        Nash Motors Dealer Archive

Associated Sales Co. / Nash Motors Company, Detroit, Michigan 1942 - An archive of photographs and recordings related to New England Nash Motor Car Dealers. The collection includes of two framed black and white photographs, measuring 20" x 10" and 31.5" x 8", of Nash Dealers attending a "service clinic" in 1927 and a convention in 1941 along with a copy of a Nash Dramatized Selling Service kit consisting of a wooden carrying case covered in coarse woven cloth with a leather covered handle and three metal clasps housing 10 filmstrips (or "slidefilms") and seven 33 1/3 RPM records. Overall near fine with the photographs unexamined out of the lightly rubbed frames but both images sharp and unfaded though both with very light creases from once being rolled; the selling kit has a bit of wear to the exterior a touch of oxidation to the metal lids of a few of the filmstrips and two of the smaller records are a bit wavy. The first photograph, taken by "Glines & Slater" and dated January 19-20, 1927, shows a group of Nash Dealers standing outside a Nash Showroom located at 640 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston for a Nash Service Clinic with vehicles in the windows and workers inside looking out. The second photograph, dated August 28, 1940, captures a room full of dealers seated at tables in a large, many wearing paper hats, with a stage and musician to one side and a dais facing the stage on the opposite wall. While not as immediately eye-catching but certainly as interesting, is the Nash Dramatized Selling Service kit no. 3 for 1942. A small mimeograph sheet laid in explains: "This is a copy of a 1942 revision of last spring's Trip Through The Factory slide film entltled, 'Creation in Steel.' Simply throw away your last year's slidefilm print and use this film print with the recording which you now have." Thankfully this kit was saved. The hinged box contains seven 33 1/3 RPM albums - three 12" and four massive 16" - along with 10 filmstrips. The kit was produced by the Associated Sales Co. of Detroit, Michigan but recorded, pressed, and manufactured by RCA Manufacturing Co. of Camden New Jersey. The records instruct salesmen on various approaches to attract potential customers - "A New Kind of Car - Now Newer Than Ever," "The Car for the Times," "The Invisible Rider (Resale Value and Service)," Care Makes the Car," and the aforementioned "Creation in Style (A Trip Through the Nash Factory)." The filmstrips undoubtedly correspond with some the recording though their titles differ and are divided evenly between sales strategies ("Closing the Sale and Overcoming Objections") and mechanical concerns ("Trouble-Shooting The Valve Train").An interesting collection of items from the once thriving Nash Motor Company, now part of the Chrysler Corporation.

Alban Berg's Lulu Suite arranged for two pianos by Celius Dougherty. Autograph musical manuscript score for two pianos. Ca. 1942

Although apparently intended for publication, most probably by Schirmer, we have been unable to locate any reference to a published edition of the work. Dougherty, an American pianist and composer, studied composition and piano with Rubin Goldmark and Josef Lhévinne at Juilliard. "His songs were introduced in New York by Eva Gauthier and Maggie Teyte during the 1930s, and later by Marian Anderson, Gladys Swarthout, Eileen Farrell, and William Warfield, many of whom he had accompanied in recordings and recitals throughout the United States and abroad. He toured North America and Europe as a piano duo with the pianist Vincent Ruzicka, giving world premieres of works by Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Darius Milhaud, and others. His own music is predominantly tonal and adheres to classical forms, but songs from later in his life are frequently folk-like and borrow heavily from the style of English composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams." Nadia Turbide and Jonas Westover in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Unbound. 1f. (recto title with short sketch at head, verso blank), 1f. (recto list of movements, verso blank), 37 pp. Movements marked I Ostinato (pp. 1-17); IV Variations (pp. 18-26); II Grave (pp. 27-31); and III (English Waltz (pp. 32-37). Notated in ink on 12-stave G. Shirmer Imperial Brand music manuscript paper, with title in pencil. Evidence of corrections. With notation in pencil "Contract signed - June 1942" to lower right corner of title and in ink "Copyright 1935 by Universal Edition" in another hand to foot of first page of music. With overpastes and cut and pasted sections. Some minor wear, soiling, and browning; outer bifolia separated at spine and with old plastic tape reinforcement to inner margins of leaves not affecting notation; lower edge of first page of music unevenly torn with no loss to notation. Together with a complete negative on onionskin taken from the present manuscript, presumably to be used for the printed edition. 37ff., printed on one side only.

George Putnam's Sons 1942 - First edition. xiii, 274pp. Black cloth with yellow lettering. Near Fine with slightly bumped corners, small pinhole near upper tip of front board, in about Very Good original unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket with faint stain to front panel, spine toned, worn and chipped at extremities. Scarce. A prescient work of geostrategy. It brought the work of German political geographer General Karl Haushofer to the United States in the midst of World War II, years before the cold war necessitated America's re-examination of geostrategy in earnest. Today much less well-known than geostrategists such as George Kennan and Henry Kissinger, Strausz-Hupe nevertheless managed to make quite a mark on American politics and diplomacy.         Tony Sarg's Treasure Book. Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip VanWinkle

B F Jay, New York 1942 - First in Sarg's series of the Treasure Books. This volume contains shortened versions of Alice In Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip Van Winkle with movables. Movable ship on the cover, Alice has a movable neck; the Queen's invitation is present, the Mad Hatter tips his hat; the black spot and the map are present, the apple barrel has its apples concealing Jim, and there is a net bag with three jewels in it; Rip's fish and fishing line are there also the American flag, and the movable scene in the rear cover. The moon face is present n the Rip Van Winkle tale; this is the only copy we have seen with the moon face present; typically the rubber in the 'face' dried out and shattered early on. This copy shows trace of wear and occasional light creasing of the movable bits, but overall it is a near fine copy, and rare with the moon face present. Montanaro p. 315.         [Photo Album]: Lawrence E Ashbrook, The Kentucky Whittler

[Lexington, Kentucky, 1942. Near Fine. Oblong 64mo. Measuring 3.25" x 2". String-tied green stiff card wraps. 48 small black and white gelatin silver photographs, each measuring approximately 2.75" x 1.75". Mild handling wear and curling, images with small holes at left margins for string binding, overall very near fine.A diminutive photograph album compiled and annotated by folk-artist Lawrence E. Ashbrook (circa 1890-1953), also known as The Kentucky Whittler. Ashbrook worked and operated a roadside museum on his property approximately 14 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky on U.S. Highway 25 and traveled frequently around Kentucky and the Southern United States, selling his wooden sculptures and teaching the art of whittling to children. A likely-1930's advertisting postcard held in the University of Kentucky's John Jacob Niles Photographic Collection shows Ashbrook in front of a traveling display with the text: "The Kentucky Whittler / Will Visit Your School by Appoint- / ment. And Give a Demonstration in / Clay Modelling. L.E. Ashbrook - Lexington, Ky."We suspect this small but detailed album was likely used to promote these or similar demonstrations, or perhaps his museum. The album consists of images of The Whittler's work: figures, architectural models, busts, sculptures, vehicles, etc., with 32 of the photographs identified or otherwise annotated on the versos. Many of Ashbrook's figures and dioramas were known to incorporate mechanical elements as well, including an intricately carved skeleton shown here, titled: "Animated Skeleton / or Reckless Driver."Additionally, a series of 12 well-annotated prints detail his process on a figure of F.D.R. from start to finish, capturing images of Ashbrook selecting wood, rough-cutting it with a hatchet, fine carving, and the like. His work is described in one notation as "[...] at random no place in particular but all over in general." Further noted within this series is mention of its filming for a program called "Unusual Occupations," a long-running series of roughly 10-minute films released by Paramount Pictures between 1938-1949; The Whittler was featured in a 1943 episode. Suriving examples of Ashbrook's work are scarce and aside from the aforementioned image at Kentucky, visual or written records are not apparently held institutionally. A rich photographic archive of a noted folk artist in the American South, assembled and annotated by the artist himself.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1942 - 1942 Original Hardback Wisden

1942. Hi, This lot is an 1942 Original Hardback Wisden, in very good condition. The boards are clean, hardly a mark, the spine gilt has been restored and looks like the front has been touched up too, inside it is very nice other than the inscription to page 3. Hard to find book.
