[Vintage World War II Poster:] SHE'S A SWELL PLANE - GIVE US MORE! MORE PRODUCTION

Washington, DC: GPO / War Production Board [1942].. Washington, DC: GPO / War Production Board [1942].. Folio photolithographed broadside (40 x 28"; 102 x 72 cm). Folded, as issued. Short closed tear at lower edge, a few minor wrinkles at edges of folds, minor breaks at apexes of a couple of folds, with a slight trace of tanning along folds, otherwise a near fine, fresh, unused example. A bold image by Riggs promoting increased homefront production, dominated by a large waist-up figure of an American airman raising his goggles with his right hand and gesturing "thumbs up" with his left. Robert Riggs (1896- 1970) was in his heyday one of the best- known artists and illustrators in the United States. After studies at the Art Students League and service during World War I, Riggs settled in Philadelphia, his home base for the rest of his life. In the 1930s and '40s he rose to national prominence as an illustrator, lithographer, and commercial artist, producing well-known images of boxers and circuses (two life-long obsessions), and of soldiers during World War II. In 1940, around the peak of his career as an illustrator, his drawings commanded $750- $1500 each, and his name was as well-known in the trade as that of Norman Rockwell. Curiously, at a recent auction of African American printed, manuscript and visual material, an example of this poster was offered, quite tenuously making the assertion that the image is of a Tuskegee airman. On the basis of that assertion, the example offered there realized $2400.

[Vintage World War II Poster]: A CARELESS WORD ... A NEEDLESS SINKING

Washington, DC: Office of War Information / GPO,. Washington, DC: Office of War Information / GPO,. 1942. Folio color photolithographic broadside (37 x 29", 94 x 70 cm). Folded, as issued. Faint tanning to folds on blank verso, otherwise a lovely, fresh, unused copy. One of the several dramatic posters published by the OWI and other agencies based on paintings by Fischer focusing on the service of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine after the US's entry into the war. This poster emphasizes the importance of maintaining secrecy surrounding the sailings of merchant vessels. In the foreground, a crew of seamen, two of them badly injured, pull away in a life boat from a flaming and largely destroyed ship that fills the background. This is the larger format of two in which this poster was printed. The German-born Fischer, who left his home country at the age of 15, was sworn in as a Lt. Commander in the Coast Guard, and based on his talent as a commercial illustrator, assigned the duty of portraying visually the involvement of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine in the war effort. Fischer's civilian career included assignments for top US periodicals, as well as illustrating editions of MOBY DICK and other classic works of sea literature.

This original World War II-era poster shows a side profile of a soldier in the middle of shooting a water cooled machine gun in the darkness. It was produced as a work incentive on the home front. The poster is in very good condition and mounted on linen. Original folds slightly visible. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was an illustrator and painter and his subject matter and style came to epitomize American everyday life in the 20th century.         An Address Delivered Before Members of the Congress December 26, 1941, the copy of a contemporary member of Congress

Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1942. Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1942. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Here is a beautiful limited edition of Churchill's famous address to Congress only weeks after Pearl Harbor, formerly owned by a contemporary U.S. Congressman. In the days after the Japanese attack, the United States formally entered the Second World War, marking the end of Britain's solitary stand against Hitler's Germany, which it had sustained since the fall of France. Churchill immediately decided to travel to the United States, and on the 12th of December 1941 he boarded the battleship Duke of York and began the 10-day trip across the Atlantic - a perilous journey at a time when German U-Boats plagued the North Atlantic. Churchill addressed the U.S. Congress on the 26th and the Canadian Parliament on the 30th. Churchill's speech to Congress was sober, resolved, and eloquently defiant, but of course also featured the sparkle of Churchillian wit, which was irrepressible even in the dark hours of the war: "I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way around, I might have got here on my own." His speech was also an important personal introduction to the elected leaders he needed to embrace and sustain the alliance so vital to his nation. This is one of 1,000 copies printed and has interesting provenance, having belonged to a U.S. Congressman serving at the time of Churchill's speech. The front pastedown bears the inked signature of "Karl Stefan, MC". Stefan (1884-1951) served as a Member of Congress from Nebraska for nearly 17 years, from January 1935 until his death in October 1951 - the same month that Churchill began his second and final premiership. Condition of this copy is near-fine. The maroon cloth binding is tight, clean, and square, with sharp corners and minor bumps to the spine ends. The fragile paper title label is intact, with only fractional nicks at the perimeter. The contents are clean with no spotting and no markings other than the ownership signature on the front pastedown. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A163.7, Woods A84(c)

Vollständiges Manuskript seines Liedes "Song of the Free" nach dem Text von Archibald MacLeish "for Gertrude Lawrence as a token of my undying affection". - "Song of the Free" war eines von neun Liedern von Weill's Liederzyklus "Songs for the War Effort".

The rear cover bears the same vertical stripes in blue and red as well as crossed French and British Flags and olive branches. The pamphlet is 30 pages in length, measures 8.375 x 5.625 inches, and is wire stitched. Included are excerpts of varying lengths from Churchill's addresses or speeches of: 9 May and 5 October 1938, 19 May and 3 September 1939; 19 May, 17 June (complete broadcast), 18 June, 25 June, 4 July, 14 July, 20 August, 8 October, and 21 October 1940; 9 April, 14 July (entire message to General de Gaulle), 15 July, 9 September, 10 November, and 30 December 1941; 10 May (broadcast) , 10 November, and 29 November (broadcast) 1942. The contents include two black and white illustrations, including a photo of Churchill. The cover versos each bear a list - in French - of wartime brochures offered by the publisher, who appear to have issued material of interest to French forces, citizens, and speakers, mainly in French, about the progress of the war. Condition is near-fine given the age, fragility, and Indian origin of the pamphlet. The covers are firmly attached and entirely intact with no tears or losses. Trivial wear at extremities, mild toning, and very light soiling are the only exterior flaws. The original single binding staple remains tight with only light surface corrosion. Interestingly and testifying to the pamphlet's wartime Indian origin, the lower rear cover bears Indian postal stamps in black ink, one circular and no longer quite distinguishable, the second square and reading in three lines: "D.L.O / BOMBAY / 16 OCT. 44". The contents remain clean and bright with no spotting or previous ownership marks. The pamphlet is protected in a clear, removable, archival quality sleeve.         The Quick Brown Fox

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942 New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. First Edition. A hard-boiled novel set in a Mid-Western town which is taken over by "native terrorists who make the gangsters look like boyscouts;" the men are opposed by a contingent of brave men who eventually regain control of the town. Though the novel is clearly written with a hard-boiled framework, given Burnett's political leanings, the plot clearly contains elements portraying a fascist, dictatorial force terrorizing a group of people, and the people's response to restore order. Among the scarcest of the author's books, and one that seldom turns up in any sort of collectible dustjacket. First Printing. Octavo (20cm); orange cloth, with with titles and design stamped in red and black on spine and front panel; red topstain; dustjacket; 267pp. Some offsett from binders glue to pastedowns, with a barely perceptible degree of sunning to spine, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, with a corresponding degree of light sunning to spine, else Fine.

Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, Volumes I-V (The Mission Era: The Finding of Texas 1519-1693; The Winning of Texas 1693-1791; The Missions at Work 1731-1761; The Passing of the Missions 1762-1782; The End of the Spanish Regime, 1780-1810)

Austin, TX: Von Boeckmann-Jones Company, 1942. Austin, TX: Von Boeckmann-Jones Company, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First five volumes (of 7) of "the best history of the three centuries of Spanish and Mexican Texas [with] the first detailed account of literally dozens of expeditions and settlements in Texas" (Jenkins, Basic Texas Books). 8vo, original embossed blue cloth; c. 2200 pp in total; index in each volume, many plates and folding maps. Some wear to extremities, a few previous owner's names, old insect damage to the final few pages of all but one volume (no loss of text). Otherwise quite clean and sound. Jenkins writes that this work opens up a world of entirely new history for the Big Bend Region and for South Texas and provides by far the most complete account of the missions in the San Antonio-Goliad region and in East Texas," and Tate (Indians of Texas) says it is an "invaluable source of information on all phases of Catholic influence in Texas. Detailed information on Indian tribes from the coastal and eastern sections of the state is extremely valuable, especially in the first four volumes. No researcher can afford to overlook this seminal work.
