UNDER THE SEA-WIND. A Naturalist's Picture of Ocean Life

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1941 First Edition of Rachel Carson's first book, an established classic of the genre & the first book in her Sea Trilogy. 8vo. 316 pp. A near fine copy in blue cloth, (discreet previous collector's neat name to the front free endpaper & rear pastedown), gilt titles and decorations in a bright, fresh, rather scarce, pictorial dustwrapper (price intact) showing some light overall use, some creasing to the front panel, a few tiny chips and miniscule closed tears. Stunning illustrations by Howard French. Originally published by Simon & Schuster in late November, 1941, it received very good reviews but sold poorly but this had more to do with the world's focus having shifted to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was not a good time for publishing anything. After Carson's success with The Sea Around Us (1951), Under the Sea Wind was republished by Oxford University Press & became a bestseller & was an alternate Book-of-the-Month Club selection. Considered today as one of the "definitive works of American nature writing," describing the behaviour of fish & seabirds accurately, but in story form, often using the scientific names of species as character names. Carson's stated goal in doing so was "to make the sea and its life as vivid a reality for those who may read the book as it has become for me during the past decade." A very collectible copy.. 1st Edition.

Destroyer (First Edition, inscribed to the producer of "I Wake Up Screaming")

      D. Appleton Century New York: D. Appleton-Century, 1941. First Edition. First Edition. About Fine in a Very Good plus, spine-faded dust jacket. INSCRIBED by Fisher to Hollywood producer Milton Sperling, who produced the first adaptation of Fisher's fiction to the screen, the seminal 1941 noir, I Wake Up Screaming: "For Milton Sperling / In sincere appreciation - and with very best wishes for his success, health and happiness / Steve Fisher / Sept. 15, 1941." The inscription was likely made near the end of the film's production, as Fisher co-authored the screenplay in addition to having written the novel, and the film opened in the US a little more than a month later, on October 31, 1941. Sperling worked in Hollywood between 1936 and 1971, and also produced such notable films as Pursued (1947), The Enforcer (1951), and The Battle of the Bulge (1965). A tremendous association marking the beginning of Steve Fisher's impressive career as a screenwriter, and an uncommon title in jacket, written the same year--a novel informed by his experiences in the US Navy.

        Now, Voyager

Houghton Mifflin Company Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1941. First. First edition. Contemporary gift inscription and owner name stamp, modest wear at the spine ends, an about very good copy in a good plus, edgeworn and price-clipped dustwrapper with shallow chipping at the spine ends. Novel of a repressed woman who sets out on a cruise to discover freedom and life. Basis for the film featuring Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, and two cigarettes. Reportedly Davis, who took then-unheard-of chances with the role by deliberately gaining weight and foregoing makeup, extensively reworked the original screenplay herself, incorporating more of the novel's dialogue. Though she missed the Oscar, the movie was Davis's most successful film of the decade. A nice, presentable copy of an exceptionally scarce novel. .

        Biggles Flies Again

Penguin, 1941.. First edition Penguin fiction title; undated inside, but published in November 1941. Something of a Penguin mystery: why publish this title in the adult series when Puffin Story Books already existed? Why should it be - or become - so rare? This copy is not the even rarer plain rear covered version; it carries the usual Genasprin ad. What is particularly rare about this copy is its condition which is effectively fine. There is a tiny tear on the rear cover, otherwise it is as it must have appeared in the bookshops in 1941; bright, clean, uncreased and complete. And thus, possibly unique.

        o. T. [Flüchtlinge]. Oel auf Leinwand.

45 x 27 cm, Links unten monogr. u. dat. FM 1941.

Frederic Prokosch (New York: Frederic Prokosch). 1941. First. First edition. Marbled paper self-wrappers with printed paper label. 12mo. Fine. One of 33 copies. Signed by the author. Although not stated in the book, a penciled note indicates that Prokosch recalled having this printed at the Peter Pauper press. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books." Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. OCLC locates four copies. .

Roosevelt, served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971.         Midsommardröm i fattighuset. Skådespel i tre akter.

(Korrektur.) Namnteckning i blyerts, »G.

(For official use only) by Abteilung fur Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen (Department for War Maps and Surveying), and was intended for use by the Generalstab des Heeres (German General Staff). At the outset of World War II, Germany's plans for the occupation of various countries in Europe were fluid. Although an invasion of Ireland - codenamed Unternehmen Grun (Operation Green) - was not one of their immediate priorities, the German High Command continued to gather together and publish detailed information to prepare the ground for such an eventuality. Operation Green was first published in restricted form in 1940, being greatly expanded in 1941 to include the present two volumes We have been unable to find any instance of this important and rare two-volume set having appeared for sale in recent years. A single odd volume (the West and North Coast volume) has appeared on the market; no previous example of this South and East Coast volume containing Belfast and Dublin can be located.         Bristol T.C.69 Aircraft Division Class A- Lectures, Notes, Drawings, Diagrams, etc

n.p. 1941. Period notebook bound in half cloth and hand titled paper covered boards with hand drawn pictorial cover plate of RAF squadron emblum. Thick 4to. Spectacularly illustrated with exceptionally detailed and artistic pen and ink drawings, cut-away diagrams, charts, tables, etc in holograph. With the outbreak of the European war, the British Royal Air Force engaged various aircraft manufacturers in the technical training of many of its fighter pilots. These flyers would attend lectures on all aspects of aerodynamics and aeronautics delivered by the company&#39;s designers, technicians, etc. This was the case with M.A Banister, the owner and author of this notebook. Possessing an immense artistic talent, Bannister filled the pages of his book with extraordinary and often breath taking sketches and diagrams. Many of these pen and ink full page drawings depict stunning full page images of various aircraft including Spitfires, Tiger Moths, Short Sterlings, etc. Also included is a plethora of hand drawn highly detailed technical hand illustrations, many in color. His lecture notes, written in a most legible hand, are copious and plentiful, covering subject matter from aerodynamics to the theory of flight. A truly impressive work which transcends academic study into an object of highly refined graphic art. Without a doubt, one of the most unique items we have ever presented. Minor ware to covers. A Near Fine copy.

REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE (Inscribed Pre-Publication Galley Proof)

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1941. Carson McCullers. REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1941. Pre-publication galley proof. Approximately 11.5" x 6.5" with 146 unnumbered pages, printed on rectos only. INSCRIBED BY MCCULLERS ON THE FIRST PAGE: "For Gene ndrewsky /Best /Carson McCullers." Printed paper label on front cover with a price ($2.00) and a date (January 28th, 1941) written in manuscript in an unknown hand. Publisher's burgundy cloth backstrip over plain grey paper and plain cardboard. Some wear, creasing, and mild damp-staining, but in excellent condition given the fragile nature of its design and purpose. REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, McCullers' second book, is a menacing Southern Noir, a dark step forward from her debut novel THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER. Set at a Georgia army base in the 1930s, it follows Captain Penderton, a bisexual whose life is upset by the arrival of Major Langdon, a charming ladies-man whose affair with Penderton's fiery and flirtatious wife becomes the catalyst to a chain of increasingly chaotic action. Both of Carson McCullers' first two novels were set in the deep-fried southern gothic of Georgia in the 1930s and both books share plots that involve the collision of six lonely and highly unusual characters. But REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE's characters are dark, chilling, and shockingly out of control. Quite possibly the most compelling novel of the first half of the 20th Century to deal with homosexuality (as well as masochism, voyeurism, self-mutilation, and adultery). An extraordinary book, sparingly written, brilliantly imagined, not easily forgotten. Note: A galley proof is an early printing of a work, produced after a manuscript has been typeset but before proofreading. They are produced in very small numbers for the author, editors, and proof readers on long sheets of paper with wide margins in a plain and inexpensive binding. More polished Advance Reading Copies (ARC) come later, more closely resemble the final published form, and are typically produced in far greater numbers. This remarkable artifact was purchased along with some of the author's personal effects and may well be the only surviving example. The recipient, Gene Andrewsky, as yet hasn't been traced. Basis for the fascinating if unsuccessful 1967 film starring Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. Housed in a quarter-morocco clamshell case. . Signed. First Edition.
