Rand, Ayn
Bobbs-Merrill Company, Indianapolis, 1943. First edition, first issue with first edition stated on the copyright page of the author's first major novel, as well as her first best-seller. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panel, marbled endpapers, original red cloth bound in at rear. Boldly signed by Ayn Rand on the title page. In fine condition. Although Rand was a previously published novelist and had a successful Broadway play, she faced difficulty in finding a publisher she thought right for The Fountainhead. She let Macmillian Publishing go when they rejected her demand for better publicity (Branden, 1986), and when her agent criticized the novel, she fired him and handled submissions herself (Burns, 2009). After sifting through eleven more publishers, Rand finally released The Fountainhead with Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943. The reception was instant, and The Fountainhead became a bestseller in two years. The protagonist, Howard Roark, whose character was thought to be inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a young architect fighting against convention. Cited by numerous architects as an inspiration, Ayn Rand said the theme of the book was "individualism versus collectivism, not within politics but within a man's soul." Rand chose architecture as the analogy of her heady themes because of the context of the ascent of modern architecture. It provided an appropriate mode to make relevant her beliefs that the individual is of supreme value, the "fountainhead" of creativity, and that selfishness, properly un … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Copyright Fox Photos Ltd., published by The Daily Telegraph, 1 July 1943. Photograph. This item from The Daily Telegraph archives is both quite unusual and quite striking – a triptych of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill comprised of three wartime photographs taken on 30 June 1943 at the luncheon in his honor following his receipt of the Honorary Freedom of the City of London. The composition, measuring 11.5 x 8.5 inches (29.2 x 21.6 cm), comprises three gelatin silver prints on matte photo paper. The Daily Telegraph Art Department hinged the three images together with paper tape on the verso and hand-applied retouching to Churchill's face and suit. Condition is very good plus. The paper is clean and crisp with only minor softening to the corners. The photographs are arresting; Churchill is in focus with the other figures blurred from motion and a beautiful bokeh to the table setting. The versos of all three photos bear the copyright stamp of “Fox Photos Ltd.” and handwritten printing notations. The top and bottom photos have published stamps from The Daily Telegraph dated 1 JUL 1943; and the bottom photo has a clipping of the caption as it appeared in print reading, "THREE INTIMATE STUDIES of the Prime Minister taken yesterday at the Mansion House during the luncheon held in his honour." This triptych is housed in a removable, archival mylar sleeve within a rigid, crimson cloth folder. This is the only such triptych we have encountered in the many hundreds of original press photos we have handled. It is a striking piece well-suited to framing. Following this are a large number of photos taken after he was sent to Zell Am See, Austria in 1945 as part of the medical group at the end of the war. They were stationed with the 122nd Medical Battalion at Rainbow University as part of the relief effort. He is seen posing by lakes and mountains in a small town and with other soldiers and Army dogs. The final pages of the album are miscellaneous photos of friends who were in different branches of the military as well as family and friends who sent photos while Gene was overseas. [Japanese-American Photographica]: [World War II]
Camp Shelby, Ms, 1943. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph, 9 1/2 x 18 inches. Backed on linen. Several vertical creases, minor fading. Very good. A significant group portrait featuring over 100 Japanese-American members of the 2nd Battalion of the famed 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team during their training before World War II. The soldiers stand proudly, many of them smiling, with a flagman at left holding the unit's guidon. Six commissioned officers, none of them Japanese- American, stand in the middle of the front line. This image was taken just four months after the activation of the 442nd on February 1, 1943. The 442nd Infantry Regiment was composed almost entirely of second- generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei). They trained at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Mississippi, not far from places like Rohwer and Jerome, Arkansas, where Japanese-Americans were interned during World War II. When many of their families were imprisoned in camps within the United States, the 442nd fought with outsized courage and uncommon distinction in Italy, Germany, and southern France, living up to their motto to "Go for broke." Over 800 Japanese-Americans would be killed or declared missing in action during their brief stint in the war, an unusually-high percentage relative to their force numbers. But they would also earn unusually- high combat rewards, including seven Distinguished Unit citations, one of them awarded by President Truman himself, who remarked on July 15, 1946, "You've fought not only the enemy...you fought prejudice and won." Japanese-Amer … [Click Below for Full Description]
