Speech Broadcast by The Prime Minister Mr. Winston Churchill, May 10, 1942

The British Library of Information, New York 1942 - This is a beautifully fine copy of the first English-language edition, only printing of Churchill's May 10, 1942 broadcast address, made on the second anniversary of his becoming wartime Prime Minister. Churchill spoke that night to the British people live from the Cabinet War Room. It was five days later, on a tour of bomber stations, army units, and armaments factories, that Churchill most aptly summed up the overall theme of his broadcast address when he told a Leeds crowd: "We have reached a period in the war when it would be premature to say that we have topped the ridge, but now we see the ridge ahead." Churchill’s 10 May broadcast address looks both back to darker times earlier in the war, and to present challenges that herald a better future. By the end of his second year as Prime Minister, the imminent threat to Britain had eased sufficiently that Churchill faced political divisions in the wartime coalition and growing criticism of his war leadership. Addressing this criticism, he had drafted a passage which began, "Everyone feels safer now, and in consequence the weaker brethren become more vocal ", seeking to diminish his critics and stave off their efforts to reduce his "power of direction and initiative." Wisely, Churchill deleted this passage at the last moment. Perhaps as a gentler and more deft assertion of his leadership, Churchill recalled the early days of the war when France had fallen and Britain was alone: "It fell to me in those days to express the sentiments and resolves of the British nation in that supreme crisis of its life For a whole year after the fall of France we stood alone " He spoke of his difficult and uncomfortable ally, Russia, complimenting Russia for her tenacity, but attributing her victory to the Russian winter. He spoke against gas warfare, promising that Britain would be prepared to retaliate massively in kind against Germany in kind should Germany resort to poison gas – echoing the deterrence through threat of massive retaliation strategy that would characterize the coming Cold War. He also spoke of Japan, and the promise of combined British and American sea power. Churchill concluded with a bracingly Churchillian attaboy: " tonight I give you a message of good cheer. You deserve it, and the facts endorse it. But be it good cheer or be it bad cheer will make no difference to us; we shall drive on to the end, and do our duty, win or die " This pamphlet is one in a series of Churchill's speeches printed by the British Library of Information in New York. As do most in the series, this example bears a cover design featuring 3 vertical rules along the right side and a royal arms device at the top right. The British Library of Information published twenty-nine editions of statements, speeches, and broadcast addresses by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, beginning with his first speech as Prime Minister of May 13, 1940 and ending with the broadcast address of November 29, 1942. These editions were often issued within two or three days of delivery and "reveal the political determination of the British government to bring the inspiration and steadfastness of the Prime Minister and the British nation to an American nation not yet engaged in the war. Indeed, twenty-two of the BLOI speech pamphlets were published before Pearl Harbor." (Cohen, Volume I, p.513, A120) This twelve-page, wire-stitched pamphlet measures 9 inches tall x 6 inches wide. We find this particular BLOI pamphlet to be especially scarce, and doubly so in such condition, which is genuinely fine. The pamphlet remains crisp, clean, and complete. We find no tears, no losses, no previous ownership marks, and virtually no wear or soiling. Both binding staples remain firmly intact and show no corrosion. We note only mild age-toning. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, clear mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A169.2, Woods A88/1 First English-language edition, only printing. [Attributes: First Edition]

CARTOGRAPHIC PROPAGANDA / WORLD WAR II / JAPANESE EMPIRE: LA BANDERA VICTORIOSA DEL JAPÓN ONDEA SOBRE EL PACÍFICO. [THE VICTORIOUS FLAG OF JAPAN FLIES OVER THE PACIFIC].

Colour off-set printing (Good, some wear along old folds, printed on very fragile paper), 59.5 x 83.5 cm (23.5 x 33 inches). - [Fascist Spain], December 1942. A magnificent large-format propaganda broadside, or ‘wall newspaper’ made in December 1942, during World War II, to celebrate the conquests made by Japan across the Asia-Pacific region, published in Fascist Spain. - This brilliantly designed, large format propaganda broadside, or ‘wall newspaper’, was issued in December 1942 to celebrate the impressive conquests that Japan had made during the early stages of World War II in the Pacific Theatre. The work was issued in the Castilian language in Fascist Spain, likely sponsored by an unknown agent of the Nazi German government, Japan’s key ally. The focus of the work is a powerful map that shows the entire theatre of the war, extending from India, across East Asia, and then all the way over to the west coast of North America. Japan enjoys the pride of place, with bright arrows branching out in all directions, showing the paths and targets of Japanese conquests and attacks. Indeed, by this time, Japan had vanquished all British, American and Dutch positions in East Asia, and was mounting sporadic attacks upon Allied positions as far war as Alaska and Sri Lanka. The red cloud which rests over East Asia shows the extent of Japanese conquests to date, while imperial Japan’s ‘Rising Sun’ flag flies over the scene in the upper-left corner. The balance of the composition is filled with photographs and rhetorical text that proclaims how Japan is mowing down its opposition. Japan & the Early Stages of the Pacific War - Although they had suffered some set backs, in December 1942, Japan was the dominant force in the Asia Pacific region, with the Allies, based in India, Australia and the North America, on the defensive. World War II in East Asia, or at least the Japan vs. the Allies element of it, began in December 1941, over a year later than in the Western theatre. Japan famously mounted a successful seek attack upon the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. From there, Japan quickly found itself at war with the U.S., Britain, Australia and the Netherlands. For the next six months, Japan enjoyed rapid and almost complete success everywhere. On December 25, 1941, Japan conquered Hong Kong from British-Canadian forces. In January 1942, she conquered Burma and Malaysia from the British, and most of the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) from the Netherlands; and the Philippines for the United States. In February, Japan took Singapore, the last major British base in East Asia. That same month, the Japanese air force made a devastating air raid upon Darwin, Australia, and in the following months made air raids into the Indian Ocean, striking Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka). .         [Archive]: U.S. Navy Officer's Letters and Bluejacket's Manual with Photo Album from World War II, 1942-1946

New Jersey / Massachusetts / Ohio / Pennsylvania / Texas. 1942-1946 (a few earlier). A collection of 79 letters to and from Marion Alexander Cassell during his time in the Navy from 1942 through 1946 as well as a photo album and his copy of the Bluejackets' Manual. Album is an oblong octavo measuring 11" x 7". Brown cloth boards bound together with string. The album contains 66 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1" and 5" x 3.5" with some captions written on the back of the photographs. The Bluejackets' Manual: is a tenth edition. 12mo. 784pp. Blue cloth boards with stamped green titles. All items are near fine. The letters have light creasing from mailing; the book has modest spotting on the top page-edge with lightly bumped corners; and the photo album has tiny tears and small chips. Letters to and from Marion Alexander Cassell during his time in the Navy from various locations some being, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Most of the letters are from Cassell's mother, Mary, in Oak Hill, Ohio. She writes often of how much she misses him and dotes on his health; "You boys need all you can get and for all you have done! Be sure and have a heart check!" She also brings up the women her son is dating, as she mentions Doris Wallentine and three other women, Edith, Florence, and Alice Dodds. There are a couple of letters written by Cassell addressed to his mother. He mostly writes about his time traveling from place to place and though he was in the navy, he frequently got seasick, "Now I know what it's like to be seasick. You just get so sick you don't care whether the world comes or goes". He writes often about how he is sick and tired but enjoys the journey. He also writes to his mother about the many different "blondes" he flirts with, "I really do love her (Florence)... Coincidentally, I met a beautiful blonde the other day. I really do like blondes, I just can't seem to help it." Several letters are from Doris Wallentine, an admirer or romantic interest of Cassell's from Dallas, Texas. She often writes very flatly and rarely shows interest in their relationship. Only a few times does she write anything about the two of them, "Frankly, I was quite flattered that you thought enough of me to travel 1400 miles to see me -- and maybe also by the fact that you say you didn't flirt with any blondes -- because, knowing you, I know that must have been quite a strain! Ha! Ha!" Wallentine also expressed an interest in joining the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), "I have been thinking about rather seriously joining the Waves -- what would you think of that -- as I know you never had much a woe for women in uniform?" Another admirer, Alice Dodds also frequently writes to Cassell. Her earliest letter (from Wellesley, Massachusetts) to Cassell attempts to reconnect with him after 18 months of not talking, "I had to decide whether not to reply to your last letter sent 18 months ago...At this time you may be a dignified married man who no longer desires to carry a 'pole,' of candy under his arm... Pardon my terrible correspondence." However, the letters written from her to Cassell after are warm and friendly. Cassell did not end up marrying or continuing his romantic relationship with Wallentine, Edith, Florence, or Alice Dodds as in 1955, he married Hazel Clare Moreland. According to sources not in this archive, Moreland traveled across the country to start a new life in Los Angeles. There she met Naval Commander Marion Cassell. After their marriage in 1955, they traveled the world together as well as across continental North America. Moreland worked for the founders of MGM during the golden era of Hollywood. She became involved with script writing and film production, and considered herself fortunate to know many of the stars during that period. Cassell never had any children and passed away in 1990 at the age of 80.Additionally featured in the Bluejackets' Manual is a gelatin silver sepia photograph of Marion Alexander Cassell laid in as well as names and addresses of fellow Navy men handwritten on the front free endpaper and Cassell's name stamped on the rear pastedown. Other ephemera includes a couple letters from friends asking how Cassell is doing, some mail from a construction company talking about building more structures for Army bases, and an envelope containing all of Cassell's information from the Naval Training School in Princeton, New Jersey. The photo album presents something of a mystery as it centers primarily on a young women's photographs of her time in the WAVES and in college. Several show her in Navy uniform with other women standing together or laughing and hugging each other. The other photos are of her with college friends and of different couples in the Navy. All the pictures are filled with smiles and not a single one solemn. The young woman's name is not written in but it can be assumed she was either a close friend or romantic partner of Cassell's, as she is seen in several pictures with him. How Cassell acquired the album is not entirely clear, but it did come with the archive, and provides at least some content on his relationships. An interesting look back on a man's life during World War II and his many relationships and adventures. .

Quarto, original hand-lettered wrappers, collated in sections (as issued), pp 81, bookplate to colophon leaf. Housed in faux leather portfolio with hand-lettered spine (hinges split), original faux leather slipcase. Consists of 13 poems, extensively illustrated with gouache and watercolour portraits, still lifes, and initials."Cette edition a ete faite sur l'Initiative de Mr Jean E. Bonna. Il a ete fait vingt exemplaires numerotes de 1 a 20. Chaque livre est illustre et peint a la main." [This edition made on the initiative of Mr Jean E. Bonna. It was done in twenty copies numbered 1 to 20. Each book is illustrated and hand painted.] Baudelaire'sSpleen de Paris(first published in 1869) represents an important early precursor to literary modernism, written exclusively in newly established poetic prose to capture the essence of modern, urban life. Baudelaire was heavily influenced by Aloysius Bertrand’s Gaspard de la nuit and sought to apply a new, modern poetic language to themes of pleasure and debauchery, metropolitan poverty, class divides, and the inevitable march of time. The full fifty vingnettes were originally published as the compilationPetits Poèmes en prose and represented writings from across the last twelve years of Baudelaire's life. This war-time publication, printed no doubt to combat the images of desctruction so prevalent in Europe at the time, includes the poemsÀ une heure du matin,Les Foules, L’Horloge, Un Hémisphère dans une chevelure,Les Projets,La Belle Dorothée,Enivrez-vous,Déjà,Les Fenêtres,Le Désir de peindre,Les Bienfaits de la lune,Le Port, andPortraits de maîtresses.Illustrated with original artworks composed in homage to impressionists such as Pissaro as well as the semi-eroticism of Gaugin, this rare edition of Baudelaire's seminal work appears to not be held in any institutional collection.

Archive of Eight Typed Letters Signed

Maryland and Ontario 1942 - All of these letters were written to Mr. Rodgers, a member of the Executive Board of the Council for Democracy. Four of the letters (totaling six pages) are on 7.5 x 5.75-inch personal stationery from Maynard's home in Westminster, Maryland, dated June 23 to August 19, 1942. Three of the letters (totaling four pages) are on 11 x 8.5-inch letterhead from Assumption College in Windsor, Ontario, dated from July 6 to September 23, 1942. The remaining letter is on a plain sheet of 11 x 8.5-inch paper with the Westminster address typed in, dated September 17, 1942. In this correspondence, Maynard agrees to write an article about why Catholics should support Russia and also expresses that he does not want to be party to ousting Liam O'Connor, in part: "With regard to the problem of Protestant pacifists, well, I understand that matter rather well, having been brought up as a Protestant." He disparages Fr. Coughlin: "I hear that [his] school for diplomats is a bluff." He talks about the request to soften his remarks in a magazine article: ".a delicate subject.and I have tried to handle it with discretion, my main fear now is that I have been so careful as to be a bit colorless." He also expresses his need to make money. At the time Maynard wrote these letters, he was not in the best of health and was also undergoing economic hardship. The following year, he spent long periods away from home doing research and giving lectures, while the family was chronically short of money (according to T.W. Hendricks "A Historian of American Catholicism"). These letters provide a window into his life and thinking in the summer of 1942. The letters all have natural folds; several have small stains (including one with a paperclip stain), but are all in very good(-) to very good(+) condition. English poet and literary critic who was best known as one of the most influential historians on Roman Catholicism in the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Vivien Leigh signed hardcover book, "The Skin of Our Teeth", with original dust jacket

n.p., Circa 1940s. 5.625" x 8.25". "Hardcover book, The Skin of Our Teeth: Play in Three Acts by Thornton Wilder (Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York/London, 1942), elegantly signed "Vivien Leigh" in blue fountain pen and underlined on front end paper, part of "V" of Vivien within slightly browned area. Red book covers with original robin's egg blue and black dust jacket, 142 pages, 5.625" x 8.25". In fine condition, with light patchy mat burn to front and back end papers, some minor edge tears, and two offcut pages (105 and 119) as published. Expected wear to dust jacket corners and edges. Personal library card signed "Adeline C. Gibson" affixed to interior front cover.American playwright Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth was first performed at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, CT in October 1942 starring Frederic March and Tallulah Bankhead. Classically trained English actress Vivien Leigh starred as housemaid Lily Sabina in four of its later productions: at the Phoenix Theater in London in May 1945; at the Piccadilly Theater in London in September 1946; on an Australian and New Zealand tour in November 1948; and in a later televised broadcast in March 1959. Leigh completely immersed herself in the role of Lily Sabina, the play's chatty and sexy narrator. Described as a "straw-blonde" and "over-rouged" parlor maid, Lily Sabina is a complex character whose name alludes at once to the proto-Garden anti-heroine Lilith and the violated Sabine women of Roman history. It is possible that Leigh consulted this book during preparations of or rehearsals for the role. She was directed by husband Laurence Olivier during some of these productions.Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) was already a well-established theater and film actress when she accepted the role in The Skin of Our Teeth. Before accepting her first movie role as an extra, Leigh studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She achieved success in English theatrical productions before trying the movies in the mid-to-late 1930s. Her break-out success as Scarlett O'Hara in 1939 Gone with the Wind made her an international star. The theatrical production of The Skin of Our Teeth was sandwiched between two of Leigh's film projects, Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) and Anna Karenina (1948), and one year after she was first diagnosed with tuberculosis.Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was a critically and commercially successful novelist, playwright, essayist, screenwriter, scholar, and translator. He won Pulitzer Prizes for both drama and fiction. Along with The Skin of Our Teeth, he is best known for his sentimental and nostalgic Our Town (1938)."

Thick, royal 8vo, publisher's original cloth in the handomely designed dustjacket. xxvi, 1072 pp. A very fine copy, tight, square and as pristine, the jacket with just a touch of rubbing at the edges, probably from shelving and age.
