She received the Regina Medal in 1971 for her contributions to children's literature. Tudor also illustrated for beloved children's novels, such as The Secret Garden and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The White Goose contributed to her reception of these awards.       The Theatre Guild 1943 - Typed document, entitled "Robeson's Contract": three-page contractual understanding to produce Shakespeare’s "Othello"; signed and annotated by both Robeson and Lawrence Langner, January 26, 1943 ----- During the summer of 1930, fifteen years after his first high school attempt at playing Othello, Robeson burst upon the English stage. While the historic but reserved performances brought international recognition, Robeson’s dream of starring in an American production was thwarted for more than a decade, stage director Margaret Webster conjectured in Our Time, “because an American audience would never come to see a black man play a love-scene with a white woman.” Nevertheless, the Phi Beta Kappa scholar persisted to study – telling a Daily Express reporter that the Shakespearean tragedy released “all sense of limitation, and all racial prejudice. In a word, Othello has made me free.” In the early 1940s, Robeson and Webster decided to test the waters together. A veteran cast was assembled (with the crucial roles of Desdemona and Iago assigned to Uta Hagen and Jose Ferrer; Webster herself played Emilia), and tryouts were scheduled in Cambridge and Princeton (Robeson’s birthplace). During August 1942, the racially mixed company gave laudatory performances at the Brattle and McCarter Theatres. Producers expressed interest. The Theatre Guild’s provident founder, Lawrence Langer, Robeson’s friend since the early 1920s, agreed to assume financial control of the show. Contracts were drawn up for Robeson, Webster (director), and Haggott (manager-technical advisor). Playwright Eugene O’Neill’s versatile colleague, Robert Edmund Jones, was recruited to design sets and costumes. Robeson’s contract, finalized on January 26, 1943, stipulated a weekly salary of $1500 (or ten percent of the weekly gross receipts, whichever was higher), with an added clause assuring no more than eight performances each week. According to the contractual arrangement, “all matters pertaining to artistic aspects of the production shall be under the control and supervision of Robeson, Webster, and Hagott, provided, however, that final selection of the cast and Robeson’s costumes shall be with Robeson.” (On one occasion, when the Guild insisted on replacing Ferrer and Hagen, Robeson brandished this contract and threatened to quit the production unless the husband-and-wife team stayed on. The Guild conceded.) “For the first time in the United States a Negro was playing one of the greatest parts ever written and the occasion was trying to prove something other than itself,” Webster recalled, when the play premiered at the Shubert Theatre on October 19, 1943. NAACP executive Walter White later told Langner that “the playing of a Moor by a Negro actor” (Robeson’s portrayal was “one of the most inspiring and perfectly balanced performances I have ever seen”), had raised the “hope that race prejudice is not as insurmountable an obstacle as it sometimes appears to be.” Before Othello ended its Broadway run in the summer of 1944, the 46-year-old tragedian had harvested a plethora of awards, including that of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The record-breaking 296 performances were the supreme moment of Robeson’s artistic career and, in Webster’s words, a “landmark of American social consciousness.” Decades after Othello riveted Broadway, poet Robert Hayden paid homage to Robeson: “Call him deluded, say that he was dupe and by half-truths betrayed. Staple holes at upper left. Outstanding content regarding Hoover&#39;s views on constructing a lasting peace after World War II. "I receive constant demand or expression of hope for the formulation of more adequate, more realistic and more definite bases of peace policies.... It has occurred to me that it might be of some service to develop some of the ground of common agreement, although it might not be a complete and final program. Some twelve months ago Mr. [Hugh] Gibson and I published a book [The Problems of Lasting Peace] advancing some new ideas upon the subject. Those ideas received extraordinary support from all sections of the press, Democratic as well as Republican.... We proposed wholly new approaches to the machinery for making lasting peace so as to avoid another debacle like Versailles. And we proposed new approaches to the long-view peace settlements. The problem covers so many and such complicated issues that they cannot be stated in a brief formula on a single sheet of paper.... ...I have had the book condensed... hoping that you would consent to read it and mark upon the margins those paragraphs to which you feel yourself in agreement.... I am writing you confidentially.... I am sending you an extra copy of the pamphlet for you to keep. I am sending this letter out initially only to a limited list to see what the feeling is." In the upper left corner of the first page Saxon has written, "Let me have your ideas directly -- But you might write the chief on some other excuse." Comes with Saxon&#39;s "extra copy" of the 37-page pamphlet, "New Approaches to Lasting Peace," in very good condition and bearing Saxon&#39;s pencilled notes. Also present is a photocopy of Saxon&#39;s reply, addressed to "Chief" and dated April 20, 1943. Accompanied by vintage 8" X 10" news agency photograph of Hoover. An important and fascinating look into Hoover&#39;s activities during the war.

        A STOVE-UP COWBOY&#39;S STORY

      Texas Folklore Society, 1943., 1943. First edition. Limited to 700 copies. Yellow dec. cloth, 73pp. Illustrated by Tom Lea. For 15 years Jim McCauley was a common cowhand. This is the unvarnished tale of this ordinary cowboy in the 1880s and 1890s. Six-Score says, "One of the most forceful and expressive autobiographies of the range country. McCauley lived hard." Contains some information about some of the outlaws in Texas and Arizona. Fine bright copy in flawless dust jacket. The book was designed by Carl Hertzog. J. Frank Dobie says he liked "the uncommon saltiness of speech."

      Cassell, 1943. Hardcover. Very Good. London: Cassell, 1943. First British Edition, First Printing. In Good+ condition, in a Good dust jacket. Clean text. Heavy foxing to the side edge of the page block, and sporadic foxing to the pages. Previous owner details in pen to front free end paper. Cloth shows rubbing and wear. Binding slightly worn. The dust jacket shows rubbing and edge wear, with tape repairs made from the verso that seem to have repaired some major splits along the folds. The dust jacket flaps show tape ghosts to the flaps that extend onto the paste downs. The dust jacket is a bit fragile, but presents well in Mylar.

The dust jacket has the proper price of $2.75 and the code of 5338 intact, however, it is the second issue dust jacket with text printed on the verso. In Very Good overall condition. Binding is lightly worn. Green cloth shows wear and sunning. Title label shows scratches. The dust jacket is fragile along the folds, with rubbing, edge wear, chipping, and a small tape repair made from the verso at the base of the spine. First edition, as stated.

        MOBY DICK

      [Brattleboro, VT]: Limited Editions Club, 1943. Hardcover. These volumes are in Near Fine condition, the leather still supple with solid coloring. The spines are just a touch faded with a small rubbed spot at the heel of each volume and very slight wear to the head of the first. The slipcase is present and also in Near Fine condition. Scarce as such. Boardman Robinson. Two quarto volumes (7-1/2" x 10") bound in full dark sheepskin with gilt lettering on the spines. Copy #330 of 1000 with color and black-and-white plates after paintings by Boardman Robinson and SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. One of the most difficult books of the press to obtain in decent condition because of the tendency of the leather to dry. When copies are seen, usually the binding is so dry it is crumbling. The limitation of 1000 copies is not stated, nor is the typical limitation of 1500 copies stated, but a letter from the publisher, George Macy, to this subscriber explains the limitation and is included here with book, as is the uncommon Monthly Letter.

      New York: Bobbs Merrill, 1943: First Edition, First Printing with statement of "First Edition" present on the copyright page (all other issue points are irrelevant). In second state green cloth binding, in a price clipped, second state dust jacket. In Very Good condition. Pages lightly toned. Cloth shows light rippling near edge of front board, light light edge wear. Corners bumped. The spine appears to be glued down at the top end, internally.The dust jacket is tattered and a bit worn, with a bit of waviness and repairs made from the verso, and some amateur color-correcting to the outside. A lovely copy in a worn jacket.

Cloth shows some wear, fading and soiling. The dust jacket shows wear at the spine ends and along the folds, as well as rubbing, soiling, but on a whole presents well.       Cleveland, The Rowfant Club, 1943, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover. No. 2 of 152 numbered copies, printed at the Grabhorn Press, black buckram spine with red and gray floral pattern boards, faint manuscript number "2" on dust jacket that matches the manuscript number "2" on the limitation page, Goldstone & Payne A20a, Morrow 169, this was the first copy (No. 2) available to the public as The Rowfant Club always retains copy No. 1 for itself, housed in a stunningly beautiful clamshell box. Near fine book in the notoriously fragile and cheap green paper/glassine jacket that retains more of its original green color than most copies, although it suffers from the usual fading to brown along the spine and extremities, a few short edge tears and a one-inch tear near the rear flap fold, despite all this, it is the best copy in jacket we have seen.
