        HOW TO COOK A WOLF

New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]., 1942 Fisher, M. F. K. HOW TO COOK A WOLF. Advance Review Copy. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. Plain unprinted white wrappers in dustwrapper. First Edition. 8vo., 261pp. A fine copy in a very good or better dustwrapper that is glued by the publisher to the spine & showing some rubbing there. A rare state of the author's third book; perhaps the only example to come to market in the last 25 years. Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf" in 1942, in the midst of World War II, just as food rationing programs were kicking into high gear with strict limits placed on basics like sugar, butter, meat, & coffee. War-time slogans encouraged American households to "make do, or do without." [Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf." as a reminder of the pleasure - the rapture - you could still find in food, even under a tight budget or war-time rationing. "I early on thought, as long as we have to eat to live, we may as well have fun doing it. There should be some enjoyment of food, as we do with making love, or keeping warm. It's one of the three basic needs of our lives," she said. "How to Cook a Wolf" reads like an issue of Lady's Home Journal, if the editorial staff were taken over by a philosopher with an empty stomach, a slightly tipsy poet and your mischievous, foxy godmother who once kept many lovers. Best lines include: "Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg, until it is broken." On cooking during a war-time black-out: "Use as many fresh things as you can, always, and then trust to luck and your blackout cupboard and what you have decided, inside yourself, about the dignity of man." And this advice, from the chapter called "How to Lure the Wolf": "One way to look your prettiest in the kitchen, and make the wolf think that even if his hot breath whuffs through the keyhole and ruffles your very curls you are nigh adamant, is to put up a little mirror." "How to Cook a Wolf" is part cookbook, part essay collection. Fisher shares practical recipes that can be made cheaply: how to make your own toothpaste; a recipe for fried calves' brains, since that cut of meat was cheaper and more readily available under rationing programs; instructions for a good, low-cost sherry cocktail.] - Weekend America. Rare.. First Edition.

        The Body in the Library

London: Published for the Crime Club by Collins 1942 - First British edition, first printing. Publisher's red-orange cloth, spine lettered in black; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of library shelves with volumes spelling this book's title in red and white. A fine copy, with some light wear to the extremities, a few light spots to the page edges, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor chipping to the spine ends, bright and unfaded spine, tape to the verso reinforcing the spine ends, some light soiling to the rear panel, pencil notations inside the rear flap. Overall, an attractive copy. The Body in the Library is Christie's second novel to feature her spinster amateur detective character Miss Marple, one of Christie's best loved detective figures, along with Hercule Poirot. After making her debut appearance in The Murder at the Vicarage (1930), Miss Marple returns to solve the mystery of how Colonel and Mrs. Bantry's butler wound up dead in their library. Interestingly, The Body in the Library contains nearly as many detectives as it does suspects, with Miss Marple only making an appearance halfway into the novel. This first British edition, published in May 1942, was followed the first U.S. edition, published by Dodd, Mead, and Company in February of the same year. The Body in the Library was adapted for television as part of the BBC's series Miss Marple, which starred Joan Hickson in the title role. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1942. First edition of one of the rarest and most sought after children's classics. Oblong quarto, original blue cloth. Light rubbing to the spine tips, a near fine copy in an excellent unrestored dust jacket that shows a small chip to the crown of the spine and some light wear. Small ink inscription opposite the title page. This book and dust jacket are usually seen with restoration, this copy is exceptionally clean and bright. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box.Once upon a time there was a Little House way out in the country. She was a pretty Little House and she was strong and well built." So begins Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House, winner of the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 1943. "Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children… [including] Mary Ann, the steam shovel… [Burton's books] have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children's literature" (Silvey, 109-10).

[Vintage World War II Poster:] THIS IS NAZI BRUTALITY

Washington, DC: GPO / Office of War Information, 1942.. Folio broadside (38 x 28": 97 x 72 cm). Printed by offset lithography in colors, on recto only, with OWI/GPO imprint and date in extreme lower margin. Folded, clean 5 cm tear in from lower left edge (easily treated if archivally mounted), otherwise an unusually fresh, fine example, with no other signs of use and the colors fresh and undimmed. An exceptionally powerful image, prepared by Shan in response to the massacre at Lidice, depicting a shackled and hooded man against a brick wall, with the dated newswire report of the Lidice massacre superimposed over the figure, and the brilliant red caption: "This is Nazi Brutality." Shahn worked for the OW from the fall of 1942 until the summer of the following year, and although he produced a number of images for the agency, only two were actually utilized -- the others were dismissed as too violent, or as not sufficiently appropriate to the topic of the home front. Shortly thereafter, he began his work with the CIO-PAC.

The War Speeches, seven volumes complete, with a wartime inscription from Churchill to his War Office photographer Into Battle, The Unrelenting Struggle, The End of the Beginning, Onwards to Victory, The Dawn of Liberation, Victory, Secret Session Speeches

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1942. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good . Here is a full set of Churchill's seven war speeches volumes, inscribed in the first volume, Into Battle. The inked, five-line inscription on the first free endpaper reads: Winston S. Churchill / To / Major / W. G. Horton / With best wishes". The inscribed volume is the first edition, tenth printing of December 1943. The rest of the set are first printings. Major William G. Horton was a War Office official photographer assigned to Churchill during the Second World War who took many iconic images of the Prime Minister. Horton began the war as Captain Horton and was with Churchill for the secret "Atlantic Conference" in Placentia Bay off Newfoundland. On 10 August 1941 Horton took a famous photo of Churchill welcoming President Roosevelt and his son, Elliott, aboard HMS Prince of Wales, developing the image in time to have it signed by both Churchill and Roosevelt. In December 1941, Horton was again with Churchill for the voyage on the Duke of York to meet Roosevelt and address the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament. The Imperial War Museum holds numerous wartime images of Churchill taken by Horton, including another notable photo of Churchill in June 1942 making a radio address at his 10 Downing Street desk, clad in his 'siren suit'. In December 1942, as a Christmas gift, Churchill inscribed a copy of The Unrelenting Struggle to then still Captain Horton. Horton's War Office assignment to Churchill lasted the war. Churchill's Official Biography records that Horton took photographs on the morning of 21 February 1944 of Churchill inspecting bomb damage from a German raid the night before, which left shrapnel marks on Kitchener's statue, and broken windows at Downing Street. (Gilbert, Volume VI, p.689, image No.21 at p.684) During the war, Horton was promoted from Captain to Major, certainly with Churchill's blessing, plausibly at his instigation. The seven volumes of Churchill's war speeches encapsulate the soaring and defiant oratory that sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world during the greatest war the world has known. William G. Horton was witness and chronicler of this time, making many of the images that illustrate Churchill's wartime narrative. Though the inscription is undated, it likely occurred between December 1943 publication of this tenth printing and May 1945 publication of the eleventh printing, and thus before Churchill's wartime premiership ended in July 1945. Whether this volume was to congratulate Horton's promotion to Major is unknown. Either way, it is an important wartime inscription, substantiating an association that spanned Churchill's wartime premiership. It is interesting to note that Churchill chose to inscribe his first war speeches volume for Major Horton, rather than one of the later volumes then available. The inscribed book is near-fine. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, a small indentation to the front cover, and trivial wear to extremities. The contents are bright and clean with just a hint of page edge spotting. The dust jacket is unclipped with wear to extremities and hinges, minor chipping to edges and spine ends, and closed tears at the lower front hinge and upper front flap fold. The six volumes completing the set are near-fine examples in very good or better dust jackets. All dust jackets are unclipped first printings. Jacket spines retain bright spine color with only fractional losses at a few spine ends and a tiny hole at the lower Volume III spine. Bindings are uniformly clean and tight with bright spine gilt. Victory is first state, with incorrect pagination at p.177. Contents of all seven volumes are bright with no previous ownership marks. Spotting is confined to page edges of four volumes and blank endpapers of Volume VI. All dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.         ORIGINAL ART - GOUACHE PAINTING OF YOUNG GIRLS SINGING By Leo Politi

Signed and dated 1942. This is a gouache painting by Leo Politi, artist, author, and illustrator, known for his stories in writing and depictions in art of the young children and their parents and culture in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles. This painting is of three young girls singing. The girl in the center is holding a (song? ) book and the eyes of all three are lowered or closed as if following from the book or singing from memory. They all have long sleeve blouses and skirts and are wearing sandals. Completed in reds and neutrals - no background scene. The medium to deep reds and neutrals are vibrant and intense. Signed and dated 1942 in the upper right corner. This painting was previously framed and there is what appears to be a burn mark at what was, most likely, the frame opening which is 10 7/8" high x 9 7/8" wide. There is a pencil border drawn beyond that at 11 " high x 10 1/8" wide. The outside dimensions of the paper are 15 " high x 11 7/8" wide. This print has been professionally top hinged and matted using archival materials to fit an 18' x 14' frame (frame not included) . No other glue was used in matting, however, there are remnants of glue at the edges of the watercolor paper, most likely from the original old framing job. There may have been an original wash for the background of a faint, light green, which has turned a rich, solid beige which is very complimentary to the colors in the painting. The image is modest and charming. There is a half circle indent in the paper near the foot of the girl on the right. The print is clean and without soil or stains. The matboard has been precisely cut, workmanship is professionally fine, the camera work is imperfect. ; .
