Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc., 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Minor wear to spine tips and darkening to the top of the front cover affecting the top of the title lettering. Very Good or better and quite scarce. Pictorial boards depicting ships and planes around the island of the title. The first, suppressed binding and very scarce. It seems Rukeyser was dissatisfied with the illustration on the cover, and most copies were destroyed. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the poet on the title page to noted collector Eugene L. Delafield "a long time later" in 1952. Delafield has noted in pencil on the front pastedown a publication date of 21 August 1942 and on the copyright page: "circa 200 in this binding." An early if not the first book of American poetry published whose primary subject matter is World War II. Wake Island, attacked on the same day as Pearl Harbor, was the site of the first Japanese defeat of the war, though Japan would take the island later that month.

Columbia 1942 - Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 105 cm.) one sheet poster style A, USA. Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth, Adolphe Menjou, Xavier Cugat and Orchestra; dir: William A. Seiter; Columbia. Lovely musical, based on a plot of Aristophanes. With an excellent score by Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer, the film presented songs which became standards, including "I'm Old Fashioned," and "Dearly Beloved." Of course, Rita Hayworth proved to be Fred Astaire's most elegant dance partner. The image of Hayworth dancing with Astaire is usually attributed to Hurrell. On linen, there has been routine background retouching, ABOUT FINE.

The Song of The Cotton Picker. With photos by Carl Julien

Clinton, South Carolina: Jacob's Press. 1942, 39. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's red rexine, leather effect cloth with onlay photgraphic title label to front board. Bright and sharp, small square of fading to head of spine. In a very good dustwrapper, frayed and chipped to head of spine, some light edgewear elsewhere, closed tears to upper front corner and rear panel, a couple of small splash marks, eseentially strong, clean and respectable. The contents are a collection of poems and contemporary photographs written in a manner guaranteed to make most people's heads hurt. The introduction by Archibald Rutledge contains such insightful gems as "It has validity, charm and all the whimsical naivete of the Negro himself." Awesome. The various poems, apparently highly thought of at the time, have titles like "Whar De Massa?" and "Whar Do Mose Lib?" presumably there was no other way at the time of capturing the "meaning and feeling of the South Carolina Negro", which suggests to me that people maybe weren't trying hard enough. Inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf; "With every good wish to Marjorie Cawte - Madeline Horres Hantske Aug 23, 1954". Interesting, in its historical context, and scarce in dustwrapper.

Two Autograph Letters Signed, one in English and Yiddish, 4pp on folded 8vo sheet, June 7, 1942; and one in Yiddish, 4pp on one large 8vo sheet, Great Neck, NY, March 31, 1943

In both war-time letters to his cousin, Charles Getz, Weber writes mostly of support for Russia against the Nazis but he also discusses his art. In the letter dated 1942, Weber offers Charles congratulations on his marriage. Weber comments on his cousin no longer being lonely. "One can read the greatest books... but reading is not living. Life without human (and (social) [sic] contact is pretty barren." Weber continues by commenting on an "excellent appreciation of my work in the 'Morning Freiheit' by Dr. Kloomok... his is one of the best Jewish writers...." Dr. Isaac Kloomok was a scholar who wrote about Jewish artists, including Weber and Marc Chagall. Weber writes of current events. "At the moment the news from Russia is not so very good, and you know how grieved I am, but in the end the Nazi bastards will be conquered and sent to hell for all time!...." He continues in English until the last paragraph which he writes in Yiddish. "I would like to apologize for not writing in Yiddish, it takes too long…I was in Chicago but after my lecture in the museum m whole time was take up by receptions…." He signs, "Max - Motel," and continues in an end not in English. "They are talking about a second front while Hitler has opened four fronts. How long can Soviet Russia keep on fighting 90% of this war?" In the second letter written almost a year later and fully in Yiddish Weber apologizes for not writing for some time saying that he had to prepare for two exhibitions, "one in New York [possibly the 1942 Paul Rosenberg & Co. gallery exhibition], and the other, for The Carnegie Institute, museum of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania [the Carnegie Institute exhibition took place in 1943]." He says that the other reason for not writing was because he was in a bad mood as his son "Meinard was drafted on the 29th January; he had to interrupt his studies in college." Weber then opens up to his cousin about how he feels, specifically about current world problems. "I got used to the thought of the terrible war lead by the 'Capitalist locust'... You are... a more decent human being than the millions of professional 'Intellectuals'. A person can be very learned, and despite his knowledge be a moron, with lack of insight about himself, who becomes an enemy of himself and an enemy of other people... my heart aches about the fact we witness that after the accomplishment of the Soviet Union to rescue the world from the Nazi snake, she is being criticized and made fun of by her own allies... Now... a trial of two labor leaders in Poland. It's unbelievable how the God of the capitalists provides them with material, accusing them the same way as the previous traitors did at the last trial." He continues in this vein, upset at the "capitalists" and closes by saying that his son, Meinard, is a colonel in the Chemical Impregnating Division of the army. He signs, "Max - Mordecai.

Innen teils etwas fleckig, teils etwas angerändert. Sonst und insgesamt jedoch gutes, attraktives Exemplar..

        The Quick Brown Fox

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. First Edition. A hard-boiled novel set in a Mid-Western town which is taken over by "native terrorists who make the gangsters look like boyscouts;" the men are opposed by a contingent of brave men who eventually regain control of the town. Though the novel is clearly written with a hard-boiled framework, given Burnett's political leanings, the plot clearly contains elements portraying a fascist, dictatorial force terrorizing a group of people, and the people's response to restore order. Among the scarcest of the author's books, and one that seldom turns up in any sort of collectible dustjacket. First Printing. Octavo (20cm); orange cloth, with with titles and design stamped in red and black on spine and front panel; red topstain; dustjacket; 267pp. Some offsett from binders glue to pastedowns, with a barely perceptible degree of sunning to spine, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, with a corresponding degree of light sunning to spine, else Fine.

        VVV Volume I, Number 1, 1942

New York City, 1942. New York City. 1942. 1st printing. 4to, pp. 72. . This is the first issue of the famous Surrealist magazine "VVV", published in New York City in 1942 under the editorship of sculptor and photographer David Hare, with Andre Breton (often referred to as "the founder of modern Surrealism), Max Ernst and (later) Marcel Duchamp acting as editorial advisors. It provided an important outlet for European Surrealist artists, displaced as a result of World War Two, and gave them an opportunity to communicate with their American colleagues. Aime Cesare, Philip Lamantia, and Robert Motherwell were also associated with, and contributed to, the publication during its short life of only four issues (the second and third being combined into one). This copy is in the original stiff card covers, with the front cover artwork by Max Ernst. Contributors include Lionel Abel, William Carlos Williams, Andre Masson, Andre Breton, Claude Levi-Strauss, Robert Motherwell and others. It is illustrated throughout by Bouchard, G. de Chirico, Ernst, Hare, Matta, G. Onslow-Ford, Irving Penn, Picasso, Kurt Seligmann etc. The front cover is noticeably sunned, with two small discolourations to the right front. The rear cover is also sunned, but only at the edges. The contents remain tightly-bound and are in excellent condition. .

Handschriftlicher Briefwechsel mit Ferdinand Wessiak. 29 Briefe, 15 Karten, 1 Erzählung betitelt "Die Maus" 2 Wunschkarten mit 1 Holzschnitt und 1 Reproduktion, 1 Karte von Eva Kobinger.

1942 - 1942 - circa 1972. Briefkorrespondenz meist gelocht.

- Vgl. Gustav Spann: Untersuchungen zur Anatomischen Wissenschaft in Wien 1938-1945. Senatsprojekt der Universität Wien. Eine Zusammenfassung. The Raven

1942 - Philadelphia: Dorrance and Company, 1943 [1943]. 8vo, 562 p., black boards with spine and front panel stamped in gilt. First edition of the author's first book, a novel based on the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Though Williams' would go on to publish at least one additional novel ('Have you Been to the River?', Exposition Press, 1952) he is today best remembered for his work as a black historian and sociologist, who advanced the study of black history in his pioneering studies The Rebirth of African Civilization and The Destruction of Black Civilization. Light wrinkling to cloth on lower front and rear boards, with a small section of wrinkling to middle rear board, light mottling to page ends, but a fairly sharp and clean copy overall. In a VG jacket, with light edgewear and chipping, loss to upper spine and area along rear panel adjacent, and with thin archival tape repair along verso of rear spine joint, but an attractive example of the scarce jacket, with price of $3.50 intact. This copy has been inscribed by Williams on the fep: "With Best Wishes, Chancellor Williams, Dec 22, 1954". A very presentable copy of a scarce work of African American fiction.
