MORRIS, Wright
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. (1942). First. First edition. Fine in an attractive, near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with slight nicking at the crown. A pleasing copy of the author's elusive first book. Morris traveled cross-country by car several times in the 1920s and '30s, experiences which inspired this humorous novel of eight men and a boy who ride east from Los Angeles with no money and no certain purpose. .

Jacket with two small chips at the crown, gently toned spine and minor rubbing at the extremities, but on the whole presentable. This 1942 work by the famous detective novelist follows Chandler's most iconic character - Philip Marlowe - as he is hired by a wealthy client to recover a valuable gold coin. After "The High Window," though Chandler would continue to write novels he focused more on screenplay writing, including "The Blue Dahlia" and "Double Indemnity." "Raymond Chandler has given us a detective who is hard boiled enough to be convincing without being disgustingly tough and that is no mean achievement..." Babe Ruth
New York, Los Angeles, c. 1942 "Unique Display! Baseball Signed ?Babe Ruth,? ?Gary Cooper? (nominated for Best Actor Academy Award for role as Lou Gehrig), ?With appreciation / Eleanor Gehrig? (Gehrig?s widow), producer ?Sam Goldwyn,? director ?Sam Wood,? three-time Oscar winner ?Walter Brennan? (major role), Hall of Famer ?Bill Dickey? (played himself), and outfielder ?Babe Herman? (Cooper?s double in long shots). Later signed by Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle (signing just beneath Babe Ruth), Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Stan Musial, and Duke Snider, averaging 3/10 in strength. Spalding Official League Ball (most probably used in the filming) mounted on a ""Compliments of Christy Walsh/Pride of the Yankees"" blotter (text barely legible), indicating that the ball was a gift from the pioneer sports agent whose star clients included Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Babe Ruth?s signature exhibits 7/10 strength; Gary Cooper?s, right above the Babe, shows 2/10. The ball is deeply toned. It belonged to Frank Maher who has penned his name above Mrs. Gehrig?s inscription. Maher handled sound for the Oscar winning baseball biopic was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. The film's iconic line ?" ""Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth"" ?" was voted 38th on the American Film Institute?s list of 100 greatest movie quotes. Columbus Erdglobus:
Berlin - Lichterfelde: Columbusverlag Paul Oestergaard [1942 oder 1943].. . - Vgl. The author's first novel, it is not only a key work of California fiction, but it also had a profound effect on the life of the writer who would come to be most identified with Big Sur: Henry Miller. Miller read the book a few weeks after first coming to the area, and years later he wrote: "Till then I had been only a visitor. The reading of this 'little classic' ... made me more than ever determined to take root here." (Baird & Greenwood 2136) Signed by Author .

BARRAUD Maurice :
A. Gonin/L. Grosclaude, Lausanne/Zurich 3.1942].

SCHUMPETER, Joseph Alois
New York: Harper & Brothers,, [1942]. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. In a black solander box. An excellent copy in the bright jacket that has a few tiny nicks to extremities, spine a little sunned, and some loss to spine ends. First edition, extremely scarce with the dust jacket. Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy was Schumpeter's most important and controversial book, a philosophical analysis of economics and history in which he coined the term "creative destruction". Blaug, who calls this his masterpiece, notes that in this work, Schumpeter "paradoxically rejected the Marxian diagnosis of the imminent breakdown of capitalism and, at the same time, predicted the almost inevitable arrival of socialism as a result of the betrayal of capitalist values by the intellectuals of the western world" (Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 216).

Shahn, Ben
Washington, DC: GPO / Office of War Information, 1942. Folio broadside (38 x 28"; 97 x 72 cm scant). Printed by offset lithography in colors, with OWI/GPO imprint and date in extreme lower margin. Professionally linen mounted, lower margin with imprint retained, top and side margins trimmed. With signs of minor color fill at apexes of top folds, but otherwise a very good to fine, bright example. Rolled. An exceptionally powerful image, prepared by Shahn in response to the massacre at Lidice, depicting a shackled and hooded man against a brick wall, with the dated newswire report of the Lidice massacre superimposed over the figure, and the brilliant red caption: "This is Nazi Brutality." Shahn worked for the OWI from the Autumn of 1942 until the Summer of the following year, and although he produced a number of images for the agency, only two were actually utilized -- the others were dismissed as too violent, or as not sufficiently appropriate to the topic of the home front. Shortly thereafter, he began his work with the CIO-PAC.
