[No place, 1942. Near Fine. Quartos. Brad bound typed leaves printed rectos only. Combination ribbon and carbon copies. Scripts have the printed admonition "Restricted for Army Use Only" and both are stamped as "Master Copy as Recorded." Heavily edited in ink or blue pencil. Both episodes also starred Frances Langford, Jerry Colona, and Skinny Ennis and his Orchestra. Each show had elements of a Christmas theme about them. The text of one script references Hope 1942 film Road to Morocco, and additionally it seems consist with Pepsodent toothpaste's sponsorship of the Show, thus our attribution of date. Two scripts that were obviously used in the recording of the shows, and presumably rare.

Sandoz, Mari
New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. Book. Octavo (8vo). Signed by Author(s). [xv], 428 pages. Original hardcover binding with minor shelfwear, and dark spots of discoloration along top and bottom edges where the adhesive from an old dustjacket protector offset onto the cloth binding. The unclipped dustjacket has a few small tears and creases, minor soiling, and some discoloration from the old dustjacket protector adhesive, mainly on inside which is out of view; protected in new archival mylar. Includes the folding map of Crazy Horse Country which is without defect. Pages 317-320 have offset staining from an original newspaper clipping containing book reviews. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front endpaper "For [name withheld], because he has seen the region where Sioux moccasins once traveled, and has an understanding heart. Sincerely [signed] Mari Sandoz." Some of the adhesive staining transferred to the top and/or bottom edge of the first or final few pages of text, sometimes weakening the paper and causing a minuscule chip, not affecting the inscribed page. Minor browning to the endpapers, and minor browning to the outer front hinge, which is much less than what is typically encountered. A small spot of discoloration to the top of the closed page edges. Stated on copyright page: First Edition. Very good-condition. Very good-condition (DJ). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Calcutta: Thacker, Spink & Co (1933) Ltd., 1942. THOMAS, Dylan, et al.
Mount Vernon, NY: Peter Pauper Press, 1942. Mount Vernon, NY: Peter Pauper Press,, 1942. An Anthology of British and American Verse, edited by Oscar Williams. Octavo. Original white half cloth, black paper sides, titles to green paper label to spine, top edge red. Title page printed in red and black. With 4 plates of poets' portraits in black and white. Spine browned, tiny scuff to edge of paper label, rubbing to extremities, a little loss to paper at board edges, cloth a little soiled, occasional foxing to contents, a little offsetting to endpapers; a very good copy. First edition, signed limited issue. Dylan Thomas's copy of one of the 33 copies presented to contributors; an 26 additional lettered copies were also issued for sale, all in publisher's cloth and boards. Each work was signed by the contributing poets: Thomas's own inscription, the last on the four page list, is particularly notable, as he has signed his name, "Uncle Dylan Thomas & all", referencing the folk song Widdecombe Fair, the chorus of which lists an expansive group heading to the fair, ending with "Uncle Tom Cobley and all!". The song is illustrated, with music and lyrics, in a Devonshire cider company's 12 page advertising leaflet, dated 1934, loosely inserted into this copy. Five of Thomas's poems, including "And Death Shall Have No Dominion", are included, with the other poets, namely: Conrad Aiken, Kenneth Allott, W. H. Auden, George Barker, John Peale Bishop, R. P. Blackmur, Hugh Chisholm, Gene Derwood, Richard Eberhart, William Empson, Jean Garrigue, Horace Gregory, Alfred Hayes, Ruth Herschber … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.R.R. Tolkien
1942. Used. Once thought to have no dust jacket as none had been seen. Arguably more scarce than a 1st/1st. Thin book as printed on war time paper. The dust jacket is also war time paper that develops a pinkish tinge to the paper. The book is very good to near fine, scuffing to the spine cloth end, top page green slightly faded. The jacket has much paper loss to spine and spine ends, tearing and chipping, but otherwise complete with no restoration. There are many small tears and minor tattering to corners and edges, preserved from further damage with many small pieces of removable archival tape, keeping it all together. Sadly each time it is handled, small piece break off as the paper is so brittle due to the paper coating. The lower spine has completely split from the covers and the top of the spine paper. The top spine section is still attached to the cover, but detached from the back cover over along the seam. It is all original 3rd printing jacket no restoration. Because the 83 year old war time paper on this edition is thinner and has distinctive color on the reverse, it would not be possible restore the jacket or swap flaps etc.his would be obvious to see this on the reverse of the jacket. Note that because the book is half the depth of the 1st or 2nd and the jackets were sized for the thicker books, the jacket wraps around the book oddly and it creases differently near the flaps. Its wear patterns are different than later Hobbits. See all our Hobbits listed. Please note, shipping will be severely delayed until further notice. London: Printed by Alf Cooke Ltd, 1942. Colour lithographic map. Sheet 500 x 645mm. Folded as issued. A propaganda map of Australia, showing how the industry and agriculture of the continent was helping the war effort. Little vignettes mark the cattle, sheep, grain and wood regions, and icons note the various types of mining, with a key on the left. The map is decorated with Australia's coat of arms and a large compass rose. A text box reads: 'In War and Peace. Australia's industrial resources have been completely reorganised to meet war-time demands. Her factories are now turning out armaments of many types and aircraft, including fighters and bombers. Her shipbuilding programme includes destroyers, minesweepers and merchant vessels. In addition, Australia is contributing to a great wheat pool which will help to feed the starving peoples of Europe when the war is over' . Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884-1947), younger brother of Eric Gill, specialised in graphic design in the Arts and Crafts style. His most important commission was from the Imperial War Graves Commission, designing the script used on Commission headstones and war memorials, including the 'Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme'. LAIRESSE, Gerard de.
, . . Timmer, Gerard Lairesse (1942), p. 83, nr. 26; cf. Snoep, "Gerard Lairesse als plafond-en kamerschilder", in: Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum, Vol. 18 (1970), Nr. 4, pp. 198-209. First and only edition of a set of plates illustrating seven paintings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) in the council room of the former Court of Justice of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland (now called the Lairesse room) in the Binnenhof in The Hague. The Court commissioned the paintings in 1684 and they were completed by 1688. They depict Aeneas carrying his father Anchises, an allegorical figure of Justice and five scenes from ancient Roman history, each representing a different virtue: Pompei (prudence), Scipio (moderation), Horatius Cocles (courage), Scipio again (steadfastness) and Papyrius (clemency). The printed image of each plate measures about 40 x 28 cm. In three cases the painting fills the plate; the other four paintings, being more or less square (about 23 x 23 cm to 29 x 29 cm in the plates), are depicted within the architectural context. Binding used. A very good copy.

Chandler, Raymond
Los Angeles: 29 May 1942. 4 pp. typed on rectos only, signed by Chandler on page 4, dated and notarized below with raised seal. 4to. Chandler Sells Part of His Soul. Chandler assigns film rights for his third novel, completed in March 1942, here still bearing his original title, The Brasher Doubloon as well as the alternate title that Chandler gave it at Blanche Knopf's suggestion. The High Window was published by Knopf in August 1942. "In May of 1942 The High Window was sold to 20th Century-Fox for $3,500 as a second-run or B picture and was released the following year as Time to Kill" (Macshane, p. 105). At the time of the present assignment, Chandler had established a critical reputation but financial success eluded him. He sold film rights to Farewell, My Lovely (1940) for $2,000, and came to regret this intensely when Murder, My Sweet, the film of Farewell, My Lovely, proved a box office hit but earned Chandler no additional money. Rights to his first novel, The Big Sleep, remained unsold, in large part because of the restrictive climate of censorship of subject matter exercised by the Production Code Administration. Chandler was hired by Paramount in 1943 to work on the screenplay of Double Indemnity with Billy Wilder in part because Wilder was impressed by The High Window. Wilder and Chandler's collaboration was a landmark in film noir and marked a change in the climate of censorship in Hollywood, and thus cleared the way for the filming of The Big Sleep in 1944 and its release in 1946. The High Window was filmed again in 1946 and released in 1947 as The Brasher Doub … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kriz, Vilem
(Prague: Vilem Kriz, 1942). First ed. Folio, (1) pp. with 7 original silver gelatin photographs, each 15 1/8 x 11 1/2 inches. The single printed sheet, which serves as the title and colophon. is worn along three edges. The photographic prints are each SIGNED in pencil on the black reverse and most have very slight wear at a corner or two. All are contained in the original plain, cloth-backed black paper over boards portfolio, which is worn. A very good and complete set. Vilem Kriz, 1921 - 1994, was born in Prague where from 1940 - 1946, he studied photography at the State Graphic School under Frantisëk Drtikol, Jaromír Funke and Josef Ehm. In 1946, after the war in Europe ended, he moved briefly to Paris where he worked as a foreign correspondent for Czech newspapers and as a freelance photographer. He befriended Jean Cocteau and the Surrealist group of artists. In 1952, he emigrated to Berkeley, California, then in 1958, to Montreal, and from 1960 - 1964, he worked in the photographic department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 1964, he returned to Berkeley, where he remained until his death in 1994. He taught photography variously at Mills College, Holy Names College, the University of California, Berkeley, and the California College of Arts and Crafts. The influence of Jaromír Funke on Kriz is evident in this portfolio - Kriz was his assistant in 1942. The title of this work, his first published portfolio of original photographs, translates as, "The Abandoned Come Back to Life." It is limited to 50 numbered copies, this being number 21.
