Washington D.C., 1942. Fine. HAUNTINGLY ELOQUENT LETTER BY AMERICAN ICON ELEANOR ROOSEVELT ON THE SACRIFICES OF WAR. This letter, typed and signed by revered First Lady and humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt on White House letterhead and dated April 1, 1942 (World War II), is addressed to Mr. Porter, and reads in full: The White House Washington April 1, 1942 Dear Mr. Porter:     I am glad to know that you have enlisted and my very best wishes go to you into the service.  I am sure that you will gain much from it and our main job right now is to win the war, no matter at what cost.  It means a sacrifice for everybody and, while the plans we make for the future may not materialize, it is well for all of us to concentrate now on the job at hand and gain a victory that will make it possible to live a happy and normal life after this is all over.        Good luck, and I shall be glad to hear from you from time to time.                                         Very sincerely yours,                                        [signed] Eleanor Roosevelt "America's isolation from war ended on December 7, 1941, when Japan staged a surprise attack on American military installations in the Pacific. The most devastating strike came at Pearl Harbor, the Hawaiian naval base where much of the US Pacific Fleet was moored. In a two-hour attack, Japanese warplanes sank or damaged 18 warships and destroyed 164 aircraft. Over 2,400 servicemen and civilians lost their lives [...] In the months after Pearl Harbor, the nation swiftly mobilized its human and material resources for war. The opportunities and sacrifices of wartime would change America in profound, and sometimes unexpected, ways" (The National World War II Museum). And change it did. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the necessity not only for change, but also for sacrifice. In a radio broadcast the night of the Pearl Harbor attack, she reflected: "In the meantime, we the people are already prepared for action.  For months now the knowledge that something of this kind might happen has been hanging over our heads and yet it seemed impossible to believe, impossible to drop the everyday things of life and feel that there was only one thing which was important - preparation to meet an enemy no matter where he struck [...] We know what we have to face and we know that we are ready to face it…. To the young people of the nation, I must speak a word tonight [...] I have faith in you. I feel as though I was standing upon a rock and that rock is my faith in my fellow citizens" (Eleanor Roosevelt's radio broadcast the evening after the Pearl Harbor attack, December 7, 1941). April 1942 marked a tumultuous time for the United States and for the Roosevelts, as recent intervention in World War II had reaped disastrous results, with Japan continuing its string of military successes in the Pacific Theater.  However, these trying times imbued the First Lady with a sense of duty: "Consequently, Eleanor Roosevelt increased her already daunting pace to one that amazed reporters, admirals, defense workers, and soldiers. Eleanor Roosevelt believed that promoting democracy at home and keeping up people's spirits was a vital part of the war effort. Eleanor Roosevelt did this in many ways. She strongly supported women working outside the home and urged their employment in defense industries... She played a key role in convincing FDR to establish the Fair Employment Practices Commission, which outlawed racial discrimination in industries that received federal contracts, urged equal treatment for blacks in the military, and helped to ensure that black units, such as the Tuskegee Airmen, had the opportunity to engage in combat. Finally, She urged citizens to accept volunteer assignments and tried to make those assignments useful" (George Washington University).   Not only a hero in the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt also made several trips to decimated war zones, including the British Isles and Guadalcanal.  Aptly, she reflected in her syndicated newspaper column "My Day", "if the generation that fights today is to lay the foundations of which a peaceful world can be built, all of us who have seen the war close range must remember what we see and carry a crusading spirit into all of our work." This letter, in addition to being composed in a year of escalating tensions in the Pacific and heightened domestic anxiety, is significant as it reflects the kind of empathetic pragmatism that characterized the groundbreaking and generous wartime work of Eleanor Roosevelt. Washington, D.C.: April 1, 1942.  Quarto, one page.  Signed in ink at the end of the letter.  Usual folds, otherwise in fine condition. A rare and poignant letter by one of America's most cherished first ladies.

        We of the Never-Never

London, Hutchinson, 151st thousand [1942]/ 1908. Octavo, 248 pages with a map plus 16 plates. Black cloth; trifling signs of use and age; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper, fresh and bright, having been removed, folded and stored since new (albeit with heavy vertical and horizontal creases and a small tear at the rear). Provenance: Edward Edgar Pescott (1872-1954), horticulturalist, naturalist and author, with his 1942 bookplate (by George Perrottet). Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from the author, Jeannie Gunn (nee Taylor) to Pescott (small quarto, 3 pages, 29 July 1940, complete with the envelope addressed by Gunn). She begins with thanks for his recent birthdays greetings to her, but the bulk of the letter concerns matters (not) arising in Pescott's 'little Bonwick book.... Personally I would like to say from myself how much I appreciate your most tactful leaving unsaid of any reference to poor little Auntie Annie's first & disastrous marriage that left only bitterness & recrimination in the hearts of so many of those most nearly concerned - Poor children! Auntie Annie was just a gay spoiled little child of 16 - & gay and spoiled she remained all through her 90 years. And poor Uncle John was just a broken-hearted boy in his young twenties at her desertion of him in his bitter adversity ... There is just one thing in it all to dear old James Bonwick's honour - He remained the truest & most loyal friend to John Taylor's parents all their life - especially perhaps to my mother!'. Auntie Annie was Esther Annie Bonwick, one of the children of James Bonwick.

Archive of Silhouette Art: Shakespearean plays, opera and ballet by a Southern Woman Artist

1942. Very good condition. An extensive archive of hundreds of exquisitely cut paper silhouettes by a New Orleans artist with New York city connections, the majority of which depict Shakespearean plays, operas performed at the Met, ballet, and literary works. These are the works of Mrs. Katherine Gourdin Smith of New Orleans, whose silhouette work centers on contemporary theatrical work being performed in New York City. Katherine Baldwin Robertson Smith (19 Sep 1864 -19 Apr 1943), was born in Louisiana at a tumultuous moment in the history of the U.S. On September 2nd, 1864, Atlanta fell to the Northern troops. On September 5th, voters in Louisiana who had taken an oath of loyalty to the United States ratified a state constitution abolishing slavery. On November 8th, Abraham Lincoln was reelected as president of the United States. By April 9th, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House. Five days later, President Lincoln was assassinated. Her father, William Robertson (1819 - 1890) graduated from West Point in 1840. He served as a 2nd Lieut. in the Florida War against the Seminole Indians, 1841-42 and in garrison at Baton Rouge, La., 1842-43. He resigned from the Army in July 1843 and was a planter in New Iberia, La. Her mother, Eliza Ann Marsh Robertson was born in Petit Anse Island (now Avery Island), Iberia Parish, La. In May 1844, she married William Robertson (1819-1890), with whom she had ten children. The artist's husband, Robert N. Gourdin Smith, mentioned in the "Register of Carolina Huguenots", was a cotton futures trader in New Orleans with the firm Smith & Hayne in New Orleans, (he is mentioned in the 1905 and 1913 editions of the "Cotton Trade Journal".) The New Orleans Social Register in 1922 cites the artist with husband R. N. Gourdin Smith. Katherine, her husband and parents are all buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill holds a diary/scrapbook of Eliza Robertson (1849-1856,) apparently written at New Iberia, Iberia Parish, La., recording the daily life of a Louisiana gentlewoman. Robertson's brief though detailed daily entries document her participation in food production, clothing production, child care, and other household tasks, often noting which chores were performed by slaves and which she performed herself. Social activities are also described in detail, including arrivals and departures of guests, food served, the celebration of Christmas, games played, and events attended. The silhouettes of Shakespeare plays include Hamlet, Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and The Tempest. The opera silhouettes include Gounod's 'Faust', Pagliacci's 'Punchinello' and the French comic opera, 'La Cigale'. The ballet silhouettes are of Prokofiev's 'Cinderella'. In addition there are silhouettes in an envelope marked "Rip" which are likely for the operetta by Robert Planquette based on the stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. The artist's process is shown, as she drew her subjects on light paper and then executed them in cut silhouettes in black. One envelope contains a photographic negative of Gourdin Smith's silhouette art which is marked "Faust as [illegible] at Metropolitan Opera House N. Y. 18--. Jean de Reske, Faust" [3 other performers' names are illegible]. Jean de Reszke, the famed Polish tenor, appeared in Faust at the Met in 1883. This negative suggests that perhaps the artist was a magic lantern illustrator. A newspaper clipping published towards the end of her life shows her interest in W.W.II. It is a silhouette illustration pertaining to the British lend lease bill of World War II. The image depicts Mother England beckoning to her daughter in America, who stands holding a miniature fleet of American ships on strings at the ready to sail across the sea in support of her deserving parent. Each silhouette in its original envelope, some with the topics labeled in pencil by the artist. Miscellaneous pieces include dogs, rabbits, girls, baskets, braziers, encadre frames, cupids, honeysuckle, Mrs. Merriweather, and 'Christmas Pie". One of the envelopes provides the artist's address at 1718 Cadiz Street, New Orleans. A total of 41 envelopes, each one enclosing at least 20 silhouettes so that the total number approaches 1,000. Some of them as small as 1/2" in height, others up to 5" high; along with 4 separate sleeves of additional silhouettes, including young men and women, characters in 18th century attire including damsels in distress and gentlemen in britches with young boys carrying hatchets, a series of 5 goats, and a series of wrought iron entry gates. Some of the silhouettes cut from white paper, some cut from black. A remarkable archive reflecting a life long career in silhouette art by an American woman artist.

        Der Untermensch

1942. NATIONALSOZIALISTISCHE Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei. Reichsführer-SS; Hauptamt. Der Untermensch. 50 pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs. Folio, bound in original photographic illustrated wrappers in a new black cloth folding box. Berlin: Vertrieb Nordland Verlag, 1942.|~| |~||~||~||~||~||~| A truly grim and unsettling piece of German wartime propaganda illustrating and describing Der Untermensch or 'subhuman'. Created as a means to dehumanize victims of the Nazi's atrocities, this publication juxtaposes airbrushed photographs of happy, healthy German citizens with darkened images of Jews and other Eastern Europeans. Most disturbing are the illustrations of starving Jewish and Soviet children captioned 'All this is the result of the Jewish politics regarding families. The sea of bitter children's tears, which cannot be dried even through hundreds of years' (Translated from the German). A rare survival, as most propaganda of this sort would have been destroyed following the war. Near fine.

Bábos. Nemzeti Bábszinjáték! [Puppeteer. National Puppet Theatre.]

(Sarkadi), (Budapest) 1942 - Lithograph poster. Ca. 86 × 63 cm. István Árpád Rév (1898-1977) was a Hungarian graphic artist and puppeteer who had a one-man puppet theatre. He was the director, the dramaturge and the puppeteer of the theatre. He developed a special technique to design and to move the puppets. Apparently he was also the designer of the advertisement posters for his theatre and this is an example of such pictures. The puppeteer who holds the the puppets is the caricature self-portrait of Rév. Trimmed at lower edge. Otherwise in fine condition.

        Pied Piper

London: Heinemann, 1942. A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1942. A very good book with a fairly lengthy inscription to the front endpaper. Some light spotting. In a very good clipped wrapper with some loss to the head of the spine and to the corners. The correct first issue dust wrapper with the review for 'Landfall' to the rear. Excessively rare and very difficult to find with the original dust wrapper given the poor quality of the War time paper.
