Axially Symmetric Membranes. TYPESCRIPT with MSS corrections.

Manuscript/typscript 1942 - Paul Nemenyi and Clifford Truesdell, "Axially Symmetric Membranes", original typescript/carbon, 13 leaves, produced at the School of mathematical Mechanics, Brown University, and dated August, 1942. Two-hole punch bound in a manila folder with metal brace. There are a number of penciled notes and corrections, though I cannot say in whose hand these were made. Signed "Professor Reissner, with the authors' compliments". Very Good condition. Provenance: Hans J. Reissner. Typescript/carbon of a leaf work by Paul Nemenyi and Clifford Truesdell, undertaken while Truesdell attended the School of Mathematical Mechanics at Brown University in August 1942. Nemenyi (1895-1952) was a math prodigy with a Ph.D. from Berlin in 1927, and was one of the "Martians" of outer-orbitally fantastic mathematicians and physicists who came to the U.S. fleeing Nazism (this group including von Karman, de Hevesy, Szilard, Wigner,Teller, Erdos, and of course von Neumann). He is also recognized as being the father of Bobby Fischer.+++ Clifford Truesdell (III, 1919-2000)was a very significant figure in the history of modern math, who in 1942 went to Brown from CalTech (where he obtained a B.S. in math and another in physics) before heading off to finish his Ph.D. (Solomon Lefschetz) at Princeton in 1943, finishing a long and varied career as emeritus prof at Hopkins. Truesdell and Nemenyi evidently knew one another well, collaborating on several projects, including The fundamental principles of analytic fluid dynamics, which seems to have abandoned. +++ The paper was sent to Prof Hans J. Reissner (as stated by the authors on the first page of the work). Reissner (1874-1967) was a leading German pioneer in aeronautics and aeronautical engineering and mathematical physics. He was appointed to the chair vacated by Arnold Sommerfeld at the Technische Hochschul at Aachen, where he established the aerodynamics laboratory and designed the great experimental wind tunnel there where he was the second director (after T. von Karman). He went on to the University of Berlin where he remained until 1938, leaving Germany for the United States. Reissner held a chair at the Illinois Institute of Technology and in 1944 joined the faculty at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Van Karman spoke very highly of Reissner and attributed his work in aerodynamics to be as important as those advances made by Prandtl (see von Karman’s Wind and Beyond). I haven't determined in what capacity Reissner filled though he too was at Brown in 1942 (and published two books there in that year, "Graphical Statics" and the "Theory of Propellers").         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1942 - 1942 Original Hardback Wisden, Ex library

Hi, We recently purchased the Wisdens from the Bolton Library and were pleasently surprised by their condition, they are Ex-Library and have stamps etc to them but they are priced very low so a great way to buy a cheap hardback that may be better than you think. This lot is a 1942 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very good book for an ex library. The boards are very nice and the gilts are very nice indeed for a '42 in fact the spine gilt is superb. The hinges show a tiny bit of weakness but still very good. The library factor are : Stamps to a few pages and page block, and a white square fixed to the last page. A superb price, we pass on the bargains to our buyers.

        Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy.

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1942. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine ends and corners bumped, extremities worn, spine lettering faded, hinges cracked but holding, contents evenly browned and a little foxed, a very good copy. First edition, first printing. Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy was Schumpeter's most important and controversial book, a philosophical analysis of economics and history in which he coined the term "creative destruction". Blaug, who calls this his masterpiece, notes that in this work Schumpeter "paradoxically rejected the Marxian diagnosis of the imminent breakdown of capitalism and, at the same time, predicted the almost inevitable arrival of socialism as a result of the betrayal of capitalist values by the intellectuals of the western world" (Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 216).         The Masculine Dead Poems, 1938-1940

Prairie City, IL: Press of James A. Decker. Very Good. 1942. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable toning as does the title page. This copy has been signed by William Everson as William Everson (dated 1944) with an inscription, and signed again in 1962 as Brother Antoninus. This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life, Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry. Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board, in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943, he was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon. In Camp Angel at Waldport, Oregon, with other poets, artists and actors such as Kemper Nomland, William Eshelman, Kermit Sheets, Glen Coffield, George Woodcock and Kenneth Patchen, he founded a fine-arts program in which the CPS men staged plays and poetry-readings and learned the craft of fine printing." ; Signed by Author .

        Lamentação. Poema.

Coimbra, Atlantida, 1942. - 8°, later quarter morocco over cloth boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, dark green morocco lettering piece in second compartment from head, gilt letter and gilt fillets on bands, original printed wrappers bound in. Foxing to front wrapper. Overall in very good condition. Author's signed and dated six-line presentation inscription on recto of initial (blank) leaf: "Ao José Maria, // com a velha amistade // de // Miguel Torga // Coimbra // Maio de 42". Ticket of the Porto bookseller Manuel Ferreira in upper outer corner of front pastedown endleaf, partially obscured by the much larger engraved armorial bookplate of Dom Diogo de Bragança (Lafões). 32 pp., (1 l. colophon). *** FIRST EDITION of this significant, relatively early poem. Among the most important Portuguese authors of the twentieth century (?figura cimeira das Letras portuguesas?- Grande enciclopédia, Actualização, X, 397), the physician Adolfo Rocha (1907-1995) was at the center of the "Grupo Presença". His poetry is said to reflect "ainda as apreensões, esperanças e angústias do seu tempo, dentro de um ângulo individualista e, no fundo, religioso de visão, e a sua pureza e originalidade rítmicas, a coerência orgânica das suas imagens impõem-se ." (Saraiva & Lopes, História da literatura Portuguesa [17th ed., 2001], p. 1015).Adolfo [Corrêa] Rocha, who wrote under the pseudonym Miguel Torga, made major contributions to Portuguese prose and poetry. Born in 1907 in S. Martinho de Anta, Trás-os-Montes, he made his literary debut in 1928 with Ansiedade (not offered for sale to the public), followed by Rampa, 1930, Tributo, 1931, and Abismo, 1932, all innovative in form and nonconformist in content. He gained wide public acclaim in 1936, with O outro Livro de Job, and his autobiographical series A criação do Mundo (os dos primeiros dias), 1937, O terceiro dia da criação do Mundo, 1939, and O quarto dia da criação do Mundo, 1939, is considered one of the major Portuguese prose works of this century. Torga was associated with the second Modernist movement, but broke away from it in 1930 to follow his own path: "verdadeiramente inconfundivel, caracterizado por um realismo de sentido individualizante, de feição violenta e vitalista, socialmente responsabilizado e responsabilizador" (Magalhães Gonçalves, p. 12).Provenance: According to penciled inscriptions we have seen in other volumes with similar presentation inscriptions, bindings, and provenance (in the hand of the Porto bookseller Manuel Ferreria [?] or of Diogo Lafões [?]), "Jose Maria" was José Maria Reis Pereira, who wrote under the pseudonym José Régio, one of the most important forces in the second wave of Portuguese modernism. Régio collaborated with Torga on the influential literary review Presença. However, we have been informed by a colleague who handled a similar volume in which the full name of the recipient was present in the inscription, that "José Maria" was José Maria Lopes Gomes, apparently an old friend. Dom Diogo de Bragança (Lafões) (Lisbon, 1930-Lisbon, 2012) was an accomplished equestrian, author of books on dressage, and a dedicated bibliophile whose collection focused on books about horses and horsemanship, plus works on Portuguese history and literature. Dom Diogo used the courtesy title Marquês de Marialva, by permission of his elder brother, Dom Lopo de Bragança, Duque de Lafões, the actual holder of the title.         VINTAGE TYPED & SIGNED HELEN KELLER LETTER 1942 WORLD WAR II EFFORT AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR THE BLIND FUNDRAISING PASKUS

Helen Keller. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1942. Letter. Personally addressed, typed and signed Helen Keller letter. This well-preserved letter is typed on fine watermarked paper with clean typeface, Keller's address at the top, and her signature cleanly written at the bottom. This piece measures approximately 7.5" by 10.5". This letter, dated November 21, 1942, is addressed to one Mr. Paskus, to whom Keller advocates for her "blind fellows" in their desire to contribute to the ongoing war effort, and to that end requests financial support for the American Foundation for the Blind "to arm the courage of the blind with work. If you do, there will be an added sweetness for you in the victory of light over darkness and generous ideals over barbarism." The letter is typed and shows Keller's signature in pencil at the bottom. Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deafblind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film "The Miracle Worker." Her birthplace in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, is now a museum and sponsors an annual "Helen Keller Day." Her birthday on June 27 is commemorated as Helen Keller Day in the U. S. State of Pennsylvania and was authorized at the federal level by presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, the 100th anniversary of her birth. A prolific author, Keller was well-traveled and outspoken in her convictions. A member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World, she campaigned for women's suffrage, labor rights, socialism, and other similar causes. She was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1971 and was one of twelve inaugural inductees to the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame on June 8, 2015.         L'AUTRE CHOSE. Illustrations de Serge HAND (aquarelles de Nicole Lebret).

Collection "VERTIGES". Éditions du Signet d'Or. Liège, Blegique. 1942 - Collection "VERTIGES". Éditions du Signet d'Or. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Original acetate jacket. In blue card slipcase, as issued. Custom dark blue morocco backed slipcase and chemise. Printed in three colours throughout, with folding facsimile broadside. A fine copy. Inscribed by Roosevelt to his secretary Grace Tully in blank ink on the front free endpaper: "For Grace – who was with this volume from the first dictation to the final "make-up" – with love from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Christmas 1942". A select compendium of Roosevelt and Churchill's early war speeches, specially collated and printed as a holiday gift for White House staff members in December 1942. Beginning with Roosevelt's famous address to Congress the day after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, this slim volume includes three other Roosevelt orations: his broadcast to the nation on 9 December 1941, his 11 December request to Congress for a declaration of war against Germany and Italy, and his 6 January 1942 State of the Union address; together with his joint Christmas 1941 radio greetings with Churchill from the south portico of the White House, Churchill's 26 December 1941 address to Congress, and a fold-out broadside facsimile of the 1 January 1942 United Nations declaration. Grace Tully was the only person Roosevelt trusted to take dictation of his speeches, a fact he alludes to in his inscription.
