Curt Siodmak
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A signed copy of a significant work of science fiction. Published the previous year in three parts in Black Mask. Adapted for cinema three times, and also for Orson Welles' radio dramatisation (of War of the Worlds fame). An over-powered brain in a vat, not much more that needs to be added to that synopsis. A somewhat popular trope. The book itself is signed by the author to the title page without inscription [Bleiler, p180: Paranormal abilities and biological SF: Pringle, p91]. Jacket has a little bumping and wear to the spine tips, and some tape ghosting to the flaps and rear plate. Some more ghosting to jacket reverse. Spine tips bumped to the boards. Cover art by W. Deffaa [7826, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1943.

B. , Mr. ; Creel, George.
Springfield, Ohio: Collier's, 1943. 1st separate edition. Original paper wrappers, color. 8vo, [13] pages. Color illustration on cover, black and white illustration in text. This booklet is a reprint from the issues for October 30th and November 6th, 1943. From the Editorial Foreword: "Mr. B, in Washington recently on some secret errand, knows every detail of the indomitable organization that keeps Polish resistance alive against Hitler’s terrorists and Himmler’s torture specialists. A university student at the outbreak of war in 1939, he fought the invaders until captured by the Russians. Escaping only to fall into the hands of the Germans, he got free a second time and reached France by way of Hungary and Italy. He fought with Polish brigades until the collapse of France in 1940, and his government then sent him back to Poland to aid in the creation of an effective underground movement. Daring, resourceful and a master linguist, speaking five languages without a trace of accent, Mr. B has been used as a liaison, slipping from country to country. Only twenty-nine there is no youth left in him, for aside from the hard dangerous life, his face and body have known the fists, whips and blackjacks of the Gestapo. Tight-lipped after four years of hunting and being hunted, the lean, drawn Pole talked only when convinced that his story would prove helpful to the cause for which he and his countrymen risk death and horrors worse than death. For obvious reasons, many of the underground’s most spectacular and brilliantly successful activities must remain undisclosed, but what can be … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hugh B. Cave
New York: 1943. VG to VG + for a 75 year old book. Protection of the inner dust jacket by the outer has left it in a very rare, nearly unworn, unaged state. See images. For collectors of works by Hugh B. Cave, this may be quite a find. Second printing of the 1943 First Edition. The book was mistakenly wrapped with 2 dust jackets. This unusual circumstance has provided a rare level of protection to the inner jacket allowing it to maintain a great deal of its original condition. The colors have retained a significant level of their original saturation. Artifacts of age such as yellowing of white areas, time induced fading & UV damage have been nearly completely avoided leaving a 75 year old dust jacket which is in as about as close to mint condition as one could imagine. There are areas of physical wear, primarily to the spine ends and edges but they are not significant; even on the outer jacket . The book itself is in great shape. The boards are flat with only modestly bumped corners and spine ends. There are some light stipple marks to the front and back of unknown origin. Binding is square and intact. Ships insured and very well protected with bubble wrap and packaged with a great deal of care in a corrugated cardboard box. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

New York: Reynal & Hitchock. ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY: THE LITTLE PRINCE First Edition 1st Print 1943 Reynal. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. I found this in a vintage shop. There is no dust jacket. There is a book plate in the front cover dated July 1943 for a Public Library. There is pen writing on the very first page and pencil writing in the corner. There is a small remainder of a Due Date library sticker on the last page. The binding seems tight and good. There is some staining on front and back cover. Also, I see some wear at the edges, the book cover fabric is a little frayed on front bottom right corner. Some light finger prints or light spots/stains on some (30%?) of pages, approximately. No writing or drawing beyond first page as already noted. Please ask any questions. This is a sweet book. Thanks, Kathy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Full, Moroccan black leather. Boards and spinal compartments gilt ruled. Base of boards and raised bands tooled. Hand sewn headbands and all edges gilt. Beautiful, decorative, hand-made paper end-papers with tooled leather inlays to paste-downs. "Twelve publishers rejected the manuscript before an editor at the Bobbs-Merrill Company risked his job to get it published. Contemporary reviewers' opinions were polarized. Some praised the novel as a powerful paean to individualism, while others thought it overlong and lacking sympathetic characters. Initial sales were slow, but the book gained a following by word of mouth and became a bestseller. More than 6.5 million copies of The Fountainhead have been sold worldwide and it has been translated into more than 20 languages". [Attributes: First Edition]

MELVILLE, Herman
[Brattleboro, VT]: Limited Editions Club, 1943. Two quarto volumes (7-1/2" x 10") bound in full dark sheepskin with gilt lettering on the spines. Copy #323 of 1000 with color and black-and-white plates after paintings by Boardman Robinson and SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. One of the most difficult books of the press to obtain in decent condition because of the tendency of the leather to dry. When copies are seen, usually the binding is so dry it is crumbling. The limitation of 1000 copies is not stated, nor is the typical limitation of 1500 copies stated, but a letter from the publisher, George Macy, to a subscriber in another copy we handled explained the limitation (not included here). The leather is still supple though the spines are somewhat dry with wear to the tips and edges. Good, lacking the slipcase. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1943. Condition: Comme neuf. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
