Steinbeck, John
New York: Viking Press, 1942. First edition, second state. Hardcover. A very good copy in blue cloth with light spine sunning, in a nearly fine dust jacket. This special copy is signed by the author on the front end paper in blue felt tip pen and with the 'Steinbeck Family' bookplate to the front pastedown. In this masterful tale set in Norway during World War II, Steinbeck explores the effects of invasion on both the conquered and the conquerors. HELEN KELLER
TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼? x 10 ½?. February 2, 1942. Westport, Connecticut. A typed letter signed ?Helen Keller? in purple pencil. She wrote to her friend Villa about the recent death of her husband Thurston: ?After some days absence from home I find your nephew?s letter on my desk. I cannot tell you how distressed and hurt I am over all that has happened to you. It seems like a dreadful dream, I cannot realize it yet with the vivid, happy mental picture I have always had of you and Thurston together. I can only grieve with you in that accumulates suffering and pray for your renewed strength. My lonely heart understands yours, and I know how you will feel in a home bereft of your beloved?s actual presence. But you have ever met fate with an unconquerable spirit, and as the darkness lifts from your inner sight, faith and memory will bring Thurston back to you, yes, even closer than was possible on earth. According to your brave philosophy he has gone on to encounter more wonderful adventures, to acquire greater knowledge and do higher good unto his fellow-creatures. But why should I write thus when words bring no comfort at such a time? Only to let you know that I am exceedingly with you in a loneliness and a struggle towards the Light which I too have experienced. Perhaps you will sometime glance at the booklet, ?We Bereaved? which I am going to send you. If it gives you even one soothing thought, I shall be thankful. Polly [Thomson] was as shocked as I was when Mr. Curren?s letter came, and she joins me in tenderest sympathy.? When Keller is common in letters, she is scarcer in lette … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRAPHICS & ORIGINAL ART - GREAT BRITAIN] WOODS, S. John
Unity Theatre (1942), London. London's Unity Theatre was organized in 1936; decidedly left-wing in outlook, it had ties to the Communist Party of Great Britain and to Victor Gollancz's Left Book Club Theatre Guild. The Theatre's annual satirical revues, which pioneered the use of such agitprop techniques as dramatic documentary (akin to the "Living Newspapers" of the Federal Theatre in the U.S.), improvisation, and audience participation, marked an important phase in the evolution of dramatic performance art in Great Britain. A really lovely early work by S. John Woods, noted for his film and travel posters (including several for London Transport) in the 1950s. Not found in the Unity Theatre archives at Southern Illinois University. Original lithographed poster, 54cm x 41cm (21" x 16"). Professionally matted and framed (not laid down) beneath UV-protective glass. Fine, unfaded example; Grade A. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

BRODOVITCH, Alexey
El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos, Washington, 1942. A brilliant design, clearly incorporating the surrealist influences that appeared in Brodovitch's work beginning in the late Thirties. This is one of a series of posters commissioned by the Office of Inter-American Affairs in the early years of World War Two, created specifically for Latin American distribution and intended to highlight President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Four Freedoms: Freedom from Fear, Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion. Other posters in the series were created by E. McKnight Kauffer, John Atherton, and Herbert Bayer. This is an extremely rare wall-size example from the series; the majority of those produced were window-card size. Pictured in Grunberg, Brodovitch (Abrams: 1989). Lithographed poster in four colors, 102cm x 70cm (ca. 40" x 27-3/4"). Several repaired marginal tears; tape adhesion and ink attribution at extreme upper margin; Grade B/B+. Archivally backed on linen. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Cronin, A. J
London: British Paramount, 1942. Cronin, A. J. HATTER'S CASTLE. 107 Original Double Weight key book stills from the infamous 1942 British Film Noir HATTER'S CASTLE based on the 1931 novel by A. J. Cronin. The film, made and distributed by British Paramount, was shot in England during the middle of WW2, few artifacts survive from the film, and finding another nearly complete set like this is a hard-to-imagine situation. The stills are all different, no duplicates, and the condition is uniformly VG-Fine with minor blemishes. The movie starred Robert Newton, a very young and beautiful Deborah Kerr, an equally young and handsome James Mason and Enid Stamp-Taylor who, although perhaps a long forgotten actress, is lovingly photographed here as befits her beauty. All double weight, all roughly 8 x 11, glossy originals with holes, as called for, to insert into 1942 "key book" publicity binders. Exceedingly rare survival.. Unbound. Near Fine.

Mann, Thomas, Schriftsteller und Nobelpreisträger (1875-1955).
Pacific Palisades, 5. August 1942.. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Mit ms. adr. Kuvert.. An Franklin Rouda von der Harvard University mit "e;some information about the chapters which puzzle you"e;: "e;You ask me whether the author is willing to vouch for the reality of the scene in question. Of necessity, the answer to that must be somewhat fluid and follow a middle course between yes and no which will perhaps not be to your liking. When I wrote those chapters of the Magic Mountain I was under the influence of personal experiences which I had had at the occultistic experimental sessions of the famous late occultist, Dr. Schrenk-Notzing in Munich. Personally, I have learned that there is something true and undeniable to the occult sphere which does not prevent me, however, from regarding it as spiritually uninteresting and unworthy of human exploration. I have expressed this attitude also in an essay wherein I give a detailed account of these experiences to which I have referred. The article is published in English under the title ,Experiences in the Occult' in a volume ,Three Essays', brought out by A. Knopf. The hero of my novel stumbles into this dubious atmosphere influenced by the rather unsympathetic figure of Dr. Krokowski, and you have seen how he finally reacts to it - with a certain moral indignation he interrupts the session and walks out. There may be something like a temporal television in what he has seen, namely, the vision of his cousin with the equipment of the then still imminent World War I, which I do not consider as theoretically altogether unthinkable [ ]&qu … [Click Below for Full Description]
