Leslie Ragan
New York Central System, 1943. Condition: Fine (poster condition A-). 19-7/8 by 27-3/4 inches. Six-color off-set lithograph on cardstock (as issued). A terrific "Rosie the Riveter" image of a woman dressed in mannish clothes oiling a locomotive wheel with a mechanical pump. Like the classic "We Can Do It!" poster, this was issued by a private company looking for women workers. The history of this poster is not documented, but it is a very scarce image of a woman doing a man's work during the Second World War. Arguably, it's the grittiest such image. The other, better known, posters of women on the home front -- the "We Can Do It!" woman and the WOWs (Women Ordinance Workers) -- show women in work clothes, but not actually working. Your humble cataloguer thinks this is one of the very best posters from the Second World War. The artist, Leslie Ragan, made many posters for the New York Central System railroad. His Art Deco-influenced travel posters are classics in the genre. His best-known work routinely sells in the five-figure range. Those posters, while exceptional examples of design and advertising, are not landmarks of social history, like this poster. Scarce. No copies on OCLC or in the Library of Congress. The Henry Ford Museum records a copy. Fine (poster condition A-).

ZWEIG, Stefan.
Stockholm: Bermann-Fischer Verlag, 1943. Stockholm: Bermann-Fischer Verlag,, 1943. ["Chess".] Octavo. Original buckram-backed blue boards, gilt titles to spine. With the dust jacket. Small nicks to the head and fore-corners, faint mark to front panel, otherwise a fine copy. First European edition, first printing, scarce and in exceptional condition. Zweig's great chess novella (published in English as "Chess" or "The Royal Game") was first printed in Buenos Aires in 1942, but that edition is rare - the Stockholm edition is the first printed on the continent that Zweig had fled. One of the most popular writers in the world in the 1920s and 30s, Zweig fled Austria in 1934 facing the rise of fascism. He settled eventually in Petroplis, Brazil, until, despairing for the future of humanity, he and his wife took their lives in 1942 with an overdose of barbiturates. Schachnovelle, in which the chess-mad protagonist is found fleeing persecution in Europe on a cruise ship bound to South America, masterfully reflects these anxieties.

Chandler, Raymond
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine / Dust Jacket Included. First edition, first printing of the author's fourth Philip Marlowe mystery. One of 6,000 copies. Publisher's pale green cloth, lettered in dark green; in the original pictorial black dust jacket designed by Norman Reeves, with an illustration to the front panel of a white house on a purple mountain with shadowy figures at the foot, lettered in pale pink. A beautiful copy, with just a hint of toning to the extremities, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some minor rubbing to the extremities, very faint toning to the spine, closed tears and creasing to the flap folds, some light soiling to the rear panel, otherwise fresh and clean, without the usual chipping. Overall, a very bright and attractive copy. Scarce with a dust jacket in such excellent condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Bruccoli A.4.1.a. Published on November 1, 1943, The Lady in the Lake takes Detective Philip Marlowe out of Los Angeles, his usual stomping grounds, to investigate the disappearance of a wealthy businessman's estranged wife Crystal. The investigation quickly becomes complicated when the man Crystal claimed to have run off with is also unaware of her whereabouts, and Chandler adds stolen identities, police corruption, and a shootout with American sentries to further twist the plot. As with many of his novels, Chandler based The Lady in the Lake's plot on various short stories he had previously written for literary magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Black Mask. Guthrie, Woody
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1943. New York: E. P. Dutton. 1943. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Book condition is Very Good; with a Very Good dust jacket. Edge wear to jacket, including a few chips. Two scuffs to paper at jacket rear panel. Minor foxing. Crease to bottom corner of a few pages. Text is clean and unmarked, frontispiece. First Edition is stated, first issue jacket present. An inscription as vibrant and humble as would be expected of Guthrie; written upside down, one can picture the book being handed to Guthrie and him signing before rotating the book. Guthrie tells the recipient, Marshall, "I hope you find some real 'fight' in this book..." Inscription is dated to April 1943, a few weeks after the book's publication. It would be difficult to underestimate Guthrie's influence on American folk music and as well as American popular music. As academic arguments persist about the great American novel, Guthrie's musical work and this book itself are distinctly American in attitude, imagery and fortitude--perpetuating and exemplifying the great American narrative that electrifies the significance of individual perspective, while in Guthrie's case also espousing his great compassion for the vulnerable and oppressed. ; Signed and inscribed by the author, Woody Guthrie, on the front end page. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author .

Near fine, tight copy in a bright, near fine dust jacket with some restoration to the extremities. This is the title in which Upfield and Inspector Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte were introduced to the American reading public. John GROTH
[ca 1943]. Condition: Nice condition: See description. Original cartoon illustration in black ink on watercolor paper; sheet size 63cm x 50cm (ca 24-13/4" x 19-3/4"). Signed in ink lower right. Drawing spotted and lightly soiled; glue remnants to margin, apparently from a removed mat; title in pencil below image; Very Good. A large and accomplished caricature in which a panicked Hitler attempts to prop up a collapsing statue of Mussolini; probably drawn following the Allied invasion of Sicily in July, 1943. Groth was at this time Art Director for Parade Publications, for which this cartoon was likely illustrated (though we are unsure whether it was ever published). Though best remembered as a wartime sketch-artist and book illustrator, Groth began his career as a printmaker and cartoonist very much in the social-realist mold, publishing some of his earliest work in such left-wing forums as The New Masses and PM. He was also the first Art Director at Esquire, which was founded in 1933. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean War.

Terlecki, Tymon
London: Wiadomosci Polskie (Polish Messages), 1943. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Quarto. (1) 14pp. Stapled typed manuscript. Remarks of the editor of the magazine "Fighting Poland" on the atrocities in and the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto. Terlecki was inspired by a 28 page brochure entitled "Liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto - A Report" by M. B., an unidentified author who was an employee of an institution inside the Warsaw Ghetto. 'The impressions gathered in this center of madness were so unbelievable, so contorted, so illogical as if it were a horrible dream.' The months, even weeks before July 22nd made one believe that stabilization of life in the ghetto was the goal. New schools and Kindergrten were opened and as late as July 18, 1942, four days before the order to resettle all Jews to the East was given. Even at this point the president of the Jewish Council announced that the ghetto was in no danger. Terlecki covers the strategy behind these announcements designed to lull the Jews into a false sense of security and elaborates on psychological constellations of perpetrators as well as the victims and goes on to describe in detail what can't be called anything but "madness" once the brutal actions of the Germans unfolded. The report includes detailed facts about "the last act of the tragedy in Treblinka" and an epilog describing the gruesome battle and the Jewish resistance to it from December of 1942 through May of 1943. Two cards of Dr. A. Silberschein, Genve, 10, Avenue de Miremont with text "Mit freundlicher Empfehlung und Gruss (With friendly reco … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sexuality
[Berkeley, CA]: (1943-1947). Condition: Very good +. 16mo. Top-bound spiral notebook, approx. 5.75 x 3.75 inches, penned rectos only in a neat, legible hand. Very good or better with some minor toning. Else clean, sound, and remarkably well-preserved. Original holograph notebook recording the mating rituals of an unnamed high school and college student during WWII. A sort of account book of the loves and losses of a young man from 1943 to 1947, the notebook meticulously notes girls' names, contact information, what they did on the dates (movies seen, diners visited, parties attended, etc.) and a brief assessment of each date ("enjoyable," "she likes to talk," "never enjoyed dancing so much," "no comment," "alright," "it's slow but sure"). This teenage Casanova was almost certainly a University of California student (he has a car which he regularly parks on the Berkeley campus). The diary documents a stream of girls, and a large part of the text describes the rise and fall of an extended romance with "Marilyn." For example: "If we were a bit older, one would say that we're engaged." And: "Undoubtedly she'd have enjoyed herself more with a trained dog -- which I'm not!" And eventually: "At long last the embers have turned black!" The diary concludes on Sept. 12, 1946 when the author is 19 years old and closes somewhat philosophically: "[T]hus I end this, the first report on girls that I know, or in many cases have known. I close with the realization that my search is not yet over. And so I look forward to new faces and new loves." One of the more remarkable vernacular histori … [Click Below for Full Description]

Max Ernst
New York: The Black Sun Press printed at the Gemor Press, 1943. Condition: Very good + / good + - Signed. Limited trade edition, one of 610 copies, quarto size, 54 pp., inscribed by Max Ernst. "Misfortunes of the Immortals" is a collaboration between two of the great surrealist artists, painter and sculptor Max Ernst (1891-1976) and poet Paul Eluard (1895-1985), and this illustrated book marks the beginning of their friendship. First published in 1920, the book contains the beautifully surreal lyrics of Eluard, with collages by Ernst; Ernst made the collages by cutting up wood engravings found in magazines and books, to form strange scenes of abstraction mixed with everyday objects, all seamlessly existing in the same picture plane. This volume is the limited trade edition, printed in 1943 by the Black Sun Press; the Press was formed by Harry and Caresse Crosby (1898-1929, 1891-1970, respectively), and continued under the operation of Caresse Crosby after Harry's death. This edition of Ernst and Eluard's book is the first to include English translations of the French poems, by Hugh Chisholm, who translated numerous works by French authors, and also includes three new drawings by Ernst, under the title "Twenty Years Later". Although this copy is not one of the deluxe editions mentioned in the colophon, it is inscribed by the artist Max Ernst; a captivating example of the interaction between text and image, and of Dada and Surreal art. DESCRIPTION: Full turquoise-coloured paper over boards, black-and-white collage illustration by Max Ernst with title in black on the front boa … [Click Below for Full Description]
