Mora, Jo J.
Jo Mora Publications, Monterey, CA 1942 - Color pictographic map. Image size 30 1/4" x 22 7/8". Printed on white paper, one of only 2,000 examples printed on this type paper; only a few examples are known to exist today. "This carte, in either variation, is among the rarest ones to find!" - Grandeau/Shorts "This map was dedicated to Charles F. Lummis, a 'buen amigo' of Jo's and a well-known Industriallist from Los Angeles, who foretold of the great Metropolis that LA would become. As shown in the map, the population in 1910 was only 50,000 people. Jo also included the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, who, like Jo, loved to draw animal figures with human clothes and traits." (Jon Gilmore) Only 2,000 copies were printed thus this image is considered to be one of the more scarce Jo Mora cartes. As with all his cartes, this one is packed with historical information and details, creatively and colorfully illustrated. (Grandeau & Shorts Cartes 10b; Gilmore M16) Fine condition; colors are striking, fresh and strong

Item (2) presents his service record noting in great detail his 1934 enlistment, training and service with the prestigious Royal Horse Guards of the Household Cavalry - the renowned " Blues " - based at Combermere Barracks , Windsor. This official document records Standring as being born in 1914 and now " a six foot fresh complexioned fair-haired blue eyed " chap " with a mole on his left shoulder blade". Through notes in various hands and official stamps permeating the document we observe that after a four year service with the revered Blues Regiment , Standring requests a discharge which enables him to enlist with Royal Air Force. His Colonel describes Standring in his discharge comments as " exemplary in military conduct. An exceptionally intelligent and industrious man". In May 1940 he is taken by the RAF " for duration of emergency " … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERLIN, Irving
n.p. [New York]: 1942. Small folio (9" x 12") bound in full "army khaki" flexible leather with gilt lettering on the front cover. Includes sheet music for 19 of Berlin's songs, including "This Is the Army, Mr. Jones" and "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning" from the Broadway musical that later toured the nation and the world and was made into a movie starring Ronald Reagan with much of the proceeds from all of its various guises donated to the U.S. Army. At the time of the original production, the U.S. Armed Forces were segregated; as a result of Berlin's insistence, the unit performing THIS IS THE ARMY became the only integrated company in uniform. Which leads to an interesting connection with the SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the great composer in this volume: "To Roy Lord/with gratitude/for helping to make/'This is the Army'/what it was in/the U.K. /Irving Berlin." General Roy[al] Lord was the chief of staff to General John C. H. Lee, nicknamed "Jesus Christ Himself" for his arrogance. Lee had a number of roles in World War II including commander of the supply services for the U.S. Army in the European Theater and General Eisenhower's deputy commander. It was at Lee's suggestion that Black troops were allowed to serve in combat for the first time in the war in the Battle of the Bulge after 50, 000 soldiers were killed or wounded in the first week of action. He received an Honor Roll of Race Relations from the New York Public Library's Schomberg Collection of Negro Literature for this action. Light rubbing to edges and spine with slight loss at the tips. Despite the light we … [Click Below for Full Description]

Siodmak, Curt
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. First Edition. First Edition. Fine in a bright, Near Fine dust jacket. SIGNED and humorously inscribed in the year of publication: first, Siodmak writes, "For Joyce, who, if she is as nice as her sister Ruth, she should better come to Hollywood. Curt Siodmak. Phone HO 6626 (If my wife answers, hang up and try again). 10 Sept 43." Next to this inscription, Siodmak's wife Henrietta writes, "[On] the contrary - I adore Ruth and I think I would be the same with you. Henrietta." Classic science fiction novel, told in diary entries, wherein an evil millionaire's brain is preserved for scientific purposes; but then, unsurprisingly, the brain begins to control the well-meaning scientist toward its own nefarious goals. Basis for two films: "The Brain" in 1962, and of course the classic "Donovan's Brain" in 1953. Curt Siodmak was the brother of the great film director Robert Siodmak, and had a great deal of success in his day as both a novelist and a screenwriter. An exceptional classic of this high spot, and a terrific inscription.

KAVANAGH, Patrick
Dublin, Cuala Press. 1942. - Limited edition; 8vo; original linen-backed blue paper boards and glassine dust jacket, upper cover lettered in black, paper label on spine. Edition of 250, this is number 17. One of the great achievements of twentieth-century Irish literature. Clair Wills in her study of Ireland during the Second World War, states that the poem'excoriates the spiritual, sexual and emotional poverty of rural Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. Kavanagh began the poem in 1941, while the Russian front was the main focus of the war. Wills believes that Kavanagh was drawing an analogy between the struggle of the Irish peasant and that of the Russian. Fine, with two spots to the edge of the text block in a good only jacket with loss to back panel. A nice copy of a scarce book.

Austin Tappan Wright
Farrar & Rinehart, New York, 1942. Light soiling to cream colored boards. Endpapers depicting maps in as new condition. Pages clean and bright. Green text block intact. Dust jacket has some wear to spine top and to bottom lower right. Tight binding. A very nice copy. First edition. Also has the "Reward" card that was issued with this book that is usually missing. A highly detailed Utopian fantasy that Wright labored over for years, only to have it posthumously published. The introduction is by Leonard Bacon, the afterward by Sylvia Wright, the author's editor & daughter. Generally considered a "utopian" novel, Islandia describes the journey and adventures of John Lang, a once very proper American college student. Austin Tappan Wright did not just write a novel of adventures in a strange land and civilization; Islandia is a country with a history, towns, cities and streets, its own geography, language, people (and demographics), politics, law and customs, even its virtues and faults. Thrasher (Mona)
1942. This framed canvas measures about 34 inches in height, about 28 inches wide. It is a portrait of an aged Inuit woman wearing a parka. Condition is very good - there is one small perforation in the upper part of the canvas, but it is not near to and does not affect the image. Mona Thrasher was born in 1942 in a bush camp between Aklavik and present day Inuvik. At a young age, a hunting accident left her partially deaf and mute. Mona is a self taught artist, with no formal training . At the age of 18, she was approached by Father Adam to paint the Stations of the Cross in the Roman Catholic Church in Inuvik (the Igloo Church). Even though she had never done such a large project, Father Adam knew she was capable. It took Mona just three months to paint all 14 Stations, which still hang in the church today. Since then she has created many paintings, mainly using the colours Blue and White because she believes they best represent the traditional Inuit life - the sky, water, snow and ice. She hopes that through her art, people get a better understanding of the North and its people.
