An important WWII document signed by Leonid Brezhnev, from the high point of German penetration of the Soviet Union, recommending a comrade for promotion

[Baku?], December 22, 1942. 8.25" x 11.25". "Typed Document Signed, ""Brezhnev"" as Deputy Dead of Political Administration for the Southern Front, 1 page, 8.25"" x 11.25"", [Baku?], December 22, 1942, in Russian: a recommendation of Roman Yeliseyevich Vuldovich for a promotion. Most typed lines underlined in orange pencil, pin holes and minor tears along left margin do not affect text, light even toning, else very good. Brezhnev writes in full (translated): ""Comrade VULDOVICH has been participating in the war since October of 1941. Before being drafted into the army, he performed managerial and administrative work for some time, serving as the First Deputy Chairman of the Odessa Regional Council of Workers’ Deputies from 1938 through September of 1941. Until September of 1942, he worked for the Military Council Task Force. Since he had a great deal of experience in managerial and business administration work, the Group’s Military Council permitted him to assume the position of Deputy Head of Political Affairs of the Group’s Logistics Section in December of 1941. Over the course of his practical work, Comrade VULDOVICH has shown himself to be an experienced, well-trained worker who sees the big picture, is a self-starter, and is an energetic and diligent political worker. During unit visits, he properly and seriously approaches the elimination of the deficiencies he detects. He is disciplined and exacting with respect to his subordinates. He enjoys well-deserved prestige."" Following the Second World War, Brezhnev was installed as General Secretary for the region of Dnipropetrovsk before becoming a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. In 1952, Stalin appointed him to the Central Committee of the Communist Party. A protégé of Nikita Khrushchev (the two first met during the Second World War serving on the Southern Front together), Brezhnev would rise to great prominence following the death of Stalin. Ironically, he would help lead the push to remove Khrushchev from power in the early 1960s. "

Hakubutsushi ; zuihitsu shashin (Records of Nature: Essays and Photographs)

(Genkosha), (Tokyo) 1942 - Quarto (10 1/4 x 7 1/2"). [2], 141, [3]pp. Original red-lettered illustrated dust-jacket over silver-lettered tan cloth. Title page in orange and black lettering. Book housed in its original printed cardboard slipcase, itself housed in a later olive cloth slipcase. Scarce and unusual work by Onchi Koshiro (1891-1955), a noted Japanese print-maker, photographer, and one of the fathers of the Sosaku-hanga movement* in the early decades of 20th-century Japan.Lavishly illustrated throughout with 107 b/w in-text photographic reproductions, "Hakubutsushi" (Records of Nature: Essays and Photographs) is a stunning tour de force, as it shows the author's incredible ability to see abstract and surreal beauty in the natural environment. The first 83 pages show photographs of various plants, followed by photographs of insects, reptiles, fishes, birds, cats and cows (pp. 84-130), and ends with pictures of animals in a zoo (pp.131-139). Some of the stark close-up portraits of plants are reminiscent of Karl Blossfeldt's work.Original cardboard slipcase sunned. Light water-staining along joints and spine of dust-jacket. Upper corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in Japanese. Modern slipcase in very good, original slipcase in good-, dust-jacket in good- to good, binding and interior in very good condition. * Sosaku-hanga ( "creative print") was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan. It stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principles of art that is "self-drawn" ( jiga), "self-carved" ( jikoku) and "self-printed" ( jizuri). As opposed to the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor, creative print artists distinguished themselves as artists creating art for art's sake.         Constructive Income Taxation

1942. First Edition . Signed. FISHER, Irving and FISHER, Herbert W. Constructive Income Taxation. A Proposal for Reform. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1942. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $3200.First edition, presentation copy, of this book offering a proposal for a new income tax system based on the idea of taxing only “real” income, inscribed by Fisher to a fellow prominent American neoclassical economist and one of his most famous rivals: “To Professor Frank A. Fetter with the compliments and high esteem of Irving Fisher. April, 1943,” in scarce original dust jacket. In this work, Fisher and Fisher offer a persuasive proposal for an income tax system under which money would only be considered income if it was available to the taxpayer, thereby encouraging, above all, saving. Of course, their conception of saving takes various forms, but the idea is for the taxpayer to provide their own security and for the government to encourage that by removing taxation from all funds channeled into the sorts of saving behaviors it endorses. During the war era, with its attendant privation, this sort of do-it-yourself thriftiness made the plan a subject of much interest. Considered “the father of monetary economics” (Pressman, 91), “Irving Fisher was, in the opinion of many, the leading economic theorist in the United States during the first half of the 20th century” (ANB). The man to whom this book was inscribed, Frank Fetter, was an American economist from the Austrian School. His primary work, The Principles of Economics, was responsible for greatly increasing AmericaÂ’s fascination with the Austrian School. His treatise introduced an entire generation to economists including Böhm-Bawerk, von Wieser, von Mises, and Hayek. Fetter was known for his opposition to MarshallÂ’s ideas on land as capital. His reassessment of those ideas have been credited with prompting mainstream economists to abandon the Georgist idea of land as a unique factor of production and the need for a special theory of ground rent. Instead, Fetter supporter a subjective theory of value. He believed in the importance of time preference and criticized Irving Fisher for moving away from the pure time preference theory that he had espoused in The Rate of Interest (1907). This led to a famous (though cordial) feud between the economists. They were, despite their disagreements, both considered to be “neoclassical” economists and they were both American. They had both been signatories on a petition urging Hoover to veto the Smooth-Hawley Tariff Bill, for example. When it came to broad matters of economics they were collegial and, at times, even in complete agreement. Fetter is nevertheless named here on page 215 in the Appendix to Chapter 8 as one of the economists opposed to the ideas outlined within the chapter. Owner signature.Book about-fine, scarce dust jacket very good with wear to extremities and tiny stain and a bit of toning to spine. A most desirable copy, rare with inscription and association.

        Go Down, Moses

1942. First Edition . FAULKNER, William. Go Down, Moses. New York: Random House, (1942). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First trade edition, first issue, of FaulknerÂ’s masterpiece of interrelated short stories, with the first book appearance of “The Bear.”Go Down, Moses “was a landmark volume for FaulknerÂ… Here we have the Southern dilemma, and Faulkner has transformed it into the American” (Karl, 665-67). “So committed was Faulkner to the expansive possibilities of the short story form that in Go Down, Moses he created what he always insisted was a novel composed entirely of interrelated stories previously published separately” (Gelfant, 252). One of the most acclaimed stories, “The Bear,” had appeared, in abbreviated form, in the Saturday Evening Post the same year (Brodsky 229); the coming-of-age tale remains one of FaulknerÂ’s most anthologized. A contemporary review in the Boston Globe said of all the stories that they “represent William Faulkner at his best. Which is equivalent to saying the best we have.” First issue, in black cloth with the top edge stained red. Stated “First Printing.” Both the trade and rare signed limited copies of this book are from the same printing. Brodsky 232-234. Petersen A23.2b.         Fort Hood Photo Archive

1942. (WORLD WAR II). Photographic archive of Fort Hood Opening Day. Killeen, Texas: U.S. Army Signal Corps, 1942. Oblong folio (11 by 14 inches), 90 leaves of cardstock, each with gelatin silver black-and-white or sepia-toned photographic print on glossy paper stock affixed (88 measuring 8 by 10 inches, 2 measuring 4 by 6 inches), ring-bound; 12 additional photographic prints (9 on glossy paper stock, 3 on matte; each measuring 8 by 10 inches) laid in loose. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $4500.Vintage archive of 102 black-and-white and sepia-tinted photographic prints (90 mounted on thick card stock, another dozen loose) documenting the September 1942 opening ceremonies of the United States ArmyÂ’s groundbreaking tank destroyer training center at Camp Hood, with numerous intriguing views of anti-tank artillery, troop exercises and Army officials and important visitors from Washington, D.C. and Hollywood. A unique, visual primary source of American military history. In 1942, while World War II raged, the United States Army developed 108,000 acres of central Texas farm land into Camp Hood, later Fort Hood. The new base became home to a tank destroyer tactical and firing center and some 38,000 troops (a figure that would swell to almost 95,000 in less than a year). The Army designed Camp Hood to house its newly created Tank Destroyer battalions: mobile anti-tank guns on armored half-tracks to combat Nazi Germany's Panzers, which had overrun so much of Europe. Generals Andrew D. Bruce and Lesley J. McNair (both pictured in several of the photographs in this album) organized the units, quickly training ""scores of officers and men,"" as the New York Times reported, ""in the tough business of 'tank busting'Â… The mission of the tank destroyer is best epitomized by the motto the new battalions have adopted, 'Seek, attack, destroy!'"" This remarkable archive of vintage photographs documents the ceremonies marking the base's opening day, September 18, 1942. Highlights include the presentation of colors and the review of troops; inspections of such equipment as .30 caliber machine guns, the 37 mm tank gun towed by a Jeep, 75 mm guns mounted on the M3 GMC and M10 GMC half-tracks, and M2A4 Light Tanks; practical demonstrations of the quarter-ton reconnaissance car, Molotov cocktails and ""Sticky Bomb"" grenades (the latter improvised from dynamite, nitroglycerin and GI socks), trench warfare and unarmed combat; mock Nazi villages and simulated Japanese formations that served to simulate tank hunting under actual combat conditions; the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps detachment; Fort Hood's military personnel as well as visiting officers and government dignitaries; and several photographs of Hollywood starlets and popular pin-up subjects Anne Gwynne, Martha O'Driscoll and Joan Blondell, as well as Miss America 1942, Jo-Carroll Dennison (shown playing with the 899th Tank Destroyer battalion's puppy mascots, visiting with Will Rogers, Jr., and firing a Tommy Gun). Neat manuscript ink annotations and ruling to leaf margins. Some photographs with previous, unobtrusive hole-punches at edges.Occasional closed tears to leaves, not affecting mounted photographs. Light curling to loose photographs. A unique and engrossing archive of vintage photographs, depicting a significant development in America's military might.

        Commemorative photo album

1942. First Edition . (STEINMETZ, Charles Proteus) STEINMETZ MEMORIAL FOUNDATION. Commemorative photo album presented to Comfort A. Adams who delivered the Fifteenth Steinmetz Memorial Lecture. [Schenectady, New York: Steinmetz Memorial Foundation, 1942]. Quarto, brad-bound as issued, original full brown sheep gilt, watered silk endpapers. $4200.Commemorative album created in honor of acclaimed scientist Charles Steinmetz by the Steinmetz Memorial Foundation, with 41 full-page second-generation gelatin silver prints including portraits of Steinmetz, images of Steinmetz with Edison and Einstein, and scenes from Steinmetz’s life, presented to electrical engineer Comfort A. Adams who delivered the 15th Steinmetz Memorial Lecture “Cooperation Versus War” in 1942.This commemorative album was produced by the Steinmetz Memorial Foundation and contains 41 full-page images from the life of Charles Steinmetz. Steinmetz, a German Jew, was born with dwarfism, hip dysplasia, and was also a hunchback. Though these challenges would have proves life-limiting—if not life-ending—for many born in the middle of the 19th century, Steinmetz instead excelled. He became known for his aptitude in math and physics, his own knowledge exceeding that of his teachers. However, by the time he was in university, his involvement in socialist causes had come to the attention of the authorities and his academic prowess proved to be no protection. Steinmetz fled to Zurich and then to America. Steinmetz’s work in America proved groundbreaking, especially in electrical engineering. GE, through buying a company that he worked for, took full advantage of his accomplishments. Steinmetz himself eventually secured over 200 patents. His work brought him into contact with other scientific luminaries including Albert Einstein and, on several occasions, with Thomas Edison. Indeed, pictures of Steinmetz with both Einstein and Edison are featured in this album. By 1922 (a year prior to his death), Steinmetz gave up on socialism, at least as part of America’s future, a decision that probably saved his legacy. “Steinmetz must be regarded as one of the fathers of electrical engineering, and his work symbolizes the fruitful interaction between mathematics, science, and practical engineering. He made outstanding contributions to the field, and his influence was transmitted not only by his discoveries and inventions, but also by his writings. Much of the methodology of modern circuit theory was developed and became widely known through his textbooks. His successful experience with GE encouraged other companies to become involved in basic research, which was a new departure in American industrial thinking. Finally, his was a true ‘rags to riches’ story that has been an inspiration to immigrants, to those affected with a physical disability, and to those whom society would dismiss as ‘non-conformists”(ANB). This book was presented to American electrical engineer Comfort A. Adams, who made great contributions in areas including the steel industry and commercial welding. “Adams was much recognized during his career. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He delivered the inaugural Adams Lecture for the American Welding Society and received its Samuel Wylie Miller Medal. In 1944 he received the American Institute of Electrical Engineer’s Lamme Medal both for his work in the theory and design of alternating-current machinery and for his work in welding. Perhaps his most prestigious award was the Edison Medal in 1956 for ‘pioneering achievements in the development of alternating current electric machines and in electrical welding; for vision and initiative in the formation of an engineering standards organization and for eminence as an educator and consulting engineer” (ANB). With The Story of Steinmetz, a GE promotional booklet that shares many of the images from this album, laid in.Interior fine, a bit of light restoration to binding. Extremely good condition.
