Associated Sales Co. / Nash Motors Company, 1942. Near Fine. Unbound. An archive of photographs and recordings related to New England Nash Motor Car Dealers. The collection includes of two framed black and white photographs, measuring 20" x 10" and 31.5" x 8", of Nash Dealers attending a "service clinic" in 1927 and a convention in 1941 along with a copy of a Nash Dramatized Selling Service kit consisting of a wooden carrying case covered in coarse woven cloth with a leather covered handle and three metal clasps housing 10 filmstrips (or "slidefilms") and seven 33 1/3 RPM records. Overall near fine with the photographs unexamined out of the lightly rubbed frames but both images sharp and unfaded though both with very light creases from once being rolled; the selling kit has a bit of wear to the exterior a touch of oxidation to the metal lids of a few of the filmstrips and two of the smaller records are a bit wavy. The first photograph, taken by "Glines & Slater" and dated January 19-20, 1927, shows a group of Nash Dealers standing outside a Nash Showroom located at 640 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston for a Nash Service Clinic with vehicles in the windows and workers inside looking out. The second photograph, dated August 28, 1940, captures a room full of dealers seated at tables in a large, many wearing paper hats, with a stage and musician to one side and a dais facing the stage on the opposite wall. While not as immediately eye-catching but certainly as interesting, is the Nash Dramatized Selling Service kit no. 3 for 1942. A small mimeograph sheet laid in explains: "This i … [Click Below for Full Description]

1942. Condition: Good. MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING Brother of Dave Fleischer Father of Director Richard Fleischer Awarded U.S. patent 1,242,674, "Method of Producing Moving Picture Cartoons," for the rotoscope, which allowed film footage of a live figure to be used as a guide for drawing an animated figure. [1917] According to his son, Richard, by the time he had directed "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954) for Disney, his father and Walt Disney had never met. According to Max's book, "Noah's Shoes," (1944) he held fifteen patents then being used in the Motion Picture Industry. Max produced some of the first war training films for the U.S. Army. Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: This self-effacing cartoonist and inventor was Walt Disney's only serious rival for many years. Like Disney, and many other pioneering animators, he started out as a newspaper cartoonist. A serious art student, he also had scientific knowledge and curiosity; while working as art director for Popular Science Monthly he devised the idea of creating animated cartoons by filming liveaction footage first, then tracing those movements one frame at a time. His brother Dave Fleischer donned a clown's costume and posed for Max's camera, and thus became the model for Koko the Clown. Max was awarded a patent for his invention, called the rotoscope, but was unable to sell the idea as a practical means of making movies because the work was too time-consuming. Eventually he and Dave realized that they could use the rotoscope as a tool to enhance their freehand work, and began producing Out of the Inkwe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sauk City, Arkham House, 1942. First Edition. First Impression. One of Smith's scarcer Arkham titles. One of 1,054 copies. A great Hannes Bok jacket. Russell, an active SF fan who was a writer and editor in his own right. The cards have some charming notes about ideas for writing. Russell apparently was an undercover FBI agent. Very good with wear to all jacket corners and spine tips, a couple of tears (~10mm), some reinforcement to the jacket interior with a label. Vertical crease to jacket spine. A decent copy. Cover art / illustrations by Hannes Bok [5771, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Huxley, Aldous
Harper & Brothers, New York, 1942. First edition of this classic work which details Huxley's experience with and views on the controversial Bates method, which according to him improved his eyesight. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "For Florence E. Knight cordially, Aldous Huxley 1942." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Included on the rear pastedown is a typewritten letter to Mrs. Margaret Darst Corbett (who assisted with the Bates Method) by Aldous Huxley as well as a Newsweek Article. In the preface to the book, Huxley describes how, at the age of sixteen, he had a violent attack of keratitis punctata which made him nearly completely blind for eighteen months, and left him thereafter with severely impaired sight. He managed to live as a sighted person with the aid of strong spectacles, but reading, in particular, was a great strain. In 1939 his ability to read became increasingly degraded, and he sought the help of Margaret Corbett, who was a teacher of the Bates method. He found this immensely helpful, and wrote "At the present time, my vision, though very far from normal, is about twice as good as it used to be when I wore spectacles, and before I had learned the art of seeing". Margaret Darst Corbett was an American vision educator who used the Bates Method for better eyesight. She became famous after her prosecution and acquittal on a charge of violating Californian law against the practice of medicine without a licence. Margaret Corbett met Dr. William H. Bates after consulting him about her husba … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHITE, E.B.
Harper & Brothers, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. Original green cloth. Near fine in good jacket. Book is sharp and bright with just trace shelfwear at spine tips and a bit of shelf-soil to top edge of text block. Jacket worn with some chipping and dampstaining (visible mainly from reverse, not effecting book); still presents well and retains original price. Near fine / good. First edition (stated) of one of White's greatest and most important books. Including much of White's best essays ("Once More to the Lake," etc.), ONE MAN'S MEAT was the book that caused Herald Tribume reviewer Irwin Edman to famously declare White, "one of our finest essayists, perhaps our only one." An unusually scarce book in its first edition (and uncommon even in later printings), odd given that the book was well-recieved and sold well. According to White biographer Scott Elledge, some 12,000 copies were sold between its 1942 and 1944 when the book proved so popular that a new and expanded edition was brought out. These initial sales, however, were spread across multiple printings (at least five) and produced under wartime conditions. Therefore, a (presumed) small initial printing published under a cloud of rationing and pessimism likely contributed to this title's apparent ephemerality. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

1942. As old as they look! Smoke free definitely Antique. Here is the true story of the life of these two very old books that I came to acquire through my husband's dad who shared with me the heart felt story of how he came to acquire them. A petite little woman barely 5 feet tall weighing 85 lbs on a good day lived far into the mountains of North Carolina in a tiny area called Pinnacle Mountain. She was raising 2 boys and 5 girls in a little shack on top of that mountain with no running water or electricity. Her children walked to school whenever they could attend. In the mountains it was not uncommon for children to go barefooted even in school and with 7 children to feed there was no money to spare so they walked to school barefooted or with potato sacks on their feet. Sometimes the oldest boy could not go to school because he was working on a farm or doing odd jobs to earn money for their family to survive on. Back then there was no divorce especially in the Bible Belt where religion was a way of life. In spite of that , there were plenty of "single mothers" up here in the mountains. Usually due to alcoholism and adultery or just flat out abandonment. I suppose the little old woman's man fit all of those. But the abandonment was intermittent. (SIMPSON, Louis)
Columbia University]. Near Fine. 10/1/2010. Four issues. Autumn 1941 - Winter 1942. Stapled wrappers. Some wear to the yapped edges with a remnant spot on the Autumn 1941 issue, overall near fine. These issues each feature several very early appearances by Louis Simpson, the 1964 Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, including possibly his first published poem. Simpson became involved with the magazine during his freshman year at Columbia, contributing prose stories, essays, and poetry. Eventually he became editor-in-chief under the guidance of faculty advisor, Mark Van Doren, himself a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1940. A nice collection of early writings from a prize-winning poet in training.

BRETON, Andre and Marcel Duchamp
Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies, Inc, 1942. First Edition. Wraps. Small 4to. Original yellow pictorial wraps designed by Marcel Duchamp. Near fine. Faint rubbing here and there. Some mild creasing to top corner of rear wrap. Else clean and sound. [48]pp. With a foreword by collector Sidney Janis, and an introductory essay ("Explorers of the Pluriverse") by art and drama critic R.A. Parker. Near fine. Handsome example of this catalogue from the first major exhibition of the Surrealists in the U.S. Held October 14th to November 7th, 1942 on the second floor of the Whitelaw Reid Mansion, the show was conceived by Breton and Duchamp - the title an allusion to the many expat and refugee artists featured in this exhibition, who fled the hostilities in Europe and settled in New York. Artists featured in the exhibition included Picasso, Arp, Miro, de Chirico, Magritte, Brauner, Tanguy, Ernst, Dali, Kay Sage, Kurt Seligmann, Leonora Carrington, Esteban Frances, Matta, Joseph Cornell, David Hare, Robert Motherwell, Barbara Reis, Lawrence Vail, Matisse (!?) and others. The catalogue was also designed by Duchamp and featuries his famous die-cut "bullet" hole cover on the front, with a counterintuitively titled rear. A classic catalogue from an important exhibition.
