[Various locations in California, Nevada, and Utah, 1942. 212 silver gelatin prints in mounting corners. Contemporary brown cloth photograph album, military insignia stamped in gilt on front cover. Extremities worn, mild scuffing to front cover. Light surface wear to a few photos. Overall very good. A World War II-era vernacular photograph album documenting numerous points of interest in California. Several images emanate from a Hollywood location set for one of the sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy feature films produced throughout the decade, likely BAR 20. Present are several clear images of William Boyd (who played the titular character throughout its theatrical and television run) and also at least one image of future SUPERMAN star George Reeves, who starred in five Hopalong Cassidy pictures, the last of which was BAR 20. The album also includes several shots of soldiers from the 322nd Military Police Escort Guard Company. The 322nd MPs were tasked with guarding the Manzanar War Relocation Center, which we know today as the most notable Japanese internment camp of World War II. Distant shots of the camp can be seen, and it is likely that some of the photos of soldiers' barracks and other buildings feature locations inside Manzanar. One photo even seems to picture two Japanese children in a group of people at a pool, indicating that this album might possibly date from just before the massive influx of Japanese- American citizens into Manzinar. A healthy percentage of the photographs include human subjects in various roles on the film sets or in the military installations, sometimes in informal group shots or standing beside landmarks, buildings, or location signs. Locations on the signs include Death Valley, Furnace Creek, and Lone Pine (actually the one location handwritten in the album below one of the photographs). There are also signs indicating the subjects were in Rhyolite, Nevada, and at least one photo places the group in the Great Salt Lake area. In addition to the human subjects, a couple dozen photographs highlight the natural majesty of the western landscape encountered by the photographer. Several mountain scenes are included, along with numerous sweeping vistas of the desertscape of California, Nevada, and Utah. A fascinating record of a serviceman's (or possibly a Hollywood location scout's) journeys in the American West around 1942, with images from Hopalong Cassidy film sets and also shots of the most notorious American Japanese internment camp during World War II.

4°, 16 pp. full page illustrations printed in red, green and black, stapled (Very Good, wrappers slightly dusty, soft folds in margins). - Sukhumi, Abkhazia (Georgia): February 1942. A magnificent rare magazine with anti-Nazi caricatures by Abkhazian artists, printed in red, green, and black, was issued during WWII in Sukhumi. - This highly decorative satirical magazine with full size caricatures, printed in green, black and red only, was published in 1942, the year of the Battle of Caucasus and just before the Battle of Stalingrad. The Russian army, here always marked with red colour, is shown overpowering, tricking and beating up somehow ridiculous looking Germans. This is a superb example of WWII Russian propaganda and printing in provincial centers. According to the imprint on p. 2 the magazine was printed in 3000 examples. We could not trace any other examples of the magazines on the market nor in institutions worldwide.

Top edge gilt with new marbled end-papers. Very light toning and the occasional spotting to the text block. Free from inscriptions. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior Demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter.         Springtime in the Rockies (Original screenplay for the 1942 film)

Twentieth Century Fox, Los Angeles 1942 - Revised Final Script for the 1942 film musical, "Springtime in the Rockies," directed by Irving Cummings, based on the screenplay for the 1936 comedy "Second Honeymoon," written for the screen by Walter Bullock, Ken Englund, Jacques Thery, and Philip Wylie and starring Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, John Payne, Cesar Romero, Edward Everett Horton, and Harry James. Betty Grable's starring debut remains one the greatest Technicolor musicals produced by Fox in the 1940s, making grand use of the "let's move the action from the city to the country" approach, employing Harry James and his orchestra at their peak, and pulling out all the stops on the musical numbers--with Carmen Miranda's version of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and the debut of the classic song, "I Had the Craziest Dream" topping things off. Red titled wrappers, stamped REVISED FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped project No. 763 and copy No. 47, dated June 11, 1942, and with the holograph file notation "Env. #1443" at the top right corner.       Washington D.C., 1942. Fine. HAUNTINGLY ELOQUENT LETTER BY AMERICAN ICON ELEANOR ROOSEVELT ON THE SACRIFICES OF WAR. This letter, typed and signed by revered First Lady and humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt on White House letterhead and dated April 1, 1942 (World War II), is addressed to Mr. Porter, and reads in full: The White House Washington April 1, 1942 Dear Mr. Porter:     I am glad to know that you have enlisted and my very best wishes go to you into the service.  I am sure that you will gain much from it and our main job right now is to win the war, no matter at what cost.  It means a sacrifice for everybody and, while the plans we make for the future may not materialize, it is well for all of us to concentrate now on the job at hand and gain a victory that will make it possible to live a happy and normal life after this is all over.        Good luck, and I shall be glad to hear from you from time to time.                                         Very sincerely yours,                                        [signed] Eleanor Roosevelt "America's isolation from war ended on December 7, 1941, when Japan staged a surprise attack on American military installations in the Pacific. The most devastating strike came at Pearl Harbor, the Hawaiian naval base where much of the US Pacific Fleet was moored. In a two-hour attack, Japanese warplanes sank or damaged 18 warships and destroyed 164 aircraft. Over 2,400 servicemen and civilians lost their lives [...] In the months after Pearl Harbor, the nation swiftly mobilized its human and material resources for war. The opportunities and sacrifices of wartime would change America in profound, and sometimes unexpected, ways" (The National World War II Museum). And change it did. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the necessity not only for change, but also for sacrifice. In a radio broadcast the night of the Pearl Harbor attack, she reflected: "In the meantime, we the people are already prepared for action.  For months now the knowledge that something of this kind might happen has been hanging over our heads and yet it seemed impossible to believe, impossible to drop the everyday things of life and feel that there was only one thing which was important - preparation to meet an enemy no matter where he struck [...] We know what we have to face and we know that we are ready to face it…. To the young people of the nation, I must speak a word tonight [...] I have faith in you. I feel as though I was standing upon a rock and that rock is my faith in my fellow citizens" (Eleanor Roosevelt's radio broadcast the evening after the Pearl Harbor attack, December 7, 1941). April 1942 marked a tumultuous time for the United States and for the Roosevelts, as recent intervention in World War II had reaped disastrous results, with Japan continuing its string of military successes in the Pacific Theater.  However, these trying times imbued the First Lady with a sense of duty: "Consequently, Eleanor Roosevelt increased her already daunting pace to one that amazed reporters, admirals, defense workers, and soldiers. Eleanor Roosevelt believed that promoting democracy at home and keeping up people's spirits was a vital part of the war effort. Eleanor Roosevelt did this in many ways. She strongly supported women working outside the home and urged their employment in defense industries... She played a key role in convincing FDR to establish the Fair Employment Practices Commission, which outlawed racial discrimination in industries that received federal contracts, urged equal treatment for blacks in the military, and helped to ensure that black units, such as the Tuskegee Airmen, had the opportunity to engage in combat. Finally, She urged citizens to accept volunteer assignments and tried to make those assignments useful" (George Washington University).   Not only a hero in the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt also made several trips to decimated war zones, including the British Isles and Guadalcanal.  Aptly, she reflected in her syndicated newspaper column "My Day", "if the generation that fights today is to lay the foundations of which a peaceful world can be built, all of us who have seen the war close range must remember what we see and carry a crusading spirit into all of our work." This letter, in addition to being composed in a year of escalating tensions in the Pacific and heightened domestic anxiety, is significant as it reflects the kind of empathetic pragmatism that characterized the groundbreaking and generous wartime work of Eleanor Roosevelt. Washington, D.C.: April 1, 1942.  Quarto, one page.  Signed in ink at the end of the letter.  Usual folds, otherwise in fine condition. A rare and poignant letter by one of America's most cherished first ladies.
