Signiert. Datiert: 1943. Das Bild zeigt eine Vorgebirgslandschaft. Zweifarbiger, zum Bild passender (evtl. späterer) Rahmen. Guter Originalzustand. Zwei kleine Kratzer (unauffällig). I WAKE UP SCREAMING

Robert Hale, London 1943 - First Impression. Octavo; black textured cloth over flexible boards, with titles and revolver design stamped in red and silver on spine; 216pp. Slight lean, contemporary owners name on front endpaper, with light foxing to text edges; Very Good+. Dustjacket is unclipped, with a triangular chip at lower right corner of front panel (affecting neither titling or artwork), with a few small nicks and closed tears to the extremities, and six small tape mends verso; Very Good. An intriguing intersection of hard-boiled literature, the Hollywood novel, and film noir. The US edition of the book, Fisher's first novel, a key Hollywood novel as well as a high point of late hard-boild literature, was purchased by Twentieth Century-Fox prior to publication in 1941. The film was released the same year, and is today not only viewed as a foundational film noir, but also one of the first in which the cinematography and deeply damaged characters were utterly soaked in the noir ethic. The film was released in the UK in 1942 - about a year after the US release - under the title "Hot Spot," and this edition, issued in typically miniscule quantities of 500 or fewer by Robert Hale, advertises itself as the basis for that film. A seriously rare book, perhaps even more so that the US edition; indeed, we were unaware of the existence of the Hale imprint until this copy was located. [Attributes: First Edition]

S.V.B." The poem is printed on page 60 of this book. Sturcke, a lifetime friend of Patchen, was a painter and pacifist who exhibited in the 1930s and 1940s, and who did much to help and support the author. Patchen mentions him in his book Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer in a dialogue discussing art and artists: "And what about DeNiro? There is a serious young painter. All right what about Kamrowski? -- Or Lee Bell? Or Jackson Pollock? -- Or Arthur Sturcke?" .
