[MALTA, Eduardo] Fernando de Pamplona
Bertrand Irmaos, 1943. Limited Edition. Softcover. Folio, 12 color plates, plus 1 black-and-white plate, and 4 leaves of text (email us for a more detailed description. A fair to good smoker's copy, with much of the spine missing, and the leaves rather loosely holding together. Still clean and bright internally, with just one flattened crease to one of the tipped-in illustrations. This is copy number 85 of an unstated limitation. A presentation copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the artist on a blank leaf: "A Sua Excelencia o Senhor Embaixador dos Estados Unidos em Lisboa, Henry Norweb, com a profunda simpatia e muita admiracao de Eduardo Malta. Novembro [?] 1944, Lisboa." Norweb was a notable figure in American history, having secured through negotiations with Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar the right to build an American Air Force base in the Azores in the very same month (November 1944) that this book was inscribed. Malta, the artist, would eventually become the director of the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea in the years before his death, and was well-known as an opponent of "modern art." He also painted some rather important figures in far-right politics, including Spanish falangist Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera. A scarce book, with fewer than half a dozen copies in worldwide library holdings, and even scarcer signed (we know of no other exmples). Fair to Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Jeff King, Maud Oakes, Joseph Campbell
New York: Pantheon Books. Inc, 1943. Where The Two Came To Their Father ~ A Navaho War Ceremonial ~ Given by Jeff King Text and Paintings Recorded by Maud Oakes Commentary by Joseph Campbell. The Bollingen Series 1 ~ Pantheon Books Inc. New York. Copyright 1943. The publication consists of a softcover book measuring 12" x 9" with printed text relating to the 18 original color pochoir prints. The prints measure 18" x 24" and are contained in a printed cloth portfolio with ribbon ties. This is a scarce first edition in the numbered sequence of the Bollingen Series. The designs originate from paintings executed in cornmeal, ground flowers, and the pollen of flowers, plants, and trees, and formed the basis for the Maud Oakes paintings. Jeff King (Hashkeh-yilth-e-yah 1865-1964) lived on the Pinedale Navaho Reservation. He served in the US Army as a scout from 1891-1911, and was the first Navaho to be interred in Arlington National Cemetery. He performed the ritual recorded in the book and the accompanying prints on the Pinedale Navaho Reservation for the departure of Navaho men to serve in the Army in WWII. Miss Oakes was allowed to observe and record the two day ceremony and kept sketches of the elaborate sand paintings that are an integral part of the ritual. The book and prints are well preserved with minimal indications of age and wear. There is minor soiling/toning, and some tears to the cloth portfolio and to the the immediate perimeter of some of the prints with occasional scuffing. There is a crease in the bottom right corner of one of the prints as can be seen in the fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ernst, Max and Eluard, Paul; Chisholm, Hugh (Translator)
The Black Sun Press [printed at the Gemor Press], 1943. Ernst, Max. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Limited trade edition, one of 610 copies, quarto size, 54 pp., inscribed by Max Ernst. Very good + / good +. "Misfortunes of the Immortals" is a collaboration between two of the great surrealist artists, painter and sculptor Max Ernst (1891-1976) and poet Paul Eluard (1895-1985), and this illustrated book marks the beginning of their friendship. First published in 1920, the book contains the beautifully surreal lyrics of Eluard, with collages by Ernst; Ernst made the collages by cutting up wood engravings found in magazines and books, to form strange scenes of abstraction mixed with everyday objects, all seamlessly existing in the same picture plane. This volume is the limited trade edition, printed in 1943 by the Black Sun Press; the Press was formed by Harry and Caresse Crosby (1898-1929, 1891-1970, respectively), and continued under the operation of Caresse Crosby after Harry's death. This edition of Ernst and Eluard's book is the first to include English translations of the French poems, by Hugh Chisholm, who translated numerous works by French authors, and also includes three new drawings by Ernst, under the title "Twenty Years Later". Although this copy is not one of the deluxe editions mentioned in the colophon, it is inscribed by the artist Max Ernst; a captivating example of the interaction between text and image, and of Dada and Surreal art. ___DESCRIPTION: Full turquoise-coloured paper over boards, black-and-white collage illustration by Max Ernst with title in black o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Treasury Department-issued War Bonds poster, featuring an illustration of a Russian peasant woman weeping in front of the smoking rubble of her home directly beneath the slogan "...and WE talk about sacrifice. Original illustrated poster, lithographed in colors and measuring 51.5cm x 71cm (20.25" x 28"). Professionally linen-backed, with old fold lines faintly visible; some expert, pinpoint retouching to a few spots along lower edge, else Fine. Treasury Department-issued War Bonds poster, featuring an illustration of a Russian peasant woman weeping in front of the smoking rubble of her home directly beneath the slogan "...and WE talk about sacrifice." Meant to provide a measure of perspective to Americans on the homefront who, in the face of rationing and wartime restrictions, were being asked by their government to invest in War Bonds. The message is quite clear: during wartime, all must sacrifice, and some sacrifice more than others. Designed by Canadian artist Roger Couillard, best known for his numerous travel posters and ads for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

HOOVER, Herbert
28 June 1943. A scarce one-page press release of @300 words, SIGNED both in type and holograph by Hoover at the conclusion, regarding the need to pass the Fulmer Bill and to create the position of Food Administrator in the Roosevelt administration. Hoover was appointed this very position by Woodrow Wilson at the end of World War I. During this time, Franklin Roosevelt said about him: "He is certainly a wonder, and I wish we could make him president of the United States." That wish did, of course, come true, and Hoover served during the worst economic depression in the nation's history. He was overwhelmingly defeated for reelection by the very man who wished he would become president. In part: "No responsible person has proposed a Food 'Czar,' nor an Angel Gabriel. What large sections of the country and the House Agricultural Committee have demanded is a Food Administrator, acting within laws passed by Congress and under the President. We need a manager, not a 'dictator.'" An interesting Hoover piece, probably limited to distribution to certain major newspapers, and quite unlikely that many have survived. This comes from the estate of an editor for a major New York newspaper. Folds from mailing. Near Fine, a remarkable and scarce piece [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Kopp, Werner
1943. 80 x 99 cm, 63 x 83 cm, Tadell. Links unten signiert. 010

Leslie Ragan
New York Central System, 1943. Condition: Fine (poster condition A-). 19-7/8 by 27-3/4 inches. Six-color off-set lithograph on cardstock (as issued). A terrific "Rosie the Riveter" image of a woman dressed in mannish clothes oiling a locomotive wheel with a mechanical pump. Like the classic "We Can Do It!" poster, this was issued by a private company looking for women workers. The history of this poster is not documented, but it is a very scarce image of a woman doing a man's work during the Second World War. Arguably, it's the grittiest such image. The other, better known, posters of women on the home front -- the "We Can Do It!" woman and the WOWs (Women Ordinance Workers) -- show women in work clothes, but not actually working. Your humble cataloguer thinks this is one of the very best posters from the Second World War. The artist, Leslie Ragan, made many posters for the New York Central System railroad. His Art Deco-influenced travel posters are classics in the genre. His best-known work routinely sells in the five-figure range. Those posters, while exceptional examples of design and advertising, are not landmarks of social history, like this poster. Scarce. No copies on OCLC or in the Library of Congress. The Henry Ford Museum records a copy. Fine (poster condition A-).

ZWEIG, Stefan.
Stockholm: Bermann-Fischer Verlag, 1943. Stockholm: Bermann-Fischer Verlag,, 1943. ["Chess".] Octavo. Original buckram-backed blue boards, gilt titles to spine. With the dust jacket. Small nicks to the head and fore-corners, faint mark to front panel, otherwise a fine copy. First European edition, first printing, scarce and in exceptional condition. Zweig's great chess novella (published in English as "Chess" or "The Royal Game") was first printed in Buenos Aires in 1942, but that edition is rare - the Stockholm edition is the first printed on the continent that Zweig had fled. One of the most popular writers in the world in the 1920s and 30s, Zweig fled Austria in 1934 facing the rise of fascism. He settled eventually in Petroplis, Brazil, until, despairing for the future of humanity, he and his wife took their lives in 1942 with an overdose of barbiturates. Schachnovelle, in which the chess-mad protagonist is found fleeing persecution in Europe on a cruise ship bound to South America, masterfully reflects these anxieties.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine / Dust Jacket Included. First edition, first printing of the author's fourth Philip Marlowe mystery. One of 6,000 copies. Publisher's pale green cloth, lettered in dark green; in the original pictorial black dust jacket designed by Norman Reeves, with an illustration to the front panel of a white house on a purple mountain with shadowy figures at the foot, lettered in pale pink. A beautiful copy, with just a hint of toning to the extremities, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some minor rubbing to the extremities, very faint toning to the spine, closed tears and creasing to the flap folds, some light soiling to the rear panel, otherwise fresh and clean, without the usual chipping. Overall, a very bright and attractive copy. Scarce with a dust jacket in such excellent condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Bruccoli A.4.1.a. Published on November 1, 1943, The Lady in the Lake takes Detective Philip Marlowe out of Los Angeles, his usual stomping grounds, to investigate the disappearance of a wealthy businessman's estranged wife Crystal. The investigation quickly becomes complicated when the man Crystal claimed to have run off with is also unaware of her whereabouts, and Chandler adds stolen identities, police corruption, and a shootout with American sentries to further twist the plot. As with many of his novels, Chandler based The Lady in the Lake's plot on various short stories he had previously written for literary magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly and Black Mask. Unlike Dashiel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guthrie, Woody
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1943. New York: E. P. Dutton. 1943. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Book condition is Very Good; with a Very Good dust jacket. Edge wear to jacket, including a few chips. Two scuffs to paper at jacket rear panel. Minor foxing. Crease to bottom corner of a few pages. Text is clean and unmarked, frontispiece. First Edition is stated, first issue jacket present. An inscription as vibrant and humble as would be expected of Guthrie; written upside down, one can picture the book being handed to Guthrie and him signing before rotating the book. Guthrie tells the recipient, Marshall, "I hope you find some real 'fight' in this book..." Inscription is dated to April 1943, a few weeks after the book's publication. It would be difficult to underestimate Guthrie's influence on American folk music and as well as American popular music. As academic arguments persist about the great American novel, Guthrie's musical work and this book itself are distinctly American in attitude, imagery and fortitude--perpetuating and exemplifying the great American narrative that electrifies the significance of individual perspective, while in Guthrie's case also espousing his great compassion for the vulnerable and oppressed. ; Signed and inscribed by the author, Woody Guthrie, on the front end page. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author .
