        The Razor's Edge

Heinemman - USA printing 1944 - Printed for Heinemann in the USA. Hence a rare 1st edition US printing. This is not the same printing as the UK Heinemann edition. Pages are yellowed and boards a little grubby and bumped. Appears to be signed by the Author on the title page, but signature looks suspiciously similar to others I have seen hence assumed facsimile. But I may be mistaken! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Un roman de Jarry. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit signé complets

Autograph manuscript of the author of 2 and a half pages in-8 published in the issue dated 13 April 1944 of the Journal of Debates. Complete manuscript writing very dense, with many erasures, corrections and additions. Literary review published on the occasion of the posthumous publication of The Strap Alfred Jarry. Complete typescript of the article by the author is attached. Between April 1941 and August 1944, Maurice Blanchot published in the "Chronicle of the intellectual life" of the Journal of Debates 173 articles on recently published books. In a half-page newspaper (about seven pages in-8), the young author of "Thomas the Obscure" his first steps in the field of literary criticism and inaugurates a theoretical work that develop later Many in these essays, "The Share of fire" to "The Infinite Conversation" and "The Writing disaster." From the very first articles, Blanchot demonstrates a sharp analysis far beyond the current literature that motivates writing. Oscillating between classical and modern writers of the first order and minor novelists, he puts in his columns, the foundations of critical thinking which will mark the second half of the twentieth. Transformed by writing and by war, Blanchot breaks, over a thought exerted "on behalf of the other," with violent maurassiennes certainties of his youth. Not without paradox, then it transforms literary criticism philosophical act of intellectual resistance to barbarism at the heart of an "openly marechalist" newspaper: "Burning a book, write, are the two acts between culture which registered its oscillations opposites "(The Book, In Journal of Debates, January 20, 1943). In 2007, Cahiers de la NRF together under the direction of Christophe Bident all literary chronic unpublished volumes with critical analysis of the relevant work of Blanchot "novels, poems, essays give rise to a singular reflection, always safer his own rhetoric, delivered more to echo the impossible or the lure of extinction. (...) Not without contradictions or step aside, and the certainty of a feverish work begins (... ) these articles reveal the genealogy of a critic who has transformed during the chronicle necessity of thought. " (C. Bident). The autograph manuscripts of Maurice Blanchot are of great rarity. S.n. (Journal des débats) s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944) 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4 2 1/2 pages in-8

Bataille Secrète en France. 167 dessins de l'auteur [TOGETHER WITH] Original pencil and ink cover maquette and one additional pencil and ink illustration, the latter signed

New York: Brentano's, [1944]. First Edition. Extensively illustrated contemporary account of the German occupation in France and the French Resistance. Girard, a French painter and poster artist, was the founding member of the Resistance organization known as the CARTE network, which he ran from Antibes, a free zone in France. In 1942 CARTE drew the attention of the British Special Operations Executive, which provided the organization with arms, radio operators, and funds. After traveling to Britain under SOE orders in 1943, Girard was forbidden from returning to France during which time his wife was arrested and incarcerated in the Ravensbruck concentration camp until the end of the war. As a result, Girard broke with the SOE and left in self-imposed exile for the United States where he voiced his opposition to the British and the Gaullists. TOGETHER WITH: Original pencil and ink maquette drawing of a fallen soldier (20x13.5cm.) nearly identical to the cover illustration. Additional pencil sketch on verso with variation of the fallen soldier and cover text. Slight rust-staining from previously removed paper clip, else Very Good. TOGETHER WITH: Original pencil and ink illustration (28x21.5cm.), signed. This illustration does not appear in the published work, though variations of the guards do make appearances throughout. Tears at hole punches not affecting text, some minor staining along top edge, else Very Good. Octavo (20cm.); original cream pictorial wrappers printed in red and black depicting a signed illustration by Girard of a fallen soldier; 292pp.; illus. by the author throughout, including many full-paged.         An American Dilemma.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, , 1944. The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Board edges faintly rubbed, contents mildly toned; an excellent, bright copy in the unclipped, toned jacket with some shallow chips and nicks to extremities. First edition, first printing, one-volume issue. Myrdal shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with Friedrich Hayek in 1974, for "pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena." However, the present study of race relations in America is possibly his best-known and most influential work. Commissioned by the Carnegie Institute, the project drew on sociological, economic, anthropological and legal data, to enquire into the "American Dilemma," the sharp contrast between high ideals and the failure to deliver basic human rights in the 80 years since the Civil War. Myrdal was also a signatory of UNESCO's 1950 statement The Race Question.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Lillibullero or The Golden Road contains the author?'s reminiscences of the colorful Tich Miles in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya in the first half of the twentieth century. Though certainly not common (the book can be fairly readily found in first and later editions) we have not previously encountered a copy thus ?- the numbered and limited issue of the first edition. In 1930, Dutton transferred to Northern Rhodesia where he held the posts of principal assistant chief secretary (1930), chairman of the Northern Rhodesian Finance Commission (1932), chairman of the Town Planning Board (1935), and administrative secretary (1938). He was also deputy to the governor for various periods between 1932 and 1937. Dutton was appointed to the post of colonial secretary in Bermuda in 1938. He left this post in 1942 and transferred to Zanzibar where he was chief secretary (1942-1952), chairman of the Town Planning Board (1943-1952), and chairman of the Central Development Authority (1946-1952). During 1948 he was also a delegate at the First African Conference in London. He was awarded the OBE (1930), CBE (1938), CMG (1946), and was appointed Commander of the Crown of Belgium, and Commander of the Order of Brilliant Star (2nd class) of Zanzibar (1947). Miles arrived in Kenya in 1909 at the age of nineteen, where he made a name for himself as a soldier, entrepreneur, administrator, and raconteur, dying in 1934 at the age of 45. The book is in fine condition. The half-morocco binding is exceptional, with no wear, soiling, or fading.         A Paris sous la botte des Nazis

1944 - EPARVIER, Jean. A Paris sous la botte des Nazis. [Paris Under the Boot of the Nazis]. Paris: Raymond Schall, (1944). Quarto, original photographic paper-covered boards. $2800.First trade edition, published only three months after the Liberation of Paris, with over 225 black-and-white photogravures, many secretly documenting the Nazi-occupation of Paris from June 1940 to August 1944, this unique copy with a laid-in typed letter dated “22 March 1945” and written regarding this copy’s distinctive tipped-in English translations of the French text, notifying the recipient that “your book” is being hand carried from France to Washington, D.C. by Colonel Knowles, then serving with the Under Secretary of War.In this extraordinary photobook published only three months after the Liberation of Paris, the city’s four-year occupation by German forces is recorded in over 225 black-and-white photographs attributed to leading photographers such as Roger Schall, Robert Doisneau, Pierre Vals, Maurice Jarnoux, Pierre Jahan, and the Seeberger brothers. The book’s striking images show Nazis marching through the Arc de Triomphe in June 1940, streets littered with smashed barricades, sightseeing German officers, underground prisons with the handprints of tortured prisoners dug into walls, and a series documenting an execution by firing squad. The book closes with the triumphant return of Général de Gaulle through the crowded streets of Paris. Published by Raymond Schall, whose brother Roger Schall, one of the leading photographers of the day, provided the cover image and many uncredited photographs within. When Nazi forces required all photojournalists to register their work, Schall complied but withheld many negatives until their first printing here in book form. In 1962 the editor of Paris Match praised Schall and those like him “who kept alive the spark of journalism that would never die.” Featuring facsimile of de Gaulle’s announcement declaring the Liberation of Paris. Introduction by Jean Eparvier. Text in French. Published simultaneously with a limited edition of 1525. Without scarce original printed book band. Censor stamp. This copy with numerous tipped-in English translations of the French text, along with a laid-in typed letter dated “22 March 1945,” notifying the letter’s recipient that this copy has been carried from “this side” to Washington D.C. by a Colonel Knowles (then serving with Under Secretary of War Julius Amberg). The letter writer, signed “Lou,” apologizes for sending the book along without a translation of the Introduction-but “I let the book get out of print before I tried to buy one for myself.”Images fresh and clean, tiny stapler marks to upper edge of printed front free endpaper, light edge-wear, faint soiling to bright photographic boards. Near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Teletype covering the Normandy landings on D-Day

AP, 5-6 June 1944 - More than 130 feet of teletype paper in total, comprising 6 strips, each 8 ½ inches wide, in sections of varying length. Folded down into flat sections 18 inches in length. Minor wear, occasional short tears, faint red ink stain along one edge, last section with full horizontal tear across the text. First announcement of the D-Day landings, perhaps the most important event of the 20th century. This file of teletypes begins on the evening of June 5, 1944, with the recent Allied liberation of Rome. Early on June 6th, breaking news comes across the wire: “The German news agency Transocean says that the Allied invasion has begun.” The reports continue with the first Allied news of the invasion, bulletin 95PA: “Today is D-Day. Allied Armies have landed on the coast of France in the mightiest military invasion ever undertaken. Tough American parachute troops, hardened in the Italian campaign, were the first to land behind Hitler’s Atlantic wall.” The final report of the day is a summary provided by President Roosevelt: “Tremendous forces of Allied tanks and infantry landed this morning along the Normandy coast of France and have battered several miles inland.” “It was unknowable then, but so much of the progress that would define the 20th century, on both sides of the Atlantic, came down to the battle for a slice of beach only 6 miles long and 2 miles wide” (Barack Obama). The long-planned D-Day invasion was shrouded in secrecy. The D in “D-Day” stood simply for “day,” as the actual date of the amphibious landing was not fixed until immediately preceding the operation. It was of utmost importance that the Allies restrict information on the invasion on both sides of the Atlantic. Thus contemporary written information predating the invasion is essentially unobtainable. In light of the secrecy around invasion plans, a central aspect of the intelligence operation for the invasion was the feeding of false information to the German military. The Allied program of disinformation, codenamed Operation Bodyguard, aimed to convince Hitler that the invasion would take place somewhere other than Normandy, primarily Pas de Calais in northern France, Southern France, the Balkans, or Norway. The plan was so effective that Hitler delayed repositioning the troops he had placed in Pas de Calais for seven weeks after the Normandy landing, greatly weakening the initial response of the German military. The invasion of Normandy, codenamed Operation Overlord, began with an invasion of the French coastline on June 6th, 1944. The invasion force consisted of 3 million men (160,000 of whom landed on D-day), 13,000 aircraft, 1,200 warships, 2,700 merchant ships, and 2,500 amphibious landing craft. The Allies created new technology for the landing, including a new type of tank and even two artificial ports. It remains the largest seaborne invasion in history. The effect on public morale in the United States and Britain was enormous. The landing of troops on the ground gave Britain renewed vigor in a war that had badly sapped public spirits. The American the public had been long gearing up for the invasion, and its realization galvanized public support. This fragile strip of paper is the earliest announcement of the greatest event of the 20th century: the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe and the defeat of Nazi Germany.

        Concept Design for Cadillac

1944. Pencil and watercolor on drafting paper. Lower right corner of page has been skilfully replaced. Does not affect images. Handsome proposed design for a post-war Cadillac The license plate reads "GM 1944" raising interesting questions, since, as everyone knows, virtually no new cars were produced during the high armament production years of World War II, and certainly not pretty new dark pink ones. The car portrayed here does however anticipate very much the look of early fifties' vehicles, if not necessarily Cadillacs. And bright colors certainly would catch on in a way they had not before the war. Note the 1930's Cadillac emblem on the front grille, which was changed when auto production actually re-commenced.

Tra i collaboratori politici: Pajetta, Pavolini, Natta, Chiaromonte, Coppola, Ferrara, Reichlin, Ledda, Pietro Ingrao, Armando Cossutta, Luciano Lama, Giorgio Amendola, Franco Calamandrei, Luigi Longo, Giorgio Napolitano. ITA

        FOREVER AMBER

1944. WINSOR, Kathleen. FOREVER AMBER. NY: The Macmillan Company, 1944. 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket; 972 pages. First Edition, first printing (so stated). Adapted into a successful 1948 movie, the 972-page novel was edited down to one-fifth of the manuscript Winsor originally presented to the publisher. Condemned for blatant sexual references, 14 states banned the book as pornography. Despite its ban, "Forever Amber" was the best-selling U.S. novel of the 1940s, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release and eventually selling more than three million. Signed by Winsor on verso of the front endpaper. I have also noted two variant dust jackets but I have little information to offer about them. This dust jacket, which is uncommonly fragile, is entirely printed in blue- both text & the photograph on the rear cover. It is my experience that this is the more uncommon dust jacket but, if it is the earliest one, I do not know. Very Good (little wear covers; contents clean & tight); some wear & chipping (one-inch chip base of spine; $3.00 price is present but lower corner of front flap is clipped; few interior clear-tape repairs) d/j. $750.00.

The Lost Weekend (First Edition, signed in the year of publication)

New York: Farrar and Rinehart, 1944. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in the year of publication to actress Kay Campbell: "For Kay Campbell / who is almost my favorite actress - and so damned nice (plus attractive) besides / Love and kisses from / Charlie Jackson / March 2nd, '44." Campbell is best known for her television roles in "Guiding Light" (1957-1964, as Helene Benedict) and "All My Children" (c. 1981-1983, as Kate Marin); the latter she held until her death in 1983. She began acting in radio serials in the mid 1940s, notably as Evey Perkins on the serial, "Ma Perkins" (1945-1960). Since Campbell had yet to hit the big screen, Jackson likely referred to her acting owing to what he heard on the radio. An attractive copy of the author's best-known title, basis for the 1945 drama directed by Billy Wilder and starring Ray Milland. Jackson's book was an overnight success, and the author went on to become an iconic spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous, being one of the first to expand the scope of AA to discussion of drug use (something very common today). Early inscriptions by him are uncommon, particularly on this title. Very Good plus in a Very Good plus jacket. Spine ends lightly bumped, spine moderately faded, with slight discoloration at the top edge of the front board. Jacket lightly rubbed overall, with brief chipping at the extremities, a few tiny closed tears, and slight fading at the lower spine text.

Original Schutz-Pass: Two signed documents. Budapest, 26 September 1944

      - 1. An original Schutz-Pass (protective passport,), issued for Ernst J. Rappaport, born 11 September 1932, with his photo attached. The passport was designed by Wallenberg, and printed in blue and yellow (the Swedish national colors), with text in German and Hungarian, stating that the named person will travel for repatriation to Sweden and until departure is under the protection of the Swedish embassy. With the stamped seal of the Swedish Embassy in Budapest. Press numbered at the top "90/96". Signed by Wallenberg as often with a simple pen-mark, counter-signed by the Swedish ambassador to Hungary, Carl Ivan Danielsson, who was also recognized by Israel with the decoration "Righteous among the Nations" for his work in organizing the Swedish legation's rescue mission. 2. A typed and printed document, on letterhead of the Royal Swedish Embassy in Budapest, numbered "R. 03414," "Sp.: 9096," and "Liste :316," and bearing their stamped seal, signed in full by Wallenberg. In Hungarian, it reads: "To the 'National Central Authority for Supervising Foreigner', Budapest: We have the honour to inform you that the Swedish Royal Embassy in Budapest issued a protecting-passport [Schutzpass, in Hungarian: védöútlevet] to Mr. Erno J. Rappaport, by this he is identified as a Swedish subject. The Embassy kindly requests to give to the named exemption from [wearing] the yellow badge [star]. The Embassy confirms that the bilateral agreements with Sweden regarding the relevant edict is applied. Budapest, September 25, 1944. / Yours sincerely, / [signed] Raoul Wallenberg / acting for the Swedish Royal Ambassador. The Swedish Royal Secretary of the Embassy." These papers, always kept together (as evidenced by folds and paper clip marks,) saved the life of a 12 year-old Jewish boy in Budapest. "Raoul Wallenberg was the most inventive, daring, and successful rescuer of Jews from the Nazis during the period of the Final Solution," The Holocaust Encyclopedia, ed. Laqueur. From July 1944, when the 32 year-old business man-turned diplomat, from a wealthy Swedish family, arrived in Budapest, until his arrest by the Soviet Army on 17 January 1945, he issued documents which saved thousands from deportation and death. In March 1944 Hungary was occupied by German troops, and a Nazi-appointed government took power. Under the direction of Adolf Eichmann, a special unit was set up to annihilate the remaining Hungarian Jews. In May, deportations to Auschwitz began, at the rare of 12,000 per day. The Jews of Budapest were by new laws deprived of their civil rights and property, and forced to wear yellow stars. Later they were concentrated into so-called Yellow Star Houses and not allowed outside, a prelude to the ghetto and deportation. In July, after protests from the king of Sweden, the Red Cross, and the U.S. secretary of state, the deportations were stopped. During this time, the Swedish legation issued provisional passports to persons with family or business connections in Sweden, however the number permitted was small, and they then began to issue certificates declaring that application for Swedish citizenship had been made. By July some 700 passports and certificates had been issued.Ambassador Danielsson requested additional support for the legation's work, at the same time that President Roosevelt had sent Iver Olsen to Stockholm as an official representative of the American War Refugee Board, to search for a Swede willing and able to go to Budapest to organize a rescue program for the Jews. Raoul Wallenberg was selected for the assignment and arrived in Budapest on July 9. Wallenberg wanted to give protective documents to every Hungarian Jew who applied. He began issuing a new document of his own design, known as a Schutz-Pass, it was numbered. printed in yellow and blue, and bore three crowns of Sweden, and official seals and and signatures. In August 1944 Wallenberg met with Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy and won permission to issue 5000 of these passpo [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Illustrirte Zeitung Leipzig Nr.5037 vom Mai 1944, mitsamt dem Gemäldezyklus \"Die 4 Tageszeiten\" von Willy Kriegel: 4 Originale, in kleinerer Fassung 1943 ff

Leipzig, J.J.Weber Verlag, 1944.
