DAHL, Roald
New York: Random House, 1943. New York: Random House,, 1943. From the Walt Disney Production. A Royal Air Force Story. Quarto. Original red cloth-backed red boards, titles to spine in black, colour illustration to front board, yellow and red pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrated in colour and in black and white throughout. Light wear to extremities, a few paper discreet repairs to former paper tears. A good copy in the dust jacket, worn and creased, short closed tear at head of front panel. First edition, first printing. Roald Dahl's first book and his only collaboration with Walt Disney, The Gremlins was written as a promotional device for a feature-length Disney animation that was never produced, partly because the studio could not establish firm copyright in the "gremlin" characters (Dahl claimed to have invented them, though they had been common currency in the RAF and had appeared in print at least once before) and partly because the British Air Ministry wanted final approval of the script and production. It was eventually agreed that royalties would be split between the RAF Benevolent Fund and Dahl. The book is still described on the title and the front cover as being "From the Walt Disney Production", although the Disney studio had written to Dahl in August 1943 cancelling any further preproduction work.

Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 3 1/2 pages in-4, 4 1/2 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

Aquarell, über schwarzer Kreide, auf hellblauem Velin, 1943. Von Max Schwimmer. 20,3 x 21,8 cm (Darstellung) / 22 x 22 cm (Blatt). Vielleicht gelingt mir etwas Gutes. [Click Below for Full Description]

Manfred, Frederick
n.p. [Minneapolis?]: n.d. [ca. 1943-44]. Original corrected 229-page typescript of Manfred's first novel, likely used as the setting copy by the publishers, Webb Publishing Company of Saint Paul, with numerous typographical notes as to typesize, fonts, picas, etc. and also containing many what we assume to be last minute corrections to the text proper by Manfred himself - a couple of hundred instances where the typescript differs from the work as published. Also, a 6-page corrected typescript of the copy used for the dust jacket, also a setting copy, but with no corrections by Manfred. Also, page proofs for the same, tall 8vo, 129 leaves printed on rectos only, with extensive annotations throughout by the editior and printer, including the amending of a number of words and phrases in the text. Also, a first edition of the book, 8vo, pp. [8], 226; fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. This copy inscribed "For Paul C. Hillestad 'our' first book together. Frederick Feikema Manfred." (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 4 pages in-4, 4 1/2 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

Trauth, Eugen
1943. Loose leaf. vg. This handwritten correspondence of the Lance Corporal Eugen Trauth from the Eastern front to his girlfriend Rosemarie Geimer in Landstuhl, Westmark (near Kaiserslautern), contains thirty-one letters dated from October 1943 to May 1945, including thirteen letters with original watercolors painted to the front page of each letter, one letter with a pencil drawing on the front page, one sheet with watercolors on each side, two charcoal drawings without handwriting, two Feldpost letters, one with a pencil drawing depicting a smiling soldier in front of a large stack of letters and a postal sack, fifteen letters without artistic renderings, and one stapled collection of typed sonnets by Reinhold Schneider, the German poet who's work was banned by the Nazis due to his critical stance towards the government and his ties to the Nazi resistance. Some of Eugen's letters are only one or two pages long, others contain eight handwritten pages, one of them twenty-four.On January 30th, 1944, Eugen Trauth writes: "Today I am 21 years old. Yesterday I received your letters number 80 and 84. Thank you so much for that...." Some of the letters contain numbers, the highest is 95, referencing letters of Rosemarie Eugen is responding to. The letters are written in Süterlin, therefore only partially decipherable to us. It is, however, obvious that Eugen Trauth's thinking is deeply influenced by religious considerations, also becoming clear in his choice of sending the typed sonnets by Reinhold Schneider, all of which have religious connotations. Eugen and Rosemarie we … [Click Below for Full Description]
