        A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

New York: Harper and Brothers. (1943). First. First edition. Bookplate of Kathryn Cravens on the front pastedown, slight fading to the cloth, and some smaller stains on the front fly and edges of the following few leaves, an about very good copy in worn, good first issue dustwrapper with chipping, mostly at the spine ends and bottom of the front panel. The recipient, Kathryn Cochran Cravens, 1898--1991, was a radio personality, actress and writer from Texas was the first female news commentator to be broadcast from coast to coast.A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is the much-beloved story of Francie Nolan, growing up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. A huge bestseller, copies of the first edition (poorly manufactured because of wartime restrictions on materials) in presentable condition have become very uncommon. Basis for the first film directed by Elia Kazan, which featured Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, and Oscar winners Peggy Ann Garner and James Dunn (who touchingly brought his considerable experience as a real alcoholic to the screen). The first edition is uncommon, especially signed and inscribed. .

        The Fountainhead

Indianapolis and New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company 1943 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt to the front board and spine; in the first issue dust jacket, with sixteen titles to the back panel, lettered in red, white and silver. Near fine, with light wear and rubbing to the extremities, a hint of faint spotting to the rear endpapers, former owner's pencil inscription to the front free endpaper; unclipped dust jacket, with some creasing to the front panel and spine, some toning to the spine, light soiling to the panels, small chips to the spine ends, light rubbing to the folds. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy in the rare original dust jacket, scarce in any condition. Housed in a custom brown folding box with brown morocco spine. The Fountainhead is Ayn Rand's first commercially successful novel and is centered on her philosophy of Objectivism, which maintains that individualism exists outside of consciousness and that the each person's moral life purpose should be one's own personal happiness. She continued to develop this philosophy in later novels, including Atlas Shrugged. The Fountainhead tells of protagonist Howard Roark, an architect determined to stay true to his personal ideas and ideals, even if it means rejection by mainstream society. As the dust jacket explains, "This book is based on a challenging belief in the importance of selfishness, on the provocative idea that man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress." Appropriately, this novel about individual struggle in the face of conformity had its own struggle to be published; The Fountainhead was rejected by thirteen publishers before being published by Bobbs-Merrill. The novel received a lack of critical success, but managed to become a popular best-seller, largely due to its fans' word of mouth. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Little Prince

First edition in English, first printing, number 436 of 500 numbered copies, from a limited edition of 525 copies signed by the author on the limitation leaf. Very good in a very good dust jacket supplied from a first trade edition of the book, with the $2.00 price intact on the front flap (the price was clipped on the jackets supplied by the publisher for the signed limited edition). Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. This copy is unique, because it is from the personal library, with her bookplate, of Libby Holman Reynolds, the controversial bisexual actress and torchsinger who married an heir to the Reynolds tobacco fortune and flaunted social mores of her time. The bookplate portrays her famous mansion in Connecticut, Treetops. A rare and important first edition of a classic children's story with a distinctive association which we think the free-thinking author would have appreciated.

        AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED.

An American Place, July 3, 1943., [New York]: - Handwritten note, presumably written in response to a question put to Stieglitz at his gallery: "I have no favorite American author. There are some that hold me equally. Each in his own particular way"; above which Stieglitz has written "An American Place / July 3--43," then "You desire this: / Alfred Stieglitz." An American Place was Stieglitz's third and final gallery, which he ran from 1929 until his death in 1946. The note is on a thin sheet of 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper. Flattened creasing where folded and some wear wear to edges, still very good.         [Four Autograph Letters, Signed (Three as "Monty," one as "Cap. Kidd"), one with Original Pencil Drawing]

Washington, Providence, Montauk, etc., 1943. Three in ink, one in pencil. Folded for mailing, otherwise fine, accompanied by two envelopes addressed in his hand, hastily torn open at one end. Four substantial, boisterous, opinionated and occasionally inebriated letters from Flagg to Willis Birchman (addressed variously as "Kid," "Country Gentlemen," "Dear Temperamental Meringue," and "Will Bill") who became one of Flagg's frequent correspondents as a consequence of Birchman having featured Flagg in his 1937 book, FACES & FACTS BY AND ABOUT 26 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. One letter, 4pp. in ink on letterhead of the Providence Biltmore, consists of an account of a rather Cutty Sark driven meeting with "Cecil" (likely film star Cecil Humphreys, with whom he had a long association). Another letter, 4pp., written on letterhead of Montauk Manor, at Montauk Beach, is in pencil and opens with an attractive pencil drawing of a beach scene, with cars parked and facing out over the ocean; it relates chiefly to the circumstances of his stay at Montauk and is signed "Cap. Kidd." Another letter, 4pp, in ink, on letterhead of the Hotel Raleigh, relates to events surrounding a vague series of meetings in Washington DC, involving representatives of the Australian and British governments, stops at embassies, a meeting with Sumner Welles, etc. The last letter, dated simply Friday, 2pp. in ink, is somewhat diffuse, but mentions a pending trip to Washington and meetings there, perhaps anticipating the stay mentioned in the letter above. Flagg (1877 - 1960) was, in his time, one of the most prolific and popular of American artists and illustrators. His best known work was one of the most widely distributed recruitment posters for the US military: the iconic image of Uncle Sam, captioned "I Want YOU for U.S. Army"

Typed Document Signed, biographical content, with many holograph annotations, 4 separate 4to pages, ca 1971; Two Typed Letters Signed, on Rutgers University stationery, each 4to, August 1, 1966, and October 1, 1971

"Selman Waksman: Discoverer of a Wonder Drug 1943," is the title of the typed document containing the draft of biographical information which he generously corrected. The draft was for the book, "The Laureates: Jewish Winners of the Nobel Prize," (Tina Levitan, 1960 First edition). Here he edits the section on his biography as explained in his 1971 letter to Levitan. In the letter he notes that "made a number of important corrections and changes. He also writes, "The first announcement of the work on streptomycin was published early in 1944 in the journal Science...." He encloses a "laboratory photograph of myself...." He signs, "Selman A. Waksman." The article he extensively corrects is titled, "Selman A. Waksman: Discoverer of a Wonder Drug 1943." He adds the "A" after his first name. The earlier TLS, 1966, to Levitan discusses royalties and production of streptomycin in other countries. Waksman coined the term antibiotics. He and his team of researchers discovered a range of drugs to treat infectious diseases, including Streptomycin and Neomycin. Streptomycin was the first antibiotic to cure tuberculosis. He accomplished his work at Rutgers University where he established an institute for the study of microbiology in 1954. It was renamed for him after his death.
