        A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

New York: Harper & Brothers, [1943]. 8vo. Original green cloth, printed paper title label on spine; original pictorial dust jacket. A fine association copy, inscribed by Smith to her niece on the front free endpaper: "For my favorite niece Marylynn Hall Best love (Aunt) Betty Smith October, 1943." Signed copies of Smith's classic tale of life in Williamsburg, Brooklyn are scarce, and inscribed copies scarcer still. The present copy, inscribed to a close family member just two months after publication, was preserved and passed down through Smith's niece's family. In 1945 Elia Kazan made his directorial debut in the film adaptation of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Following the trials of a tenement family living in Brooklyn during the turn of the century, Smith's novel would also serve as the basis for a Broadway musical. According to auction records, no inscribed copies of the first edition have been offered since publication. Light spotting to cloth; jacket with chips and losses at edges affecting several letters of publisher's name on front cover and spine, $2.75 price preserved, generally an above-average copy of this work known for the fragility of its poor war-time paper.

        The Atlantic Charter.

Washington, DC: Office of War Information, , 1943. The President of the United States of America and the Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill, representing His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, being met together, deem it right to make known certain common principles in the national policies of their respective countries on which they base their hopes for a better future for the world. Folio broadside (712 x 507 mm): OWI Poster No. 50. Creased where folded, one panel on verso toned and with a few ink splashes. In excellent condition. An attractive copy of the decidedly uncommon Atlantic Charter poster issued by the US Office of War Information: no copy located by Copac in any British or Irish institutional library; OCLC cites copies at McGill, Penn State, New York Public Library, Wooster, Denison, West Texas A&M only. "The Atlantic Charter was a joint declaration released by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on August 14, 1941 following a meeting of the two heads of state in Newfoundland. The Atlantic Charter provided a broad statement of US and British war aims... Churchill and Roosevelt met on August 9 and 10, 1941 aboard the USS Augusta in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, to discuss their respective war aims for the Second World War and to outline a postwar international system. The Charter they drafted included eight 'common principles' that the United States and Great Britain would be committed to supporting in the postwar world. Both countries agreed not to seek territorial expansion; to seek the liberalization of international trade; to establish freedom of the seas, and international labor, economic, and welfare standards. Most importantly, both the United States and Great Britain were committed to supporting the restoration of self-governments for all countries that had been occupied during the war and allowing all peoples to choose their own form of government... While the Atlantic Charter of August 1941 was not a binding treaty, it was, nonetheless, significant for several reasons. First, it publicly affirmed the sense of solidarity between the U.S. and Great Britain against Axis aggression. Second, it laid out President Roosevelt's Wilsonian-vision for the postwar world; one that would be characterized by freer exchanges of trade, self-determination, disarmament, and collective security. Finally, the Charter ultimately did serve as an inspiration for colonial subjects throughout the Third World, from Algeria to Vietnam, as they fought for independence" (US Office of the Historian online). This handsomely printed poster, designed by the distinguished typographer W. A. Dwiggins, has echoes of eighteenth century proclamations - from the choice of typeface to the distinctive bracketing of the names of Roosevelt and Churchill - lending the piece a gravitas and a sense of "the weight of history".

The Little Prince (Signed Ltd )

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First edition. Near Fine/Good +. One of 525 copies of the signed first edition, this copy number 329, as numbered on the colophon and the jacket spine. Book Near Fine with clean, bright cloth and internal contents in excellent condition. Old newspaper clipping ghost to the front end papers and closed page block with very slight insect damage. The dust jacket is original to the book as per the matching spine number, but has been price-clipped and has seen better days. Several cracks and tears professionally closed on the verso with archival tissue, tape ghosts along the edges, some insect damage. Priced accordingly. "The Little Prince" is the best-selling French language book of all time, beloved around the world. It tells the story of a pilot, stranded in the Sahara, who encounters the Little Prince, visiting our world for a brief time before returning to his home planet. Unlike so many children's books with one simple message, "The Little Prince" offers several profound insights for readers of all ages. "Antoine de Saint-Exupery, most metaphysical of aviators... has written a fairy tale for grownups. The symbolism is delicate and tenuous. It challenges man the adult, and deplores the loss of the child in man." (Contemporary review in "Time" magazine). Near Fine in Good + dust jacket.

      M. Fabiani / Paris 1943 - Signierter Linolschnitt von H. Matisse als Front., Tit., 2 Bll., 39 S. Mit 3 Orig.-Lithographien im Text und 158 Tafeln. Lose Bogen in Chemise, Ohlwd. -Mappe.

Octavo, pp. [1-10] 11-425 [426: blank] [427: colophon] [428: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank], original cream wrappers printed in black and green, all edges untrimmed. First edition. Canedo worked more successfully in the science fiction genre than most other Mexican writers, according to Juan Carlos Ramírez-Pimienta on his website. He was a prolific and popular author, continuing to turn out novels up into the 1970s, but is now forgotten by most Latin American critics and historians, not to mention scholars elsewhere. He wrote three SF novels: EL REFERI CUENTA NUEVE, PALAMAS ECHEVETE Y YO EL LAGO ASFALTADO, and LA NOCHE ANUNCIA EL DIA, published, respectively, in 1943, 1945 and 1947. LA NOCHE deals with a mind-reading machine. PALAMAS concerns time travel. EL REFERI (the present work) uses the motif of the parallel universe to address political issues. It is a long work, blending two tales, told from different times and different worlds, featuring a 1961 invasion of the United States by the Nazis, who have formed an alliance with Mexico. Canedo wrote the work as a cautionary tale to urge his fellow Mexicans to join with Americans to fight Germany. "The United States has very few champions among the writers of Latin America; this is especially true in the case of Mexico. A notable exception is Diego Cañedo ... who, although perhaps better known for his light entertaining fantasies, has written ambitious works of social importance. During the Second World War, Cañedo was dismayed by the general acceptance in Mexico of Nazi propaganda. In order to influence public opinion against Hitler and in support of the United States, he wrote an impressive futuristic novel which he entitled EL REFERI CUENTA NUEV (1943)." - Ross Larson, Fantasy and Imagination in the Mexican Narrative. Some foxing and soiling to covers, internally fine. (#111168)

The Golden Carpet; The Silver Crescent. Published by Permission of the War Office.

London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1943 - 2 volumes, quarto. Full green and full blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, titles gilt to spines, gilt edge-roll, single fillet gilt to the turn-ins, top edges gilt, the others uncut. Each in the white linen slipcase as issued. Spine sunned as usual, narrow strip of tan-burn from the turn-ins to the free endpapers, slightly later gift inscriptions to both, but overall very good. Photogravure portrait frontispiece to each and numerous similar illustrations to the text of the second, the majority full-page, maps to the endpapers. First editions, each in a signed edition limited of 300 copies of which just 30 were in the full binding as here, copies 16 and 25 respectively. De Chair was Intelligence Officer with "Kingcol", a Flying Column of less than 1,500 men under the Command of Brig.-Gen. Kingstone. This tiny force was sent from Palestine to Baghdad to deal with the effects of the "Golden Square" coup amongst pro-Nazi Iraqi military officers. Despite the air support extended to the Iraqis by the German and Italian air forces, the operation was a complete success, Baghdad falling on 30 May 1941; the books cover this and subsequent operations in Syria. The books were reviewed in the Spectator on the issue of the composite trade edition in 1944 as "a fascinating and well-told story in the tradition of T. E. Lawrence, and one worthy to take its place in the history of British soldiers' heroic campaigns in the Near East". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        ANTI-ALLIES, ANTI-PARTISAN PROPAGANDA: Englands Kriegsschuld [Engliand’s Fault].

Kranj, Slovenia: NS Gauverlag und Druckerei Kärnten GmbH [] 1943 - 8°, 40 pp. in German and Slovene, original wrappers with illustrated cover, stapled (Very Good). A rare anti-Allied propaganda pamphlet in German and Slovene, printed in Kranj, Slovenia, during WWII, by the Nazis. The cover shows Churchill as the initiator of the war fire and the bilingual content tries to point a finger to England, as the starter of the WWII. The pamphlet is very rare. We could only trace one example in the institutions worldwide (Berlin State Library). A booklet with a same title was also published in Maribor, Slovenia, at the time occupied by Germany.

Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften. Roman. (Band 1 - 2. Dritter Band aus den Nachlass herausgegeben von Martha Musil.).

Berlin - Lausanne, Rowohlt Vlg. - Imprimerie Centrale, 1930 - 1943. - 3 Bde. 1074 + 2, 605 + 3, 462 S. OLwd. EA. WG II 10. Ebd. v. E.R. Weiss. Mit drei Tafeln. - Ebd. tlw. berieben u. stockfleckig, Bd. 2. auch etw. fleckig; innen gut, leichte Gbrsp. Besitzsign. a. V. (Bd. 2 u. 3).

        FU^DO

1943. Very Good. KITASONO Katue, poet. FUDO. Shoshinsha, Showa 18 [1943]. 8vo, 20.4 x 14.0 cm. One of 1500 copies. An example of Kitasono's "plastic poetry". The dustwrapper, cover, the typography, all combine as a fluid visual container for Kitasono's brilliant poems. There is not space here to even begin to describe Kitasono's importance to world art and literature. I would refer you to the several works of John Solt, both translations and critical essays, as well as several exhibitions dedicated to Kitasono mounted here and in Europe, as well. Very good condition, complete as issued.
