Chinese Jades in the Stanley Charles Nott Collection, Being an Illustrated Descriptive Record: Exhaustively Reviewing the Symbolic Ritualistic Appurtenances of Chinese Jades and their Various Sacrificial Usages

West Palm Beach, FL: The Norton Gallery and School of Art , 1942. Printed in the USA by The Record Company, St. Augustine, FL. This edition was limited to 1,000 numbered copies, of which the present volume is No. 906. Signed on the limitation page in a neat black ink hand by the author. At the time of publication Stanley Charles Nott was Director of Oriental Art at the Norton Gallery and School of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. 12.25 x 9.25 inches. Thick, heavy-duty contemporary binding in bright green leatherette (not genuine leather). Fairly crisp gilt-stamped ruling and lettering to the front board and to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail. Upper corners moderately bumped and lower corners gently bumped, with very light abrading. Moderate shelf pull along the bottom edge of the boards. The leatherette binding generally clean and in very good condition. Some vertical semi-creasing along the spine but no cracking or brittleness. The text block is bound in with exceptional sturdiness. Handsome decorative pastedowns/FEPs in shades of light jade green. Note that, as to each of the two pastedowns, there is a thin, horizontal strip of tape remnant, an after-effect of a dust jacket that was once taped down and merely a minor cosmetic issue. XVI and 536 pages of text. Color frontispiece portrait of the author and collector, the portrait in near fine condition, with faintest spotting at the outermost margins, outside the plate. With XVI B&W full-page figures (line drawings) and with CXVIII plates, all full-page and all on semi glossy heavy stock. Note that at the lower fore-edge of pages 498-536 there is a very small, narrow and faint tide-mark, about 1 inch long horizontally and at most 1/4 inch into the plain outer margin of Plates CXV-CXVIII and not at all into the plates themselves. The 118 plates, illustrating 107 specimens of jade-work, are all in fine or near fine condition. Index pages 527 and 533 with light fingering/soiling marks near the outer fore-edge, not affecting the readability of the pages. Else an impressively clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. A Very Good Minus copy. Somewhat rare and hard to find, at least in this condition. Included are two semi-glossy, color photo-copies of the front, spine and flap of the original dust jacket, the dust jacket now perished.. First Edition. Leatherette. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

        Pablo Picasso

Cahiers d'Art, Paris, various, Softcover, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: GoodZERVOS, CHRISTIAN. Pablo Picasso, vols. 1-14 (in 15), Paris: Cahiers d'Art, 1942-1963. Folios, almost half of the monumental 33-volume set that comprises the catalogue raisonne Zervos prepared in collaboration with Picasso, original wraps, glassine overwraps. All plates are black and white (photogravures) as Picasso reportedly felt color reproduction of his work would be inaccurate. This portion of the set represents the first 50 years of the artist's career. All volumes here except Vol. 1 have their original glassine overwraps. The browning you see in the photo is the aged glassine, although there is age-toning throughout this set. All books collate complete, all text in French. This work is not in Arntzen & Rainwater, and OCLC locates few full sets in institutions (Clark Institute has one). KVK finds full sets more numerous worldwide (Heidelberg, Leipzig, Australia and elsewhere). Scarce, highly collectible, with recent auctions for the full set bringing $60,000 to $130,000, and even the cheapened new reprint costs $20,000. This work is frequently rebound as the covers are so fragile, but the interior leaves are on good, thick stock. These books have not been rebound, perfected, nor otherwise dickied with. Total weight is 31 kilos or 68 pounds, shipping will be in 3 or 4 boxes, worldwide, but not inexpensive outside the U.S. 1.         SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (1942)

Paramount 1942 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Joel McCrea, Veronica Lake, Robert Warwick, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Porter Hall, dir: Preston Sturges; Paramount. One of Hollywood's top classic films and considered to be one of the best films ever about America. Though certainly a film which was a huge gamble during the days of the slick Hollywood studio system, the system sometimes afforded and encouraged experimentation and creativity and, for a few years, Preston Sturges was allowed this -- even so far as to criticize the very industry which allowed him his freedom, as he did in this film. A director of escapist films, living the posh life, decides he wants to make a film about the realities of the downtrodden and poor. He becomes a homeless tramp to learn about this lifestyle, and the film becomes Sturges' study of the hypocrisy of America, which still rings true. In this image we see Joel McCrea as film director John Lloyd Sullivan and Veronica Lake, simply characterized as "the Girl," during a scene at the film maker's posh Beverly Hills home. There are tiny pinholes at each of the four corners and at the top and bottom center and slight smudges in the blank white background. ABOUT FINE.

THE BLUE DAHLIA: RARE GLASSCOMING-ATTRACTION SLIDE FOR THE 1942 MOVIE, BASED ON CHANDLER'S ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY, STARRING ALAN LADD, VERONICA LAKE, AND WILLIAM BENDIX.

[N.P., N.D.]. 1942 - This Paramount film was Chandler's only solo screen-writing credit for which he received an Oscar nomination and in James Agee's judgement that it was, "barring occasional victories and noble accidents, about as good a movie as can be expected from the big factories." The 3" x 2-1/4" glass slide shows black & white close-ups of all three stars, plus action vignettes. It is hand-tinted in blue, yellow, and pink, with no writing in the space provided to crayon in the dates of its local showing. By 1946, few theater operators were still using slide projectors, as they had since the silent movie era, to announce coming attractions, and this was one of the last slides Paramount would manufacture for that purpose. It was produced in only a very small fraction of the numbers of posters and lobby cards that were printed, and because of its fragile nature, few examples have survived. This slide has a peripheral crack on one side but it does not affect the image, else in very good condition and apparently unused, in a 4"x 3-1/2" cardboard mount, stamped on one border with the title, and with die-cut cardboard inserts to protect the fragile glass from breakage. This is the only the second example we've seen for this title and none has been offered at auction, to our knowledge, for the past several years, during which time a number of one-sheet posters of The Blue Dahlia have sold in the $3000 to $5000 price range.

        Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy

New York: Harper & Brothers,, [1942]. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. Embossed ownership stamp of Rev. Emora T. Brannan and ownership inscription dated 1943 to front free endpaper. Gilt to spine a little faded. A very good copy. First edition, scarce. Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy was Schumpeter's most important and controversial book, a philosophical analysis of economics and history in which he coined the term "creative destruction". Blaug, who calls this his masterpiece, notes that in this work, Schumpeter "paradoxically rejected the Marxian diagnosis of the imminent breakdown of capitalism and, at the same time, predicted the almost inevitable arrival of socialism as a result of the betrayal of capitalist values by the intellectuals of the western world" (Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 216.)

Ballistik *With German Swastika Ink Stamp Atop Front Board*

Berlin, Germany: Walter De Gruyter & Co.. Hardcover. 267 pages. Index. Text in German. An advanced treatise on ballistics from the second world war era. This copy highly noteworthy for its apparent provenance from the wartime library of a technical institute in Stuttgart as evinced by identical black inkstamps in the upper right corner of the front board, front free endpaper and title pages respectively. This circular stamp depicts an eagle, wings spread, atop a swastika. Around the stamp is lettering which appears to be the name of a technical institute in Stuttgart. A four-digit handwritten book number appears atop each stamp and at foot of backstrip. The swastika portion of the stamp on front endpaper and title page has been neatly covered over in black marker. No other markings. Light external wear to beige boards. Crease to lower corner of front free endpaper and first several pages. Binding sound. It is left to our imaginations to wonder how many German trainers and students learned from this book, and the impact they had on hostilities with the Allies. Author was a prominent mathematician and member of the Nazi party. A quality copy of this important historical item. . Good. 1942. Zweite Auflage (Second Edition).

        NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH.

[New York]: Howell, Soskin, Publishers, [1942]. - First U. S. edition. Author's first book. Near fine, tight copy in dust jacket, professionally restored at spine ends and corners with two small closed tears at bottom edge of rear panel. Tough and important hardboiled mystery about the kidnapping of an heiress by a mob of ruthless gangsters. Dave Fenner, an ex-reporter turned private eye, is the hero of this tale. It was made into a film in 1948 with an all-British cast except for American actor Jack La Rue, who starred as Slim Grissom, the leader of the Grissom Gang. In 1971, Robert Aldrich filmed the story using the title THE GRISSOM GANG, that starred Kim Darby as Barbara Blandish, Robert Lansing as Dave Fenner, with Scott Wilson, Tony Musante, Connie Stevens, Ralph Waite, and others in supporting roles. The book provides a tough, hardboiled story and THE GRISSOM GANG is carefully constructed, exciting, full of suspense, with much attention to the story detail. An exceptional copy.         The Managerial Revolution or What is Happening in the World Now

Putnam, London,, 1942. Octavo. Original oatmeal cloth, spine and front cover lettered in red. With the grey paper dust jacket printed in red. A few light pencil marginal notes. A small spray of ?rust-spots to rear cover and a single blemish on front cover, else a fine copy in the very good jacket just a little tanned at the spine. First English edition, first impression. Burnham's book caused some consternation when first published in England as, originally writing in 1940, Burnham took a German victory more or less for granted. George Orwell reviewed the book critically at length in an essay originally printed in Polemic under the title "Second Thoughts on James Burnham", later reprinted as a pamphlet as James Burnham and the Managerial Revolution 1946. But Burnham's general forecast, that capitalism would be replaced not by socialism but by the rule of managerial administrators, still seems prescient.

        THE MOON IS DOWN

New York: Viking Press, 1942. First edition, second state. Hardcover. A very good copy in blue cloth with light spine sunning, in a nearly fine dust jacket. This special copy is signed by the author on the front end paper in blue felt tip pen and with the 'Steinbeck Family' bookplate to the front pastedown. In this masterful tale set in Norway during World War II, Steinbeck explores the effects of invasion on both the conquered and the conquerors. As he delves into the emotions of the German commander and the Norwegian traitor, and depicts the spirited patriotism of the Norwegian underground, Steinbeck uncovers profound, often unsettling truths about war—and about human nature.

Helen Keller Writes A Sympathy Letter: ?I Am Exceedingly With You In A Loneliness And A Struggle Towards The Light Which I Too Have Experienced?

TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼? x 10 ½?. February 2, 1942. Westport, Connecticut. A typed letter signed ?Helen Keller? in purple pencil. She wrote to her friend Villa about the recent death of her husband Thurston: ?After some days absence from home I find your nephew?s letter on my desk. I cannot tell you how distressed and hurt I am over all that has happened to you. It seems like a dreadful dream, I cannot realize it yet with the vivid, happy mental picture I have always had of you and Thurston together. I can only grieve with you in that accumulates suffering and pray for your renewed strength. My lonely heart understands yours, and I know how you will feel in a home bereft of your beloved?s actual presence. But you have ever met fate with an unconquerable spirit, and as the darkness lifts from your inner sight, faith and memory will bring Thurston back to you, yes, even closer than was possible on earth. According to your brave philosophy he has gone on to encounter more wonderful adventures, to acquire greater knowledge and do higher good unto his fellow-creatures. But why should I write thus when words bring no comfort at such a time? Only to let you know that I am exceedingly with you in a loneliness and a struggle towards the Light which I too have experienced. Perhaps you will sometime glance at the booklet, ?We Bereaved? which I am going to send you. If it gives you even one soothing thought, I shall be thankful. Polly [Thomson] was as shocked as I was when Mr. Curren?s letter came, and she joins me in tenderest sympathy.? When Keller is common in letters, she is scarcer in letters with personal content. There is some red staining to the bottom margin, leaving the letter in very good condition.

        GOLD RUSH

1942. Fine. [MOVIE POSTER, lithograph]. THE GOLD RUSH (United Artists, R-1942). "The Gold Rush" is considered by many to be Chaplin's greatest masterpiece. This is a poster for the 1942 re-release of the 1925 film, for which Chaplin composed and recorded a musical score and added a narration which he recorded himself. British Door Panel (20" X 60"). This color poster shows the "Little Tramp," wrapped in a shawl and shivering in the snow, before a large wooden sign that reads: "THE WORLD'S GREAT | LAUGHING PICTURE! | CHARLIE | CHAPLIN | in | THE | GOLD RUSH | Written and directed by | Charles Chaplin | with MUSIC | and WORDS." In the bottom left corner is a small seal: "Distributed by UNITED ARTISTS," and in the bottom right corner is another small seal, that of the British Board of Film Censors. Printed in very small type in the bottom border, beneath the image, is "Printed in England," a two-line terms-of-use statement, "STAFFORD & CO., LTD., Netherfield, Nottingham : and London," " No 6128A." There is a 2" tear at top, a 1.5 inch tear at the bottom, and a few nicks along the borders. Overall fine.

Let's Be Offensive: A Revue With Political Punch

Unity Theatre (1942), London - London's Unity Theatre was organized in 1936; decidedly left-wing in outlook, it had ties to the Communist Party of Great Britain and to Victor Gollancz's Left Book Club Theatre Guild. The Theatre's annual satirical revues, which pioneered the use of such agitprop techniques as dramatic documentary (akin to the "Living Newspapers" of the Federal Theatre in the U.S.), improvisation, and audience participation, marked an important phase in the evolution of dramatic performance art in Great Britain. A really lovely early work by S. John Woods, noted for his film and travel posters (including several for London Transport) in the 1950s. Not found in the Unity Theatre archives at Southern Illinois University. Original lithographed poster, 54cm x 41cm (21" x 16"). Professionally matted and framed (not laid down) beneath UV-protective glass. Fine, unfaded example; Grade A.
