The Picture of Dorian Gray (Original screenplay for the 1945 film, with 41 original still photographs)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1943. Complete script for the 1945 film, along with 41 vintage single weight still photographs. Based on the 1890 novel by Oscar Wilde. Script is equivalent to a nearly 3-hour version of the classic film, finally released at a length of 110 minutes. Photographs break down to 14 reference photographs, 22 test photographs (Hurd Hatfield, Angela Lansbury, and Lowell Gilmore), and 1 snapshot size test photograph (Angela Lansbury). A man has his portrait painted, and the portrait magically takes on the ability to absorb the sins of his debauched life while he remains unaged. The tale becomes a tragic warning against a selfish and unconsidered life, as Gray becomes increasingly paranoid that someone will discover the image of his true self. The painting of Dorian Gray was commissioned expressly for the film, by artist Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, and evolved during production. The piece is now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Black-and-White Cinematography, and nominated for two others. Set in 19th century London. Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as COMPLETE on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 69 and production No. 5069, dated 11-5-43, with credits for screenwriter director Lewin and producer Berman. Title page integral with the first page of the text. 166 leaves, mimeograph, with white and pink revision pages throughout, dated variously between 8/23/43 and 3/7/44. Pages about Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound with two gold brads. Still photographs all Near Fine or better. Complete collation details available on request. Selby, p. 93.

And Now Tomorrow (Original screenplay for the 1944 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1943. Revised draft for the 1943 film. Co-written for the screen by Raymond Chandler and Frank Partos. Chandler's contribution to the script had mostly to do with Alan Ladd's character and his tough dialogue (elements sneered at by the media upon the film's release). Laid in is an 8-page shooting schedule on blue stock, a 6-page revision to sequence "A" on yellow onionskin stock, and 14 pages of "inter-office communication" on yellow studio stationery (comments on scenes, sequences, and pages of the script). Based on Rachel Field's 1942 novel, about Emily Blair (Loretta Young), a wealthy deaf girl whose hometown is named for her family. Doctor Vance (Ladd) , who grew up on the other side of town, resents the Blair family, but is working on a serum to cure deafness which he tries on Emily, and she is eventually cured. One of only five screenplays written by Chandler, this being the second, following his script for the classic "Double Indemnity" (1944), based on James M. Cain's novel. Chandler had a tumultuous career in Hollywood, including a suspension in late 1945 from Paramount for "refusing to perform under a contract which is not a proper expression of my standing in the motion picture business," but his influence on film adaptation is nearly unmatched, with scripts and stories that pushed the limits of the Production Code Administration. Script: White self wrappers, production No. SF 8577, dated December 3, 1943, with credits for screenwriters Partos and Chandler. Title page integral with front wrapper in the Paramount style. 137 leaves, mimeograph, with blue and light blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 1/11/43 (possibly a typo) and 3/30/44, other leaves dated variously between 12/3/43 and 12/5/44 (possibly a typo). Pages Near Fine, wrapper now encapsulated in mylar, with cello tape and spine label remnants, bound with two gold brads. Shooting Schedule: Corner-stapled blue stock, noted as 4TH TENTATIVE BLUE / BASED ON A-B-C-D-E (PART) SEQUENCES, dated 12/13/43 (start) and 2/9/44 (close), with credits for director Pichel, assistant director O. (Oscar) Rudolph, and business manager B. (Bernard) McEveety. 8 pages, folded horizontally, rust to the staple, else Near Fine. Revision: Yellow onionskin stock, loose but bound with a paperclip. Holograph notations in pencil to the last leaf (recto and verso), detailing a few scene changes. 6 pages, folded horizontally, paperclip indentation and rust to the clip, else Near Fine. Inter-Office Communication: Corner-stapled yellow studio stationery, dated variously between 2/15/43 and 1/3/44. The earliest dated page contains notes on the script, noting Talbot Jennings as the screenwriter. 14 pages, hole punches at the top edges, rust to the staples, else Near Fine. Luhr, Raymond Chandler and Film, pp. 39-41. MacShane, pp. 62-63.

[16 pp (unpaginated)]., photo illustrations & text illustrations throughout. Illustrated self-printed wrappers (minor creasing, shelfwear), still VG copy, stapled as issued. This fantastic Miniature Fashion Mannequin doll and case offer an invaluable time capsule for a vital piece of the Home Front effort during World War II. Introduced just before the War, these Fashiondols produced by Latexture Products were intended to offer young girls the means to practice sewing and learn to produce their own fashion designs, without having to use adult size patterns. With wartime rationing, and fabrics in short supply, these fashion mannequins offered an excellent means to train young women. Perhaps the most significant aspect of these fashion dolls was that matching patterns could be purchased from Simplicity in adult sizes as well, so mothers and daughters could sit side by side and sew the same dress, fit their respective mannequins, or crochet miniature hats. The Miniature Fashion Sewing Book is exceedingly scarce and instructions called for the same construction used in adult sewing: intricate shaping with darts and tucks, side placket openings, facings and lapels, with no simplifying of instructions for young hands. Typically these kits were purchased with just the doll and possibly the dress form, and a couple sewing kit pieces, but more elaborate ones like this would have extra trays for holding fashions completed, extra supplies, and lots of room for additional patterns. This present kit includes several finished pieces by the young fashion designer -- muslin blouse & apron, cotton colour percale apron, a slip, a strapless red silk evening dress w/ black lace trim, a red striped sundress, and the doll is dressed in an excellent miniature representation of a Women?s Army Auxiliary Corps uniform. These Miniature Fashion Mannequins continued to be heavily marketed into the early 1950s, and paved the way for future adult fashion dolls such as Barbie, and those similar which followed. See: Womans Day, February, March, April, May, June, November, 1943 for Rationing information of fabrics; S.S. Kresge 1942 fall needlework catalogue; Wade Laboissonniere, Blueprints in Fashion, home sewing of the 1940s (1997); Worldcat locates 1 similar piece (National Library of Australia); No copies located of the 2 books.

        THE FOUNTAINHEAD.

Philadelphia:: Blakiston Co. (Bobbs-Merrill,. 1943).. Early printing, SIGNED BY RAND. In what appears to us to be Bobbs-Merrill green cloth with Blakiston on title page but no publisher on spine. According to Richard E. Ralston in his essay "Publishing The Fountainhead" (in ESSAY'S ON AYN RAND'S THE FOUNTAINHEAD, edited by Robert Mayhew, 2007), "Wartime paper quotas were allocated to publishers based on their sales in a base year. Blakiston, a small publisher of a one-shot Red Cross manual in that year, had a much larger quota than it could use and based on their government-provided access to paper made license deals with major publishers that now sould like a scene from ATLAS SHRUGGED." As Bobbs-Merrill had printed an initial run of 7500 copies and a second printing of 2500 copies before turning to Blakiston, it would appear that Blakiston's is technically the third printing of the book. Rand's first major literary success--more than 6 million copies of the book have been sold worldwide. Howard Roark is an individualistic young architect who struggles in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision. He is considered the author's ideal man, and his struggles reflect Rand's personal belief that individualism trumps collectivism (Wiki). Rejected by twelve publishers before editor Archibald Ogden at Bobbs-Merrill risked his job to get it published, the novel was made into a Hollywood film in 1949 with a screenplay by Rand and Gary Cooper as Roark. Green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and front cover. Spine lettering flaking but readable, otherwise very good to near fine. Lacking dust jacket. .

        Cyclopedia on Pawnbroking

Cincinnati: J. W. Taylor Publishing Co.,, 1943. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front board lettered silver, top edge red. Spine rolled, upper tip bumped; an excellent copy in the jacket with bright front panel, toned spine and some loss to spine ends. First edition, inscribed on the front free endpaper ("Compliments of Henry G. Hodges") and dated 11 January 1949. A study of the social and economic problems presented by the pawnbroking industry, in which Hodges advocates legislation, licensing, regulations and sanctions. "Pawnbroking literature is about as scarce today as was that on the subject of syphilis at the beginning of the century. Since there are at least as many citizens personally interested in the former as the latter, one wonders why pawnbroking is still so little discussed as a social and economic problem after more than a thousand years of operation … whereas syphilis has no organised defenders, the good deeds of pawnbrokers are heralded, and their evil practices defended by paid public relations experts and legislative lobbies" (preface).

THE SPIDER WOMAN (Original First Draft Script for the 1944 Sherlock Holmes Universal film adaptation of The Sign Of Four, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of The Devil's Foot, & The Final Problem)

Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1943. Doyle, A. Conan (Eric Taylor, screenwriter). THE SPIDER WOMAN [here bearing the initial discarded title "Sherlock Holmes in Peril"]. Based on plot points derived from the novel "The Sign Of Four" but also the short stories: "The Final Problem," "The Adventure of the Empty House," "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by A. Conan Doyle. Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1943. Dated March 6th, 1943, this is the earliest known first draft of the script of THE SPIDER WOMAN, the screenwriter's unique carbon copy (not studio-mimeographed), typed on onion skin paper, complete in 130pp. It is brad-bound and housed in original drab brown studio covers and bears production number 7122. The original front cover is brittle as usual and starting to split but the pages themselves are supple and very good. There are no annotations or ownership marks other than the studio stamp. In February 1943, Eric Taylor was given a Universal contract to write this script, he was later re-written by prolific Universal Sherlock screenwriter Bernard Millhauser and consequently Taylor was not credited on the final film, a mystery in itself. Taylor's career included over fifty film credits among which can be found "The Spider Woman Strikes Back," "Phantom of the Opera," and "The Ghost of Frankenstein." Given Eric Taylor was replaced shortly after this draft, our conjecture is that this may be the only extant version of the film script in its earliest form, all studio-mimeographed copies being the later Millhauser re-write (a final draft of which was delivered to the Breen office on May 8th, 1943). What little is known about this early draft can be found in "Hardboiled In Hollywood" by David E. Wilt (University of Wisconsin Press, 1991) [WITH:] a studio-mimeographed copy of the final continuity and dialogue script for "SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SPIDER WOMAN" complete and dated July 29th, 1943 in Very Good, fresh condition. THE SPIDER WOMAN starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce with Gayle Sondergaard in the menacing if delightful guest starring role, directed by Roy William Neill. Simply known as THE SPIDER WOMAN, dropping the mention of Sherlock Holmes in the title, the film was released on January 21st, 1944 to excellent reviews and even better box office. Please see our other original Universal Sherlock Holmes scripts we have in stock.. Original Wraps. Very Good.

        Historia Cuculi Canori

1943-1949. NA. Very Good. Highly unusual, handsome manuscript of the scientific data, findings and proceedings of a small ornithology club dedicated to the collection and study of cuckoo eggs, enlivened with sixteen original watercolors of cuckoos, club members, etc. Folio, 39.5 by 29 cm. 171 leaves. (First part unpaginated, followed by 117 pp.) The club was called the Cuculus Canorus Club and was formed in 1943, with four members -- Gordon and Saxon Pagesmith and Douglas and Walter Kemp. A stated objective of the club was to present the collection it would be assembling to the Natural History Museum, and in fact, Gordon Pagesmith did make a significant contribution of bird eggs to that museum, separate from the club's collection. The club ended up collecting about 83 clutches of eggs of cuckoos and the host birds. Besides the diligent compilation of scientific data presented in the text, a source of interest is this club's eccentric rules and proceedings. One of the most entertaining watercolors is of a dinner of the club members, in which they are caricatured. This is in addition to the charming colorful portraits of the birds, their eggs, and various locations. The front cover states it is Vol. 1. Vol. 2 is included, and this manuscript is complete. Heavy soiling of the front cover, and some lighter soiling on just a few other leaves. Mostly clean. The manuscript's leaves are loose, with some leaves collected into loose gatherings. A few creases along the edges.

CHARTER OF HEART MOUNTAIN RELOCATION CENTER WYOMING [caption title]

Heart Mountain, Wy, 1943. Mimeographed sheets, stapled. Near fine. Charter devised and printed by the members of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, together with a summary of the Charter Commission's work. The internment camp at Heart Mountain opened in August 1942 and closed in November 1945. Over the course of the three years it existed as a War Relocation Authority facility, some 13,997 incarcerees passed through the Heart Mountain internment camp. Many were destined to stay within its barbed wire confines the entire time. At its peak, the camp population was 10,767. The camp functioned as a small town - albeit within the confines of a barbed wire fence and with group mess halls for all the dining - with schools, jobs, medical facilities, etc. The preamble of the charter reads: "We, the residents of Heart Mountain Relocation Center, Wyoming, composed of American citizens of Japanese ancestry, alien Japanese, and other racial groups, involuntarily evacuated from the Pacific Coast, in the cooperative spirit of assisting the Project Director of this Center, as free persons, and as classes of persons, associating ourselves as one common body, to establish justice and promote the welfare of this community, do hereby adopt this Charter. The approval and the acceptance of this Charter, in its entirety or any part hereof do not in any manner whatsoever, relinquish nor surrender any of the rights and privileges of said groups as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America." The charter further outlines qualifications for voting, the legislative body and its powers, the format for general elections, and other governing provisions. A scarce piece of printing from this Japanese internment camp.
