Berlin (Illustrierter Film-Kurier); Kiel (Handbuch für den Hauptfeldwebel der Kriegsmarine): Franke & Co. KG. (Illustrierter Film-Kurier); Kommando der Marineschule Kiel (Handbuch für den Hauptfeldwebel der Kriegsmarine), 1943. First edition. Softcover. g to vg. Collection of three items pertaining to "U-Boote westwärts !," a German WWII movie promoting the Kriegsmarine (1941/1942), along with a manual of the German Kriegsmarine (1943): - Illustrierter Film-Kurier [Nr. 3203]: U-Boote westwärts !: Quarto. Unpaginated. [8]pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. This issue of the German film periodical "Illustrierter Film-Kurier" focuses on the movie "U-Boote westwärts !," and includes synopsis, production information, star portraits, and production stills. Directed by Günther Rittau and starring Herbert Wilk, Heinz Engelmann, and Joachim Brennecke among others, "U-Boote westwärts !" was a 1941 German war propaganda film promoting the Kriegsmarine, and The Third Reich's most spectacular U-Boat picture! Surprisingly the Third Reich's film studios produced fewer than twenty pictures that dealt directly with combat during World War II. Five war films were issued in 1941. The finest of them, "U-Boote westwärts !," was directed by Günther Rittau, one of cinema's most celebrated cinematographers, who shot four of the greatest motion pictures ever made: "Siegfried," "Kriemhild's Revenge," "Metropolis," and "The Blue Angel" (all four as camera operator). The movie was shot on location in and near Kiel, one of Germany's largest … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mann, Thomas, Schriftsteller und Nobelpreisträger (1875-1955).
Pacific Palisades, 19. Mai [1943]. 1 S. 4to. An Shirley Lawrence, die sich ihm als Übersetzerin vorstellig gemacht hatte: „[ ] As far as my assurance is concerned that I would call your name to the attention of the gentlemen who compiles the book to which the Moses story is to be the introduction, I have to tell you that he had arranged for the translation beforehand; consequently I could not exert any influence upon the choice of the translator. I hope that I have not raised false expectations and want you to know that your name and address remains in my files, so that I may refer to it if an opportunity arises in the future [ ]". – Die „Moses story", d. i. die Erzählung „Das Gesetz", war eine Auftragsarbeit, die Thomas Mann im Frühjahr 1943 für einen von Armin L. Robinson herausgegebenen Erzählungsband „The Ten Commandments: Ten Short Novels of Hitler’s War Against the Moral Code" verfaßt hatte; in dem im Sommer/Herbst des Jahres bei Simon & Schuster erschienenen Band, der auch Beiträge von u. a. Rebecca West, Franz Werfel, Andre Maurois und Sigrid Undset umfaßt, ist Thomas Mann Erzählung in einer englischen Übersetzung von George R. Marek unter dem Titel „Thou shalt have no other gods before me" zu finden; zwei Jahre darauf veröffentlichte sie Alfred A. Knopf in einer Übertragung von Manns bevorzugter Übersetzerin Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter (1877–1963) unter dem Titel „The Tables of the Law". – Thomas Mann hatte Miss Lawrence schon in einem Brief v. 15. CACHEUX (François)
Belle correspondance amicale et professionnelle. 1943. [Click Below for Full Description]

GRAVES, Robert, and HODGE, Alan.
Jonathan Cape, London. First edition. Octavo. 446 pages. Issued without rear endpapers. The book is divided into two sections: ''The Reader over Your Shoulder'' (206 pages of general instruction) and ''Examinations and Fair Copies'', in which passages selected from the works of the foremost authors of the day are (savagely) taken apart, analysed and rewritten in more elegant English. Each exercise is concluded with a comment on the author. Those subjected to this treatment include: T.S. Eliot, Eric Partridge, an editor of The Oxford English Dictionary, F.R. Leavis, J.M. Keynes, Clive Bell, Daphne du Maurier, Major-General J.F.C. Fuller, Ernest Hemingway, Aldous Huxley, Cecil Day Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Stephen Spender, Ezra Pound, Herbert Read, I.A. Richards, Bertrand Russell, H.G. Wells et al.The dedication copy, inscribed by one of the authors on the front free endpaper: ''Jenny Nicholson with love from Robert Graves 1943''. The printed dedication reads, ''To Jenny Nicholson''. The recipient is Graves's daughter who was a journalist, and one wonders whether, by using ''to'' instead of the blander ''for'', he is making some sort of point.Fore-edge spotted. Cloth a bit bubbled. Very good in very good, nicked, rubbed and dusty dustwrapper a bit tanned at the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR
Washington, D.C. 1943. n/a. MAGNIFICENT WARTIME LETTER BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT ON ACHIEVING LONG-LASTING PEACE. This letter, signed and typed by world-renowned social reformer Eleanor Roosevelt on White House letterhead and dated June 28, 1943 (World War II), is addressed to Mr. Jerome Darrow, soldier and army newspaper editor, and reads in full: The White House Washington June 28, 1943. Dear Mr. Darrow: I am very glad to send you a message for Talkie-Talkie, your weekly Army newspaper. I understand only too well how hard it must be for our soldiers who stand guard in the jungle and outposts which we are now occupying. I want to say to them that on every hand I hear how wonderfully the men are accepting the strange new conditions under which they live and how cheerfully they live through discomfort and boredom. I only hope that beneath it all they realize they are part of the great fighting force which can only win because each unit has done its part. I lived through the last war and its aftermath and therefore I am very much concerned about the future which we build as a result of this war. I hope that we have learned that peace is not something which comes because we sign a piece of paper. It is something which has to be built year by year and the piece of paper is only the foundation. It is the justice and the change for a better future for the whole world which will make our peace foundation stronger and our change to bring a continuance of peace in the future, better. To do this for the world we must do it at home also and I hope that the boys in the jungle are thinking a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT-EXUPERY, ANTOINE DE.
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First Edition; French language trade issue. Four pages creased; pencil owner's inscription; very good in a soiled and worn dust jacket. The French language issue, understandably we'd suggest, given the publication circumstances, is much scarcer than its English one. Saint-Exupery wrote this work while in this country, returning to fly for France, perishing over the Mediterranean the following year. Le Petit Prince was issued posthumously in his home country. SAINT-EXUPERY, ANTOINE DE.
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First Edition; French language issue. One of 260 numbered copies, signed by the author; the English language limited edition comprised 525 numbered and signed copies. Gift inscription in French and English on the front free endpaper; minor stains; very good in a chipped and stained, good dust jacket. The jacket spine is numbered identically with the book (although the ink is faded), as called for in the limited issues of this book. While the French language issue was limited to roughly half of the English language one, it has always seemed scarcer than that difference would account for. Terlecki, Tymon
London: Wiadomosci Polskie (Polish Messages), 1943. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Quarto. (1) 14pp. Stapled typed manuscript. Remarks of the editor of the magazine "Fighting Poland" on the atrocities in and the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto. Terlecki was inspired by a 28 page brochure entitled "Liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto - A Report" by M. B., an unidentified author who was an employee of an institution inside the Warsaw Ghetto. 'The impressions gathered in this center of madness were so unbelievable, so contorted, so illogical as if it were a horrible dream.' The months, even weeks before July 22nd made one believe that stabilization of life in the ghetto was the goal. New schools and Kindergärten were opened and as late as July 18, 1942, four days before the order to resettle all Jews to the East was given. Even at this point the president of the Jewish Council announced that the ghetto was in no danger. Terlecki covers the strategy behind these announcements designed to lull the Jews into a false sense of security and elaborates on psychological constellations of perpetrators as well as the victims and goes on to describe in detail what can't be called anything but "madness" once the brutal actions of the Germans unfolded. The report includes detailed facts about "the last act of the tragedy in Treblinka" and an epilog describing the gruesome battle and the Jewish resistance to it from December of 1942 through May of 1943. Two cards of Dr. A. Silberschein, Genéve, 10, Avenue de Miremont with text "Mit freundlicher Empfehlung und Gruss (With frien … [Click Below for Full Description]

KARSKI, Jan.
London: Published on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Hutchinson & Co., 1943. London: Published on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Hutchinson & Co.,, 1943. Note addressed to the Governments of the United Nations on December 10th, 1942, and other documents. Octavo. Original self-wraps, wire-stitched. Front wrapper faded, minor rust stains from staples. A very good copy. First and only edition. An early revelation of the methods of the Holocaust based upon the extraordinary work of Jan Karski. Karski was a remarkable figure: a graduate in law and diplomacy from Jan Kazimierz University, he served as a diplomat in Germany, Britain and Switzerland in the late 1930s, before joining the ministry of foreign affairs in 1939. Mobilised on the outbreak of war, he was captured by the Red Army, but managed to conceal his true rank and was exchanged into German hands, thus avoiding Katyn. He escaped from the train taking him into captivity, and made his way to Warsaw where he joined the resistance. He was instrumental in setting up a secret courier system to communicate with the Polish government in exile, and himself made a number of trips to France and Britain. In 1942 Karski was selected to carry this special report to Sikorski in London, detailing Nazi atrocities in Poland. In gathering eyewitness evidence he made two visits to the Warsaw ghetto, and also gained access to an extermination camp, believed by him to have been Belzec, disguised as a Ukrainian guard, a selection of which evidence is presented here. For the next three years he trav … [Click Below for Full Description]

DERAIN, André - RABELAIS François.
Composé nouvellement par Maitre Alcofrybas Nasier. Paris, Albert Skira, 1943. in-folio (mm 345x280), pp. 192, a fogli sciolti sotto copertina, camicia e astuccio editoriali. [Wilde, Oscar (source work)]: Blum, Edwin [screenwriter]
Culver City: Loew's Incorporated / Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, 1943. 135 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in stencil printed wrappers, paper label. Some mild creasing, label chipped along lower edge, some relevant pencil and colored pencil annotations and notes on wrappers ("Hold for Legal Research"), but a good copy, internally very good. Department routing slip paper-clipped to upper wrapper. An unspecified but early revised pre- production draft of this screenplay, loosely based on Oscar Wilde's 1887 story, with a portion of the narrative transposed to a contemporary WWII setting. The film was directed by Jules Dassin, starred Charles Laughton, Robert Young and Margaret O'Brien, and was released in July of 1944. The wrapper bears stamps indicating this is a "Temporary Complete" draft, retained as a "File Copy," as well as the characteristic wartime conservation directives. The script went through further revisions well into the third quarter of 1943, and likely beyond.
