POTTER, Beatrix.
London: Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd, [c.1942]. Sextodecimo. Original cream boards, spine and front cover lettered in burgundy, pictorial label with illustration to front board, pictorial endpapers. Tiny touch of wear to very head of faintly browned spine. A very good, bright, copy. Frontispiece, 5 colour plates, and illustrations in the text by the author. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Beatrix Potter, Ap. 8 1942". Though unmarked as such, this copy was originally owned by Margaret Coward, a child who lived at Broomriggs Cottage in Near Sawrey, less than a mile from the author's Lake District home, Hill Top Farm. Potter bought the working farm in 1905 and lived there until her death in 1943, just a year after this copy was inscribed. Over the years, Potter gave many of her books to the villagers and their children. This is a later printing of the book originally published in 1930, in large format, and issued here in small format to match the rest of the Peter Rabbit series. Though this was the last of the Peter Rabbit books, it is one of Potter's earliest stories, written in 1883 at Ilfracombe. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Very Good Condition for this Rare Vintage book. Cover shows just minor wear: 1. sun-tanning strips on back cover; 2. mild abrasions of corners and spine ends, with small near-fraying at spine ends. Overall, front cover looks great. Hinges/binding tight. Age tanning of a few pages only...inside covers and end papers. Tanning at end of book due to insertion of approx. 20 rough figure sketches with V. Newman, Oct. 22, 1960 written at bottom (included). Previous owner of this book was Kathleen Turner, an artist from Northern California. Interior of book is like new, with no signs of use or wear. Highly Collectible. Art of this Century, New York, 1942. Hardcover. Yellow cloth, 156 pp., BW illus. Now a classic. "The purpose of this book is to serve as a catalogue to the permanent collection exhibited at ART OF THIS CENTURY. As most things change unexpectedly during the course of their development this catalogue has, to my great surprise, become an anthology of non-realistic art covering the period of 1910 to 1942. Its limitations are due to the fact that it contains only reproductions of paintings and sculpture owned by me. I do hope that the next edition will be more complete and that I shall be able to acquire several other important works that represent phases of the evolution of this art." (Peggy Guggenheim, p. 9) One of 2500 copies, complete with Max Ernst drawing on the front cover. approx. 7.75 x10 x5/8 inches. Very Good Condition for this Rare Vintage book. HARRY W. SNYDER
THE HUMP TAKORADI ROUTE, 1942. On offer is a sensational, historically significant manuscript and photographic relic of World War II service with the unusual and unique perspective of a 'blue collar' aviation machinist's mate who was employed by one of America's most important and key strategic resources: Pan American Airlines. Harry W. Snyder Jr. was an aviation machinist's mate for Pan American Airways - Africa, Ltd. He created and compiled an absolutely rare and detailed retelling of his work, service, travels and observations and Harry proves to be a sensational, keen eyed diarist. Adding further depth is a scrapbook filled with fascinating images. Of particular interest to historians and researcher to this vastly important historical niche of strategic resource relationships during WWII will understand Pan American's key involvement creating Pan American Airways - Africa, Ltd. in 1941 between. It flew materials and personnel from Miami to South America across the Atlantic to Africa where it crossed the Sahara Dessert onto the Middle East and British India where it flew over the Himalaya Mountains "The Hump" as it was called into China. Harry is in an inviable position to witness history: the diary riod when the United States was just beginning its African campaign. He begins writing in June as he leaves the states and then spends some brief time in South America. His entries begin June 24, 1942 with a final entry Dec 25, 1942. July 18, 1942. Copy no. 208 of final version of Twentieth Century-Fox movie script Life Begins at Eight-Thirty, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Nunnally Johnson. The light blue softbound 94-page typed script includes over fifteen blue revised pages (including the last page) and is secured by heavy duty brass brads. Originally released to performers on July 18, 1942, this copy of the script is in near fine condition, with clean and crisp pages. There is expected wear to the covers, including water stains and a partial loss to the film title stamped on the front. A small tear runs along the left corner of the perforated Stenographic Department receipt on front endpaper. The script is contained within a hunter green hard clamshell case, partly bound in cloth and leather, with gilt lettering on the spine. The case measures 10.375” x 12.375”.Life Begins at Eight-Thirty was a film screenplay written by Nunnally Johnson, with uncredited contributions by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and based on a play called “The Light of Heart” by Emlyn Williams. The movie centers around the relationship between an aging, alcoholic actor and his physically disabled but devoted daughter. The movie script includes dialogue but also stage and camera directions. The film’s title alludes to the time of evening when most theaters draw open their stage curtains and “life begins” for its actors.“KATHI: ‘But which would you honestly prefer, pop – tonight you have your choice, you know – eight-thirty and another drink with … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOXER Charles R.
1942. First edition, limited to 475 copies. 29 plates (2 folding). Text in Portuguese and English. Folio. Bound in later half-calf, original printed wrappers bound in, overall a very good copy. [iv], 231pp. Macau, Imprensa Nacional, Printed in two columns in both English and Portuguese, the work traces the history of Macao in the 17th century. It is divided into two parts: In the first Boxer translates/transcribes three accounts of Macao dating 1635 (Antonio Bocarro), 1637 (Peter Mundy), and 1638 (Marco de Avalo). In the second part Boxer deals with the Restoration of King Dom Joao IV (1641-1645) and his influence on Macao: Again a number of eye-witness accounts are given and each section is prefaced by a historical introduction. By focusing on primary sources by noted individuals Boxer achieves a high degree of authenticity and is able to paint a characteristically vivid picture of Portuguese activities in the Far East. The plates include views of Macao, as well as reproductions of historical documents. West 82. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Emery KELEN (1896 - 1978) - Alois DERSO (1888–1964).
[New York, probably early ], 1942. A small collection of proof states and unique 3D drafts for caricatures, concerning WWII in Yugoslavia, featuring powerful Anti-Hitler, Pro-Allied, Pro-Serbian Royalist messages; made in New York early in 1942 by Jewish expatriates from Hungary, Derso and Kelen. This unusual set of original 3D card drafts for printing plates and printed proof states of caricatures was made in New York during WWII. It is composed of 5 drafts on pink cards and 4 black and white impressions. These images, given to the Royal Yugoslavian Information Center in New York, present the Yugoslav royalist army of Chetniks as the main resistance against the Nazis in the occupied Yugoslavia, supported by the Americans. World War II in Yugoslavia was not only an Axis invasion of the country, but a multi-faceted civil war. One of the key players was the Chetniks, a monarchist, Serbian nationalist militia, led by Draža Mihailovi?, whose role in the conflict is incredibly complicated and remains controversial. Importantly, not all Chetniks were Serbs, some individuals from other nationalities, either due to their conservative convictions or to the wartime necessity of ‘picking a team’. In the end, the Chetniks made an alliance of convenience with the Germans to battle their mutual arch-nemesis, the Partisans, what would automatically make them the enemies of the Allies. The images are not dated, but were probably made in early 1942, after the U.S. joined World War II, but while the Chetniks were still considered to be the official Yugoslavian army resisting Nazi Germany. [REPUBLIC OF POLAND. MINISTRY OF FOREING AFFAIRS]. [Jan Karski]. - [INFORMING THE WEST OF THE HOLOCAUST]
1942. London, New York, Melbourne (printed in Great Britain), Published on behalf of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, (1943). 8vo. Stapled as issued. Title-page printed in red. A very fine, near mint, copy. 16 pp. ¶ The scarce first printing of this hugely important publication, which constitutes one of the very first official reports on Holocaust and one of the most accurate accounts that had been presented to the West, changing their knowledge of what was actually going on. It is made up of 1) Raczynski's account of the ongoing Holocaust, based among other reports, on the eye-witness-report by Jan Karski, a Polish Government emissary in occupied Poland, who bribed his way into a German concentration camp and witnessed the mass extermination of Jews, 2) the seminal "Joint Declaration" by members of the United Nations, in which "The above-mentioned Govenments and the French National Committee condemn in the strongest possible terms this bestial policy of cold-blooded extermination. They declare that such events can only strengthen the resolve of all free-loving peoples to overthrow the barbarous Hitlerite tyranny. They reaffirm their solems resolution to ensure that those responsible for these crimes shall not escape retribution, and to press on with the necessary practical measures to this end." (p. 12), 3) an extract of Deputy Prime Minister Mikolajczy's statement on behalf of the Polish Government, and 4) the text of Raczynski's broadcast of December 1942, in which pleaded for action, wishing to make the public and the Allied nations "understand how real is the tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chicago; 1942-1945: Philip Andrews Publishing. Quarto. Complete sets exist only in university libraries, here are 33 issues bound in 6 heavy duty bindings. These were, of course, the best unclassified works on military aviation and included enormous detail in the B-17, B-24 and B-25 issues. Articles by major generals and well-known aviation writer such as Martin Caidin, Willie Ley (on rockets), and many others. Since there was information shared by mechanics, there was material on the cutting edge that the Army Airforce decided was not to be classified; especially, in the later stages of the war. Many full page pictures of planes (some in color), and articles on vritually every topic of interest for those in the midst of World War II.

(WORLD WAR II SOLDIER ARCHIVE)
(WORLD WAR II SOLDIER ARCHIVE). 1942-5. An archive of twenty-nine autograph letters signed “Charlie” and written by an American soldier in World War Two. Charles H. Lawrence wrote home to his family in Chester, Vermont, mainly his brother Ray and his Aunt Florence. The archive includes one or two letters written before the war (around 1942), many from training camps, and a several from France, Belgium, and Germany. The training camps were mostly in the eastern United States, though there are a few from an unidentified camp that was probably in the United Kingdom. The camp letters discuss his training and life at camp, and they inquire about home, family, and friends. Many of them speak longingly of returning home, even just for a furlough. Even in camp, Lawrence clearly hated his experience. “…If I get back to the States after I leave you can bet I won’t stay in this army if I can help it…” The letters written from overseas include notations by the censor. A few were sent by V-mail. Lawrence’s troop saw action after D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. However, he generally asks about home and family, but sometime mentions the battles. Even when he mentions things like weather in Europe, his thoughts turn back home. “… I guess about 3 in fell in all. It makes me think of old VT. a lot to see the snow hanging on the trees et…”. One of the few examples of discussion of the war is as follows: “… I have been laying in a fox hole for two weeks now, the only time when we can get up and walk around is a night, it gets kinda tired laying in the fox hol … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Twentieth Century Fund, New York. Rubber stamped in red ink to otherwise blank FFE: "Review Copy / Release Date April 13, 1942 / Price $1.00 / The Twentieth Century Fund / 330 W. 42nd Street, New York." Dated 1942 to both title page and copyright page; no later dates. Dust jacket considerably age-browned to edges and spine; jacket is missing top 1/4-inch of spine. A book originally begun before Pearl Harbor, and indeed first published April 1942. On March 19, 2012, Tiffany Gabbay of the Web site theblaze wrote about "The Road We've Traveled," an Obama re-election campaign short film -- alternatively dubbed a piece of "docu-ganda" -- a fawning 17-minute account of what the filmmaker contends were the "community-organizer" president's accomplishments during his first term. Where did the title and theme for this mini propaganda masterpiece originate? Glenn Beck did some digging and found the answer in a book originally published in 1942. On his syndicated radio broadcast, Beck discussed the uncanny resemblance the Obama propaganda piece bore to the book "The Road We Are Traveling 1914-1942," written by FDR admirer Stuart Chase. The book envisions a much improved America once it's dispensed with free enterprise entirely. The post-war government Chase envisioned would provide every citizen with adequate food, housing, clothing, medical care and a job (while "congenital loafers" would be "cared for in sanitariums.") Chase was an American economist, MIT-trained engineer, and Fabian socialist -- an open admirer of the planned economy of the Soviet Union. Often credited with ori … [Click Below for Full Description]

I, else a very good set in the scarce dust jackets, some faint soiling, a few small chips, a couple of short closed tears, spine panels sunned. First edition, first impression, of the first collection of Hitler's speeches in English. This set is a presentation copy from the editor, with a loosely inserted slip on which is printed "Sent at the request of Norman H. Baynes, Esq". Professor Baynes was the recently retired professor of Byzantine studies at University College London, who spent his war years working in the foreign research and press service. His fully annotated volumes of Hitler's pre-war speeches, published when the Nazi empire was at its greatest scope and power, were intended to offer to his wartime audience a vision of the enemy which they were fighting, in his own terms. "It is well that those who detest the system should yet realise with what persuasiveness National Socialism can be presented" (from Lord Astor's foreword).

Franklin D. Roosevelt
This was the only major, successful agreement between the U.S. and Japan on supplies for POWs; the exchange point for the plan would be Vladivostok, Russia, as that nation was an ally of the U.S. but not at war with Japan This unpublished letter was acquired directly from the descendants of the recipient and has never been offered for sale During the course of World War II, the Japanese captured some 300,000 Allied prisoners of war. These prisoners found themselves in camps in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and other Japanese-occupied countries. The terms of the Geneva Convention were ignored by the Japanese who often made up rules and inflicted punishments at the whim of the camp commandant. The majority of prisoners were put to work in mines, fields, shipyards and factories on a diet of about 600 calories a day. Prisoners were rarely given fat in their diet and all were continuously hungry. The majority survived on barley, green stew, meat or fish once a month and seaweed stew. According to the findings of the post-war Tokyo Tribunal, the death rate of Western prisoners was 27%, seven times that of POWs held by the Germans and Italians. It was quickly clear that conditions in Japanese prisoner of war camps were awful, and efforts were made to try to visit the camps, and to send in mail and supplies. These were mainly conducted through the International Red Cross Committee via the Japanese Red Cross in Tokyo. The cumbersome methods, necessitated by war, of getting word to a belligerent that did not maintain the same close contact with the International Red Cross Committee at … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942], 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Fisher, M. F. K. HOW TO COOK A WOLF. Advance Review Copy. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. Plain unprinted white wrappers in dustwrapper. First Edition. 8vo., 261pp. A fine copy in a very good or better dustwrapper that is glued by the publisher to the spine & showing some rubbing there. A rare state of the author's third book; perhaps the only example to come to market in the last 25 years. Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf" in 1942, in the midst of World War II, just as food rationing programs were kicking into high gear with strict limits placed on basics like sugar, butter, meat, & coffee. War-time slogans encouraged American households to "make do, or do without." [Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf." as a reminder of the pleasure - the rapture - you could still find in food, even under a tight budget or war-time rationing. "I early on thought, as long as we have to eat to live, we may as well have fun doing it. There should be some enjoyment of food, as we do with making love, or keeping warm. It's one of the three basic needs of our lives," she said. "How to Cook a Wolf" reads like an issue of Lady's Home Journal, if the editorial staff were taken over by a philosopher with an empty stomach, a slightly tipsy poet and your mischievous, foxy godmother who once kept many lovers. Best lines include: "Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg, until it is broken." On cookin … [Click Below for Full Description]
