Cecil Beaton. London 1942 - An exceptional Beaton print signed both by the sitter and the photographer. A contemporary gift from the Duke to a serving RAF officer. Full provenance. George, Duke of Kent, was the King's brother and uncle to the present Queen Elizabeth.         Go Down, Moses

1942. First Edition . FAULKNER, William. Go Down, Moses. New York: Random House, (1942). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First trade edition, first issue, of FaulknerÂ’s masterpiece of interrelated short stories, with the first book appearance of “The Bear.”Go Down, Moses “was a landmark volume for FaulknerÂ… Here we have the Southern dilemma, and Faulkner has transformed it into the American” (Karl, 665-67). “So committed was Faulkner to the expansive possibilities of the short story form that in Go Down, Moses he created what he always insisted was a novel composed entirely of interrelated stories previously published separately” (Gelfant, 252). One of the most acclaimed stories, “The Bear,” had appeared, in abbreviated form, in the Saturday Evening Post the same year (Brodsky 229); the coming-of-age tale remains one of FaulknerÂ’s most anthologized. A contemporary review in the Boston Globe said of all the stories that they “represent William Faulkner at his best. Which is equivalent to saying the best we have.” First issue, in black cloth with the top edge stained red. Stated “First Printing.” Both the trade and rare signed limited copies of this book are from the same printing. Brodsky 232-234. Petersen A23.2b.         Fort Hood Photo Archive

1942. (WORLD WAR II). Photographic archive of Fort Hood Opening Day. Killeen, Texas: U.S. Army Signal Corps, 1942. Oblong folio (11 by 14 inches), 90 leaves of cardstock, each with gelatin silver black-and-white or sepia-toned photographic print on glossy paper stock affixed (88 measuring 8 by 10 inches, 2 measuring 4 by 6 inches), ring-bound; 12 additional photographic prints (9 on glossy paper stock, 3 on matte; each measuring 8 by 10 inches) laid in loose. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $4500.Vintage archive of 102 black-and-white and sepia-tinted photographic prints (90 mounted on thick card stock, another dozen loose) documenting the September 1942 opening ceremonies of the United States ArmyÂ’s groundbreaking tank destroyer training center at Camp Hood, with numerous intriguing views of anti-tank artillery, troop exercises and Army officials and important visitors from Washington, D.C. and Hollywood. A unique, visual primary source of American military history. In 1942, while World War II raged, the United States Army developed 108,000 acres of central Texas farm land into Camp Hood, later Fort Hood. The new base became home to a tank destroyer tactical and firing center and some 38,000 troops (a figure that would swell to almost 95,000 in less than a year). The Army designed Camp Hood to house its newly created Tank Destroyer battalions: mobile anti-tank guns on armored half-tracks to combat Nazi Germany's Panzers, which had overrun so much of Europe. Generals Andrew D. Bruce and Lesley J. McNair (both pictured in several of the photographs in this album) organized the units, quickly training ""scores of officers and men,"" as the New York Times reported, ""in the tough business of 'tank busting'Â… The mission of the tank destroyer is best epitomized by the motto the new battalions have adopted, 'Seek, attack, destroy!'"" This remarkable archive of vintage photographs documents the ceremonies marking the base's opening day, September 18, 1942. Highlights include the presentation of colors and the review of troops; inspections of such equipment as .30 caliber machine guns, the 37 mm tank gun towed by a Jeep, 75 mm guns mounted on the M3 GMC and M10 GMC half-tracks, and M2A4 Light Tanks; practical demonstrations of the quarter-ton reconnaissance car, Molotov cocktails and ""Sticky Bomb"" grenades (the latter improvised from dynamite, nitroglycerin and GI socks), trench warfare and unarmed combat; mock Nazi villages and simulated Japanese formations that served to simulate tank hunting under actual combat conditions; the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps detachment; Fort Hood's military personnel as well as visiting officers and government dignitaries; and several photographs of Hollywood starlets and popular pin-up subjects Anne Gwynne, Martha O'Driscoll and Joan Blondell, as well as Miss America 1942, Jo-Carroll Dennison (shown playing with the 899th Tank Destroyer battalion's puppy mascots, visiting with Will Rogers, Jr., and firing a Tommy Gun). Neat manuscript ink annotations and ruling to leaf margins. Some photographs with previous, unobtrusive hole-punches at edges.Occasional closed tears to leaves, not affecting mounted photographs. Light curling to loose photographs. A unique and engrossing archive of vintage photographs, depicting a significant development in America's military might.

        Commemorative photo album

1942. First Edition . (STEINMETZ, Charles Proteus) STEINMETZ MEMORIAL FOUNDATION. Commemorative photo album presented to Comfort A. Adams who delivered the Fifteenth Steinmetz Memorial Lecture. [Schenectady, New York: Steinmetz Memorial Foundation, 1942]. Quarto, brad-bound as issued, original full brown sheep gilt, watered silk endpapers. $4200.Commemorative album created in honor of acclaimed scientist Charles Steinmetz by the Steinmetz Memorial Foundation, with 41 full-page second-generation gelatin silver prints including portraits of Steinmetz, images of Steinmetz with Edison and Einstein, and scenes from Steinmetz’s life, presented to electrical engineer Comfort A. Adams who delivered the 15th Steinmetz Memorial Lecture “Cooperation Versus War” in 1942.This commemorative album was produced by the Steinmetz Memorial Foundation and contains 41 full-page images from the life of Charles Steinmetz. Steinmetz, a German Jew, was born with dwarfism, hip dysplasia, and was also a hunchback. Though these challenges would have proves life-limiting—if not life-ending—for many born in the middle of the 19th century, Steinmetz instead excelled. He became known for his aptitude in math and physics, his own knowledge exceeding that of his teachers. However, by the time he was in university, his involvement in socialist causes had come to the attention of the authorities and his academic prowess proved to be no protection. Steinmetz fled to Zurich and then to America. Steinmetz’s work in America proved groundbreaking, especially in electrical engineering. GE, through buying a company that he worked for, took full advantage of his accomplishments. Steinmetz himself eventually secured over 200 patents. His work brought him into contact with other scientific luminaries including Albert Einstein and, on several occasions, with Thomas Edison. Indeed, pictures of Steinmetz with both Einstein and Edison are featured in this album. By 1922 (a year prior to his death), Steinmetz gave up on socialism, at least as part of America’s future, a decision that probably saved his legacy. “Steinmetz must be regarded as one of the fathers of electrical engineering, and his work symbolizes the fruitful interaction between mathematics, science, and practical engineering. He made outstanding contributions to the field, and his influence was transmitted not only by his discoveries and inventions, but also by his writings. Much of the methodology of modern circuit theory was developed and became widely known through his textbooks. His successful experience with GE encouraged other companies to become involved in basic research, which was a new departure in American industrial thinking. Finally, his was a true ‘rags to riches’ story that has been an inspiration to immigrants, to those affected with a physical disability, and to those whom society would dismiss as ‘non-conformists”(ANB). This book was presented to American electrical engineer Comfort A. Adams, who made great contributions in areas including the steel industry and commercial welding. “Adams was much recognized during his career. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He delivered the inaugural Adams Lecture for the American Welding Society and received its Samuel Wylie Miller Medal. In 1944 he received the American Institute of Electrical Engineer’s Lamme Medal both for his work in the theory and design of alternating-current machinery and for his work in welding. Perhaps his most prestigious award was the Edison Medal in 1956 for ‘pioneering achievements in the development of alternating current electric machines and in electrical welding; for vision and initiative in the formation of an engineering standards organization and for eminence as an educator and consulting engineer” (ANB). With The Story of Steinmetz, a GE promotional booklet that shares many of the images from this album, laid in.Interior fine, a bit of light restoration to binding. Extremely good condition.

        Le Mythe de Sisyphe

Paris: Gallimard, 1942 First edition, "service de presse" review copy. Original wrappers and rare such. When this book does turn up, it's usually been rebound. One of Camus's three giant works (L'Etranger and La Peste). An excellent copy - some spots of rubbing, edge spots, bit of light wear else a fine, rare copy. A consequential book of the 20th century and a personal favorite.********* Camus believes that the world is absurd, that we are born by chance, live by encounter, and die by accident. Although we crave happiness on earth and immortality after death, the disproportion between desire and fulfillment defines the absurd. An absurd world is a world without necessity, without purpose, and without essence. Whatever meaning it has, we ourselves have to provide it. Existentialists believe that, because there is no a priori morality, men's choices and actions fill the void that was left by the disappearance of God. However, says Camus, man's forlornness should not be construed as a source of despair. On the contrary, God's death should be viewed not as tragedy but as a liberation, and it is this newly found freedom that gives men and women the strength to invent themselves. In an absurd world all choices are possible, even suicide.(Stoltzfus)

Collection of maps and documents relating to El Alamein, service with the Arab Legion, etc.

Collection of documents relating to services in North Africa during the Second World War, retained within Salmon's folding canvas mapcase with acetate viewing panels. Overall very good. Fascinating collection of documents relating to the Second World War services of Major John Salmon. Salmon served in the Western Desert with the 47th Royal Tank Regiment, and subsequently with the Arab Legion. Importantly the contents include three maps of the El Alamein area, one, 1:100,000 Egypt, Western Desert, Sheet 5N, El Alamein, with field markings and two post-battle contiguous sheets - "Outline Dispositions and Objectives on the Night of 23/24 October 1942", "Reproduced and Printed by 524 (Pal.) C. Fd. Svy Coy R.E. Dec. 1942 from a tracing by H.Q. 13 Corps" - together with a and a roneoed document "Notes for Visitors to the El Alamein Battlefield"; a small group of service papers including a temporary commission in the army of the Trans-Jordan signed by the emir, Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, a 1:750,000 map of the Trans-Jordan, 1943, and 1:250,000 Palestine, North Sheet, 1943. ; a studio portrait of Salmon with some group portraits of Salmon's squadron 47 RTR, together with a number snapshots taken in the desert. Attractively presented grouping relating to this legendary battle which was fought near the western frontier of Egypt between 23 October and 4 November 1942. The Second Battle of El Alamein was the climax and turning point of the North African campaign. The Axis army of Italy and Germany suffered a decisive defeat by the British Eighth Army, which, in combination with the Allied landings of Operation TORCH in French Morocco and Algeria, led to the final destruction of Axis forces in North Africa, also establishing the reputation of Lieut.-Gen. Bernard Law Montgomery, later Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.

SLOVENIAN COMMUNIST PARTY NEWSPAPER:] Delo. Organ centralnega odbora Komunisti?ne partije Slovenije. No. 5. [Labour.Newspaper of the Central Committee of the Comunist Party of Slovenia. No. 5]

[Ljubljana], November . 1942 - 8°: 34 pp., original wrappers with illustrated cover printed in red, stapled (Very Good, staples slightly soiled, tiny tears in the lower margin). The final wartime issue of the most famous Slovenian Partisan newspaper, ‘Delo’, printed by an underground press in Italian-occupied Ljubljana, with a magnifcently illustrated cover. - This newspaper was issued by an underground Partisan press in Italian-occupied Ljubljana, and provided eagerly awaited information from the war front and abroad, as well as articles on Communism, mixed with stories for the common people. Še paper was named Delo (Labour), a popular Communist theme. Notably, the present issue features an exquisite and well known cover printed in red, depicting a young, smiling Partisan with a machine gun in hand, followed by common people carrying Soviet and Yugoslav flags. Šis cover is one of the most celebrated images of World War II in Yugoslavia. Šis edition is also the last issue of Delo to be printed before the end of the war. After the war, the much beloved Delo was revived and printed as a daily, and is still today one of Slovenia’s major papers. Returning to wartime Delo, the various issues were printed at different clandestine printing shops in Ljubljana during the Italian occupation, a city which was soon surrounded by a cordon of barbed wire to prevent its citizens from communicating with the Partisans. The quality of the printing is usually high for clandestine publishing operations. This is due to the fact that the main purpose of these presses was to forge Italian documents and food coupons for the Partisans and their spies. From September 1941 to July 1942, some issues of Delo were printed by the Submarine (Podmornica) press, hidden in a hole, dug in the loamy grounds under a private house in the suburbs of Ljubljana. The entrance to the printing offce was through the moveable door of the restroom of the house. Še press had to close down after the Italians placed their barbed wire fence right in front of the house, so separating it from the city of Ljubljana. The Tunnel (Tunel) press, active between February and July 1942, printed issues of Delo. It was located in the centre of Ljubljana, above a small cork factory. The press was set in a small 3 x 1.5 m (9.8 x 4.9 feet) tunnel-like room, accessible only through a 0.5 m (1.6 feet) high movable piece of wall, which was further disguised by a decorative wall painting. The press had to close down due to its difficulty of accessibility. Some editions of Delo were issued by the Tone Tomši? press (named after a Partisan who was shot by Italians in May 1942), which operated from August 1942 to March 1943. The printing shop was hidden in a secret room behind a bookbinder’s shop, right next to the main Italian police station of Ljubljana. The entrance was through a moveable bookshelf, and a warning red light for danger in the printing shop was connected to the electric pot for cooking glue in the bindery out front. The press thrived until the Italian police detected it.         Two snapshot photograph albums compiled by a RAF officer.

Syria/Lebanon: , 1942?43. 2 volumes, landscape quarto (259 x 337 mm). Contemporary black heavily embossed soft leather, covers blind stamped overall with Egyptian iconographic panels (central panel of a view of pyramids), black cord ties. Over 350 original small format photographs (generally ranging in size between 90 x 60 and 63 x 42 mm), corner-mounted on both sides of heavy stock grey-brown card (with glassine guards), captioned throughout in white ink. Bindings a little rubbed, a few glassine guards a little creased but in excellent condition overall. A wide-ranging collection of very good quality photographs - well-maintained and extensively captioned - taken by an RAF officer serving in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq during 1942-43, smartly presented in two locally purchased albums. The brief - and recently concluded - Syria-Lebanon Campaign of June-July 1941, also known as Operation Exporter, saw British, Australian, Indian and Free French forces drive the Vichy French out of that region. A contemporary account in Time magazine (23 June 1941) described the operation's opening in memorable terms: "The first eight days of the British-Free French drive for Vichy-held Syria were a weird combination of Blitz and bicker, glad-handing and heavy punching, pushover and furious resistance. Australian bayonets were sheathed; Royal Navy guns blasted. Opposing Frenchmen kissed or killed each other". The first album is the more extensive of the two, containing 218 images, and opens with a Christian Lebanese wedding at Bsmara, local scenes and views of the officers' mess there; Beit-Méry and Baalbek; several pages given over to Aleppo (the Citadel, the Halawi mosque, carpet manufacture); Nerab; Damascus (including the Tekkiye and Omayyyid mosques); Markab (views of the camp, "boating on Lake Habbaniya", football teams, the canteen at Christmas 1942, several scenes from the unit show); concluding with Habbaniya, an important RAF base in Iraq, Khadimain and Baghdad. The 148 photographs of the second album very much focus on tourist locations in South Africa, Cairo, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, Haifa, Sidon, returning to Lebanon with scenes at Beirut and Tripoli. As no aircraft are pictured in either of the albums, we believe that the unidentified RAF officer may well have served in an intelligence-gathering capacity, possibly serving with a Wireless Unit at a number of Y-stations in the Middle East. Y-stations were RAF signals intelligence collection sites and No. 6 was located at Nerab near Aleppo (of which there are a number of scenes in the first album). "By now (i.e. late 1943) there were Y-stations all across the Mediterranean theatre, from Algiers in the west, to Aleppo in Syria, taking in Tunisia, Malta, Sicily, Calabria, Benghazi, Cairo and Alexandria on the way" (Jackson & Haysom, Covert Radar and Signals Interception, 2014). A very engaging glimpse of life behind the lines in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and of one British officer's obvious fascination with the life, culture and history of the Middle East.

        First Papers of Surrealism.

New York: Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies, Inc.,, 1942. Small quarto. Original stapled yellow pictorial perforated wrappers, green endpapers. Slight surface ribbing down spine and to corners, but an exceptional copy. First edition, MOMA Director Monroe Wheeler's copy, of this exhibition catalogue of the First Papers of Surrealism exhibition, with the bullet-hole wrappers designed by Duchamp. This copy has the ink ownership inscription of MOMA Director Monroe Wheeler dated October 1942, in the month that the exhibition opened. Wheeler was Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and almost certainly would have been in attendance at the exhibition's opening. Indeed, the museum is thanked for the loan of some exhibits. The exhibition was organised by André Breton and "his twine" Marcel Duchamp; it was held in New York between 14 October and 7 November 1942. It included paintings and sculptures by more than 30 artists, and featured Duchamp's famous "mile of string" installation, festooning the venue, the Whitelaw Reid Mansion, with a tangled web of twine. The title of the exhibition derived from the application for American citizenship - immigrants had to file a declaration of intention, also called first papers, in which they renounced allegiance to foreign governments; many surrealists like André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst had fled Europe with the outbreak of World War II.
