[Vintage World War II Poster:] THIS IS NAZI BRUTALITY

Washington, DC: GPO / Office of War Information, 1942.. Folio broadside (38 x 28"; 97 x 72 cm scant). Printed by offset lithography in colors, with OWI/GPO imprint and date in extreme lower margin. Professionally linen mounted, lower margin with imprint retained, top and side margins trimmed. With signs of minor color fill at apexes of top folds, but otherwise a very good to fine, bright example. Rolled. An exceptionally powerful image, prepared by Shahn in response to the massacre at Lidice, depicting a shackled and hooded man against a brick wall, with the dated newswire report of the Lidice massacre superimposed over the figure, and the brilliant red caption: "This is Nazi Brutality." Shahn worked for the OWI from the Autumn of 1942 until the Summer of the following year, and although he produced a number of images for the agency, only two were actually utilized -- the others were dismissed as too violent, or as not sufficiently appropriate to the topic of the home front. Shortly thereafter, he began his work with the CIO-PAC.

Carlu's masterpiece and the greatest American poster produced during WWII. Designed and issued in 1941, six months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Government re-issued this poster on a larger scale a year later when the war machine was heavily reliant on the mighty output from American factories. It won a New York Art Directors medal as well as being voted poster of the year. Aside from the date, the only difference between the 1941 printing and the 1942 printing appears to be that the latter was always folded for distribution

The Speeches of Adolf Hitler April 1922–August 1939

London: Oxford University Press,, 1942. An English Translation of Representative Passages arranged under Subjects and Edited by Norman H. Baynes. 2 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spines gilt, top edge dark blue. With the dust jackets. Volume II with mild mottling to front board and very light dampstains to the top of rear board and top margin of pp.1943-80, rear board slightly bowed. An excellent set in bright, price-clipped jackets with a couple of short closed tears to rear panel of Volume II. First edition, first impression. Professor Baynes was a recently retired professor of Byzantine studies at University College who spent the war years working in the foreign research and press service: "From 1939 to 1945 he used his historical training in the field of modern German history and produced two large, fully annotated volumes of Hitler's pre-war speeches (1942). The depth of his involvement in the national struggle was demonstrated by his choice of subject for his Romanes lecture in Oxford in June 1942: 'Intellectual liberty and totalitarian claims'; its delivery was said to have been a brilliant caricature of the oratory of the Führer on whose speeches he had been working" (ODNB). Distinctly uncommon, particularly in jackets.

Ballistik *With German Swastika Ink Stamp Atop Front Board*

Walter De Gruyter & Co., Berlin, Germany, 1942, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Zweite Auflage (Second Edition)Size: 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall, 267 pages. Index. Text in German. An advanced treatise on ballistics from the second world war era. This copy highly noteworthy for its apparent provenance from the wartime library of a technical institute in Stuttgart as evinced by identical black inkstamps in the upper right corner of the front board, front free endpaper and title pages respectively. This circular stamp depicts an eagle, wings spread, atop a swastika. Around the stamp is lettering which appears to be the name of a technical institute in Stuttgart. A four-digit handwritten book number appears atop each stamp and at foot of backstrip. The swastika portion of the stamp on front endpaper and title page has been neatly covered over in black marker. No other markings. Light external wear to beige boards. Crease to lower corner of front free endpaper and first several pages. Binding sound. It is left to our imaginations to wonder how many German trainers and students learned from this book, and the impact they had on hostilities with the Allies. Author was a prominent mathematician and member of the Nazi party. A quality copy of this important historical item, Former Library Copy

New York: Howell Soskin, 1942. First American Edition. Basis for two films: the first a notoriously violent (but faithful) British adaptation in 1948 starring Linden Travers and Jack La Rue; the second version, "The Grissom Gang," was made in 1971, directed by Robert Aldrich and starring Kim Darby, Scott Wilson and Tony Musante. Chase's second book and first hardcover, a high spot of hard-boiled crime fiction. Near Fine in a strong Very Good plus dust jacket. Jacket is quite bright and colorful, with none of the usual fading to the red portion of the spine, only a couple of nicks and rubbing to extremities.

        Sound Military Decision

Newport, R.I.: U.S. Naval War College 1942 - xliii, 243 p. ; 22 cm. Restricted, Copy No. 794. March 1942 printing by Edward C. Kalbfus. Green boards. Spiral bound. Good binding and cover. Clean, unmarked pages with minimal tanning. Red pencil under Restricted on front wrap. A rare original copy of the famous Naval Green Book. Admiral Edward Clifford Kalbfus (November 24, 1877 ? September 6, 1954), nicknamed "Old Dutch",[1] was a four-star admiral in the United States Navy who was commander of the Battle Force of the United States Fleet from 1938 to 1939 and President of the Naval War College from 1934 to 1936 and 1939 to 1942. Kalbfus was dissatisfied with the existing guide to naval planning, perceiving a widespread indifference towards the fundamentals of naval warfare; according to Kalbfus, "At the time. it was not generally accepted by the Navy that their business was to fight although, of course, if confronted with this question, they would have agreed that that is what they were hired for. But, within the range of my own observation, both ashore and afloat, I saw that the keeping of office hours and the performance of sundry routine tasks were more in order than an intensive study of the Navy's real business." He decided to replace it by writing a book-length treatment of the precepts of logical thinking that could be applied to every military situation. In Kalbfus' formulation, naval planning should be guided by "the fundamental principle for the attainment of an end," a three-part formula that evaluated the suitability, feasibility, and acceptability of a plan by asking whether the proposed course of action would accomplish the mission, whether the mission could be accomplished using the available resources, and whether the cost would be worth the price. The first draft was circulated among the staff and students for review. Many staff members were dissatisfied with the new text, including Captain Raymond A. Spruance, who objected to Kalbfus' rejection of existing doctrine and to his cumbersome writing style. After assimilating all of the comments, Kalbfus submitted the book for publication under the title Sound Military Decision. before departing the college on December 15, 1936 to assume a fleet command. However, his immediate successor, Rear Admiral Charles P. Snyder, spent a year reviewing the manuscript, then rewrote several chapters for clarity and published this revised edition in May 1938. Outraged at Snyder's tampering, Kalbfus requested a return to the Naval War College in order to finish the book himself, finally publishing his version of Sound Military Decision in March 1942. In 1944, Admiral Ernest J. King enshrined its methodology in naval regulations as COMINCH P-1: "Naval Directives and the Order Form," although it fell from favor after the war. In 1984, the official historians of the Naval War College would write, "Many believe it was and still is the most valuable contribution to military thought made at the Naval War College in the past century.Kalbfus' Sound Military Decision was the most important expression of the college's philosophy, embodying both the focus and understanding expressed in college classrooms throughout the interwar period."
