ROCKWELL, Norman
New York: U. S. Government Printing Office, 1942. Poster. Color lithograph. Image measures 28 x 40 inches. This original World War II-era poster shows a side profile of a soldier in the middle of shooting a water cooled machine gun in the darkness. It was produced as a work incentive on the home front. The poster is in very good condition and mounted on linen. Original folds slightly visible. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was an illustrator and painter and his subject matter and style came to epitomize American everyday life in the 20th century. This is a scarce poster and a classic Rockwell image.

Winston S. Churchill
Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1942. Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1942. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a beautiful limited edition of Churchill's famous address to Congress only weeks after Pearl Harbor, formerly owned by a contemporary U.S. Congressman. In the days after the Japanese attack, the United States formally entered the Second World War, marking the end of Britain's solitary stand against Hitler's Germany, which it had sustained since the fall of France. Churchill immediately decided to travel to the United States, and on the 12th of December 1941 he boarded the battleship Duke of York and began the 10-day trip across the Atlantic - a perilous journey at a time when German U-Boats plagued the North Atlantic. Churchill addressed the U.S. Congress on the 26th and the Canadian Parliament on the 30th. Churchill's speech to Congress was sober, resolved, and eloquently defiant, but of course also featured the sparkle of Churchillian wit, which was irrepressible even in the dark hours of the war: "I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way around, I might have got here on my own." His speech was also an important personal introduction to the elected leaders he needed to embrace and sustain the alliance so vital to his nation. This is one of 1,000 copies printed and has interesting provenance, having belonged to a U.S. Congressman serving at the time of Churchill's speech. The front pastedown bears the inked signature of "Karl Stefan, MC". Stefan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Weill, Kurt, Komponist (1900-1950).
New City, 30. V. 1942.. 6 SS. Folio. In schwarzer Tinte auf Notenpapier.. Vollständiges Manuskript seines Liedes "Song of the Free" nach dem Text von Archibald MacLeish "for Gertrude Lawrence as a token of my undying affection". - "Song of the Free" war eines von neun Liedern von Weill's Liederzyklus "Songs for the War Effort".

As chief recorder for the British Gramophone Company he knew Caruso, Tamagno, Patti, Melba, Paderewski, Kreisler, Nikisch, Toscanini, Walter, and all the other glamorous personalities of an age already legendary. Fisher, M. F. K
New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942 Fisher, M. F. K. HOW TO COOK A WOLF. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942. First Edition. Fisher, M.F.K. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. 8vo., light gray cloth decoration with wolf's head surrounded by vegetables stamped white at the upper cover & with titles stamped white at the spine. A fine copy [a bit of foxing at the spine], Contents fine & fresh, in a very good or better attractive price-clipped dustwrapper with some neatly executed professional conservation primarily at the extremities. Author's scarce third book, especially so in dustwrapper - nicely preserved. A very attractive copy. Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf" in 1942, in the midst of World War II, just as food rationing programs were kicking into high gear with strict limits placed on basics like sugar, butter, meat, & coffee. Tolkien, J R R
Allen & Unwin, London 1942 - Following the loss of the remaining 2nd Impression copies when the warehouse in which they were stored was destroyed by bombs, a third impression was published in during the dark days of 1942. This is one of those 1500+ copies, published with only the one full colour plate, the frontispiece 'The Hill : Hobbiton-across-the-Water' but all the original line illustrations and complete in 310 pages followed by a single leaf, undated publisher's advertisement to the rear. Bound in the original dark green illustrated and lettered, green cloth covered boards with map endpapers to front and rear. A neat inscription to the first free endpaper ‘To Jean Jean Xmas 1943 from Mummy & Daddy’. We can only imagine what pleasure this delightful book must have brought during those desperate days. In lovely condition, with slight marking to front board and front endpaper – these may even be production flaws as by this time shortages especially of paper were having serious effects on the quality of book, also very slight browning to extreme bottom corners of spine. Otherwise lovely, clean, bright and tightly bound and now protected in a full colour, facsimile 1st edition dust jacket. An attractive copy of this classic fantasy novel, now finding even more devotees thanks to the popularity of the film adaptation. Size: 7.5 inches tall by 5 inches. 310 pages. Surrealism - Ford, Charles Henri, Editor (Andre Breton, Nicolas Calas, Yves Tanguy, Benjamin Peret, Kurt Seligmann, Parker Tyler et al)
New York: View, 1942. New York: View, 1942. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good +/No. Early issue of this magazine devoted to American surrealism. Edited by Charles Henri Ford. Possibly the first issue to be printed in the non-newspaper format. A special issue with half of it printed in one direction and the other half printed upside down such that you have to flip it over to read it right side up. The only issue of this magazine we have seen in this format. A bright beautiful copy with some very light toning to covers. About as nice a copy as one is likely to find and one of the scarcest issues in the post-newspaper format.

Nin, Anais, American author (1903-1977).
[New York, June 1, 1942].. 6½pp. 8vo. With autogr. envelope.. To Samuel S. Goldberg, an attorney and friend of Nin and Henry Miller: "I wanted you to know the intimate truth underlying the question of the Press as you know the truth about all my life. It is a deeper issue at stake than appears on the surface, a question of liberation and conquering a problem which has consumed the greater part of my energy wastefully, - the until now unmastered art of facing reality and the perpetually harassing economic problem - As my analyst said today: if this happens I am free to do greater things. And who knows but what our freedoms are linked and may interact on one another? Anyway - it's a grave turning point - either I ascend from the dreamer's utter incapacity to cope with simple reality - and free myself and conquer with a push from you - or I fail and continue to fritter away my energy as other writers did in the past and present on the daily battle. This is a battle you have won because you have a sense of reality in this realm. Perhaps I may help you to win your battle with your dreams, about which I know a great deal. Sam, this is no trivial matter, but a turning point and for me a deep liberation. I hope it will come from you primarily because I feel you understand my life and my work and are participating in it. I want you to be conscious of the change in me and to have confidence in me. The first Press, as it was done was a dream, and not soundly constructed. Even though I produced 2 beautiful books, as it was, it could not survive. But meanwhile as you know, I awakened. D … [Click Below for Full Description]
