Sponsored by the "Continental Daily Mail" under the auspices of "L'Association Francais d'Action Artistique" in aid of British and French Charities. The Exhibition is presented under the patronage of: The British Ambassador in Paris and Lady Diana Cooper. The French Ambassador in London and Madame Massigli.

(Paris: Printed by l'Imprimerie de Bobigny, 1945). First edition. Some chipping to spine portion, minor rubbing to wrappers, else very good. Program cover moderately stained. Spiral bound card wrappers, front wrapper with color lithograph by Christian Berard; 30 x 25.5 cm; unpaginated 46 pages advertisements, 84 pages text, 8 pages advertisements; illustrated with 3 tipped in color plates, many halftones from photographs, other illustrations. Program for the exhibit opening on September 12, 1945 at the Princes Galleries, Piccadilly, laid in. This "Review of French Fashion throughout the Years" showcased the emerging energy and inspiration of France's Haute-Couture industry following 5 years of German occupation. Fine fabrics and trimmings were in short supply after the war years and an exhibit in miniature was the perfect response to the reality of post-war shortages. Some 200 wire figurines were created by J. Saint-Martin from designs by Eliane Bonabel with molded features from original sculptures by Rebull. The manequins were dressed in creations by 41 of the leading French dressmakers and posed in theatrical scenes designed by Christian Berard, Beaurepaire, Jean Cocteau, Dignimont, Douking, Geffroy, Grau-Sala, Jean-Denis Malcles, Rebull, Saint-Martin, Touchagues, and Wakhevitch. The Exhibition originally opened at the Louvre and following the London appearance went on the exhibit at many European cities. In 1946 the exhibition was viewed in New York and San Francisco.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 67 ORIGINAL IMAGES TAKEN BY COL. ROBERT GRAY SWIFT AND COL. JAY D.B. LATTIN OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY SIGNAL CORPS

1945 - This album contains 67 high-quality b/w photographs, 41 taken by Col. Swift, the remainder taken by Col. Jay D.B. Lattin. Swift's photos are two sizes: the smaller, numbering 34 shots, with images measuring approx. 3 ¼" or 3 ½" by 5 ¼" or 5 ½"; and the larger, numbering 7 shots, measuring approx. 6" x 8 ½". Col. Lattin's photos are approx. 4 ½" x 3 ½" or 5 ¾" x 9 ½". Of the 67 images, 45 depict scenes in Algiers, Algeria (41 taken by Swift, 4 by Lattin). The remaining shots (all Lattin's) include scenes in Marseilles, Montargis, and Toulon. All photographs are labeled in Swift's very precise printing by hand. The album also contains originals, and some copies, of documents relating to Swift's postings April-May, 1945, Also present are two maps: folded map of Paris and the Metro system, and a one-page map of London and its Underground stops, along with a small four-page booklet on the Cumberland Hotel in that city. The physical album measures 11" x 14", post-bound white cloth bordered by red tape, and contains 50 pages. The album was created by Col. Robert Gray Swift, Signal Corps, with a hand-printed cover reading: "Trip to E.T.O./ [Signal Corps insignia]/ Spring-1945/ Algeria/ Col. R.G.Swift". All lettering throughout the album is in Swift's precise, draughtsman-like hand. Col. Swift (a "Lt. Col." in the earlier documents) was serving at the Central Signal Corps School at Camp Crowder, MO, when he and Col. Jay D.B. Lattin, (HQ, Second Service, Command, Governor's Island, NY) were ordered to report to Washington prior to being sent to Paris for 30 days to survey training installations there and to recommend improvements. (Document #1, April 10, 1945). On April 25, Swift receives a document (printed in French and English and accomplished by hand) signed by French General Merlin, (Chief Signal Officer of Ground Air and Naval Forces), "honouring him for his services" and authorizing Swift to wear the French Signal Corps insignia (Document #2). On May 2, 1945, Swift receives orders to go from E.T.O. Headquarters to Algiers for 10 days, along with Col. Hattin and Lt. Col. Paul Gilbert Raymond of the French Army (Document #3). The terms of Document #1 are then extended by 15 days (Document #4, May 16, 1945). On May 27, Swfit is ordered to London for 7 days (Document #5), and on May 30, (Document #6) he receives notification from the E.T.O. office that he is indeed authorized to wear the French insignia bestowed on him in Document #2. ~~ The photographs Swift takes in Algiers include highly evocative glimpses of the native populations in the streets and at the Casbah and public market, well as shots of French and American military personnel. Photos include birds-eye views, the mosque used as an air raid shelter, the King George Hotel (which was "Gen. Eisenhower's North African HQ"), the French Signal School, the Governor General's Palace and its guards, the "harbour", the Church of Notre Dame, ruins of an old Roman temple near the city, and the Christian Martyr's Tomb and its "keeper". Personnel at the French Signal School and French Radio Intercept Station are seen: two "Merlinettes" (i.e. women "pigeoneers" holding their birds), and Lt. Touche and other staff including two "French WACS". Three photographs document "Arab soldiers entertaining their military "guests" at an outdoor feast of pit-roasted lamb and side dishes. Lattin's five views of Algiers include the French Signal School and its staff, along with a mosque and worshippers. Of Col. Lattin's other photos, 6 were taken at the Montargis Signal School and include "German P.W.s", the School buildings and staff officers "at the officers' chateau", and a shot of Swift, Col. Raymond and the School Commandant together. Seven views taken in "Marsailles" (Marseille) include street scenes, Notre Dame church, the waterfront, and candids of the officers, including Le Man and Raymond. Also seen are two views of the waterfront at Toulons showing bombed buildings, and two of a "Mediterra [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[AMERICAN VOLUNTEER GROUP pilots. They were often tied around the neck to keep them warm while flying. *** A SINGLE CLOTH MAP PRINTED ON TWO SIDES: Number 34 SOUTHEAST CHINA shows from Nan-Ching at the North down to Tao-chuang-fou [ St. John Island], with Macau, Hong Kong, Canton. Off to the right is all of Formosa [Taiwan] as an inset. Army Air Force & Naval flyers "E & E" survival kit [Escape and Evasion], printed on thick silk parachute cloth. These maps were often worn by fighter and other air crew members as scarves to insure they would be with the downed airman if/when his plane or he had to parachute out into the sea or over land. Each air crew member carried among other survival supplies, a .38 caliber pistol, survival knife, a signal mirror [stainless steel or glass], compass and some basic food rations, fishing kit, water purification tablets, along with minor medical supplies; the whole kit was tucked into the pant pocket of the flight suit. * The majority of these perishable maps have been lost during World War II and few if any others survived the attrition rate of war, time and climate prevented many from ever being brought back home. This map was given to fliers in the Pacific war against Japan, to insure downed fliers had some chance to navigate their way back to friendly forces. These maps are truly RARE and seldom found on the market. * Color scans can be sent by email. Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time.         ANIMAL FARM A FAIRY STORY

London: Secker & Warburg, 1945. Green cloth, stamped in white. Cloth sunned along top and bottom edges, as often, spine slightly cocked, but a very good copy for this book, in somewhat worn and soiled dust jacket (printed on the verso of surplus Searchlight stock) with shallow loss at crown of spine and two creased tears at top edge of upper panel showing offset from old repairs. First edition of the most widely known beast- fable in 20th century English letters. Published under wartime manufacturing constraints - albeit in a sizeable first printing of 4500 copies - this title has been difficult to locate collector's condition for some time now. A reprint was called for almost immediately, and the second printing of 10,000 copies was published later the same month. The work's popularity demonstrated, Harcourt ordered a first printing of the American edition consisting of 50,000 copies. MODERN MOVEMENT 93. FENWICK A10a.

Secret Agent X-9 (Original treatment and complete set of continuities for the serial)

Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, 1945. Original treatment (titled "Characters and Premise") and complete set of continuities for the 1945 13-episode film serial, including a continuity for the trailer, constituting a virtually complete record. Hammett debuted his Nazi-fighting agent in 1934 in comic book form, with artwork by the legendary Alex Raymond.         Les romans de Sartre. Manuscrit autographe

Naked City.

New York: Essential Books,, 1945. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to front cover and spine in dark blue. With the dust jacket. A unusually sharp copy in the remarkably nice dust jacket, with just a small chip at the top of the spine panel and a few further trivial snags at the tips, a few short closed tears and the odd mark. That said this is a truly exceptional copy, the vivid yellow and red at the spine is bright and fresh, the minor loss is really negligible when compared to the vast majority of other copies. A superb copy and deeply uncommon thus. First edition, first printing. Weegee's first book. His nickname (from the Ouija board) derived from his apparently psychic ability to beat authorities to the crime scene, a feat actually made possible by eavesdropping the emergency services on a portable police-band shortwave radio. He maintained a working darkroom in the trunk of his car in pursuance of this urgent street aesthetic. Naked City was his first book of photographs, and formed the foundation for the 1948 film of the same name.

ANN SAVAGE'S SIGNED CONTRACT FOR 'DETOUR'

Los Angeles: Producers Releasing Corporation, 1945. Original contract, printed and typed on off-white stock on recto and verso, measuring 8.5" x 19.25"; signed by Ann Savage and PRC's studio business manager on verso. A few horizontal folds smoothed out, with a single tiny chip at upper left corner; Very Good+. Ann Savage's signed contract with Poverty Row studio Producers Releasing Corporation [PRC] to star in the cornerstone 1945 film noir 'Detour.' A seminal document from a film for which ephemera of any kind is virtually unobtainable, showing that Savage was hired for three weeks to do the film (which is reportedly how long it took to shoot), that her character would be named Vera, that she would receive top billing for the female role, her address in Los Angeles, and her pay rate ($700 per week). All specific information added in manual type, initialed in several places, and rubber stamped 'PRC PRODUCTIONS' just above Savage's signature. A remarkable survival. National Film Registry.         Dali News: Monarch of the Dailies, Vol. I, No. I.

New York, 1945. Fragile and age-toned; nearly split at fold and with chips at edges and holes at one fold point within, but text and images are good. Folded in eighths, as acquired and held in plastic sleeve.. Salvador Dali. 4-page newspaper; regular news sheet with black type and bw illustrations. Fabulous, humorous, entertaining, cheeky, outrageous, Dali-at-his-best "newspaper" of which at least one volume with two numbers were published. Dali's wife-muse, Gala, figures prominently, of course. The main article (Dali Launches his Winter Offensive) is about the Dali exhibition at the Bignou Gallery in New York, held November 20th to December 29th, the catalogue for which features a caricature of Gala on the cover, as well as images of her in the exhibition. The newspaper also includes many of Dali's exceptional musings and b/w illustrations, with a very enlightening section on the Hieroglyphics of Mustache styles. Everyone should be lucky enough to have this, simply to make everyone smile and laugh! No copies found sold since 2008 ($1300+ at auction). Exceedingly rare.
