Chesler Jr., Harry "A" (Features Syndicate) (Comics)
Remington Morse - Harry "A" Chesler Jr. Features Syndicate, NY/ Chicago, 1942. Book appears lightly read with a hint of wear at corners, edges and tips. A highly scarce, World War II vintage, combination comic book and humor digest featuring antics involving a USN sailor named Riggin' Bill. Comics and illustrations are on the right hand side pages, while an ongoing narrative told through letters takes up the left side pages. A periodical, it includes ads at inside covers but not much else in the way of indicia or dates. Appears to be from 1942 or 43. Full color on newsprint stock. 64 pages, but numbering is only on the pages that feature the letters, and the numbering appears to be continued from the first issue! Small ad near the rear of the comic/digest mentions 4 publications published by the company. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

POURRAT Henri MACE Fred
[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, review copy. Signed autograph of his friend Henri Pourrat Auvergne Robert Garric on a printed sheet of paper pasted on Auvergne and the first guard: ". the" leader "of the National Relief in … [Click Below for Full Description]

VIJF PONDEN PERS, De
[Click Below for Full Description]

ROBERT SHELDRICK
(1942). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating, original 1942 Newfoundland WWII 280+ page manuscript diary handwritten from the unique perspective of an Army lawyer, Robert Sheldrick, who was stationed in Newfoundland where he was responsible for lands and buildings leased or occupied by the Canadian army. An excellent diarist and keen observer detailing his duties and much of what happens around him his service work afforded him many uncommon insights which he shares with his journal. Readers will also be surprised by the complexity of the issues he faces and the work involved. Here are some snippets: 'proposed site for joint services cemeteries for protestant and R.C. personnel near the T.C.A. Building at Torbay had not been approved because coming down to the runway over a cemetery was considered to be well calculated to promote depression among pilots.' October 19, 1942 'Advised P.E.I.H. by telephone to strike off strength six men lost in the S.S. Caribou as 'missing believed drowned' on the date of the disaster' referencing the heinous Nazi attack by submarine of a civilian Newfoundland Railway passenger ferry killing 137 many women and children. 4°, 16 pp. full page illustrations printed in red, green and black, stapled (Very Good, wrappers slightly dusty, soft folds in margins). - Sukhumi, Abkhazia (Georgia): February 1942. A magnificent rare magazine with anti-Nazi caricatures by Abkhazian artists, printed in red, green, and black, was issued during WWII in Sukhumi. - This highly decorative satirical magazine with full size caricatures, printed in green, black and red only, was published in 1942, the year of the Battle of Caucasus and just before the Battle of Stalingrad. The Russian army, here always marked with red colour, is shown overpowering, tricking and beating up somehow ridiculous looking Germans. This is a superb example of WWII Russian propaganda and printing in provincial centers. According to the imprint on p. 2 the magazine was printed in 3000 examples. LIEUTENANT ALEXANDER C. BROWN C-V(S) USNR
1942. On offer is an absolutely super archive and significant historical group of typed and manuscript papers, mostly original, copies pertaining to official Navy memos and documents relating to the education received by Lieutenant Alexander C. Brown C-V(S) USNR of Alexandria Virginia at the newly created and opened [July 1st 1942] Harvard Naval Training School. [We note: There is a fascinating and very strong likelihood this Lt. Brown could very well be renowned and prolific author Alexander Crosby Brown of Maryland maritime tales and non fiction but we cannot make the final connection.] This group is significant on a number of levels. While the earliest date we find in a document dated September 1942 titled Memo 48. Most of the other materials likely come before that date and thusly this archive reveals the very complex education in radio engineering and foreign intelligence as evidenced by a portion of the papers called Correspondence Course in Foreign Intelligence with other sections headed Codes and Ciphers, Tactics, Radio Engineering, Charts and even a Hints to Newcomers memo. The papers are all loose with hints of having once been in binders or duo tangs thusly we cannot attest to whether the 3 inch stack of papers is complete though it does appear very comprehensive. Overall G+.. Good+. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript.

She mentions the death of Dr. Stirrett's in detail at his home in Nigeria and subsequent funeral. TURING, Alan Mathison.
The Association for Symbolic Logic, 1942. First edition, the very rare offprint issues, and with a fine provenance, of Turing's papers on Church's type theory. “Church's type theory is a formal logical language which includes first-order logic, but is more expressive in a practical sense. It is used, with some modifications and enhancements, in most modern applications of type theory. It is particularly well suited to the formalization of mathematics and other disciplines and to specifying and verifying hardware and software” (<i>Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy</i>). Offprints of Turing's papers are extremely rare in institutional holdings, and even more so in commerce. Copies of both offprints are in the Turing Archive at King's College, Cambridge, and also among those collected by Max Newman (now at Bletchley Park). We are not aware of any other copies having appeared in commerce. <br/><br/> Turing's interest in logic and computation began when he attended the lectures of Max Newman at Cambridge in 1935. This led, two years later, to the publication of his great work <i>On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem</i>, which included the introduction of the ‘universal Turing machine.' Turing spent the years1937-1939 at Princeton, where he completed his PhD under the supervision of Alonzo Church. From the latter part of 1939, Turing was engaged in war work at Bletchley Park. ‘Before the war my work was in logic and my hobby was cryptanalysis,' he once said, ‘and now it is the other way round.' He had to thank Newman for stimulating his th … [Click Below for Full Description]

DALLAS H.W. YOUNG
COBHAM SURREY ENGLAND: (1942). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a superb, original World War II and beyond manuscript diary handwritten by Dallas H. W. Young dated January 1942 to October 1946 being a fascinating and eclectic melange of intelligent observation and commentary on the global war news, family business, his toy soldier hobby, malaria bouts, and his return to the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment [since the Commandos are being disbanded after the war] and many references to his distinguished, famous and future author, son Peter, including entries about big war events, with Young Sr.'s analysis: Stalingrad, Pacific war events, D-Day, a very interesting dissertation on what the Atomic Bomb might mean to mankind, written the day of Hiroshima, as well as notes about Ghandi and the trouble he was causing the British. Included in the book are a few ephemeral items including one very interesting letter signed by W.G.H. Rawlinson a former Captain connected to Dallas. The letter makes a sadly bigoted reference to Harold Laski and 'yidds'. BIO NOTES: Mr. Young was a senior civil servant in the India Office in the 1930s/40s, [we note that Dallas Young was awarded an MBE] and his son was a quite famous war hero and later author: Brigadier Peter Young, DSO, MC. Peter Young joined the newly-formed Commandos, and landed with them at Dieppe, Sicily and on D-Day, being decorated for bravery each time. It's a journal style notebook, lined diary, 8 inches by 6.5, approximately 300 pages, overall G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good

Top edge gilt with new marbled end-papers. Very light toning and the occasional spotting to the text block. Free from inscriptions. The original book spine with the paper title label has been pasted to one of the rear end-papers. The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel by C. S. Lewis which is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior Demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter. The uncle's mentorship pertains to the nephew's responsibility in securing the damnation of a British man known only as 'the Patient'. A very attractive rebinding and scarce with such attributes.
