2 Bände. Luftgeographisches Einzelheft. Ägypten und Cyrenaika. Herausgegeben vom Generalstab der Luftwaffe. 1. und 2. Teil

[His WWII Chronicles and the basis of 'The Cruel Sea' complete]. Comprising 'HM Corvette' [with] 'East Coast Corvette' [with] 'Corvette Command' [with] 'HM Frigate'. COMPLETE WWII ['CRUEL SEA'] CHRONICLES IN FULL MOROCCO

Cassell,, [1942-46]. 4 vols., in 1, 8vo., First Editions, with frontispieces and plates; newly and handsomely bound in full navy blue crushed morocco, sides with double frame border in gilt, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and tooled in gilt with an anchor device, all original pictorial wrappers (a little dust-soiled) preserved, a splendid copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The definitive record of corvette service in WWII, the set comprises 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943), 'Corvette Command' (1944) and 'HM Frigate' (1946). The first three volumes were combined and issued in slightly abridged form as 'Three Corvettes' (1945). Taken together and in sequence the four volumes provide a near-continuous record of Monsarrat's own wartime service. Furthermore they contain much of the inspiration and context, and in several cases actual incidents which reappear in the author's masterpiece 'The Cruel Sea' (1951), arguably the finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII. Monsarrat's seatime began in HMS Campanula [broadly the 'HMS Flower' of the first volume] on the North Atlantic convoys; at one time she was the only RN vessel operating out of St. Johns. She is perhaps best known for her service in convoy OG71 (Milford Haven-Gibraltar, August 1941) which suffered so badly at the hands of a U-boat pack that it was ordered to seek shelter in neutral Lisbon. Many of the merchantmen were lost (including the SS Aquila with 22 Wrens aboard) together with the escorts HMS Bath and HMS Zinnia. The full story is related by Lund and Ludlam in 'Nightmare Convoy' (1987). He then transferred to HMS Guillemot ['HMS Dipper' in the second volume] serving on the East Coast convoys. Among the actions portrayed are the torpedoing of HMS Vortigern by E-boat S-104, and the successful destruction of an HE-111 in August 1941. HMS Guillemot's captain, Lombard-Hobson' has said of Monsarrat 'he was reserved and unpopular, but I liked him myself'. Monsarrat then assumed command of HMS Shearwater ['HMS Winger' in the third volume] operating in the North Sea out of Harwich. Individual volumes are becoming increasingly elusive. Complete sets are seldom offered for sale, especially in this condition. Enser, p.120 (HM Corvette); Law 1008 (East Coast Corvette), 1007 (Corvette Command) and 1084 (HM Frigate). Astonishingly 'HM Corvette' is not recorded by Law.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

London: The Childrens Book Club, 1942. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good/Facsimile Only. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Bound in yellow, gilt-stamped cloth over boards, with a dust-jacket (which Tolkien thought hideous) in orange and white, featuring a cartoon of a dandified hobbit smoking a pipe.         The Great Hunger.

Limited edition; 8vo; original linen-backed blue paper boards and glassine dust jacket, upper cover lettered in black, paper label on spine. Edition of 250, this is number 17. One of the great achievements of twentieth-century Irish literature. Clair Wills in her study of Ireland during the Second World War, states that the poem'excoriates the spiritual, sexual and emotional poverty of rural Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. Kavanagh began the poem in 1941, while the Russian front was the main focus of the war. Wills believes that Kavanagh was drawing an analogy between the struggle of the Irish peasant and that of the Russian. Fine, with two spots to the edge of the text block in a good only jacket with loss to back panel. A nice copy of a scarce book.

The Cruel Sea [with] 'WWII Chronicles'. The Chronicles comprising 'HM Corvette' [with] 'East Coast Corvette' [with] 'Corvette Command' [with] 'HM Frigate'. 'THE CRUEL SEA' AND ITS FORMATIVE CHRONICLES COMPLETE

Cassell,, [1942-46, 1951]. 5 works in 2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with frontispieces and plates; newly and handsomely bound in full navy blue crushed morocco, sides with double frame borders in gilt, backs gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and tooled in gilt with an anchor device, all original pictorial wrappers (a little dust-soiled) preserved, a splendid set ideal as a gift or for presentation. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences [see 'Chronicles' below] , forms the basis of Charles Frend's notable feature film starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography 'The Royal Navy in World War Two'. Law, 1865. Monsarrat's 'WWII Chronicles', arguably the definitive record of corvette service in WWII, are the basis of the novel. The set comprises 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943), 'Corvette Command' (1944) and 'HM Frigate' (1946). »

The Dark Kingdom [1942 limited edition of 75]

Harriss & Givens, New York 1942 - Extremely rare edition of Patchen¿s book of poetry featuring an original and unique ink and watercolor cover by the author. This one features the bearded Egir (Aegir), variously described as a giant or a Norse god of the sea who loved to give parties for the other gods. Text block in near fine condition: clean with no marks, tears, or dog ears. Photograph of Patchen (taken by Robin Carson) pasted onto third page. The front cover is stained and discolored in several places, but the watercolor of Egir is not affected. Likewise, the back cover is sun-tanned, discolored, and stained (just one place) ¿ see images of this book to your left. The spine likewise has some discoloring. The slipcase is in generally very good condition: a small section of the upper portion is intact but torn away from the side. There is some shelf rubbing and chipping, particularly along the edges, but the text is still very clear on both front and back of the slipcase. From The Beat Page on the Internet : Kenneth Patchen was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1911. From the age of twelve, he kept a diary and read Dante, Homer, Burns, Shakespeare, and Melville. He attended Alexander Meiklejohn's Experimental College for one year and then the University of Wisconsin. He was employed in a variety of jobs as a migrant worker in the United States and Canada. "Permanence," a sonnet, was published in The New York Times on April 10, 1932. He wrote more than forty books of poetry, prose and drama, including Before the Brave (1936), First Will and Testament (1939) and Journal of Albion Moonlight (1941), a prose work. In 1942, he published The Dark Kingdom in a limited edition of seventy-five copies and painted each cover individually in water color. For more than thirty years, Patchen lived with a severe spinal ailment that caused him almost constant physical pain. The weight of this personal battle was compounded by his sensitivity to greater issues of humanity, and his poetry paid special attention to the horrors of war. With his work he tried to create a kind of sanctuary for the reader, apart from reality, where larger-than-life characters were motivated by their loving and benevolent natures. Kenneth Patchen died in 1972. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Australia. Her Natural and Industrial Resources.

1942 - London: Printed by Alf Cooke Ltd, 1942. Colour lithographic map. Sheet 500 x 645mm. Folded as issued. A propaganda map of Australia, showing how the industry and agriculture of the continent was helping the war effort. Little vignettes mark the cattle, sheep, grain and wood regions, and icons note the various types of mining, with a key on the left. The map is decorated with Australia's coat of arms and a large compass rose. A text box reads: 'In War and Peace. Australia's industrial resources have been completely reorganised to meet war-time demands. Her factories are now turning out armaments of many types and aircraft, including fighters and bombers. Her shipbuilding programme includes destroyers, minesweepers and merchant vessels. In addition, Australia is contributing to a great wheat pool which will help to feed the starving peoples of Europe when the war is over' . Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884-1947), younger brother of Eric Gill, specialised in graphic design in the Arts and Crafts style. His most important commission was from the Imperial War Graves Commission, designing the script used on Commission headstones and war memorials, including the 'Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme'. He produced a number of maps, two of which appeared in the British Museum exhibition 'Magnificent Maps in 2010: 'The Wonderground Map of London' (1914) & 'Tea Revives the World' (1940). This was one of a series of wartime maps of the Commonwealth countries, including New Zealand and Canada.

        Fragments du Narcisse

1942Tananarive, Sn [Imprimé par Henri Vidalie], 1942. 32 x 24,5 cm, in-4°, 1 f. bl. + 10 ff. n. ch.

In C'est-à-dire.

Bel ensemble.

Compagno di studi di Silvio D'Arzo e di Pier Paolo Pasolini, Serra aveva insegnato italiano in diversi istituti. Ha scritto numerosi saggi su Pasolini. A Luciano Serra, Francesco Leonetti  Roberto Roversi e  P.P. The Fun of The Fair.

Barstow, CA & London: Published by the O.T.O. (printed at the Chiswick Press, London),, 1942. (Nijni Novgorod, 1913 e.v.) Octavo, pp. 24. Original grey wrappers printed in red, stitched as issued. Frontispiece portrait of Crowley. Discreet book label of Morry J. Hart on verso of front wrapper. Light peripheral toning to covers. An excellent copy, complete with the errata slip (tipped to the half-title) and the mimeographed poem at the end (entitled "Landed Gentry"). First and limited edition, number 23 of 200 copies signed flamboyantly by the author below his frontispiece portrait. The Fun of the Fair is Crowley's long but colourful poem describing the famous Nizhni Novgorod Fair, held from the mid-sixteenth century up until 1929, a vital centre for trade that attracted merchants from India, Iran and Central Asia. "Crowley ceremoniously published The Fun of the Fair at 11.31 a.m. on 22 December [1942]. One of its first buyers was Ivan Maiskii, Soviet ambassador. The Fun of the Fair's publication nearly thirty years after composition [in 1913] was apparently an effort to persuade people the new Russian ally was not going to eat them. Or was it published to persuade others Crowley was sympathetic towards Russia? The Fun of the Fair had a sting in its tail. Having failed to get Britain's only communist MP, George Gallagher, to read it in the House, Crowley put his scathing attack on the snobbish hypocrites who obstructed victory at the end of the booklet: 'The Landed Gentry'... Vintage Crowley" (Tobias Churton, Aleister Crowley The Biography: Spritual Revolutionary, Romantic Explorer, Occult Master - and Spy, 2011, p. 399). Apparently about half the edition remained unsigned at the time of Crowley's death in 1947 and only a proportion were issued with the mimeographed poem "Landed Gentry", which, with its anti-establishment slant and in the light of strict wartime censorship laws, was rebuffed by a number of printers. Crowley then hit upon the idea of having a mainstream printer - the Chiswick Press - produce the book, while having a jobbing printer produce "The Landed Gentry". He then had the poem tipped-in to the back cover of some copies. These copies with the extra poem tend to be those that were distributed in Britain during Crowley's lifetime. Crowley may well have had Byron's Don Juan in mind when penning this picaresque epic: "Beyond the block of shops there is a square/ Containing the diversions of the fair./ The usual thing - monkeys, two-headed brats,/ A Lion-tamer, wrestlers, acrobats,/ Nothing of note; but here the sons and daughters/ of misery had set up their headquarters" (stanza 29).

Montreal: The Montreal Standard, 1942. Edition Not Stated. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. Montreal: The Montreal Standard, 1942 Offered is the only known copy of Sheilah Graham's lost 1941 Hollywood novel(la), FILM STRUCK. There are no copies listed on Worldcat or in any online library resource, and I have combed Canadian archives, paper and magazine hoards and dealers in search of another to no avail. Bibliographies list no novels or novellas from Graham between 1935 and 1958 (Beloved Infidel). Nor does Graham mention it in her own published works. Whether this work has been simply lost or (more likely) intentionally repressed is unknown. Neither the Archives at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, nor the Sheilah Graham papers at Princeton include this item. It was copyrighted by Graham on December 12,1941, but never published in book format, and was only published in America as a newspaper serial. This tabloid publication as a complete novel insert in the Montreal Standard is its only known complete state publication format and this is possibly the only surviving copy. Canadians took their wartime paper drives seriously. Published 1942 in Montreal, Canada as a 12 by 16 inch tabloid novel insert. P. 12. Formatted in four columns of small font type per page, (approx. 30,000 words total). Cover and one other illustration credited B. T. Note that the cover graphic contains a microphone and an old-time movie camera as well as the starlet whose features seem to mirror those of Graham in her prime. Condition is clean and complete Near Very Good with light edge wear and light uniform paper tanning noted. No paper loss but some light creasing noted. A light vertical fold is visible on all pages. Sheilah Graham Westbrook (Born Lily Shiel to a Ukrainian Jewish family in London, later wedded to three husbands Graham, Westbrook and Wojtkiewicz ) was the most famous and successful Hollywood columnist through the golden age of screen. Her Hollywood Today was published over 35 years in 180 newspapers. She was also the intimate companion of F. Scott Fitzgerald from summer 1937 to the time of his demise on December 21, 1940 at 1443 North Hayworth Avenue. This item will generate a couple of theses amongst Fitzgerald scholars. Fitzgerald's final heroine in Love Of The Last Tycoon, his unfinished Hollywood novel, is based on Graham. After the trauma of Scott's death in her presence, Graham returned to England, working for North American Newspaper Alliance John Wheeler before returning to Hollywood. Later liaisons with A. J. Ayer and Robert Taylor are said to have produced her two children Wendy and Robert, and created conjecture with some historians as to her possible involvement with the secret services and/or the House Committee on Un-American Activities witchhunts. But maybe it's all gossip. "In a Hollywood where nearly everyone is eaten alive the gossip columnists are the fattest cats in town." Sheilah was known to use her feminine wiles to her advantage with Hollywood moguls, movers and/or personages that struck her fancy (Eddie Mannix, Robert Taylor, Robert Benchley, etc.). Her weekly columns could make or break stars. Her honesty or sources were often suspect. She was a frequent companion to Marilyn Monroe in the early 50s. She retired to Palm Beach and died there in 1988.The theme of Film Struck centres on a would-be-starlet trying to navigate the path to stardom and maintain some integrity. The cover tagline is: "Here is the story of a beautiful girl who suffered agony to win success in filmland and then had to face the choice between love and a career. Did she make the right decision?" It is certainly critical of the studio system and the Hollywood of the day. The novel(la) opens with a gala premiere attended by Cagney, Colbert and all the stars, where the film struck young heroine Livia first meets the handsome young stuntman hunk for Mammoth Studios, Bruce. Successive chapter titles include: Visions of Fame, Screen Test, Artistic Temperament, From Glamour to Glimmer, Unwelcome Publicity, Another Proposal, Woman's Privilege and Rocky Road to Stardom. Sheilah's writing quality seems a bit fluffy-- light romance, not Fitzgerald. The archtype Hollywood characters, scenes and locales are present and accounted for: Ciro's, starlet extras, terminally alcoholic directors and writers, spoiled temperamental leads, dirty money from drugs and Santa Anita, producers with immense power and wandering eyes, The Brown Derby, slimy managers, drugs, gambling, money laundering and blackmail, murdered father figures, yacht weekends with poker to Catalina, ranches in San Fernando Valley, Garden of Allah, daytrips to Santa Barbara. etc. Graham is always attuned to scandalous behavior. Quotations include: "Ambitious girls in Hollywood did not refuse the admiration of an important director - unless they were making a play for an important producer." "If I were directing this scene you'd fling your arms around my neck and you'd say, "Why Daddy, I recognized you right away." or "A memory of Earl Dixon with the band and wanting them to play "Eroica" in memory of a great man made her relent." (the Hollywood historians and Fitzgerald scholars will have a field day with this one - and many others- as "Eroica" was reportedly playing at Scott's death. The Fitz scholars will be checking every word for associations with Love of the Last Tycoon, which was completed after his death by Edmond Wilson, also in 1941, and who was on excellent terms with Graham.)         Photo album of Japanese occupied Manchuria

Manchuria, 1942. Oblong photo album, 6" x 7.25", 23 leaves with color postcards and black and white photos mounted on each, a majority accompanied by manuscript annotations in Japanese; green padded cloth; covers a little worn at corners, else very good. The upper flyleaf indicates that this is the album of a member of the Kwantung Army, meant to record his impressions of Manchuria during his deployment and spanning July 1941 to October 1942. He remarks on women, the Lunar New Year, local production, Northern Manchuria, and so on. At one point he appears to mention that as strong as the Chinese may be, they can't defeat the Japanese sword.
