Sherwin, Sterling; Harry K. McClintock
New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co, 1943. Hardcover. Very good. SIGNED. 47pp. Small folio [31 cm] in light blue cloth with spine and cover labels. Numerous pale spots to boards, backstrip quite mobile, rubbing to extremities, edgewear and light chipping to labels, upper corners bumped; original paper price label on front pastedown. Paperclipped (with attendant rust stains) to the first page of the song "Casey Jones" is a clipping from Time about Jones' real-life wife, Janie Jones, who protested all her life that, contrary to the song's lyric, her children did not have "another papa on the Salt Lake Line." Also clipped in the same place are two small pages of typed notes on McClintock, in the style of library index cards but on thin paper. One reads that McClintock "was on the staff of KFRC, San Francisco, during the 1930's and part of the 1940's . . . He was a drinker, and appears to have left the station for that reason." Lyrics and music for twenty songs, including "Come de Midnight Special," "I've Been Working on the Railroad," and "New River Train". With B&W photos. Dahl, Roald; Walt Disney
Random House, New York, 1943. First edition of Dahl's rare first book, with 14 vibrant full-page illustrations by Walt Disney Productions. Quarto, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some small chips and wear. Dahl was sent to Washington in 1942 as an assistant air attache for the British Embassy. After having a story published anonymously in the Saturday Evening Post, he was encouraged by C. S. Forester. He produced The Gremlins, a children's story expanding on a mythical creature enshrined for years in RAF lore (notwithstanding Dahl's claims to have invented the word) and sent it to Sidney Bernstein, the head of the British Information Service, who sent it on to Walt Disney. Disney decided to make it into a movie, at one point bringing Dahl to Hollywood to work on the screenplay. The story was published in Cosmopolitan in December of 1942, and as a book by Random House six months later. The film project, however, was sidelined and has never been produced. The story was received positively: Eleanor Roosevelt read it to her grandchildren, and invited Dahl to the White House. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

BATAILLE Georges
[Click Below for Full Description]

Mario Briglia, Ernesto B. Rodriguez, Tomas Enrique Briglia. (Dir)
4to. #1 Nov/Dic 1943 - #9 Oct/Nov 1945. (Complete set). Bound in full red cloth. More broad in its ambitions, Cosmorama intended "to make the poetic message invade all areas of popularity seeping into the senses of the most diverse groups of people, is to develop an authentic glory of which we could all participate by natural consequence." To the aforementioned brothers Briglia and Ernesto B. Rodríguez, we must add the names of Bernardo Horrach, Aníbal Calvari and Carlos De Tomás in the conduct of Cosmorama. Among all of them they planned correspondentships in the interior of the country and abroad, so that the pages of that magazine offered during the whole time that its publication lasted the simultaneous presences of the provincial poets, as well as representatives of the Chilean, Uruguayan literature , Brazilian, Peruvian and Colombian. With regard to their sense of poetry, it should be noted that the youth of Cosmorama proclaimed an attitude different from that of other groups of their own promotion, and even expressed their dissidence, as can be seen in this paragraph that we select from a published article in No. 8: "We refer to the elegiac and painful tone of much of the current poetry of our country. It is devastating to find young people who moan, who cry, who fall between longing and grief. Man no longer has the modesty of his tears. " And later: "A certain aristocratic sense that to certain young people without deep root in our land and our time, gives them a vague varnish of distinction, and a certain elegant languor. As a consequence of the previous hypothesis … [Click Below for Full Description]

(1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

BATAILLE Georges
s.l: BATAILLE Georges. Autograph letter, signed, to Denise Rollin: "Cela me dechire toujours de me separer de vous." "It always tears me up to part from you."N. d. (1943), 13,5 x 20,8 cm, 2 pages on a single leafAutograph letter signed from Georges Bataille to Denise Rollin, 46 lines in black ink to one leaf, dampstain to upper right, not touching text. The majority of the letter is given over to the search for a house in Vezelay: "I've already seen a house and an apartment." In 1943, Georges Bataille had the idea of renting a house in Vezelay where the couple could move in with Laurence, the daughter of Georges and Sylvia, and Jean (alias Bepsy), Denise Rollin's son. The lovers had just parted: "It always tears me up to part from you. Yesterday I felt a terrible malaise. I'd hardly managed to come out of it when I realized that I had surely not come for nothing and that we would be able to settle here."To help Denise in his choice, he describes to her the various advantages and inconveniences of the two places: "The house is really good, but sadly has one serious downside: the garden ends in a low wall onto which Jean could climb and fall down the other side, which is lower. We look out over the countryside from high up and far off into the distance. The garden is pretty, the interior a little sad and dilapidated. The apartment isn't bad but it doesn't have a garden and no view of the countryside either." The couple took great pains in choosing the ideal place to bring together their patched-up family. There was even a suggestion of bringing Sylvia Bataille and Jacques Laca … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDERSON, W.
Nottingham: Printed by Thomas Forman & Sons Ltd, c.1943. Colour lithographic map. Sheet 490 x 745mm. Folded as issued. A propaganda map of South Africa, showing how the industry and agriculture of the continent was helping the war effort. Little vignettes mark the cattle, sheep, grain and wood regions, and icons note the various types of mining. The map is decorated with a coat of arms, a large compass rose, a flagpole and a map showing the continent of Africa. A text box reads: 'South Africa is to-day an arsenal and repair base for the Armies of the United Nations. Known originally as an agricultural and pastoral country and as a producer of gold and diamonds, the Union has so accelerated her industrial production that in four years of war it has reached a figure which could not have been attained in peace-time in less than 25 years. The industries which have developed under the stress of war will form the basis of peace-time manufacture when hostilities have ceased'. This map continues a series of maps of Commonwealth countries published during the Second World War. Most were signed by Leslie MacDonald Gill; the artist here is unknown. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Beatrix Potter
1943. A good illustrated autograph letter signed by Beatrix Potter, 'Beatrix Heelis', January 9th 1943. She writes from Castle Cottage to Margaret 'Hetty' Douglas, in full: 'Spot looks a sensible dog and very well set up on his legs, and strong enough to take care of himself. He looks a very suitable dog, for guard and company. A good brown chest, and a very pleasing face, well marked. Tell him I approve of him and I approve of his dear whiskers! I hope you won't clip him into an object when he is middle-aged and stout. We were glad to hear that you and Ina are getting on all right. It's unpleasant weather, an awfully wild night (Monday morning) but pleasantly surprised to see no worse snow, and thawing a bit. The roads are like glass. With love & all good wishes for New Year.' Potter adds a small sketch of a bearded dog within the body of the letter. In fine condition, with light creasing and intersecting folds. Hetty Douglas was the niece of Mary Welsh Scott, the wife of Beatrix's younger brother, Walter Bertram. During their childhood both Beatrix and her brother kept an array of pets: rabbits, mice, frogs, lizards, snakes, and a bat - creatures that helped unify their love for nature and art by serving as models for their endless sketching. ELIOT, T S
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1943. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,, 1943. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. A very good copy in the lightly toned dust jacket, a few nicks, tiny chip to rear panel, short split at head of front flap fold. First collected edition, first printing, with the slug "first American edition" to the verso of the title page. Two printings were produced prior to publication. The first printing constituted 4,165 copies, but the poor quality of the printing led to the publisher destroying all but 788 copies, which were sent out to retain copyright. The work was reprinted, with these second printing copies distinguished by the absence of the "first American edition" slug, here present. The small number of copies of the first printing which survived the publisher's decision means that the book is now scarce in any state, but especially so in good condition with the dust jacket preserved.

States "first American edition, " as called for; in first-state dust jacket with $2.00 price in upper corner of front flap, back flap blank, and nine titles listed in bold on back panel ending with "Old Possum's...." Collects BURNT NORTON, EAST COKER, THE DRY SALVAGES, and LITTLE GIDDING, which were first published separately in pamphlet form in London from 1940 to 1942. Cyril Connolly included FOUR QUARTETS in his "Modern Movement: 100 Key Books 1880-1950, " saying it was "the most important poem since Yeat's 'The Tower, ' and, as many think, of the century." Good to very good with touch of faint scattered foxing and gilt on spine somewhat dulled (still very readable). The E. McKnight Kauffer-designed dust jacket shows a little aging and has been professionally repaired, filling in chipping along top edge and closing one tear. Still, overall, very good. This is the only such copy we've seen and currently the only jacketed, double signed 1st in commerce. This title was the 1944 runner up ('Honor') book to Slobodkin's 'Many Moons' which won the Medal. I feel this is a better book, and the ALA committee seemingly rectified the situation by awarding Elizabeth the Caldecott Medal the following year for 'Prayer for a Child'. We could go on about how scarce signed, jacketed, first issue, ALA awarded books from the WWII era and prior are, but we'll assume viewers have some sense of the market and the esteem these books deserve. Scarce Pacific diary, complete with the type of graphic and detailed content that was not permitted for enlisted personnel to document and keep. Unusual to see as complete and synchronized as this, especially with artwork. Time line of entries matches exactly with the officially documented Pacific tour of LST-20, also concurrent with G.riswold's manuscript map and artwork. Spine tanned . Some smudges on cover and pages. Please review photos. War Bonds and Radio. This is my Antique Roadshow stumper. This is a U.S. Treasury Report printed in book form in 1943. Only 50 copies produced. I have only located one other copy at the Library of Congress. I did take this book to the Antique Roadshow in 2014. No records of this book coming up for auction were found. All three of the guys at the book table thought it was a great find and threw out some crazy numbers on value. My price is a little less crazy It is priced to sell. The report was done by Alfred N. Steele, who at the time was VP of Marketing for Coca Cola. Later Steele became the CEO of Pepsi and husband to Joan Crawford. Harry Goz played Steele in Mommy Dearest. This book is a great piece of history. Great buy for a Bond Trader or a Treasury Department executive... Please review photos... Book has a wonderful inscription to "Sherwood who would argue even with the Bible". The book was owned by a book binder from the East Coast then acquired by Chelsea Books(now closed) in San Francisco then in my library since around 1997.....Now waiting to be yours. Snyder, Lorain R. "Doc"
N.p. Four octavo volumes. Standard issue blank books printed by the Government Printing Office that were owned by Lorain R. Snyder, who served as a Gunner's Mate aboard the U.S.S. Richmond from 1941 to 1943. The first two volumes contain Snyder's notes and assignments on such matters as wrecking mines, depth charges, and ammunition, as well as his basic duties. These notes are enhanced by Snyder's draftsman-like color illustrations, which detail the structure and functioning of the various weaponry with which he would have been familiar. These include mines, the .45 caliber automatic pistol, and roller-bearing gun mounts. In addition, Snyder -- whose nickname was "Doc" -- provides illustrated charts of semaphore, alphabet, naval and weather flags, map cross-hatching legends, and military insignia for various countries. In the other two volumes, Snyder switches from theory to practice as he begins a tour aboard the Richmond, and the blank books become a daily logbook. Included are his rather restrained comments on Pearl Harbor ("Sunday evening -- War!!!/Oh my! Well here's what we've been waiting for . Arizona and Oklahoma got it bad!"), a lengthy first-hand account of the Battle of Komandorskis off the coast of Siberia, as well as a long semi-bawdy ballad about an old maid on Waikiki entitled "A Torrid Tragedy of the Tropics." In these volumes, Snyder's illustrations are less abundant, but they include a detailed inventory of his thirteen tattoos, including the location of each, and a map of the Pacific showing the area covered by the Richmond during Snyder's tour of duty. 1943. Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 67 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. James Ellison, Frances Dee, Tom Conway, Edith Barrett, James Bell, dir: Jacques Tourneur; RKO. The story (based on Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre) of a nurse who ventures to the West Indies to care for the wife of a plantation manager. She falls in love with him and seeks to cure the wife of her mental paralysis by involving herself in a native voodoo ceremony. A brilliant and atmospheric tale produced by master Val Lewton, the horror suggested by the use of lighting, shadows and camera work. The images on this poster are scary and the graphics bold, reflecting the feel of this suspenseful classic. This fine copy has been preserved on linen. There has been touch-up to the folds, with some extra touch-up in the "H" of "WITH" and the "O" of "ZOMBIE". There has also been some touch-up and repair to the blank white margins and at corners, and there were a few tiny bits of missing paper along the top edge. NEAR FINE
