examples of the Austrian style. Examples of his superb work can be found in some of the best museums in the world, including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Known for his luxurious still lifes, Nigg paid close attention to every minute detail of the composition from bloomy roses to dewy peaches. This large chromolithograph is a lovely example of his intricate paintings and effortlessly conveys the luxuriousness and grandeur of his monumental designs. Kristina Collection.

A collection of 30 books and a playbill inscribed to Kristina Odelberg/Hedenblad, the woman whose name was used for the main female character in The Emigrant Novels, and with whom the author had an extramarital affair. Moberg's affair with Kristina Odelberg/Hedenblad was discovered through this collection of presentation copies. She was apparently of great importance to the author, who gave her these books, many of them with intimate inscriptions, between the years 1945 and 1969. The copy of Vår ofödde son (Our Unborn Son, 1945), a play which partly deals with an abortion, is the only book in the collection that has been bestowed with a fine binding, suggesting that this book/theme was essential to Kristina. The inscription to Kristina by the translator in the copy of the Danish edition of the same work, which says "this book, which is partly about you [...]", makes it clear. Not much is known about this woman. We know that she married an army officer in Linköping in 1948, the same year as Moberg went to the USA to start his research for The Emigrant Novels. This collection is of great importance since it throws new light on Moberg's production from 1945 and onwards. We will send a complete list of the collection on request

Important Truman document written 5 days before FDR's death

Manuscript signed "Best wishes to Erans Finnegan / from Harry Truman," 5 pages, page one 8" x 3, pages two through five 8" x 12.5". Buffalo, New York. April 7, 1945. Waterstained, with edge wear, partial separations at folds, and internal tear. Completely legible with bold Truman signature. Good condition. A scarce speech transcript from an address delivered to the Erie County Democratic Committee only five days before he would assume the Presidency upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The transcript, entitled "The Job Ahead", is inscribed at the top of the first page: "Best wishes to Erans Finnegan from Harry Truman." Undoubtedly signed in the rare period based on the "now President U.S." inscription. The speech looks ahead to the state of the nation at and after World War II and reads in part: "...Prosperity, like peace, is an elusive state of affairs, which can easily be lost by neglect...America will never again permit the callous indifference, the economic and political inaptitude of the late twenties and early thirties to return to political power. No depression will be allowed to grow, like a Frankenstein monster, ultimately threatening our entire social structure...We hear much about the problem of returning veterans. Well, this time there surely will be no Bonus Army! Already we have created the Veterans' Bill of Rights, which contains a whole program for a modest repayment of our everlasting debt to thos to whom we owe our freedom...Fear has been expressed that when our fighting forces return these new workers might flood the labor market and threaten us with heavy unemployment...According to an official poll, after the war doubt one-fifth of our 18 million women employees will be anxious to return to their homes. These three and a half million women alone may provide sufficient jobs for most veterans seeking work...in brief, about six million people may be expected to leave the nation's labor force when victory comes, while there are only about four million veterans ready to step into their places. Modern scientific discoveries should give rise to new important industries. Therefore, if our high production is maintained, or increased to meet the demands of peace, America may actually experience manpower shortages for some time in certain localities..."

        Erica and Peter

Pendle Hill, Wallingford, Pennsylvania: Hildegard Herbster. [no date - circa 1945]. First. First edition. Square octavo, [35]pp. Mimeographed; stapled wrappers with upper cover illustrations hand-colored. Text and simple line drawings mimeographed upon thick leaves similar to elementary school construction paper. Wrappers foxed, a few scattered and small paper defects; still a pleasing very good copy. Bunnies, bees, frogs; ducks and deer; coloring, scissors and paste: a curious unrecorded wartime children's book intended as a collection of simple pedagogical nature stories for young readers, and an activity book where boys and girls color and cut out the book's illustrations and then frame them with help from Mother. Pendle Hill, Wallingford Pennsylvania is a well-known Quaker community, very close to Philadelphia. Established in 1930, it served as a study center for the Quaker faith and as a nexus of spiritual culture to prepare Friends for future spiritual and cultural enrichment. Hildegard "Hillie" Herbster (1908--1998) was a Quaker artist who attended art school in Philadelphia and Germany during the 1930s. During World War II, she was a resident at Pendle Hill where she lived with her young daughter Erika (in the book seen as "Erica"). Mrs. Herbster taught art in nearby Yardley, Pennsylvania. At some point, Hildegard removed to Florida. In 1997, the Miami-Dade County, Florida Parks and Recreation posthumously awarded her the "In the Company of Women" honor. Given its hands-on and amateurish production, we speculate Erica and Peter was produced at Pendle Hill in small quantities and for a small audience. An afterthought, a small hand-cut typed scrap reads: "Copyright by Hildegard Herbster" and is affixed to the bottom of the title page. A Library of Congress copyright record is entered for this book with a 1945 date. Not surprisingly as a Quaker, Hildegard's husband, Ernest Herbster, was a registered conscientious objector during World War II andperformed alternative service. The gentle narrative of this rare children's books, showing a love and respect of nature, reinforces thepacifist tones of the Quaker belief system during the violent period of the second World War in which it was produced. No copies found on OCLC or any other online source at present. .

As We May Think.Boston: The Atlantic Monthly, 1945. First edition.

Extremely rare offprint issue of Bush's celebrated paper credited for originating the idea of hypertext and, by extension, providing many of the theoretical underpinnings for the World Wide Web. "Bush's article describes his proposed 'Memex' system for organizing, storing, retrieving, and linking information. Inspired by microfilm technology - which in 1945 represented the most advanced means of storing large amounts of information - Bush conceived of the Memex as consisting of a desk equipped with projection screens, buttons and levers, a keyboard, and a storage system designed to provide instant access to microfilmed books, periodicals, documents, photographs, etc. The Memex system would allow pieces of data to be linked into permanent 'information trails' dictated by the individual user's needs, which could be called up again and modified at any future date. The Memex thus represented (to Bush's mind) a mechanical analog of the associative faculty of the human brain, one whose function was to support and extend the powers of human memory and association. Bush's general exposition of the Memex concept, emphasizing the individual relationship between user and machine, had little or no influence when it was originally published. Only after the development of the personal computer and hyperlinks on the World Wide Web was Bush's paper resurrected as a remarkably early expression of ideas that were eventually realized in a different way on the Internet." (Hook & Norman).

From Gutenberg to the Internet 13.1; OOC 519.

The copy in the Origins of Cyberspace collection was the ordinary journal issue; we can find no sales records of this offprint issue, and no copies in any of the major libraries, or computer collections worldwide.. Offprint from the Atlantic Monthly, July, 1945, pp. 101- 108. Large 8vo: 264 x 189 mm. Fine self-wrappers, very clean and crisp
