New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A signed copy of a significant work of science fiction. Published the previous year in three parts in Black Mask. Adapted for cinema three times, and also for Orson Welles' radio dramatisation (of War of the Worlds fame). An over-powered brain in a vat, not much more that needs to be added to that synopsis. A somewhat popular trope. The book itself is signed by the author to the title page without inscription [Bleiler, p180: Paranormal abilities and biological SF: Pringle, p91]. Jacket has a little bumping and wear to the spine tips, and some tape ghosting to the flaps and rear plate. Some more ghosting to jacket reverse. Spine tips bumped to the boards. Cover art by W. Deffaa [7826, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. (Paris) s.d. (1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 4 pages in-4, 4 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

1943. HAND CRAFTED FULL ORANGE MOROCCO LEATHER IN SLIPCASE. Paul Gauguin. Letters to Ambroise Vollard & André Fontainas. Grabhorn Press, 1943. With 10 reproduction woodcuts. Paul Gauguin's Letters to Ambroise Vollard (1867-1907) and Andre Fontainas, was edited by John Rewald and published in San Francisco by Robert and Edwin Grabhorn in 1943. Almost immediately after its inception in 1920, the Grabhorn Press became one of the most attractive and, ultimately, most enduring American presses of the post-war period. "Nave Nave Fenua--Delicious Earth," originally designed in 1894 in Brittany, was printed in four colors by L. Roy and measures about 16 inches by 8 inches. It is one of ten printed after designs by Gauguin, whose use of contoured shapes in flat had exerted a noticeable influence upon modern painters and print-makers, William Nicholson, Claude Lovat Fraser, Vuillard and Bonnard, to name but a few. Letters was printed on French hand-made paper, the woodcuts on a variety of Chinese silk papers, and the book was published in an edition of 250 copies signed by Ed Grabhorn. This particular copy has been artfully bound in orange morocco with hand decorated title cover and spine by The Cuneo Press of Chicago in the late 1940's. It is contained in a hand made slipcase which exhibits some moisture damage which has not transferred to the book .There is a slight stain on the back morocco (see 2nd photo). The slipcase remains solid and intact. The book measures 11 inches by 15 1/2 inches and has 69 pages plus several endpapers. Shipping weight, well packed, is 3 1/2 lbs. Smith, Betty
Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, 1943. First edition of Smith's classic first novel. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles and ruling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. "Forty years before Holden Caulfield abandoned Pencey Prep to begin his ill-fated Manhattan odyssey, Francie Nolan struggled to obtain an education in the teeming tenement neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Francie grows up nurtured by the loving gallantries of her father, a singing waiter who drinks too much, and the rigorous austerities practiced by her brave mother, a janitress who reads to her children each night from the complete plays of Shakespeare and the 'Protestant Bible'. The book was an instant best-seller, with 300,000 copies purchased in the first six weeks. Writing in the Yale review, Orville Prescott praised A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as a 'rich and rare example of regional local color writing, filled to the scuppers with Brooklynese, Brooklyn folk-ways and Brooklyn atmosphere" (New York Public Library Books of the Century, 207). It was the basis for the 1945 film directed by Elia Kazan, starring James Dunn, Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, and Peggy Ann Garner, who won a Special Academy Award for Outstanding Child Actress of 1945. James Dunn won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The notebook covers the creation of the "Order" and how they created entertainment for themselves against the constant backdrop of the war, bombing raids, and their work. Opening on 7 April 1942 at Easter, the six head out for their first picnic of the year on Easter Monday: "we viewed with horror the devastation caused by the bombs on Sturry and were glad to take ourselves up into the woods". Rose, a teacher, is based in Stafford for most of the year, where she finds life very dull an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1943), 13,5x21,5cm & 3 1/2 pages in-4, 4 1/2 pages in-8. [Click Below for Full Description]
