THE SPIDER WOMAN (Original First Draft Script for the 1944 Sherlock Holmes Universal film adaptation of The Sign Of Four, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of The Devil's Foot, & The Final Problem)

Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1943. Doyle, A. Conan (Eric Taylor, screenwriter). THE SPIDER WOMAN [here bearing the initial discarded title "Sherlock Holmes in Peril"]. Based on plot points derived from the novel "The Sign Of Four" but also the short stories: "The Final Problem," "The Adventure of the Empty House," "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by A. Conan Doyle. Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1943. Dated March 6th, 1943, this is the earliest known first draft of the script of THE SPIDER WOMAN, the screenwriter's unique carbon copy (not studio-mimeographed), typed on onion skin paper, complete in 130pp. It is brad-bound and housed in original drab brown studio covers and bears production number 7122. The original front cover is brittle as usual and starting to split but the pages themselves are supple and very good. There are no annotations or ownership marks other than the studio stamp. In February 1943, Eric Taylor was given a Universal contract to write this script, he was later re-written by prolific Universal Sherlock screenwriter Bernard Millhauser and consequently Taylor was not credited on the final film, a mystery in itself. Taylor's career included over fifty film credits among which can be found "The Spider Woman Strikes Back," "Phantom of the Opera," and "The Ghost of Frankenstein." Given Eric Taylor was replaced shortly after this draft, our conjecture is that this may be the only extant version of the film script in its earliest form, all studio-mimeographed copies being the later Millhauser re-write (a final draft of which was delivered to the Breen office on May 8th, 1943). What little is known about this early draft can be found in "Hardboiled In Hollywood" by David E. Wilt (University of Wisconsin Press, 1991) [WITH:] a studio-mimeographed copy of the final continuity and dialogue script for "SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SPIDER WOMAN" complete and dated July 29th, 1943 in Very Good, fresh condition. THE SPIDER WOMAN starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce with Gayle Sondergaard in the menacing if delightful guest starring role, directed by Roy William Neill. Simply known as THE SPIDER WOMAN, dropping the mention of Sherlock Holmes in the title, the film was released on January 21st, 1944 to excellent reviews and even better box office. Please see our other original Universal Sherlock Holmes scripts we have in stock.. Original Wraps. Very Good.

        Historia Cuculi Canori

1943-1949. NA. Very Good. Highly unusual, handsome manuscript of the scientific data, findings and proceedings of a small ornithology club dedicated to the collection and study of cuckoo eggs, enlivened with sixteen original watercolors of cuckoos, club members, etc. Folio, 39.5 by 29 cm. 171 leaves. (First part unpaginated, followed by 117 pp.) The club was called the Cuculus Canorus Club and was formed in 1943, with four members -- Gordon and Saxon Pagesmith and Douglas and Walter Kemp. A stated objective of the club was to present the collection it would be assembling to the Natural History Museum, and in fact, Gordon Pagesmith did make a significant contribution of bird eggs to that museum, separate from the club's collection. The club ended up collecting about 83 clutches of eggs of cuckoos and the host birds. Besides the diligent compilation of scientific data presented in the text, a source of interest is this club's eccentric rules and proceedings. One of the most entertaining watercolors is of a dinner of the club members, in which they are caricatured. This is in addition to the charming colorful portraits of the birds, their eggs, and various locations. The front cover states it is Vol. 1. Vol. 2 is included, and this manuscript is complete. Heavy soiling of the front cover, and some lighter soiling on just a few other leaves. Mostly clean. The manuscript's leaves are loose, with some leaves collected into loose gatherings. A few creases along the edges.

CHARTER OF HEART MOUNTAIN RELOCATION CENTER WYOMING [caption title]

Heart Mountain, Wy, 1943. Mimeographed sheets, stapled. Near fine. Charter devised and printed by the members of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, together with a summary of the Charter Commission's work. The internment camp at Heart Mountain opened in August 1942 and closed in November 1945. Over the course of the three years it existed as a War Relocation Authority facility, some 13,997 incarcerees passed through the Heart Mountain internment camp. Many were destined to stay within its barbed wire confines the entire time. At its peak, the camp population was 10,767. The camp functioned as a small town - albeit within the confines of a barbed wire fence and with group mess halls for all the dining - with schools, jobs, medical facilities, etc. The preamble of the charter reads: "We, the residents of Heart Mountain Relocation Center, Wyoming, composed of American citizens of Japanese ancestry, alien Japanese, and other racial groups, involuntarily evacuated from the Pacific Coast, in the cooperative spirit of assisting the Project Director of this Center, as free persons, and as classes of persons, associating ourselves as one common body, to establish justice and promote the welfare of this community, do hereby adopt this Charter. The approval and the acceptance of this Charter, in its entirety or any part hereof do not in any manner whatsoever, relinquish nor surrender any of the rights and privileges of said groups as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America." The charter further outlines qualifications for voting, the legislative body and its powers, the format for general elections, and other governing provisions. A scarce piece of printing from this Japanese internment camp.

        A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

New York: Harper & Brothers, (1943). Octavo, original green cloth, printed paper spine label, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket. Lightest edgewear to jacket, tiny chips to spine ends and corners. First edition of Betty Smith's classic coming-of-age novel, the story of Francie Nolan, a thoughtful girl ?"made out of thin invisible steel?" struggling to make her way in the tenements of Williamsburg: ?"Brooklyn. It's a magic city and it isn't real . . . it's like a dream of being poor and fighting.?" A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was an immediate bestseller. Overseas, the novel was the most popular of the Armed Services paperback editions; Smith received hundreds of letters from soldiers who had never been to Brooklyn, but recognized their own hometowns in Francie's vividly described neighborhood. The troops' demand for ?"?'that Brooklyn tree?' was so high that a second edition was issued in July 1944, a first for the project.?" A bright near-fine copy of a fragile wartime book.

Confidential Report of the History of the Buna Campaign. Dec. 1, 1942 - Jan. 25, 1943

Melbourne?:: Privately printed for U.S. Army,. 1943.. Hardcover. Very good condition. "This is an account of the participation of American troops in the Buna campaign, the first victorious operation of American army ground forces against the Japanese". It includes observations of the Japanese, Americans, and translations of captured Japanese letters, and is a critique to improve future encounters with the enemy. Privately printed for U.S. Army use during the New Guinea campaign in WWII, with much material on the Australian involvement in the Buna campaign. The Buna- Gona campaign (Nov 16, 1942 - Jan 22 1943), followed the Kokoda Trail campaign, Australia's most important campaign of the Second World War. The Buna campaign was a costly joint American - Australian effort which resulted in the loss of almost 4,000 Australians, and American fatalities which Eichelberger compared to the heaviest battles of the Civil War. The Allies learned at Buna that heavy weapons and air support would be essential to fighting the strong Japanese defensive positions throughout the Pacific. Printed typescript bound in printed hardboard covers, with brown cloth spine, possibly printed in Melbourne. Small folio, 8 1/4 x 13", 4 unpaginated pages, 105 typewritten pages, printed on one side. Folding plates and maps include: 17 folding printed photographs; 3 fold out color maps, lettered A, B & C; and 2 Chain of Command charts (designated Chart 1 & 2). Many pages include printed photographs in text. Chipped top and bottom of spine, corners bumped, otherwise very good condition. Some of the large folding panoramas are loose, due to the glue having dried out. At the front board, above the title, is written "Col. Reeder" and "this copy of this report sent to me by registered mail by Lt. Gen. Eichelberger. Russell Reeder, Col. G. S. C."

William Lyon MacKenzie King signed letter on Prime Minister letterhead to Gordon Drapper marked "personal

Ottawa: William Lyon MacKenzie King, 1943. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. 4pp. Flat size is 10 x 8 inches and folded to 5 x 8 inches. On Prime Minister letterhead, dated Ottawa March 11, 1943 and marked "personal". Old fold tear repair on page two and paper agetoned, otherwise, very good condition.A very nice 2 page typed and personalized and signed letter by McKenzie King. He is responding to a gift of a book called The Prospector and Other Poems (27 poems) sent to him by Gordon Dagger. WLMK marked this personal and as such was open and honest in his gratitude and appreciation for the gift and most importantly commenting in this letter " I have just completed the reading of 'The Prospector' and 'Spirit Forms'; also 'Red Banners', which you have kindly written out for me in your own hand. I have also read the forward. I am also looking forward to the pleasure, within the next day or two, of reading the other poems." WLMK goes on in the letter with many compliments to Gordon Dagger clearly enjoying his writing very much. The forward in the book King is referring to is quoted here... "Art in conflict - it has always been because it is misunderstood by so many who fail to grasp its meaning - much to be regretted - by no mean for by being rejected the urge for expression in the soul of the true artist often grows deeper with defeat". William Lyon MacKenzie King was Prime Minister of Canada from 1921-1926, 1926-1930, and 1935-1948, a total of almost 22 years. William Lyon Mackenzie King, grandson of William Lyon Mackenzie, was deputy Minister of Labour (1900-1908) before being appointed Canada's first Minister of Labour (1909-1911). Re-elected to the Canadian Parliament (1919), he became leader of the Liberal Party. As Prime Minister, he favored social reform without socialism; he led the government with support from an alliance of Liberals and Progressives. King effected a more independent relationship between the Commonwealth nations and Britain. During and after World War II he unified a country often divided between English and French constituents.

        Arrival and Departure.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1943. First edition of the third novel . Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page in the month of publication, "Elisa Mann from Arthur Koestler London, 24.XI.43." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Written during the middle of World War II, Arrival and Departure reflects Koestler's own plight as a Hungarian refugee. Like Koestler, the main character is a former member of the Communist party. He escapes to 'Neutralia', a neutral country based on Portugal, where Koestler himself had gone, and flees from there. Reviewing Arrival and Departure in December 1943 George Orwell called it notable "for what must be one of the most shocking descriptions of Nazi terrorism that have ever been written."

Rare Autograph Letter Signed, in English, 2 pp on one 8vo sheet, accompanying signed envelope postmarked, New York, Feb. 28, 1943

      - Mondrain writes to American Abstract Artists, AAA, founding member Gertrude Greene (1904 - 1956). She and Balcomb Greene (1904-90), her husband, were active proponents of Abstract Art. Gertrude, a painter and sculptor, worked as a gallery attendant at the AAA's first annual exhibition and was the group's first paid employee. The Greenes were active with the AAA committee and worked to gain acceptance of abstract art. Balcomb Greene served as the first president of the AAA whose members included Willem De Kooning, Ad Reinhardt, Lee Krasner, Holtzman and European artists who like Mondrian emigrated to the US including Josef Albers and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Mondrian thanks Greene for her letter and writes, "I am glad to hear you and [Balcomb] both are well. I shall send the $4 dues to Mr. Cavallonl I am very sorry about not showing at the A.A.A. but I don't like to come with old works at a such [sic] important exhibit. Harry Holtzman is still in Kansas waiting for the service, I think. I did not hear from them. Hoping to meet you again at the opening A.A.A. He writes and signs in a large hand, "Piet Mondrian." He signs again in the return address on the back of the accompanying envelope, "P. Mondrian." The letter is slightly trimmed at the bottom edge. Gertrude Glass Greene was an abstract artist from New York City. American Abstract Artists (AAA) was formed in 1936 in New York City, to promote and foster public understanding of abstract art. American Abstract Artists exhibitions, publications, and lectures helped to establish the organization as a major forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas, and for presenting abstract art to a broader public. The AAA had a historic role in establishing avant-garde art in the US and is one of the few artists' organizations to survive from the Great Depression and into the 21st century. Harry Holtzman (1912 - 1987) was an American artist and founding member of the American Abstract Artists group. As executor of Mondrian's Estate, Holtzman continued his involvement with Mondrian's art and in 1983 he co-edited a volume of Mondrian's complete essays. During the German Blitz of London in 1940, Holtzman arranged for Mondrian to come to New York, where he arrived that October. Giorgio Cavallon (1904-1989) was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists and a pioneer Abstract Expressionist.

World War II life in Hawaii and the Pacific, as recorded in a collection of 129 postcards showing scenes in the Hawaiian Islands, almost all with manuscript messages from Chambers to members of his family concerning his activities in World War II and life in Hawaii and elsewhere in the Pacific theater, generally writing a single letter using several cards sequentially (such groups presumably then mailed together in envelopes, not present here; approximately 7500 words in total)

Various places in the Pacific, , 1943-1945. 129 postcards (including a few duplicates), almost all 3 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches, including 83 black-and-white real photo postcards, 41 color real photo postcards, and four color illustrated postcards, picturing scenes of native life in Hawaii, surfers, a luau, hula dancers, pineapple fields and other agricultural pursuits, native plants, public buildings, and island scenery, most with printed captions; included are 33 complete letters home (each letter on one to four postcards, totaling 83 cards and approximately 5000 words), five letters lacking the salutation card and two letters lacking the closing card (19 cards total, approximately 1000 words), 23 unmatched cards (8 salutations, 7 interior pages, 8 closings, approximately 1500 words), and two cards without messages, one with a return address only, and one to a family member from another soldier. Chambers, a corporal with Battery B, 811 Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion, was from Madison, Indiana; he was stationed in the Pacific theater for three years, often recording his location, in his messages, as "somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean." At one point he mentions being short only ten points for discharge, saying the army would not give extra credit for his time on Canton Island (in the Phoenix Island chain between Hawaii and Fiji); along the way he mentions the heat, salt water, "night visitors" when the moon is too bright, baseball games between army and navy teams, with some big league players participating, the death of Ernie Pyle, etc. His misery comes through occasionally and longing for home, despite efforts to allay his family?'s fears. A personalized view of the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific theater in World War II, combined with a pictorial record of the islands during that period. Some images rubbed or a bit faded, but a very good lot. (#6406)
