s.l.|(Paris): S.n. (Journal des débats), 1944. Fine. S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. - Autograph manuscript of the author of 2 and a half pages in-8 published in the issue dated 11 May 1944 of the Journal of Debates. Complete manuscript writing very dense, with many erasures, corrections and additions. Literary review published on the occasion of the release of air and dreams of Gaston Bachelard complete typescript is attached. Between April 1941 and August 1944, Maurice Blanchot published in the "Chronicle of the intellectual life" of the Journal of Debates 173 articles on recently published books. In a half-page newspaper (about seven pages in-8), the young author of "Thomas the Obscure" his first steps in the field of literary criticism and inaugurates a theoretical work that develop later Many in these essays, "The Share of fire" to "The Infinite Conversation" and "The Writing disaster." From the very first articles, Blanchot demonstrates a sharp analysis far beyond the current literature that motivates writing. Oscillating between classical and modern writers of the first order and minor novelists, he puts in his columns, the foundations of critical thinking which will mark the second half of the twentieth. Transformed by writing and by war, Blanchot breaks, over a thought exerted "on behalf of the other," with violent maurassiennes certainties of his youth. Not without paradox, then it transforms literary criticism philosophical act of intellectual resistance to barbarism at the heart of an "openly marechalist" newspaper: "Burning a book, write, are the two acts between culture which registered its oscillations opposites "(The Book, In Journal of Debates, January 20, 1943). In 2007, Cahiers de la NRF together under the direction of Christophe Bident all literary chronic unpublished volumes with critical analysis of the relevant work of Blanchot "novels, poems, essays give rise to a singular reflection, always safer his own rhetoric, delivered more to echo the impossible or the lure of extinction. (...) Not without contradictions or step aside, and the certainty of a feverish work begins (... ) these articles reveal the genealogy of a critic who has transformed during the chronicle necessity of thought. " (C. Bident). The autograph manuscripts of Maurice Blanchot are of great rarity.

1954/1959. Mit Anschreiben von Baumeisters Witwe Margaret Baumeister.

THE PEARL OF DEATH (Unique Screenplay Archive for the 1944 Universal Studios SHERLOCK HOLMES film adaptation based on Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons.")

Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1944. A. Conan Doyle (Bertram Millhauser, screenwriter). THE PEARL OF DEATH. Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1944. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of THREE original manuscripts: a preliminary revised draft, the final revised shooting script, and the final dialogue and continuity script. In short, a treasure trove of primary material relating to one of the most endearing and enduring film series of the 1940s. 1. Complete original studio-mimeographed brad-bound early draft script consisting of 108pp on studio-issued pink sheets, dated March 21st, 1944 and bearing production number 7189. Penciled signature on the cover of Marion Pecht, a secretary at Universal who appears to have been in charge of file copies. There are no other annotations. In Near Fine condition. 2. Complete original studio-mimeographed brad-bound shooting script consisting of 112pp on studio-issued white and blue revision pages, dated March 28th, 1944 with production number 7189 stamped on the cover. Also with Marion Pecht's ownership signature on the cover. No other annotations. The card covers are brittle and chipped as usual, but contents are fine. 3. Dated July 19th, 1944, the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script, bound with two brads at the top. In Very Good condition. THE PEARL OF DEATH was loosely adapted from Doyle's "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" (originally published in THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES in 1904) and featured the signature device of "The Borgia Pearl" hidden within one of six identical plaster busts of Napoleon but also, in Universal Studios fashion, it added a killer known as the "Creeper" who is probably the best-drawn villain in the series after Professor Moriarty. The film opened in New York on August 25th, 1944 to both popular and critical acclaim. Screenwriter Millhauser also wrote four other Universal Sherlock screenplays: THE WOMAN IN GREEN, SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON, SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH and THE SPIDER WOMAN, clearly the favored writer in the series. The twelve Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Pictures during the years 1942-1946 are legend; they are surely the best known screen-adapted adventures of English Literature's most iconic character and Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are still cherished, despite our current superb 21st century film and TV adaptations, as the definitive Holmes and Watson. Please check out the other Sherlock Holmes original screenplays we have in stock.. Signed. Original Manuscript. Original Wraps. Very Good.

Advertising Mock-up for Bourjois New York Cosmetics

[Circa 1944]. A collection of mock-ups and one photographic proof for several Bourjois New York advertising campaigns with several based on photographs by legendary fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld. They measure 9.5" x 12.5" and 11" x 14" with three on artists boards and two on art paper. Each mock-up has tipped-on photos or drawings of perfume bottles and one with a photograph of a glamorous model. The lone proof consists of a photographic reproduction of a completed ad with a shot of Blumenfeld photographing a model with the finished shot featured below. All in remarkably fine condition with only one tipped-on element lacking.Blumenfeld was the highest paid photographer in the world and the cover artist for American Vogue during the 1940s and 1950s. His use of non-traditional coloring for this Bourjois advertising campaign was lauded in the October 1944 issue of Popular Photography which called his work a "symphony of color harmony." Two of the mock-ups here undoubtedly used his original photographs as the basis for their compositions, adding hand lettering and pasted on elements. A less avant-garde photograph, possibly also by Blumenfeld, is featured on a different mock-up and is artfully torn along the bottom edge. The final mock-up is an original drawing by an unknown artist that features a debonair gentlemen walking toward a beautiful seated women in a flowing dress with the same pasted on perfume bottles as the others ads. Also included are six proofs of Bourjois advertisements including one for a mock-up in this collection.A wonderful archive of 1940s advertising mock-ups based on work by a world premiere fashion photographer. .

BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS. WWII Armament & Steam Locomotive Boiler Photographs

[Eddystone PA]: Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1944. Photographs individually housed in a transparent archival mylar sleeve, all bound-in a black, modern twin screw-post album, with title lettering gilt stamped to front cover. Album Binding - Fine. Photo quality - Nr Fine, with images generally sharp & clear.. 48 original black & white photos printed on glossy photo stock, most with date and negative numbers indicated at lower corners in images, as well as three with pen annotations & one with a BLH stamp to verso. Album: 9-3/8" x 11-3/4" This remarkable album of company photographic images vividly portray Baldwin's wartime military WWII production, showing their tanks, artillery, railroad guns, rolling stock, and steam locomotives, as dictated by the War Production Board. This photo archive begins with a series of photos of the M3 Medium tank, including the General Lee, General Grant, M31 Tank Recovery Vehicle, 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7, along with the M4 Sherman Tank. The photographs show the tanks on maneuvers, negotiating steep hills, driving in formation outside the Baldwin Locomotive factory in Eddystone, and even the firm's president, Charles Brinley riding in an M3. This followed by a series of images showing the manufacture and delivery of the 8-inch Railway gun mount, the Barbette Carriage constructed so that it was capable of a 360-degree traverse, and 45-degree elevation, designed primarily for use as a coastal defensive gun. The photos portray the construction of the mountings, the barrels, and pumps necessary for elevating the gun, and the delivery ceremony when it was officially turned over to the Army Ordnance Department on Feb. 7, 1941. This gun was capable of hurling a 260- pound shell a distance of 18 miles. Brigadier General R.W. Case, Commanding General of Watertown Arsenal, and Major D.N. Hauseman, Executive Officer, Philadelphia Ordnance District officially accepted the gun from Charles E. Brinley, also pictured in the photos. This was the first railroad gun manufactured by Americans since 1918, and several are shown in various stages of manufacture on the factory floor. The concluding group of images show the fabrication of steam boilers for Steam locomotives and machined fittings, as well as rolling stock tenders, and switchers. Unfortunately for Baldwin Locomotives, the War Production Board ordered them to produce only steam locomotives and diesel-electric yard switching engines depriving them of the chance to develop their diesel locomotive line during the War. After World War II, they were too far behind EMD and Alco, so even after merging with Lima-Hamilton in 1950, they were out of business by 1956. The boiler pictured in a few of the images was for a 2-8-2 steam locomotive used by the Canadian Transcontinental Railway after the war.

One photo of a group of children has a caption that reads, "the big stomach on this kid is caused by starvation. They can be seen by the millions." One uncaptioned photo shows two Indian soldiers standing with a dead body between them covered in a Union Jack flag. Many of the pictures were sent home to his wife "Anna" in Connecticut with captions directed towards her such as, "This doesn't look like a stump of a tree but it is just that. I'm thinking of you in this picture." There are numerous pictures of Indian landmarks such as the Taj Mahal as well as photos of fisherman on the Ganges in Calcutta, hot springs, and one entitled an "action picture of softball game in organized softball league." The 24 commercially produced cards have images of India printed with captions as well as a stapled leaflet A Pocket Guide to India and India Through the Camera's Eye. Included among the total of 319 vernacular photos are 78 pictures of his young daughter and their friends back home that his wife sent to him to boost his morale and let him know the goings on on the home front. An interesting insight into Americans serving in India during the War. .

s.l.|(Paris): S.n. (Journal des débats), 1944. Fine. S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. - Autograph manuscript of the author of 2 and a half pages in-8 published in the issue dated 17 February 1944 of the Journal of Debates. Complete manuscript writing very dense, with many erasures, corrections and additions. Literary review published on the occasion of the publication of Flammarion "Linguistic Geography" Albert Dauzat. Full typescript is attached. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Buenos Aires, Emece Editores, 1944.. 17.7cm x 11.4cm, 199 pages. Original Hardcover in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Inscribed to Jose Rodriguez Feo by Angel Gaztelu. With Jose Rodriguez Feo's nbame on the endpaper.. Jose Rodriguez Feo (1920-1993). Man-Eaters of Kumaon

Bombay: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, Indian Branch, 1944. With an Introduction by Sir Maurice Hallett …and a Preface by Lord Linlithgow. Octavo. Original sand cloth, lettered in brown on the spine. With the dust-jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 3 other plates, maps to the endpapers. Remarkably well-preserved copy, the cloth, typically of Indian publications, a little tired looking, light toning to the text-block, and just a scatter of foxing to the fore-edge, the unclipped jacket somewhat browned, and becoming brittle, the folds to both flaps separating and professionally reinforced verso with japanese tissue, some splitting and minor chipping at the edges, a little loss at the head and tail of the spine, and some surface flaking at the spine edges, but pictorially and textually largely complete, certainly a very good copy. True first edition of Corbett's first book, printed and published in Bombay, and extremely uncommon thus. "Perhaps the most famous tiger hunting book in print, this work went through numerous editions in several languages, and continues to be popular today. Corbett describes his hunts after the Champwat man-eater, the Chowgargh tigers, the Powalgargh tiger, and other adventures" (Czech). Corbett is largely misremebered as an exemplar of the "white hunter", but is revered in India as the father of conservation; "Tall, slim, and blue-eyed, Corbett was a handsome, scrupulously honest, and modest man, kind and generous, and beloved and admired by all who knew him, no matter what their rank. He was awarded the volunteer decoration, the kaisar-i-Hind gold medal, the OBE, and the CIE, and was granted the freedom of the forests in India, a privilege given only once previously to a European. In 1957 the Indian government renamed the Hailey National Park, the famous tiger sanctuary in Garhwal, the Corbett National Park 'in memory of one who had dedicated his life to the service of the simple hill folks of Kumaon' … He is today considered one of the earliest conservationists and the father of the movement to save the tiger from extinction" (ODNB). Contemporary ownership inscription of Thomas Patrick Healy, Lt., 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, who served 1944-5, demobbed around 1947 as a major. The regiment was raised in 1815 as the Kumaon Battalion.
