A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books." Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture his butterfly books. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. Of the 22 copies OCLC locates eight copies in institutions. .

        Mildred Pierce

Knopf 1941 - A prime artifact of Hollywood history. Joan Crawford's copy of the first edition of James M. Cain's Mildred Pierce. Presented to her in 1947 by a noted Hollywood director one year after she won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Mildred Pierce in the classic film. A good first edition book in a good dust jacket, with a full page inscription from Cain before the movie was made to his close friend and prominent movie director Marshall Neilan, noting that he was the first to ever read the book. Neilan later inscribed the book to Joan Crawford shortly after the film came out. Neilan was a prominent Hollywood figure at the time, having written Hell's Angels and having directed many successful movies, but he did not end up directing Mildred Pierce. However, it is likely that Cain gave it to his good friend first to read in the hopes that he would help get it produced. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. $7,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
