F.E. Manning
United States War Department, 1943. Huge fold-out wall-size World War 2 propaganda poster boldly titled "Target Tokyo," with a color lithographed panoptic map of the world centered on Japan. The map was compiled by journalistic cartographer F.E. Manning and published at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., by the Army Orientation Course of the Special Service Division Army Service Forces, a propaganda arm of the United States War Department. The overall size of this dramatic poster is 119.5 x 90 cm [47" x 35½"], including a measuring scale printed along the lower edge, intended to be clipped and used to measure airstrike distances to Tokyo from various locations. On the reverse side there are photos, additional maps, and news from the war fronts, including central Italy, Russia, Norway, Wake Island, the southwest Pacific, and bombing flights from England into the Baltic regions of East Prussia and Poland by the Eighth Air Force. The publication is titled Newsmap and dated October 18, 1943. It covers the week of October 7-14, "214th Week of the War — 96th Week of U.S. Participation." Newsmap posters were distributed to business offices and factories to keep the American public updated with news of the war and to boost morale and encourage support in the efforts towards victory. Condition: This Newsmap poster is in very good, lightly used condition. There are pinholes in the corners, from a previous owner who had evidently hung it on a wall, and there are some tiny chips and scattered closed tears along the edges, neatly mended with archival tape, and a few faint stains in the mar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Miller
1943. "Shadowy Monomania (from Random Notes on D. H. Lawrence)." One holograph and 50 typewritten pages corrected in ink throughout by Henry Miller. Miller first began in 1933 to write a book on D. H. Lawrence but he was never able to complete it to his satisfaction. As his prefatory note indicates, this typescript dates from that period before the publication of Tropic of Cancer. To create this essay (which was published in Sunday After the War) Miller simply lifted pages en bloc from his unfinished book, prefacing it with a holograph page written in 1943, giving it a name and brief introduction, and making his corrections throughout (which include crossing out the original chapter titles: "Lady Chatterly's Lover," "Lawrence, the Man). The final page of the typescript reveals an unfinished paragraph which was obviously continued on a following page, but Miller has crossed it out and written in "Finis" to show that the essay should end at that point though his original notes went on. With about 40 corrections, including the deletion of an entire paragraph at one point and the insertion of two holograph lines at another. Just about fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1943. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. The all-time Hollywood classic, the studio system producing at its best! It would win the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1943, though officially released and copyrighted in 1942; it qualified for the following year's awards as it did not have a Los Angeles screening until Jan. 1943. Here is a climactic scene as Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) are about to leave Casablanca with the letter of transit secured by Rick (Humphrey Bogart). Still is coded "c-77". The original informational attached paper blurb is on the verso. There is a one-inch (2.5 cm.) tear at the mid left border which has been repaired with archival tape on the verso. Minor creasing at the corners, more at the bottom left corner NEAR FINE.

Saint-Exupery, Antoine de; Translated by Katherine Woods
Reynal and Hitchcock, New York, 1943. First edition, first printing with the proper address on front jacket flap and printing statement on last page of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's masterpiece, which precedes the first edition in French. Translated from the French by Katherine Woods. Small quarto, original salmon cloth, illustrated by the author. With the five-line colophon on the last page. Near fine in an excellent dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities with the $2.00 price present and the publisher's address as 386 Fourth Avenue on the front flap. A nice example. The Little Prince has something of Hans Christian Andersen in it, something of Lewis Carroll, and even, it may perhaps be said, a bit of John Bunyan. It is often lyrical sometimes profound However it is classified, The Little Prince has entered children’s literature, in the manner of quite a few other such hard-to-define works in the preceding centuries" (Pierpont Morgan Library). It is one of the most-translated books in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. Translated into 300 languages and dialects (as well as Braille), selling nearly two million copies annually with sales totaling over 140 million copies worldwide, it has become one of the best-selling books ever published. A year after the book’s publication in 1943, Saint-Exupery disappeared over the Mediterranean while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron, making this signed limited very desirable. it is the basis for the 2015 English-language French 3D animated fantasy adventure family drama f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berggol'ts, Ol'ga, Vera Inber, Vsevolod Rozhdestvenskii, Vladimir Lifshits, and others
Leningrad, 1943. [Leningrad Siege Publishing] Published during the darkest days of the Siege of Leningrad (today and historically St. Petersburg) in 1941-1943, these small books of poetry and prose are remarkable documents of a city under blockade. The 900-day Siege of Leningrad by the Nazi forces from September 1941-January 1943 took the lives of nearly a million civilians. Many of the city inhabitants were evacuated prior to the Siege, however, nearly 1.5 million people working in the military, fuel and energy industries, transport as well as industries that produced the necessary products for the remaining population, remained. This included employees of cultural and educational institutions. Theaters, libraries, radio stations and publishing houses continued operation throughout the blockade, tasked with keeping up the morale of the population. Seven publishing houses (and twenty-three libraries) remained open during the siege, which in the two and a half year period published nearly two thousand titles with the total output of three million items (!). The publishers were tasked with printing newspapers such as the local 'Leningrad Pravda', military and political pamphlets, maps, agitational posters and postcards, literature for adults and children, as well as ration cards for food and consumer goods, due on the 27th of every month. One of the seven publishing houses had a special division that made paper on premises. The shortage of paper is evident in the small scale of the books in this collection, which were published primarily by the two literary publishing ho … [Click Below for Full Description]

1943. The famous screen adaptation which starred Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, directed by Sam Wood. Studio mimeograph, self-wrappers, the original two staples are missing, and so the pages are loose, 202 pp. The title page and the final page are a bit fragile, overall VERY GOOD+. This film, when released in 1943, had an epic running time of 170 minutes, but this script's massive length implies an even longer film, which in turn suggests that some of the scenes in this script were either never shot or else were not included in the finalized version. 1943. Set of 8 vintage original 18 x 26" (46 x 67 cm.) fotobusta posters, Italy. Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Cataldi, dir: Pier Paolo Pasolini; PEA.  Pasolini's notorious final film, loosely adapted from the Marquis De Sade's notorious novel THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM. In this film, Pasolini makes a direct link between fascism and various forms of sexual cruelty. This film, for many, is exceedingly hard to take.  "The film focuses on four wealthy, corrupt Italian libertines, during the time of the fascist Republic of Sal√≤ (1943-1945). The libertines kidnap eighteen teenagers and subject them to four months of extreme violence, sadism, and sexual and mental torture. The film explores the themes of political corruption, abuse of power, sadism, perversion, sexuality and fascism. The story is in four segments, inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy: the Anteinferno, the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Shit and the Circle of Blood. The film also contains frequent references to and several discussions of Friedrich Nietzsche's 1887 book On the Genealogy of Morality, Ezra Pound's poem The Cantos, and Marcel Proust's novel sequence In Search of Lost Time." (Wikipedia)  Folded once vertically, in original printed envelope, NEAR FINE or better.

Bad Kissingen, Germany, 1943. Bad Kissingen, Germany. 1943. [Folk Books/Folk Art][World War II][Germany] 12” x 15¾”. String tied, floral patterned cotton over boards. 24 leaves interleaved with tissue, with 39 black and white photographs adhesive mounted rectos only. Photos measure 5” x 7” and most are captioned in German. Album very good plus with light wear, contents fine. This is a carefully and artistically produced album by the men of the 13th Medical Replacement Training Battalion stationed in Bad Kissingen, Germany. It was presented to their Battalion Commander to commemorate the unit's participation in the Wehrmacht Winter Assistance program where they raised money for German charities. The men staged a talent show in the main city theater, sold tickets and then donated the proceeds to the charity. Professionally produced images are accompanied by captions in an artful hand. That same hand also provided captions in what appears to be Sanskrit, as well as several bars of music presumably describing the performance pictured. Men are seen playing accordions, violins and saxophones as well as performing in scenes involving a hospital room. One shows a caricaturist drawing onstage, two show a fire eater and one outstanding shot shows a man lying on a bed of nails, an anvil on his pelvis, with a man standing over him wielding a sledgehammer. There's a trapeze artist, Nazis in drag, and more. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Hughes, Langston
Musette Publishers, New York, 1943. Stapled, beige wraps with light aging and wear. About near fine. This copy is signed by Hughes to fellow writer and supporter of left wing causes, Howard Fast. Fast joined the Communist Party in 1943 and served time in prison for refusing to testify against others before the HUAC. Hughes' own interest in Communism and the nature of this poem make for a strong association between the two writers. This poem was originally read by Paul Muni over the Blue Network on Monday March 15,1943 from 3:45 to 4:00 PM Eastern War Time. Background music was furnished by organ accompaniment and the Golden Gate Quartette.
