[STUNNING PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER'S EXPERIENCES IN GUADALCANAL DURING WORLD WAR II]

[Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. ca. late 1942].. Sixty-two candid photographs, most 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Contemporary leatherette covers, string-tied to black album pages. Some edge wear to album. A few photos edgeworn, but overall the photos are in very nice condition. An astonishing, at times gut-wrenching, collection of vernacular photographs featuring the experiences of American military personnel in the wake of the Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II. The Guadalcanal Campaign, or the Battle of Guadalcanal, was an extended military campaign comprising several battles fought between August 1942 and February 1943. It was the first major offensive by Allied forces against Japan, and resulted in a valuable strategic victory for the Allies in the Pacific Theater. There are numerous photos of wounded subjects in this album, with eight grisly photos showing dead human casualties in various horrific conditions, likely all of the enemy, and including not one, but two photos featuring American soldiers posed with severed heads. In one, an African-American soldier smiles calmly while holding the maimed and severed head of a Japanese combatant. There are several action shots of the American soldiers in battle, with two photographs showing explosions, one shot of troops storming a beach, and one presumably showing a sinking submarine. The album also includes photos of downed aircraft and other after- effects of recent battle, including at least one shot of a destroyed Japanese transport ship, the Kinugawa Maru, which was attacked and sunk by American Marines just offshore of Guadalcanal on Nov. 15, 1942. In addition, there are several shots of native islanders, scenes of the American troops at mealtime and at prayer, troops on the march, and more. Two photographs contain images of morale-boosting signs posted on Guadalcanal and intended to encourage the American troops. One reads "KILL THE BASTARDS! Down this road marched one of the regiments of the United States Army...Twenty of their wounded in litters were bayoneted, shot and clubbed by the yellow bellies. KILL THE BASTARDS!" Another sign features a quote by Admiral Halsey, reading, "Admiral Halsey says 'Kill japs, kill japs, kill more japs!' You will help kill the yellow bastards if...YOU DO YOUR JOB WELL." The album concludes with several shots of the soldier who compiled this album at home, presumably take after his return from the war. In one photo of three soldiers, the compiler identifies each subject, writing in pen "ME," "RICHY," and "WEB." He also poses with other soldiers, family members, and friends, likely never realizing the historical value in the stunning photographic record he left behind documenting his time, and the stark realities of war, in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

[Op. 42]. Autograph musical quotation signed in full

1 page, 123 x 62 mm., cut from a larger sheet of music manuscript paper. Dated July 11, 1942. The first four measures of Schoenberg's Piano Concerto, op. 42, right hand of piano part. Notated in ink. Inscribed and signed: "Autograph to Mr Kenneth Griffith by Arnold Schoenberg." . An early, thus far unrecorded, musical autograph of the work. Schoenberg began writing the short score just the day before. The present autograph matches the final version. We have been unable to locate any biographical information on Kenneth Griffith. "Schönberg's Piano Concerto, op. 42, which was originally commissioned by his former student Oscar Levant, is conceived as a single-movement form displaying the characteristics of a multimovement sonata cycle. Like the program of the concerto it divides into four parts. The opening melody of the Concerto, lasting thirty-nine bars, presents the four modes of the tone row in the following order: basic set, inversion of retrograde, retrograde, and inversion... The manuscript includes the four parts of the programme (which - according to Schönberg scholarship - is clearly autobiographical), each accompanied by a musical example from one of the four sections of the concerto. The first statement of the programme [is] 'Life was so easy.' " Website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna.

        The Masculine Dead Poems, 1938-1940

Prairie City, IL: Press of James A. Decker. Very Good. 1942. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable toning as does the title page. This copy has been signed by William Everson as William Everson (dated 1944) with an inscription, and signed again in 1962 as Brother Antoninus. This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life, Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry.Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board, in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943, he was sent to a Civilian Public Service (CPS) work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon.[1] In Camp Angel at Waldport, Oregon, with other poets, artists and actors such as Kemper Nomland, William Eshelman, Kermit Sheets, Glen Coffield, George Woodcock and Kenneth Patchen, he founded a fine-arts program in which the CPS men staged plays and poetry-readings and learned the craft of fine printing." ; Signed by Author .

        Art of Walt Disney, The

1942. first edition. It's A Small World…"Inscribed by Walt Disney to Bobby Hammack[DISNEY, Walt]. FIELD, Robert D. The Art of Walt Disney. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1942. First edition. Inscribed by Walt Disney on the half-title "To Mr. Hammack / With Best / Wishes / Walt Disney". Large quarto (11 1/16 x 8 3/16 inches; 280 x 206 mm.). xviii, 290 pp. Monotone frontispiece portrait of Walt Disney, eleven color plates and forty-eight monotone plates within the text. Publisher's fawn linen over boards, front cover and spine decoratively titled in red and black. All edges stained yellow. Original cream dust jacket printed in red and black. Minimal repair to lower two inches of front inner hinge, light abrasion to top right hand corner of front free-endpaper, otherwise A near fine copy with the pictorial bookplate of Edwin S. Hammack on front paste-down. The 1964 New York World's Fair is remembered as the venue that Walt Disney used to design and perfect his system of "Audio-Animatronics", in which a combination of electromechanical actuators and computers controls the movement of lifelike robots to act out scenes. WED Enterprises designed and created "Pepsi Presents Walt Disney's 'It's a Small World' - a Salute to UNICEF and the World's Children at the Pepsi pavilion, animated dolls and animals frolicked in a spirit of international unity accompanying a boat ride round the world. The song 'It's a Small World' was written by the Sherman Brothers. Each of the animated dolls had an identical face, originally designed by New York (Valley Stream) artist Gregory S. Marinello in partnership with Walt Disney himself.Bobby Hammack (1922-1990) was an American musician, originally from Texas, whose principal instrument was jazz piano. He led a prolific career in Los Angeles as a pianist, organist, conductor, arranger and composer in radio, television and film. "Because he had to repeat the title song for the duration of the ride, [conductor and arranger Bobby] Hammack worked hard to find ways harmonically and orchestrally to distinctly identify a country or region. Some countries were easy. Scotland for example, could be instantly identified by the drone of the bagpipe. Japan, by the use of pentatonic scales. Other musical distinctions, such as Spain from Mexico, or India from Bali, required more thought - particularly if they were to be perceived by the mostly untrained ears of fairgoers. Although the original idea had been to include music from each nation represented in the ride, Bobby Hammack managed to avoid interpolation of national tunes in the ride proper, with one exception. The Ireland section of "It's A Small World" makes use of the Renaissance dance tune "Dargason," more familiarly known as "The Irish Washerwoman." The arrangement for each country lasted 48 seconds. They included one statement of the verse and one statement of the chorus of "It's A Small World" as well as an additional 16 bars which repeated either the verse or the chorus, or overlapped verse and chorus, or mixed elements of both verse and chorus. By purposefully obfuscating the last third, or 16 seconds, of each regional arrangement, Bobby Hammack added unpredictability and coruscation to the overlapping elements of "It's A Small World.

        Autograph letter signed.

Pacific Palisades, California, undated [1942].. 4to. 2 pp.. In German, to Mr. Motschan, on imprinted stationery of the Library of Congress, Consultant in Germanic Literature: "It has been a long time since I received your kind letter of June in which you remembered my birthday with so much affection. But I did receive it and cannot understand why the earlier letter got lost It cannot be the old address which caused it, for I receive many letters that get delivered to Princeton first... It has been a long time since we have lived in Princeton. Actually, my time as a visiting professor there had already run out after one year but was extended for another year as an exception. But every year we are here on the West Coast, and we like it so much that after renting for quite a while we built our own home here in the country, in a beautiful area near Westwood and Santa Monica, and not far from either Hollywood or Los Angeles. It is the fourth house in my life - and I think it will be my final residence. For what it will be like in Europe after this mess - if I live long enough to see it - God knows. Which does not mean that I say Hitler will be able to win this war. I was very happy to hear so much good news from you and I congratulate you on your studies. I can understand that St[efan] Zweig s death affected you so deeply. I cannot approve of his decision - hiding, by the way, an incurable illness of his wife is supposed to have contributed to it - because of the discouraging effect it may have on his companions in misfortune. And yet at the same time he was so much better off than most of them. He was much too soft a person, absolutely peace loving and his attitude was completely in favor of intellectual free trade and he is said to have made a gloomy impression since quite some time ago. R.I.P But he should not have permitted the Nazis this triumph. If he had hated and despised them more, he would not have done it Received my best wishes and let us hope that Switzerland will get through this turmoil safe and sound again!" - Thomas Mann had supported the first World War, which led to a break with his pacifist brother, novelist Heinrich Mann. Thomas had lived mostly in Munich until 1933, when he moved to neutral Switzerland. In 1936, he emphatically disassociated himself from Nazism with an open letter. Then in 1938, Mann came to Princeton as a visiting Professor, and settled in California in 1941. At the time of this letter, Mann was finishing his tetrology, Joseph and His Brothers, and began work on Doctor Faustus. Stefan Zweig, a man of Jewish descent, had developed pacifist views with the advent of World War I, when he moved to Switzerland from his native Vienna so that he could express those views. Between the wars he lived in Salzburg, then emigrated to Brazil in 1938. The horrors of World War II were too much for him to bear, causing him to commit suicide in 1942.

The finest collection of the poet?s works in private hands ? and, in our opinion, the richest. The collection contains an astonishing number of important association copies, including Merrill?s first five books inscribed to Kimon Friar, the Greek poet who was Merrill?s teacher at Amherst and his first lover, as well as four dedication copies

Although it lacks a few bibliographical rarities and some common posthumous publications, for quality, condition and depth it is unrivalled. The collection includes seven presentation copies to Kimon Friar ?" including Merrill?s rare first book, Jim?s Book (1942), and the dedication copy of his second and rarest book, The Black Swan, which Friar published for Merrill in Athens in 1946. The collection includes ten presentation copies to Harry Ford, Merrill?s devoted editor and publisher at Atheneum ?" including the dedication copy of From the First Nine. The collection also includes the dedication copies of The Thousand and Second Night, which is inscribed to Irma Brandeis, whom Merrill met the year he taught at Bard College, and Peter, which was written explicitly for, and which is inscribed to, Peter Tourville. The collection includes many books inscribed to a number of Merrill?s lovers, including one to David Jackson, three to Robert Isaacson, and six to David McIntosh ?" whose voluminous correspondence with Merrill is at Washington University, and whose significance may be revealed when Merrill?s correspondence is published. The collection also includes two manuscripts inscribed to Peter Hooten, one of which represents a major portion of Volcanic Holiday, which was dedicated to Hooten. In addition, the collection includes seven presentation copies to Laurence Scott, Merrill?s close friend and occasional publisher, as well as other books inscribed to a number of Merrill?s small press publishers, including Ted Danforth, Jordan Davies, and Eugene O?Neil ?" in each case, the publisher?s copy of the book they published by Merrill. The collection also includes books inscribed to Merrill?s mother, J. D. McClatchy and Stephen Yenser, Merrill?s co-executors, the poets Alfred Corn, William Meredith, W. S. Merwin, and Francis Golffing, as well as one book inscribed to Mary McCarthy and her husband, the diplomat, James West.         Porcelain insulation piece and barbed wire bracket from the electric fence system encircling Stalag Luft III â?? â??The Great Escapeâ? POW camp

[Sagan, Poland], 1942 - 1945. 2.5" D / 21" L. "From the electric fence system encircling Stalag Luft III:(1) Enamel porcelain insulation piece, 2.5â? diameter, enamel chipped. Underside damaged. Good condition.(2) Curved metal barbed wire bracket, 21â? x 0.75â?. Fine patina. Good condition.Stalag Luft III POW camp was situated in Sagan, 100 miles southeast of Berlin, now called Zagan, in Upper Silesia, Poland. All the prisoners of war were flying officers of the British Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm and American U.S. Army Air Force. The first camp compound opened in March 1942, followed by other compounds in 1943 and 1944. It held about 10,000 officers. Stalag Luft III was immortalized in the 1963 motion picture, â??The Great Escape,â? starring Steve McQueen. On the night of March 24-25, 1944, 76 of the 600 prisoners involved in the plan escaped through tunnels they had dug before German guards spotted them. The escape from the camp was the single greatest freedom attempt by POWs in World War II. Of the 76 who tried to escape, 50 were recaptured and executed by the Gestapo on Hitlerâ??s orders, three successfully escaped, and the rest were returned to Stalag Luft III.Closed at the end of January 1945 as the Russians advanced through Poland, the camp was bulldozed completely by the middle of 1946. Polish souvenir hunters began unearthing pieces for the British market from the mid 1950s. These pieces were purchased from a British source in the 1970s and sold to University Archives by the British auction house, Bonhams."

        Nidden aufziehendes Wetter. Aquarell.

1942.. Signiert "EHartmann", datiert "Fr 18.9.42" und betitelt "Nidden aufziehendes Wetter". Auf Bütten. 48,3 x 71,8 cm.. Obere Ecke minimale Knickspuren.

[World War II Poster:] WE FRENCH WORKERS WARN YOU DEFEAT MEANS SLAVERY, STARVATION, DEATH [caption title]

Washington, DC: GPO / Office of War Information, 1942.. Oblong folio broadside (28.5 x 40"; 72 x 102 cm). Printed by offset lithography in colors, with OWI/GPO imprint and date in extreme lower margin. Professionally linen mounted, retaining full margins, with no signs of restoration in the process. A bright, fine example. A superb poster attacking the suppression of workers' freedom under the Vichy government as symptomatic of the far greater possibilities of brutality. The image depicts a group of French workers, from shoulders up with hands raised above their heads, against the background of a brick wall on which is posted a scarlet broadside printing in pseudo-Gothic lettering an "Official Vichy Decree" ordering the compulsory service of all men between 18 and 50 in matters "necessary in the superior interest of the state." This is one of the two posters produced from artwork by Shahn during his tenure with the OWI from the Autumn of 1942 until the Summer of the following year. Although he produced a number of images for the agency, the others were dismissed as too violent, or as not sufficiently appropriate to the topic of the home front and were not used. Shortly thereafter, he began his work with the CIO-PAC. war litgraph
