WORK SUSPENDED Two Chapters of an Unfinished Novel

Chapman & Hall 1942 - First edition. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "Pansy with love from Evelyn Christmas 1942 "Nous ne sommes pas le mieux a notre age" A very good copy indeed with a little fading to the spine and a trace of wear to the corners. A fine association inscribed to archetypal Bright Young Thing, Lady Pansy Lamb, daughter of Thomas Packenham, Earl of Longford. As a young debutante, Pansy (then Packenham) shared a flat in Ebury Street with Waugh's future first wife, Evelyn Gardner. Waugh's brother, Alec, described the pair as "more than usually pleasant examples of the Modern Girl, emancipated but not brassy". It was with Pansy's encouragement that Gardner agreed to marry Waugh. Lamb, who was a close friend of Nancy Mitford, wrote two novels under her maiden name and became Anthony Powell's sister-in-law upon Powell's marriage to Lady Violet Packenham. Work Suspended was the title give to the fragments of a novel Waugh abandoned to take up active service. It was published on Waugh's return in edition of just 500 copies, making it quite uncommon, particularly in such a well preserved dustwrapper. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Telegram from Heaven

New York: The Dial Press, (1942). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. 307 pages. The only novel by the blacklisted American screenwriter, published two years before the production of his first screenplay. Four of Manoff's screenplays were produced for the big screen before he was blacklisted by Hollywood bosses for being a member of the Communist Party. Manoff was named as a Party member by several witnesses who testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and his wife, actress Lee Grant, was blacklisted after she refused to testify against him. Manoff continued writing for television under the pseudonym Joel Carpenter, including episodes for Naked City, a series inspired by the 1948 film of the same name, which was co-written by Hollywood Ten member Albert Maltz. First edition (first printing). Spine is toned and leans a bit, blue cloth worn and frayed at the corners, and torn at the spine head, else a very good copy; no dust jacket. An association copy between two blacklisted screenwriters. A signed, unaddressed inscription by the author on the front free endpaper is followed by the signature of Albert Maltz, one of the jailed 'Hollywood Ten' who refused to answer questions by the House Un-American Activities Committee regarding possible communist ties. The inscription reads: 'Thanks for much encouragement and good advice. Please accept this book as an expression of my respect and admiration for your own writing.' Two years later, Maltz published a controversial 1946 article in the New Masses, 'What Shall We Ask of Writers?,' which denounced the idea of using 'art as a weapon,' and which mentioned Manoff. The article was quoted in a September 1951 hearing of the House Committee of Un-American Activities, and continues to merit mention and analysis in magazines and online publications well into the 21st century.

Flight to Arras (Signed Limited Edition). Translated from the French by Lewis Galantiere and Illustrated by Bernard Lamotte

Reynal & Hitchcock, New York 1942 - Handsomely bound in blue leather spine stamped brightly in gold, and sturdy woven linen boards. Splendid colored pictorial endpapers and numerous full-page drawings by Lamotte throughout. The leather spine is rubbed at the top and the bottom of the spine ends, and there is a short, closed tear at the top left edge, not affecting the gold lettering. Also light edge-wear and occasional scuffing to the blue leather. With the original box which is sunfaded along the edges and split along the top left-hand side. A scarce copy of this classic Saint-Exupery adventure in aviation by the author of Night Flight and The Little Prince. Flight to Arras (French: Pilote de guerre) is a memoir by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Written in 1942, it recounts his role in the Armée de l'Air (French Air Force) as pilot of a reconnaissance plane during the Battle of France in 1940. The book condenses months of flights into a single terrifying mission over the town of Arras. Saint-Exupéry was assigned to Reconnaissance Group II/33 flying the twin-engine Bloch MB.170. At the start of the war there were only fifty reconnaissance crews, of which twenty-three were in his unit. Within the first few days of the German invasion of France in May 1940, seventeen of the II/33 crews were sacrificed recklessly, he writes "like glasses of water thrown onto a forest fire". Saint-Exupéry survived the French defeat but refused to join the Royal Air Force over political differences with de Gaulle and in late 1940 went to New York where he accepted the National Book Award for Wind, Sand and Stars. He remained in North America for two years, and then in the spring of 1943 rejoined his old unit inNorth Africa. In July 1944, "risking flesh to prove good faith", he failed to return from a reconnaissance mission over France. This work was adapted as a radio drama for American audiences by the NBC Red Network and broadcast on 7 October 1942 at the Author's Playhouse. The work was later adapted, by Rod Wooden, in 1998 as a radio drama by BBC Radio 4, with David Threlfall playing the role of the pilot. (Wikipedia) Signed Limited Edition, this is #456/500 copies signed by Saint-Exupery and the illustrator. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Maps of the California Gold Region 1848-1857 a biblio-cartography of an important decade

Grabhorn Press, San Francisco 1942 - xlii, 153p., 9.75x14.5 inches, foreword, introductory, background maps, alphabetical index, 26 folding maps beautifully reproduced and expertly folded (printed b&w, or monochrome, in colors, the "Ornamental" one hand-colored whether at the bindary or in full photographic reproduction). First edition, one of 300 copies, the binding is green paper-over-boards and blond quarter-calf backing with red leather spine label gilt. Textblock and endsheets are fine and clean, with no misfolding of maps. Externally, there is a small square sunned area to calf on the rear board that may reflect the tanning of the hide used for this copy; but there is also some scuffing (very mild, evened-out scuffing) to spine panel that contrasts to the calf surface on the boards, which has a smooth, pressed look and feel; that oddity makes us wonder if the panel is sandpapered. But the spine label is perfect, the boards likewise, the volume handsome and handleable and we can confidently call it a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Axially Symmetric Membranes. TYPESCRIPT with MSS corrections.

Manuscript/typscript 1942 - Paul Nemenyi and Clifford Truesdell, "Axially Symmetric Membranes", original typescript/carbon, 13 leaves, produced at the School of mathematical Mechanics, Brown University, and dated August, 1942. Two-hole punch bound in a manila folder with metal brace. There are a number of penciled notes and corrections, though I cannot say in whose hand these were made. Signed "Professor Reissner, with the authors' compliments". Very Good condition. Provenance: Hans J. Reissner. Typescript/carbon of a leaf work by Paul Nemenyi and Clifford Truesdell, undertaken while Truesdell attended the School of Mathematical Mechanics at Brown University in August 1942. Nemenyi (1895-1952) was a math prodigy with a Ph.D. from Berlin in 1927, and was one of the "Martians" of outer-orbitally fantastic mathematicians and physicists who came to the U.S. fleeing Nazism (this group including von Karman, de Hevesy, Szilard, Wigner,Teller, Erdos, and of course von Neumann). He is also recognized as being the father of Bobby Fischer.+++ Clifford Truesdell (III, 1919-2000)was a very significant figure in the history of modern math, who in 1942 went to Brown from CalTech (where he obtained a B.S. in math and another in physics) before heading off to finish his Ph.D. (Solomon Lefschetz) at Princeton in 1943, finishing a long and varied career as emeritus prof at Hopkins. Truesdell and Nemenyi evidently knew one another well, collaborating on several projects, including The fundamental principles of analytic fluid dynamics, which seems to have abandoned. +++ The paper was sent to Prof Hans J. Reissner (as stated by the authors on the first page of the work). Reissner (1874-1967) was a leading German pioneer in aeronautics and aeronautical engineering and mathematical physics. He was appointed to the chair vacated by Arnold Sommerfeld at the Technische Hochschul at Aachen, where he established the aerodynamics laboratory and designed the great experimental wind tunnel there where he was the second director (after T. von Karman). He went on to the University of Berlin where he remained until 1938, leaving Germany for the United States. Reissner held a chair at the Illinois Institute of Technology and in 1944 joined the faculty at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Van Karman spoke very highly of Reissner and attributed his work in aerodynamics to be as important as those advances made by Prandtl (see von Karman’s Wind and Beyond). I haven't determined in what capacity Reissner filled though he too was at Brown in 1942 (and published two books there in that year, "Graphical Statics" and the "Theory of Propellers").         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1942 - 1942 Original Hardback Wisden, Ex library

Hi, We recently purchased the Wisdens from the Bolton Library and were pleasently surprised by their condition, they are Ex-Library and have stamps etc to them but they are priced very low so a great way to buy a cheap hardback that may be better than you think. This lot is a 1942 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very good book for an ex library. The boards are very nice and the gilts are very nice indeed for a '42 in fact the spine gilt is superb. The hinges show a tiny bit of weakness but still very good. The library factor are : Stamps to a few pages and page block, and a white square fixed to the last page. A superb price, we pass on the bargains to our buyers.

        Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy.

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1942. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine ends and corners bumped, extremities worn, spine lettering faded, hinges cracked but holding, contents evenly browned and a little foxed, a very good copy. First edition, first printing. Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy was Schumpeter's most important and controversial book, a philosophical analysis of economics and history in which he coined the term "creative destruction". Blaug, who calls this his masterpiece, notes that in this work Schumpeter "paradoxically rejected the Marxian diagnosis of the imminent breakdown of capitalism and, at the same time, predicted the almost inevitable arrival of socialism as a result of the betrayal of capitalist values by the intellectuals of the western world" (Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 216). Scarce in commerce.

        The Masculine Dead Poems, 1938-1940

Press of James A. Decker, Prairie City, IL 1942 - SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable toning as does the title page. This copy has been signed by William Everson as William Everson (dated 1944) with an inscription, and signed again in 1962 as Brother Antoninus. This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life, Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry. Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board, in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943, he was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon. In Camp Angel at Waldport, Oregon, with other poets, artists and actors such as Kemper Nomland, William Eshelman, Kermit Sheets, Glen Coffield, George Woodcock and Kenneth Patchen, he founded a fine-arts program in which the CPS men staged plays and poetry-readings and learned the craft of fine printing." ; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
