Oswiecim. Camp of Death. (Underground Report.) Foreword by Florance J. Harriman. [At head of title:] Underground Poland Speaks

"Poland Fighters" Polish Labor Group (1944), New York - First English edition, second printing. With two facsimile illustrations. In publisher's illustrated wrappers, designed by Teresa Zarnower. 48 p. One of the earliest published eyewitness accounts of Auschwitz concentration camp. The striking cover image of crossing barbed-wire fences, with the handwritten text of the title is by Teresa Zarnower. Originally published clandestine in Poland in 1942 under the title "Obóz ?mierci". With two full page illustrations, one is the facsimile of the original, Polish edition's title-page the other is the map of the concentration camps throughout Poland. Written by Natalia Zarembina (1895-1973) the Polish journalist who was the wife of Zygmunt Zaremba the Polish socialist activist, founder of the underground political party in the occupied Poland "Polska Partia Socjalistyczna - Wolno??, Równo??, Niepodleg?o??" (Polish Socialist Party - Freedom, Equality, Independence), who published "Obóz ?mierci". The book based on the testimonies of three escapees from Auschwitz: Eryk Lipi?ski (1908-1991) the Polish graphic artist, resistant, who was involved in production of false documents, deported in August 1940; Henryk ?wi?tkowski (1896-1970) the Polish lawyer, who was also deported in August 1940; and Edward Bugajski (1903-1956) the Polish Socialist activist, who participated in the defense of Warsaw in 1939 and later the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz on May 29, 1941. The book reports about the life in Auschwitz until early 1942, that is the reason why the mass extermination of the Jews is not mentioned, and it is focusing mostly on the suffering of the imprisoned Polish people. The designer of the cover, Teresa Zarnower (or ?arnowerówna; 1895-1950), was a Polish avant-garde artist, painter, sculptor, scenographer and architect. ?arnower studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, exhibited in 1923 in Wilno (Vilnius) at the "New Art Exhibition", the first constructivist manifestation in Poland, and in Berlin in the gallery "Der Sturm". ?arnower together with Mieczys?aw Szczuka was the founder of the Warsaw avant-garde artist's group "Blok" and co-editor of the associated art magazine "Blok", and also "D?wignia". She left Poland in 1937 and settled down in New York. In publisher's illustrated wrappers, designed by Teresa Zarnower First English edition, second printing. With two facsimile illustrations.         Lillibullero or The Golden Road

Printed Privately, Zanzibar 1944 - Lillibullero or The Golden Road contains the author’s reminiscences of the colorful Tich Miles in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya in the first half of the twentieth century. Though certainly not common (the book can be fairly readily found in first and later editions) we have not previously encountered a copy thus – the numbered and limited issue of the first edition. This copy is hand numbered on the copyright page "No. 14" of 100 copies privately printed in Zanzibar in 1944, and is finely bound in half green morocco over green cloth boards with raised spine bands, gilt print and rules, head and foot bands, gilt top edge, and marbled endpapers. The author, Eric Aldhelm Torlogh Dutton (1895-1973) was a British veteran, civil servant, and writer. Dutton was educated at Oxford and served during the First World War in Gallipoli. He passed the Indian Civil Service examination in 1920 and in the same year was appointed as private secretary to Sir Robert Coryndon, Governor of Uganda and subsequently of Kenya. Dutton worked with Coryndon until 1925 at which point he became private secretary to Lieutenant Colonel Sir Edward Grigg, Governor of Kenya (1925-1930). In 1930, Dutton transferred to Northern Rhodesia where he held the posts of principal assistant chief secretary (1930), chairman of the Northern Rhodesian Finance Commission (1932), chairman of the Town Planning Board (1935), and administrative secretary (1938). He was also deputy to the governor for various periods between 1932 and 1937. Dutton was appointed to the post of colonial secretary in Bermuda in 1938. He left this post in 1942 and transferred to Zanzibar where he was chief secretary (1942-1952), chairman of the Town Planning Board (1943-1952), and chairman of the Central Development Authority (1946-1952). During 1948 he was also a delegate at the First African Conference in London. He was awarded the OBE (1930), CBE (1938), CMG (1946), and was appointed Commander of the Crown of Belgium, and Commander of the Order of Brilliant Star (2nd class) of Zanzibar (1947). (Biographical information from The Bodleian Library) Born in England, Arthur "Tich" Miles arrived in Kenya in 1909 at the age of nineteen, where he made a name for himself as a soldier, entrepreneur, administrator, and raconteur, dying in 1934 at the age of 45. The book is in fine condition. The half-morocco binding is exceptional, with no wear, soiling, or fading. The contents remain bright and clean, with no previous ownership marks and only a trace of intermittent spotting, substantially confined to prelims and page edges. The hand-numbered, limited, privately printed issue of the first edition. [Attributes: First Edition]

L'air et les songes. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets

S.n. (Journal des débats) 1944 - - S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. My Early Life, a presentation copy "souvenir" inscribed by Churchill and presented to the custodian of his secret Cabinet War Rooms on Churchill's last day as wartime prime minister

London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1944. 1944. Hardcover. This is ChurchillÂ’s autobiography of his early life, a noteworthy association copy inscribed by Churchill and presented on the final day of his wartime premiership to the man who helped create and served as custodian of the Cabinet War Rooms. The inscription, five lines inked in black on the front free endpaper, reads: “To | G. Rance | from | Winston S. Churchill | 1945”. Affixed to the verso of the following blank end sheet is a typed presentation message on “10 Downing Street, Whitehall” stationery. Four typed lines read: “With Mr. ChurchillÂ’s Compliments. | A Souvenir of 10, Downing Street | 1940-1945 | 26th July, 1945”. Below the date, the words “Mr. Rance” are inked in black. To create a secret location safe from air raids, a sprawling maze of subterranean offices below Whitehall was transformed into the Cabinet War Rooms and became the center of BritainÂ’s war effort. ChurchillÂ’s War Cabinet met here 115 times. Churchill delivered four of his wartime addresses here and “from a room no larger than a lavatory heldÂ… conversations with President Roosevelt” using a phone installed by the U.S. Signal Corps. “The Cabinet War Rooms were in use 24 hours a day until 16 August 1945, when the lights were turned off in the Map Room for the first time in six years.” To the 300 people who worked here during the Second World War, it was “The Hole” or simply “down there” but to Churchill it was “This Secret Place.” More than any other individual, George Rance helped create and keep the secret. Rance was a civil servant filling pay sheets of government ministry charwomen when he was called upon to help set up the Cabinet War Rooms. Rance fitted the bunker with furniture, equipment, and supplies, attaching unauthorized applications to legitimate ministry orders and having the surplus material delivered to “c/o Mr. Rance” and then smuggled into the War Rooms. Rance ran the bunker throughout the war, eventually receiving an MBE. “If it was the personality of Churchill that gave This Secret Place its character, it was the skill of George Rance that kept things running smoothlyÂ… Both were old soldiers. Both were the same ageÂ… Of course one was the Prime Minister and the other the custodian, but it was more a feeling of the colonel of the Regiment and the Regimental Sergeant-Major.” In 1965, at the age of 91, Rance sat in a back pew of St. PaulÂ’s Cathedral during ChurchillÂ’s state funeral. “He remembered then the few gruff words that had passed between the ex Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the ex-Sergeant of the Rifle Brigade when the war was over. ‘I suppose, Rance,Â’ Churchill had said ‘you think I donÂ’t know all you have done. Well, I do. Thank you. Thank you very much.” Clearly, Churchill did regard Rance. On July 26, 1945, ChurchillÂ’s Conservatives lost the General Election and Churchill resigned, yielding the premiership to Clement Attlee. That same day, this inscribed copy was presented to George Rance. This is the fourth and final 1944 wartime reprint of Churchill's extremely popular autobiography, covering the years from his birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament. During the war, Macmillan issued these desirable reprints (from first edition plates) in dark blue cloth wrapped in attractive tan dust jackets. This copy is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding remains square, tight, clean, and unfaded, with bright spine gilt and only trivial wear to extremities. The contents show just a hint of spotting to the endpapers and mild age-toning. Laid in is what appears to be an old copy of RanceÂ’s invitation to ChurchillÂ’s state funeral. The dust jacket is unclipped with minor wear to spine ends and corners, modest spine toning, and a .5 inch stain to the upper front face, just above “MY” in the title. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A91.6.d, Woods/ICS A37(d.4), Langworth p.139

Stephen Hero: A Part of the First Draft of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

[New York]: New Directions, (1944). Octavo, original black cloth lettered in gilt over green paper boards, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket (supplied). Frontispiece portrait by Augustus John, title page printed in black and green, illustrated with black-and white plates throughout text. Signature of Lionel Trilling to front free endpaper. Boards toned, edges rubbed, edgewear to jacket with light chipping to spine ends. First American edition, one of 3000 copies, of the fragmentary first draft of James Joyce's bildingsroman, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, first published in 1916. More autobiography than novel, Stephen Hero introduces the character of Stephen Dedalus, a restless young Irishman with literary aspirations: "Stephen came seldom to lectures, prepared nothing and absented himself from term examinations and not merely was no remark passed on these extravagances but it was supposed probable that he represented really the artistic type and that he was, after the fashion of that little known tribe, educating himself." The character of Stephen Dedalus would reappear in Joyce's Ulysses, playing the part of Telemachus. This copy bears the ownership signature of influential American critic Lionel Trilling, a defender of Joyce even at his most difficult: "never in our time will a young man focus this much power of love and hate into so sustained a rage of effectual intention as Joyce was capable of, so ferocious an ambition" ("James Joyce in His Letters"). A near-fine copy, with an excellent modernist association.

One after the other the German Tigers are knocked out and set ablaze." The following image show the first Allied Troops entering the city. At 4:05 the caption notes "The fight has been over for a few minutes...", and show a Sherman tank and a Red Cross truck with a few citizens coming out. The next images shows the rue Castiglione with abandoned German vehicles and awash in citizens, Leclerc's Moroccan troops entering the city on a troop carrier, one of Leclerc's Shermans with a priest on a bicycle; a group of "300 German prisoners caught in the Tuileries...", crowds beginning to gather in La Place de la Concorde Suisse, and other scenes from the area.Housed in an unmarked envelope, the photographer is unidentified. A wonderfully immediate sense view of the liberation of Paris. .

[Illustrated Manuscript]: Le Meravigliose Avventure Dei Brim. Two volumes. [The Wonderful Adventures of "The Brim"]

[Levada, Italy]. (1944-1946). First. Two volumes. Oblong folios. Measuring 16.5" x 11.5". Quarter cloth and color-patterned paper over boards, gilt-stamped cloth label on each of the front covers, cord ties. A bit of rubbing to the extremities, near fine. A magnificent Second World War manuscript written by an Italian partisan and illustrated with 66 watercolor paintings. The two-volume set, each dated 1944 on the cover, contains thick-paper leaves with 68 typed sheets laid down on the versos and 66 paintings laid down on the facing rectos. The author identifies himself only as "Zio Vettor" (Uncle Vettor) in a two-page Signed preamble to the work dated March, 1946 that is addressed to "Caro piccolo Vettor" (My dear little Vettor). The paintings that follow are clearly the work of an accomplished artist, whom we presume to be the same person, but cannot say for sure. A few of the illustrations are signed in the corner "Anna V. Croce," suggesting either a collaborative effort or an attempt to disguise the gender of the books' creator. The 1946 preamble makes it clear that the narrative and paintings date from the author's experience as a partisan during the war: "when the Italian countryside was a battlefield and devastated by civil war," and that he wishes his little Vettor to know something of the "calamitous episodes of that time ... in which you will encounter great and vile persons, patriots and profiteers, innocent martyrs and the guilty who act with impunity ... in short, you will see all the tragic consequences of the fratricidal civil war." The paintings follow this narrative with images of raids by the fascist government, people held at gunpoint in their homes, arrests and interrogations by government forces, night raids by masked rebels burning trains, a boat being strafed by an airplane, and roof-top chase and execution of a spy.The narrator notes that he relates these episodes by way of allegory which explains the first part of the title: Le Meravigliose Avventure (Wonderful Adventures). Of the Brim he says "you, upon reading the title, will wonder "Who were these Brim? -- and explains that this was a pseudonym chosen by us, the partisans of the area ... and that the word is derived from the letters of two words: "rebels" (later called partisans) and "bandits" of which, in the great chaos of that time in Italy, there were many who had infiltrated our ranks. Our woeful rendering of Vettor's Italian into English does an injustice to this remarkable illustrated manuscript. A magnificent narrative of life in Italy during the War. .

Zsidók élelmiszerellátásának szabályozása alól mentesül? személyek fogalmi meghatározása. 1944. november 9. 127.799/1944.-VIII. ü.-o. szám. [The Conceptual Definition of Those Individuals Who Exempted Under the Regulation of the Food Stuff Supply of the Jews. November 9, 1944. No. 127.799/1944.-VIII. ü.-o.]

Dr. Rosta János tanácsnok (Budapest székesf?város házinyomdája) (1944), Budapest - Original printed poster. With the coat of arms of Budapest. Issued by the Mayor of Capital City of Budapest as Government Commissioner for Public Services. 48 × 63 cm. The decree regarding the "Regulation of the Food Stuff Supply of the Jews" was enacted May 1, 1944. It rules about the ration for the Jews in different commodities (300 gram sugar per month; no fat instead 300 gram sunflower oil per month; 100 gram beef or horse meet per week, maximum of 0.7 liter milk for pregnant mothers and children under the age of three) and ceases their food coupon supply. This decree circumstantially defines who can get exemption under the above restrictions. Ákos Farkas was the mayor during the most difficult time for the Jewry of Budapest. He decreed numerous anti-semitic edicts and he was very active in the ghettoization of the Jews in Budapest that started in November 1944. As the Red Army approached Budapest, Farkas fled to Germany in late December, 1944. He was captured by the US troops and as war criminal extradited to Hungary in 1946. He was sentence 10 years imprisonment, he died in the prison in 1955. Tanned due to acidic paper. Folded twice. Small tears to edges. In fine condition. Original printed poster. With the coat of arms of Budapest. Issued by the Mayor of Capital City of Budapest as Government Commissioner for Public Services. [Attributes: First Edition]

(p. 25). Le deuxième volume parut en 1945 (avec le volume 1 avec la ?truffe retouchée?)Cornerstone of all comics collections. First edition of the first original volume of 1944, in-4° format, with colour ill. Exquisite parody on the Second World War and Hitler, transposed into the animal kingdom. Hitler, the beast from the title, is represented as the big bad wolf in uniform, his accomplices are the decorated pig (Göring) and the talkative weasel (Goebbels). The Germans are drawn as wolves, the French as rabbits and squirrels, the British as bulldogs, the Americans as buffalos, etc. Written and drawn in secret during the German occupation in France, it was released at the end of the war and has since become a classic of the French comic. Walt Disney disliked the illustrated big bad wolf on the cover as it was too similar to his own bad wolf and Calvo had to change its snout. So on the second edition, published with an second volume in 1945 cover of the wolfs snout looks slightly different (cut in two). This is also the first time that the Holocaust is depicted or at least hinted at in a comic as early as 1944. The authors couldn?t yet be aware of the full reality of the Shoah, but already showed mass deportation and mention Hitler?s plans of annihilation of the ?rebel animal races?         Original Cartoon Illustration, "The End of the Trail - Ridden to a Finish - The Allied Academy Award"

N.d. (ca 1944). Russell became lead cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times in 1934 and held that position for nearly 30 years, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1946. This cartoon, parodying the iconic James Earle Fraser sculpture "End of the Trail," pictures a defeated Hitler riding an exhausted Germany to its death. Though undated, it clearly dates from the final year of WW2. The drawing's Native American reference must have caught the eye of noted Western historian and cowboy poet E.A. [Earl Alonzo] Brininstool, to whom Russell has inscribed the piece. The two were probably acquainted through the University Club of Los Angeles, of which they were both members. Original drawing in black ink on artist board, sheet size 54cm x 41cm (ca 21" x 16") with ca. 1" margins. Signed in ink, lower right. Also inscribed: "To E.A. Brininstool with my best regards, Bruce Russell" in bottom margin. Compositor's instructions in pencil; a few areas of white ink for touch-up; light wear to paper at edges; image bright and clear; Near Fine.
