Collection of 38 flyers (heralds) for movies, from Bogor, Indonesia].Bogor, 1947-1953. 38 single sheets, most printed double-sided, several folding, nearly all with illustrations depicting actors and movie scenes, mostly printed in one or two colours, some in four-colour half-tones.

      - Colourful collection of vintage movie heralds and advertisements from the private collection of Bastiaan Cornelis Pieter Hendrik van Baak, commercial advisor of the cinemas Maxim and City-Theatre in Bogor (former Buitenzorg), Indonesia, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Many sheets contain synopsis and other details in both Indonesian and Dutch, which is noteworthy as Indonesia was no longer a Dutch colony. Musicals and adventures movies form the majority of the collection that includes Singin' In The Rain, An American In Paris, To Have And Have Not, Knock On Any Door, The Big Clock, The Prisoner Of Zenda and Joan Of Arc. The heralds were printed in the United States and most have the Amalgamated Lithographers of America Union label, with the local details (and often opening dates) added later. Many promote contemporary movies, but the collection also contains several heralds of older movies that had not been released earlier in Indonesia. A nice collection that gives an interesting insight in the theatrical life in the early days of the Republic of Indonesia. Extra added: Two small pictures of stars Clark Gable and Ava Gardner with stamp of the Bogor City-Theatre (10,8 x 8,7 cm), 1 issue of Ciné-Roman, containing story and pictures of White Cargo (MGM, 1942), and advertisements. (Wrappers, 19 pp.), and 7 heralds of German, British, Indonesian, Malayan and Philippine movies. All sheets are in very good to mint condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH

[New York]:: Howell, Soskin, Publishers, [1942]., 1942. First edition. First U. S. edition. Author's first book. Near fine, tight copy in dust jacket, professionally restored at spine ends and corners with two small closed tears at bottom edge of rear panel. Tough and important hardboiled mystery about the kidnapping of an heiress by a mob of ruthless gangsters. Dave Fenner, an ex-reporter turned private eye, is the hero of this tale. It was made into a film in 1948 with an all-British cast except for American actor Jack La Rue, who starred as Slim Grissom, the leader of the Grissom Gang. In 1971, Robert Aldrich filmed the story using the title THE GRISSOM GANG, that starred Kim Darby as Barbara Blandish, Robert Lansing as Dave Fenner, with Scott Wilson, Tony Musante, Connie Stevens, Ralph Waite, and others in supporting roles. The book provides a tough, hardboiled story and THE GRISSOM GANG is carefully constructed, exciting, full of suspense, with much attention to the story detail. An exceptional copy.

Go Down Moses and Other Stories

New York: Random House, (1942). First edition. three-quarter brick red cloth over salmon colored, textured paper boards, top edge gilt . Two tiny stains on foredge, otherwise an immaculate copy/in original tissue wrapper, housed in a custom made slipcase. Octavo. One of 100 copies, signed by the author Published May 11, 1942, by Random House, dedicated "To Mammy Caroline Barr, Mississippi, [1840-1940]: Who was born in slavery and who gave to my family a fidelity without stint or calculation of recompense and to my childhood an immeasurable devotion and love." One of Faulkner's masterpieces, Go Down, Moses is an episodic novel consisting of short stories, most of which were published elsewhere. A difficult novel at times, the novel tells the story of the McCaslin family, beginning with the family patriarch Lucius Quintus Carothers McCaslin, and his many descendants, both black and white. It is a noteworthy exploration of race, particularly as it is compounded with miscegenation, and is concerned also with the vanishing wilderness. Faulkner intended the stories as a novel and the words ?and Other Stories? were dropped from the trade edition. This is the smallest limitation of any of Faulkner?s books and as such drastically limits the number of complete collections of his works[Petersen, Clark. Each In Its Ordered Place: A Faulkner Collector?s Notebook A.23.2a].

Go Down, Moses and Other Stories

New York: Random House,, 1942. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom black cloth solander box. An exceptional copy in the bright jacket, with tiny chip to upper tip of rear panel expertly repaired. First trade edition, first printing. From the library of Stephen Longstreet (1907–2002), with his signature to the front pastedown. Longstreet, an author and screenwriter who wrote over 100 novels, was also renowned as an artist, publishing five books on jazz illustrated with his own drawings and watercolours; his artwork includes portraits of jazz artists such as Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. Longstreet first met Faulkner in 1937 at Random House, just before Longstreet's first novel was commissioned. The two men became drinking companions, and Faulkner calmed Longstreet's "first writer shakes", saying "'Yo' just keep the words coming. No trick to it all if the writing is in yo'. Nothing will come if yo' haven't got the stuff.'" Later, in 1944, Longstreet persuaded Warner Bros to hire Faulkner as a screenwriter when he was in tightened financial straits. To Longstreet's dismay, Faulkner's first assignment was his own novel Stallion Road. Faulkner's response to Longstreet was: "'I don't think much of yo' young writers, but they are paying me for this, so I'll go through it'". The resulting script was "'a magnificent thing…utterly impossible to be made into a trite movie of the period'", and Longstreet told Faulkner that, though the script would have to be rejected, he liked it for "its quivering alertness". He was touched to find that, although not given to signing books, the next day Faulkner had signed the six copies of his works that Longstreet then kept in the office. "'Some ardent but dishonest Faulkner collector'" stole four of the books the following day; Longstreet retained The Wild Palms, and gave away the other remaining book to another writer.

        Go Down, Moses

1942. First Edition . FAULKNER, William. Go Down, Moses. New York: Random House, (1942). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First trade edition, first issue, of Faulkner’s masterpiece of interrelated short stories, with the first book appearance of “The Bear.”Go Down, Moses “was a landmark volume for Faulkner… Here we have the Southern dilemma, and Faulkner has transformed it into the American” (Karl, 665-67). “So committed was Faulkner to the expansive possibilities of the short story form that in Go Down, Moses he created what he always insisted was a novel composed entirely of interrelated stories previously published separately” (Gelfant, 252). One of the most acclaimed stories, “The Bear,” had appeared, in abbreviated form, in the Saturday Evening Post the same year (Brodsky 229); the coming-of-age tale remains one of Faulkner’s most anthologized. A contemporary review in the Boston Globe said of all the stories that they “represent William Faulkner at his best. Which is equivalent to saying the best we have.” First issue, in black cloth with the top edge stained red. Stated “First Printing.” Both the trade and rare signed limited copies of this book are from the same printing. Brodsky 232-234. Petersen A23.2b. Owner signature.Text fine, archival repair to spine head of book; slight chipping, small bit of early repair to corresponding spine head of price-clipped dust jacket. An attractive copy.

        Out of Space and Time.

[Sauk City:] Arkham House,, 1942. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket as supplied by George Locke. Dust jacket designed by Hannes Bok. Spine gently rolled, wear to extremities, a very good copy in the jacket with browned spine and panel margins, minor loss to head of spine, closed tears to folds and front panel, tape repair to verso. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Donald Fryer, "From a wild weird clime / that lieth, sublime, / Out of space, out of time." Clark Ashton Smith, Pacific Grove, Cal. Sept. 6th, 1959". Additionally inscribed by Fryer, with his annotation to p. x and occasional corrections to text. Fryer (b. 1934), a poet to whom Smith was something of a mentor, completed a bibliography of Smith in 1965, The Emperor of Dreams, which was published in 1976; and edited three volumes of Smith's work for Arkham House from 1965 to 1971. This copy is subsequently from the personal collection of noted fantasy bookseller and bibliographer George Locke. Locke traces the provenance of this copy in A Spectrum of Fantasy; "I obtained this book, sans d/w, a few years ago from a collector and dealer Robert L. Brown of California for Bob Gilbert ... some time later Bob sold me his Clark Ashton Smith collection. I winkled this title out of the collection before selling it. A short time afterwards, I went through some dustwrappers which a specialist fantasy dealer had and was astonished to find one". A collection of dark fantasy tales, Out of Space and Time was the third book to be published by Arkham House; released in a run of 1,054 copies. An excellent association copy of a work which is uncommon signed, with one copy traced at auction.

        Out of Space and Time.

[Sauk City:] Arkham House, 1942 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket as supplied by George Locke. Spine gently rolled, wear to extremities, a very good copy in the jacket with browned spine and panel margins, minor loss to head of spine, closed tears to folds and front panel, tape repair to verso. Dust jacket designed by Hannes Bok. Brown of California for Bob Gilbert . some time later Bob sold me his Clark Ashton Smith collection. Bleiler 1484; Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, I, pp. 200-201; L. W. Currey Cat. 105, 3608.         WORK SUSPENDED Two Chapters of an Unfinished Novel

Chapman & Hall 1942 - First edition. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "Pansy with love from Evelyn Christmas 1942 "Nous ne sommes pas le mieux a notre age" A very good copy indeed with a little fading to the spine and a trace of wear to the corners. A fine association inscribed to archetypal Bright Young Thing, Lady Pansy Lamb, daughter of Thomas Packenham, Earl of Longford. As a young debutante, Pansy (then Packenham) shared a flat in Ebury Street with Waugh's future first wife, Evelyn Gardner. Waugh's brother, Alec, described the pair as "more than usually pleasant examples of the Modern Girl, emancipated but not brassy". It was with Pansy's encouragement that Gardner agreed to marry Waugh. Lamb, who was a close friend of Nancy Mitford, wrote two novels under her maiden name and became Anthony Powell's sister-in-law upon Powell's marriage to Lady Violet Packenham. Work Suspended was the title give to the fragments of a novel Waugh abandoned to take up active service. It was published on Waugh's return in edition of just 500 copies, making it quite uncommon, particularly in such a well preserved dustwrapper. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Telegram from Heaven

New York: The Dial Press, (1942). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. 307 pages. The only novel by the blacklisted American screenwriter, published two years before the production of his first screenplay. Four of Manoff's screenplays were produced for the big screen before he was blacklisted by Hollywood bosses for being a member of the Communist Party. Manoff was named as a Party member by several witnesses who testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and his wife, actress Lee Grant, was blacklisted after she refused to testify against him. Manoff continued writing for television under the pseudonym Joel Carpenter, including episodes for Naked City, a series inspired by the 1948 film of the same name, which was co-written by Hollywood Ten member Albert Maltz. First edition (first printing). Spine is toned and leans a bit, blue cloth worn and frayed at the corners, and torn at the spine head, else a very good copy; no dust jacket. An association copy between two blacklisted screenwriters. A signed, unaddressed inscription by the author on the front free endpaper is followed by the signature of Albert Maltz, one of the jailed 'Hollywood Ten' who refused to answer questions by the House Un-American Activities Committee regarding possible communist ties. The inscription reads: 'Thanks for much encouragement and good advice. Please accept this book as an expression of my respect and admiration for your own writing.' Two years later, Maltz published a controversial 1946 article in the New Masses, 'What Shall We Ask of Writers?,' which denounced the idea of using 'art as a weapon,' and which mentioned Manoff.         Flight to Arras (Signed Limited Edition). Translated from the French by Lewis Galantiere and Illustrated by Bernard Lamotte

Reynal & Hitchcock, New York 1942 - Handsomely bound in blue leather spine stamped brightly in gold, and sturdy woven linen boards. Splendid colored pictorial endpapers and numerous full-page drawings by Lamotte throughout. The leather spine is rubbed at the top and the bottom of the spine ends, and there is a short, closed tear at the top left edge, not affecting the gold lettering. Also light edge-wear and occasional scuffing to the blue leather. With the original box which is sunfaded along the edges and split along the top left-hand side. A scarce copy of this classic Saint-Exupery adventure in aviation by the author of Night Flight and The Little Prince. Flight to Arras (French: Pilote de guerre) is a memoir by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Written in 1942, it recounts his role in the Armée de l'Air (French Air Force) as pilot of a reconnaissance plane during the Battle of France in 1940. The book condenses months of flights into a single terrifying mission over the town of Arras. Saint-Exupéry was assigned to Reconnaissance Group II/33 flying the twin-engine Bloch MB.170. At the start of the war there were only fifty reconnaissance crews, of which twenty-three were in his unit. Within the first few days of the German invasion of France in May 1940, seventeen of the II/33 crews were sacrificed recklessly, he writes "like glasses of water thrown onto a forest fire". Saint-Exupéry survived the French defeat but refused to join the Royal Air Force over political differences with de Gaulle and in late 1940 went to New York where he accepted the National Book Award for Wind, Sand and Stars. He remained in North America for two years, and then in the spring of 1943 rejoined his old unit inNorth Africa. In July 1944, "risking flesh to prove good faith", he failed to return from a reconnaissance mission over France. This work was adapted as a radio drama for American audiences by the NBC Red Network and broadcast on 7 October 1942 at the Author's Playhouse. The work was later adapted, by Rod Wooden, in 1998 as a radio drama by BBC Radio 4, with David Threlfall playing the role of the pilot. (Wikipedia) Signed Limited Edition, this is #456/500 copies signed by Saint-Exupery and the illustrator. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
