THE GASTRONOMICAL ME. Inscribed to her sister

New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1943, 1943 Fisher, M.F.K. THE GASTRONOMICAL ME. Inscribed to her sister. New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1943 . First Edition, Publisher's unknown variant of apricot cloth covered boards stamped in silver at the spine. Not the smooth green cloth normally encountered & likely one of the earliest author's copies. 8vo., 295pp, with the more uncommon first issue dustwrapper with the more provocative reclining pose shot by Hurrell. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper showing moderate use including two chips at the spine crown. Inscribed by Fisher to her sister in black fountain pen on the ffe: "For Aimee, with my love always / Mary". A superb family copy of this much admired tightly woven memoir & collection of cooking essays written over a twenty year period that have more to do with the entanglements of life & the appreciation of good things. Considered by many as her best book, TGM is about hunger in all its variant forms. "When I write about hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth, and the love of it - and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied. " Her lovely description of one of her meals speaks volumes about her craft: "There in Dijon, the cauliflowers were very small and succulent, grown in that ancient soil. I separated the flowerlets and dropped them in boiling water for just a few minutes. Then I drained them and put them in a wide shallow casserole, and covered them with heavy cream, and a thick sprinkling of freshly grated Gruyere, the nice rubbery kind that didn’t come from Switzerland at all, but from the Jura. It was called rape in the market, and was grated while you watched, in a soft cloudy pile, onto your piece of paper". An excellent copy. "M. F. K. Fisher ... brings onstage a peach or a brace of quail and shows us history, cities, fantasies, memories, emotions." - Patricia Storace, The New York Review of Books.. Signed by Author. First Edition.

        Churchill on Ulster

Belfast: The Socialist Party, 34 Berry Street, 1943. Paperback. Very good. This extremely scarce wartime pamphlet reproduces Churchill's speech of 14 March 1914 at St. George's Hall, Bradford, when Churchill spoke on behalf of the British Government at the height of Home Rule crisis of 1912-1914. Churchill's family had supported unyielding British control over Ireland. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, won political victories through his support of the Unionists in Ulster. Over time, Winston came to support Home Rule. In early 1912, Winston spoke in Belfast in favor of Home Rule - the same Belfast where his father, Lord Randolph, famously opposed Home Rule, declaring in 1886 "Ulster will fight and Ulster will be right." Winston's 1912 reply: "Why cannot this great settlement be made? We have made friends with our enemies; can we not make friends with our comrades too?" This was a major and controversial event, involving extraordinary precautions to protect Churchill's physical safety from hostile crowds. The Home Rule crisis persisted into 1914. The crisis was of sufficient concern that on 13 March 1914 - the day before Churchill's speech - Prime Minister Asquith informed the King in some detail about the "military situation in Ulster" (then being investigated by a Cabinet committee of which Churchill was a member). Churchill was chosen to deliver a stern message to Ulster about the necessity for compromise and the consequences of rejecting it. Per Churchill bibliographer Martin Gilbert (Volume II, page 488), "The firm and measured tones in which Churchill spoke at Bradford had been approved in advance by Asquith" but the words were distinctly Churchillian, as was the eloquent and resolved gravity. The Home Rule crisis of 1912-1914 was sidelined by World War I. Nonetheless, Churchill would ultimately introduce the Irish Free State Bill, which won passage in 1922. In 1943, during Churchill's wartime premiership, the Socialist Party saw fit to reproduce Churchill's 14 March 1914 speech. They republished "this prophetic speech of Mr. Churchill's as an answer to those who would have us believe that the British Government have no responsibility for the near-fascist state created by British Imperial Interests in Ireland." The pamphlet is bound in illustrated paper wraps, wire-stitched, 16 pages in length, and measures 7.25 x 5 inches. Churchill's speech fills pages 5-15. Condition of the pamphlet is very good given age and fragility. The covers remain complete and attached with no losses. The two original bindings staples remain firmly attached, with only minor corrosion. The covers are lightly soiled and bear a horizontal crease, where the pamphlet was once folded. The contents are clean and complete with no markings. This address was subsequently collected in Churchill's Complete Speeches, Volume III, at pp.2222-33, under the title "The Ulster Situation".         Jean Clerc sculpteur 1908-1933 *

"The War Situation", A Speech before the Parliament of England on 11th November 1942 By The Right Honourable Winston S. Churchill

Kingsport, Tennessee: Kingsport Press, 1943. 1st Edition. Paperback. Fine. First edition, only printing. This extremely scarce wartime speech pamphlet was a limited edition of only 400 copies. Collectors take note: according to Churchill bibliographer Ronald Cohen, as early as 1953 noted Churchill collectors were already looking for copies and unable to find them. The pamphlet publishes Churchill's 11 November 1942 speech to Parliament discussing the War Situation, including the Battle of Egypt. This speech was subsequently included in The End of the Beginning under the title "The War Situation". The binding for this pamphlet is quite attractive, featuring pale blue-gray card wraps bound with cord and bearing a white title label on the front cover. This copy is in remarkable, nearly pristine, extraordinarily fine condition. The covers are clean and bright with virtually no wear. They would be flawless but for the slightest, barely visible hint of soiling to the right of the title block on the front cover. The contents are immaculate - crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. This is truly as good as will be found. Protected in a removable archival mylar sleeve.         Spanish Speaking Americans in the War

[Washington, D.C.: Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, 1943]. First Edition. Olson's first book, a tribute to the Spanish-speaking Americans involved in the war effort, both overseas and on the home front. The 24 page pamphlet was written in collaboration with Ben Shahn, roughly a year after Olson began working for him at the Foreign Language Division of the Office of War Information (OWI). The text borders on being inspirational, coupled with powerful images of soldiers, farmers, families, machinists, and doctors whose lives had been caught up in the war. While none of the images are credited, several would likely have been taken and contributed by Shahn, who had worked as a staff photographer for the Farm Security Administration before taking over as Creative Director for OWI in 1940. A stopper for collectors of Olson's work, and quite rare; this is the only copy we have handled, and we are aware of only one other example in the trade in the past decade. Quarto (28cm); illustrated stapled wrappers; [24pp]; chiefly illus. Some marginalia (in pencil) on front wrapper, some of which is partially erased; light edgewear, a few tiny nicks, and a shallow 3" chip to left edge of rear wrapper; a Very Good, sound copy.

L'Entree En Lutte (Into Battle), inscribed and dated by Churchill to Charles Montag

London: Heinemann & Zsolnay, Ltd., 1943. First French language edition. Hardcover. Fine. This is the first French edition of the first volume of Churchill's war speeches, finely bound, inscribed and dated by Churchill to his longtime friend and painting companion Charles Montag (1880-1956). The inked inscription in four lines on the second blank endpaper reads: "To Charles Montag / from / Winston S. Churchill / 1946". Churchill met and befriended Charles Montag during the First World War. May 1915 saw Churchill scapegoated for the bloody failure in the Dardanelles and forced from the Admiralty. By November Churchill was serving at the Front, leading a battalion in the trenches. But during the summer of 1915, as he wrestled with depression and decisions, he rented Hoe Farm in Surrey, which he frequented with his wife and three children. There, one day in June, Churchill noticed his brother's wife sketching in watercolors and impulsively borrowed her brush. He swiftly found solace in painting, which would serve as a beloved source of release and renewal for the rest of his long life. Charles Montag shared and supported Churchill's passion. Montag was a Swiss painter and art dealer who met Churchill in 1915, soon after Churchill began painting. Montag became a lifelong friend and compagnon d'art for nearly four decades, painting with Churchill from the south of France to Lake Como to Marrakech. More than just a companion, Montag also served as a mentor, supporter, and technical advisor. In 1915, it was Montag who took Churchill "round the galleries of Paris" and introduced him to the work of the impressionists. In 1921, Montag arranged an exhibition of Churchill's paintings at the presitgious Galerie Druet in the rue Royale, shown under the pseudonym "Charles Morin". Letters from Churchill to his wife testify that, over the years, Montag would "comment & guide" Churchill's painting, an influence Churchill regarded positively: "he has a vast knowledge and one cannot paint in his presence without learning." In 1946 Montag helped arrange for Churchill to stay at Chateau Choisi on Lake Geneva to paint, work on his war memoirs, and prepare his famous speech of 19 September promoting a United Europe. Just a half a decade earlier, Churchill's soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world as Europe was violently torn apart. Now, in 1946, Churchill's words would help catalyze a peacefully united Europe, lending bold impetus to formation of what would eventually become the European Union. Radically in the wake of the Second World War, Churchill called for "a partnership between France and Germany" and for a Council of Europe, which would convene in The Hague in 1948 as a Congress of Europe with Churchill as Honorary President. Churchill was known, on occasion, to gift finely bound and inscribed copies of his books to significant friends who hosted him on his trips. Given the inscription date it seems highly probable that this finely bound volume in his friend's preferred language was such a gift. This gift to Montag bridges the war that called Churchill to leadership and lasting fame, the complex peace he was still laboring to secure, and a friendship and pastime that had sustained Churchill during momentous world events for more than three decades. Into Battle was the first of Churchill's war speeches volumes, published in England in 1941 with this French edition following in 1943. This volume is bound in dark red half morocco over marbled cloth boards. The binding features raised spine bands, gilt spine lettering, black rules bordering all spine bands and transitions, and gilt top edge. Condition is truly fine. The binding remains bright and clean with no fading or deterioration of the leather and virtually no wear. The contents are likewise superior. There are no previous ownership markings apart from the author's inscription. We note just a trace of spotting confined to the first and final leaves and the fore and bottom edges.
