BLANCHOT
s.l. (Paris): 1943. BLANCHOT Maurice - Romancières d'aujourd'hui. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets BLANCHOT Maurice Romancières d'aujourd'hui. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 3 1/2 pages in-4, 4 1/2 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

Arondeus, Willem
Amsterdam: 1943. Amsterdam: dated 1941 [actually, 1943]. ALS on lined prison stationary, marked 'S.G.S. 8105-1942'. 29 lines, written in pencil. Addressed to "Eep" [Marius Roland Holst], and signed "Tiky." One line blacked out, likely by a censor. With an accompanying letter by Willem Sandberg to Roland Holst about the damage done to it by the 'tentoonstellers' (='exhibitors'), dated September 15, 1945. With Sandberg's envelope and an original photo of Arondéus, reproduced from a larger photo, and related ephemera including 7 contemporary news clippings related to his imprisonment and execution, an issue of the rare underground Dutch Resistance newspaper De Vrue Kunstenaar, with a notice of his death, and two prospectuses for publications by Arondeus. One of the final letters written by Arondeus, only four days before he was executed by the Nazis for his participation in the fire-bombing of the Amsterdam public records office, an action taken in order to make it more difficult for the Nazi's to track down the indentity of Jews in the Netherlands for deportation to concentration camps. Willem used his last words before his execution to state that he wanted to show that Homosexuals were not cowards. This year marks the 75th anniversary of this courageous act. The letter is transcribed in Rudi van Dantzig's book "Het Leven Van Willem Aroundéus 1894-1943", p. 443. It is the next to last letter published in the book, followed only by a letter written a half hour later. van Dantzig was not able to transcribe the censored section, but it is our hope that some future institution or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aleister Crowley
1943. An original manuscript list of errands by Aleister Crowley. An amusing and revealing holograph list of errands which Crowley prepared for his disciple J. G. Bayley to undertake on his behalf. December 1st 1943. Written on both sides of a single sheet of tall, narrow, note-paper, (approx. 8" x 3 1/4"). A charming list - Crowley details errands that he wished Bayley to do for him. They included delivering a message and making telephone enquiries, shopping: "Old Compton St. (shop on N. side) Get ugliest, vulgarest, dirtiest birthday or greeting card you can find," "try shops for up-to-date Latin Grammar ... try Marks and Watkins for the Equinox No. V," searching out Shetland cloth (the preferred material for his suits), and delivering "shoes, slippers and a pouch" to a shop (possibly for repair?). In an unusual demonstration of kindness, Crowley also instructs Bayley to find one William Churchill (possibly the photographer Crowley used on occasion) and "give him packets of cigarettes, make sure that he is looking after himself properly; help him if required." An interesting testament to the day to day concerns of "the Beast." A horizontal fold in the middle, some minor wear, else in very good condition. Guaranteed to be genuine as it comes with a signed certificate of authentication from Keith Richmond of Weiser Antiquarian Books. Free expedited shipping within the US with tracking, insurance, and signature confirmation. If you have any questions feel free to ask and don't forget to check out my other listings.

Along with Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade novels, the Chandler series redefined the mystery genre, introducing it to a distinctly American vein. All of the first four Marlowe books, read as much for their vivid descriptions of 1930's-40's Los Angeles as for their engaging plots were made into movies. This novel had a modest first printing of only 6000 copies. As a book produced under wartime paper usage restrictions, the thin and cheap paper used to produce this book makes this a particularly difficult title to obtain in desirable condition.. [Japanese-Americans in World War II]: Kuge, Toshiaki
[Atlanta: Albert Love Enterprises, 1943. [112]pp. Profusely illustrated. Publisher's printed cloth. Some rubbing and edge wear, corners worn. Internally clean. Very good. Accompanied by Toshi Kuge's original U.S. Army helmet, two dress caps, and six garrison caps. A small archive of World War II service by a Japanese-American medical officer, including a scarce military annual commemorating the training of the famed Japanese-American unit, the 442nd Combat Team. In a dark period of Japanese-American history, this unit - composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry, called Nisei - fought with uncommon distinction in Italy, Germany, and southern France. Since the Second World War, the 442nd has become the most highly decorated military unit in the history of the United States Armed Forces, with twenty-one Medal of Honor recipients and 9,486 Purple Hearts. Their motto, "Go for Broke," embodied their spirit and lives on as a testament to their fortitude. The annual opens with the pledge of allegiance, a dedication, a history of the unit, and laudatory quotes by and a photograph of President Roosevelt, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, and Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy. The irony here is, of course, that Roosevelt, Stimson, and McCloy were three of the key figures who decided on the course of Japanese-American internment camps as a "military necessity." Following their remarks, the album is full of photographic illustrations showing the 442nd in training at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, regimental and company group shots, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rodgers, Richard (music); Oscar Hammerstein II (book, lyrics);
The Theatre Guild. Draft script for the original run of the 1943 Broadway musical. Copy belonging to member of the dancing ensemble Patrick Meaney, with his name and address in holograph ink on the front wrapper, and holograph annotations throughout. Also included are two sets of musical notation, for Violin C and 3rd Trumpet respectively, each with Meaney's name printed on them and additional holograph annotations, for the songs "Oh, What a Beatiful Mornin'," "People Will Say We're in Love," and "Oklahoma," as well as a single 8 x 10 inch photograph featuring four headshots of Meaney and his name and address written on the verso. A landmark in American musical theatre, based on the 1931 play "Green Grow the Lilacs" by Lynn Riggs, and the first musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical opened at the St. James Theatre on May 31, 1943 and ran over five years for a total of 2212 performances, a record for a Broadway show at the time. Rodgers and Hammerstein would receive a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944, although the original run would receive no Tony Award nominations, primarily because the award didn't exist yet. Revived five times on Broadway, including a limited 75th Anniversary run begun April 7, 2019, and the basis for the 1955 film, directed by Fred Zimmerman, and starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, and Rod Steiger, as well as a staple of musical theatre at all levels.
