The command to look by Mortensen, William

Camera Craft, 1943-01-01. Third Printing. Very Good/Spiral-Bound Illustrated Wraps. Spiral-bound Softcover-1943 Third Printing Camera Craft Publishing 190 pages. Very Good in spiral bound illustrated wraps. Minor shelf/edge wear to covers-one small closed tear to front cover and one to the rear cover. No other notes or writing-All pages are bright, clean and crisp. If you're a professional photographer, you either already have this on your shelf, or are looking to put it there. That goes double if you are interested in the occult. A classic in understanding how to make a picture effective, commanding in presence and necessary to look at. Images from this book have influenced the occult founder of the Church of Satan, Anton Szandor LaVey. Lavey acknowledged his debt to Mortensen on various occasions, most prominently in the first edition of The Satanic Bible. This featured a dedication page containing nineteen names, together with a short descriptive phrase for each (the list does not appear in later editions). occultists, scientists, thinkers, artist, explorers and entertainers are included - some of them are famous, but others are obscure. The eighth name certainly falls into the latter category: " William Mortensen, who looked...and saw " . Blanche Barton, LaVeys partner, confidante and biographer relates in her biography of LaVey, The Secret Life of a Satanist, in the chapter, Angles of Madness, writes that the future Black pope discovered Mortensen's The Command to Look as a teenager in the 1940s. He recognized its importance at once. Here was a manual of magical theory that was itself occult, in the sense of being hidden in plain sight, concealed between the covers of a seemingly innocuous handbook for amateur photographers. In the years that followed his discovery, Lavey picked up every Mortensen book he could get his hands on, and also visited exhibitions of Mortensen's work. Scarce in any original printing.LOC-SSS-34

The Atlantic Charter. The President of the United States of America and the Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill, representing His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, being met together, deem it right to make known certain common principles in the national policies of their respective countries on which they base their hopes for a better future for the world.

Washington, DC: Office of War Information, 1943 - Folio broadside (712 x 507 mm): OWI Poster No. 50. Creased where folded, one panel on verso toned and with a few ink splashes. In excellent condition. An attractive copy of the decidedly uncommon Atlantic Charter poster issued by the US Office of War Information: no copy located by Copac in any British or Irish institutional library; OCLC cites copies at McGill, Penn State, New York Public Library, Wooster, Denison, West Texas A&M only. "The Atlantic Charter was a joint declaration released by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on August 14, 1941 following a meeting of the two heads of state in Newfoundland. The Atlantic Charter provided a broad statement of US and British war aims. Churchill and Roosevelt met on August 9 and 10, 1941 aboard the USS Augusta in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, to discuss their respective war aims for the Second World War and to outline a postwar international system. The Charter they drafted included eight 'common principles' that the United States and Great Britain would be committed to supporting in the postwar world. Both countries agreed not to seek territorial expansion; to seek the liberalization of international trade; to establish freedom of the seas, and international labor, economic, and welfare standards. Most importantly, both the United States and Great Britain were committed to supporting the restoration of self-governments for all countries that had been occupied during the war and allowing all peoples to choose their own form of government. While the Atlantic Charter of August 1941 was not a binding treaty, it was, nonetheless, significant for several reasons. First, it publicly affirmed the sense of solidarity between the U.S. and Great Britain against Axis aggression. Second, it laid out President Roosevelt's Wilsonian-vision for the postwar world; one that would be characterized by freer exchanges of trade, self-determination, disarmament, and collective security. Finally, the Charter ultimately did serve as an inspiration for colonial subjects throughout the Third World, from Algeria to Vietnam, as they fought for independence" (US Office of the Historian online). This handsomely printed poster, designed by the distinguished typographer W. A. Dwiggins, has echoes of eighteenth century proclamations - from the choice of typeface to the distinctive bracketing of the names of Roosevelt and Churchill - lending the piece a gravitas and a sense of "the weight of history".

Photo Album): A Photo Album of an Ohio Family's Life through Two Generations, 1918 to 1943

Canton, Ohio / Chicago 1943 - Oblong quarto measuring 11" x 7". String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 295 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 2.5" and 4.5" x 4" with some captions. Cover and first page detached but present, small chips and tears thus good with fine photographs. A collection of photographs from Canton, Ohio in 1918 through 1943 showing a young woman's family and friends when she is a young girl and following her life until she has children of her own. There are two magazine cut outs showing the "Members of the Ohio State Dental Laboratory Guild and Their Ladies," in which the woman is seen with her husband F. C. Hoffman. The first few photos are of the woman's family standing solemnly together with very few smiles; however, the vast majority of the photos are of the woman and her friends having adventures together. Some of the photos are of the young people at a lake, swimming at the beach, camping in the woods, and visiting different cities and locations some of which include Chicago and Geneva, Ohio. Later photos show the group of friends getting older, having kids, and then their kids becoming adults in a 25 year time span. The woman's son at 18, is pictured wearing a World War II Army uniform in some of the last photos of the album. This extensive multiple era piece shows three decades of fashion, automobiles, and general tom-foolery that young people of the time got into in Ohio. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Gang's All Here [The Girls He Left Behind] (Original screenplay for the 1943 film)

Twentieth Century-Fox, Los Angeles 1943 - Revised Final Script for the 1943 film musical, here under its working title, "The Girls He Left Behind." Directed by Busby Berekeley, written for the screen by Walter Bullock, Tom Bridges, George Root, Jr., and Nancy Wintner (with only Bullock credited here), and starring Alice Faye, Carmen Miranda, and featuring Benny Goodman and his orchestra. Considered by many to be Berkeley's masterpiece (though there are several high spots to choose from), "The Gang's All Here" is indisputably the master film choreographer's wildest and most ambitious effort, with staging and camerawork that are still somewhat unexplainable today, and shot in blazing Technicolor to boot. The film also boasts Carmen Miranda's finest hour, the sparkling "Girl in the Tutti-Frutti Hat." Red titled wrappers, stamped REVISED FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped project No. 870 and copy No. 53, dated April 19, 1943, and with the holograph file notation "Env. 1474" at the top right corner, and the correct final title, "The Gang's All Here" in the same hand just above the printed working title. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, with a credit for screenwriter Bullock. 115 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 4/26/43 and 6/2/43, Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.         Original cartoon illustration, "The Colossus Leans," ca 1943

, [ca 1943]. [ca 1943]. A large and accomplished caricature in which a panicked Hitler attempts to prop up a collapsing statue of Mussolini; probably drawn following the Allied invasion of Sicily in July, 1943. Groth was at this time Art Director for Parade Publications, for which this cartoon was likely illustrated (though we are unsure whether it was ever published). Though best remembered as a wartime sketch-artist and book illustrator, Groth began his career as a printmaker and cartoonist very much in the social-realist mold, publishing some of his earliest work in such left-wing forums as The New Masses and PM. He was also the first Art Director at Esquire, which was founded in 1933. Groth's mastery as a printmaker is on display in these early works, which manage to convey a simultaneous sense of urgency and delicacy which would become the hallmark of his battlefield sketches made during WW2 and the Korean War. Original cartoon illustration in black ink on watercolor paper; sheet size 63cm x 50cm (ca 24-13/4" x 19-3/4"). Signed in ink lower right. Drawing spotted and lightly soiled; glue remnants to margin, apparently from a removed mat; title in pencil below image; Very Good.

        The Little Prince

New York: Reynal and Hitchcock, 1943. Signed limited first edition. One of 525 signed numbered copies, this is number 110. Signed by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. Small quarto, original salmon cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a chip to the front panel restored. Housed in a custom three quarters morocco clamshell box. The Little Prince has something of Hans Christian Andersen in it, something of Lewis Carroll, and even, it may perhaps be said, a bit of John Bunyan. It is often lyrical sometimes profound However it is classified, The Little Prince has entered children's literature, in the manner of quite a few other such hard-to-define works in the preceding centuries" (Pierpont Morgan Library). A year after the book's publication in 1943, Saint-Exupery disappeared over the Mediterranean while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron, making this signed limited very desirable.

Signed by the entire cast on the night of the London premiere, on the front endpapers and preliminary blanks. Signatures include those by each member of the premiere cast, including Mary Marlo, Harold Keel, Betty Jane Watson, Henry Clarke, Dorothea MacFarland, and Marek Windheim; as well as signatures by each singer and dancer, and the production director Jerome Whyte and the orchestra director Salvatore Dell'Isola. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Rare and desirable. Oklahoma! is the first musical written by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is based on Lynn Riggs' 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. A secondary romance concerns cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancee, Ado Annie. The original Broadway production opened on March 31, 1943. It was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. It has long been a popular choice for school and community productions. Rodgers and Hammerstein won a special Pulitzer Prize for Oklahoma! in 1944.

        Den fuldkomne fisker.

1943 1943 - The Compleat Angler or The Contemplative Man's Recreation. Oversat ved Johanne Kastor Hansen, digtene oversat af Otto Gelsted. 1. danske oversættelse. Kbhvn.: Martin 1943.

New York, JWB. N.D.. Paperback. 1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers, 4to (magazine size) 24 unnumbered pages. Printed on glossy paper and loaded with black and white photos of Jewish servicemen at different social events. 28 cm. WWII-era photo-publication promoting the social events and services provided by the JWB for Jewish servicemen. Photos of Jewish GIs at USOs, getting info, at libraries, signing in choruses, playing cards, playing ping pong, playing pool, eating meals, working on puzzles, with celebrities, taking dancing lessons, listening to “professional entertainers” square dancing, conga dancing, getting their portraits painted, participating in religious services, receiving books and magazines, receiving victory kits, watching movies, playing guitar, etc. Audience for this publication was certainly Jewish GI's, as nearly every photo shows both GIs and attractive young women! Includes printed letter introducing the publication, from chairman Ralph E. Saumel, laid in, dated March 25, 1943, which had been stapled to front cover (staple still in corner of cover)—this letter is apparently lacking from the single copy on OCLC, as they have a wild guess at the date of 1939-1945. SUBJECT(S): Jews -- New York (State) -- New York -- Societies, etc. Jewish soldiers. World War, 1939-1945 -- Participation, Jewish. OCLC/Worldcat lists only 1 copy worldwide (Balch), which, apparently, lacks the laid in letter. Light wear, a beautiful copy of a gorgeous illustrated period piece. (kh-3-2) .

Book is signed, inscribed and dated by Ayn Rand directly to the title page. To __ __, - Cordially - Ayn Rand October 17, 1944. Binding and hinges are strong. Endpapers are clean. FFEP includes a previous owner's name that matches the name in Ayn Rand's inscription on the title page. Green cloth panels are clean. Upper right corner of front panel shows cloud-like stains. This is limited strictly to this area not affecting page edges or pastedown. If this is bothersome, it is an easy fix with a restorer as this area (or the whole cover) can be matched and re-dyed. 1 corner is gently bumped. 2 corner tips show a tiny amount of fray hairs at tips. Cloth is rubbed at upper left corner. Foot of backstrip shows shelf-rubbing. Gilt titles slightly rubbed on front panel and mostly rubbed on backstrip. DJ shows multiple flaws and is in poor condition serving only as a temporary placeholder. This DJ is from an earlier printing. DJ is flawed with open chips, some tape reinforcement and splitting along seams that are held together by DJ protector. Original $3.00 price is in place on front flap. Signed copies of Rand's masterpiece are few and far between. A unique offering of the classic that is signed, dated and inscribed by Ayn Rand directly to the title page.         The Little Prince

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Book very Nearly Fine with clean, bright cloth and internal contents in excellent condition. Very slight mottling to the cloth otherwise a Fine copy. The dust jacket is Near Fine with two short tears and a small wrinkle at the base of the spine and a faint offset on the front panel, otherwise an excellent example. "The Little Prince" is the best-selling French language book of all time, beloved around the world. It tells the story of a pilot, stranded in the Sahara, who encounters the Little Prince, visiting our world for a brief time before returning to his home planet. Unlike so many children's books with one simple message, "The Little Prince" offers several profound insights for readers of all ages. "Antoine de Saint-Exupery, most metaphysical of aviators... has written a fairy tale for grownups. The symbolism is delicate and tenuous. It challenges man the adult, and deplores the loss of the child in man." (Contemporary review in "Time" magazine). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

, 1943. 1943. Good. OZAKI Kohachi, author. ONCHI Ko^shiro. KOMAKUSA. To^kyo^,Sho^wa 18 [1943]. Single sheet, 29.2 x 34.3 cm. Meant to fold in fourths as a simple species of "book" during the wartime shortage of paper. The lightly colored woodblock print by Onchi is some 11.0 x 15.4 cm. It was cut and printed by members of the Hanga Kurabu. Ozaki [1892-1974] had known Onchi for many years when he collaborated with him on this little illustrated poem, named after a species of mountain flower common to Japan. Extremely ephemeral. I can find no reference to it in either the English language or Japanese sources, nor does it appear in the Onchi print raisonne. It has, of course, been folded and then flattened again. Overall good condition, a good impression of the print.

(Manhattan Project) LA Report 24. Lecture Series on Nuclear Physics.

A rare pre-publication copy of the Manhattan Project Lecture Series on Nuclear Physics. The text comprises forty-one talks on nuclear physics given by the project's leaders between September 14, 1943 and March 12, 1944. Like everything produced at Los Alamos, these lectures were highly classified. Only a small number of copies were mimeographed for the use of high-level employees, and it is likely that many of them were destroyed for security reasons before the content was declassified in October 1945. The texts were first officially published by the US Government Printing Office in 1947. Only three other copies of the mimeographed edition have appeared at auction, and a global library catalogue search through WorldCat locates eight in institutions. Given the secrecy and scarcity of pre-publication copies, this copy must have originally belonged to a Project employee. It bears the ownership inscription and manuscript notes of Princeton student John "Jack" Howard Irving, so the original owner was almost certainly either Walter Kauzmann or Eugene Wigner, both of whom worked on the Manhattan Project and taught Irving at Princeton after the War. Jack Irving earned his undergraduate degree at Caltech in 1942. He worked at MIT's Rad Lab during the war and completed his MA in Physics at Princeton between 1946 and 1948. He then accepted a fellowship to study statistical mechanics at Caltech, after which he became Head of Systems Planning and Analysis at Hughes Aircraft, where his group developed the first airborne digital computer for fighter aircraft. In 1954 he joined the Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation where he worked on synchronous orbit satellites, and in 1960 he was hired by the not-for-profit Aerospace Corporation as head of the Systems Research and Planning Division. Irving returned to Princeton to complete his PhD between 1963 and 1965. (Los Angeles Times obituary, November 16, 2008.) The Princeton Mudd Manuscript Library has confirmed the dates Irving was a student at the school and informed us that that a number of his classes and most of his dissertation and research work was done with Eugene Wigner. The title of his dissertation was Wigner Distribution Functions in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics, and Walter Kauzmann served as one of the principal examiners. While it is possible this was Wigner's copy, Kauzmann returned to Princeton from the Manhattan Project in 1946, about a year before Wigner, and the ownership inscription on the cover is dated 1946. It therefore seems likely that Kauzmann gave or loaned this copy to Irving during the first year of his MA.  There are manuscript annotations in pen and ink throughout the text, and while most of the ink (and a few other pencil) annotations appear to be Irving's, there are a number of pencil notations in an unidentified hand. They are not Wigner's, and while it is possible they could be Kauzmann's, we have been unable to verify one way or the other. The lectures printed here include an introductory series on terminology and basic nuclear physics by E. M. McMillan; a series on radioactivity, including radioactive decay, particle interactions, and the properties of nuclei, by Emilio Segrè, Edward Teller, and Felix Bloch; six lectures on neutron physics by J. H. Williams; four lectures on the two-body problem and proton/neutron interactions by C. L. Critchfield; a series on the statistical theory of nuclear reactions by Victor Weisskopf; a series on diffusion theory, including the damping of neutrons, by Robert F. Christy. [Los Alamos, NM: Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, 1943-44.] Perfect bound in contemporary brown Accopress card binder, 329 mimeographed leaves printed on the rectos only. Hand-written title and ownership stickers to the upper cover. Contemporary or near-contemporary pencil and ink annotations to the text. A little rubbing and some spots to the binder, lower corner of binder torn, contents faintly toned. Excellent condition.

Poster: "...and WE talk about sacrifice - Buy War Bonds."

[Washington DC]: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1943. Treasury Department-issued War Bonds poster, featuring an illustration of a Russian peasant woman weeping in front of the smoking rubble of her home directly beneath the slogan "...and WE talk about sacrifice." Meant to provide a measure of perspective to Americans on the homefront who, in the face of rationing and wartime restrictions, were being asked by their government to invest in War Bonds. The message is quite clear: during wartime, all must sacrifice, and some sacrifice more than others. Designed by Canadian artist Roger Couillard, best known for his numerous travel posters and ads for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Original illustrated poster, lithographed in colors and measuring 51.5cm x 71cm (20.25" x 28"). Professionally linen-backed, with old fold lines faintly visible; some expert, pinpoint retouching to a few spots along lower edge, else Fine.

Mon bouquin a obtenu l’autorisation tant désirée.
