Sunburned Ulysses

Lisboa: (Frederic Prokosch). 1941. First. First edition. Decorated marbled wrappers with white printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 22 copies, this copy is unnumbered, and marked in the author's hand as the "Author's Copy," Signed by the author, and inscribed by him beneath his signature: "with much love, for my Mami." A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books." Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally, he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. Of the 22 copies, OCLC locates five copies in institutions. .

Acquired directly from the publisher's files, and most likely the publisher George Macy's very own copy. Perhaps the most stunning and underrated of the early books from the press.

THE BLACK STALLION (1st Printing Inscribed By the Author in Original 1st Printing DJ)

New York: Random House, 1941. Farley, Walter. THE BLACK STALLION. New York: Random House, 1941. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING (so stated). A Very Good copy (finger-soiling, spine slightly darkened, edges dusty) in the original publisher's decorated cloth which has received expert restoration to its spine tips and corners. It has been married to a Good To Very Good ORIGINAL PRICED FIRST PRINTING DUST JACKET with all correct first printing points.. The Dust Jacket is spine-faded and has some chips, stains, and creases. It also has been trimmed a half-inch by the publisher and "Random House" has not been stamped on the spine. It's our conjecture that a number of first printing DJs were cut down by the publisher in preparation to fit war-time smaller format editions. This first printing dust jacket is exceedingly rare (we've only seen or heard of six or so in the last twenty years). Far more important, this copy is ONE OF ONLY TWO SIGNED FIRST PRINTING COPIES KNOWN TO US (the other still residing with the author's heirs). "To Delores -/ My very extra-special/ girl friend./ Love,/ Walter/ Sept. 3rd 1940]/ P.S. Let your sister Sue, and/your mother and your dad/take a "peek" at the Black, too, / won't you?" THE BLACK STALLION along with the other 21 books in the Black Stallion series published between 1941-1983 have sold tens of millions of copies over the last seven decades. The fine 1979 film adaptation of THE BLACK STALLION won several Oscar nominations. This is a chance to acquire THE copy of the enduring book which gave birth to what the New York Times called "the most famous fictional horse of the [20th] century." Housed in a beautiful custom matching black-and-red slipcase. . Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good or Better. Illus. by Keith Ward.

An attractively bound copy in clean woven dark green cloth stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and on the spine where the gilt has faded. Dropping In. Canada Goose

New York: The Derrydale Press, 1941. No. 1 of an edition of 250 prints, signed. Image 19 x 15-1/2 inches, plus caption and margins; handsomely matted and framed to 32 x 25 inches overall. Hand-colored aquatint, signed in pencil "Roland Clark" at lower right. Fine condition. Original black frame with gilt rule. Siegel 194-95; Ordeman, The Aquatints, Drypoints and Etchings of The Derrydale Press, pp. 29-31; Ordeman (2005) pp. 37-48. Provenance: Eugene V. Connett 3rd; his son, Eugene V. Connett IV . "Roland Clark's works are among the most sought after" states Siegel in his bibliography of The Derrydale Press. Two of Clark's paintings, each depicting a single bird in its appropriate landscape, were issued in editions of 250 prints from 1937 through 1941; this print, "Dropping In" was the exception, as it shows a single goose in the foreground and a pair of geese in the middle distance as well. Echoing Siegel, Ordeman notes, "The Roland Clark waterfowl prints are among the most highly regarded of the works published by the Press, and they certainly are the best known of the Derrydale prints." Roland Clark (1874-1957) was one of America's finest sporting artists; his etchings, drypoints, aquatints, oils and watercolors are highly sought after, as are his four books, Stray Shots, Gunner's Dawn, Roland Clark's Etchings, and Pot Luck. He studied at The Art Student's League in New York, had a number of successful one-man shows, and won the 1938 Federal Duck Stamp Competition. The popularity of his work has remained undiminished over the years. THE MOST DESIRABLE COPY, EUGENE CONNETT'S OWN

[Archive]: A Collection of Love Letters and Personal Correspondence sent to Yulla Lipchitz (1941-1955)

(1941-1955). An extraordinary collection of nearly 300 letters, consisting of about 250 love letters and 50 letters of related personal correspondence, sent to Yulla Lipchitz, sculptor and photographer, and the wife of the renowned sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Included in the collection are 12 holographic letters by Jacques Lipchitz, 8 black and white photographs of Yulla and two of her lovers taken before her marriage to Lipchitz, several telegrams and post cards, a few of Yulla's draft replies, and several pieces of manuscript and printed ephemera. Although Yulla, her first husband Frederick Mott, and most of her correspondents were German-Jews who fled Germany in the late 1930s, nearly all of the letters are written in English (with occasional flourishes in German), and nearly all abound with deeply felt emotional passions for her, as indicated by such frequent salutations as: "Darling Pussilein, my love!" -- "Darlichingen! Ich Kusse dich" -- "Yullalein, love, Kisses!" Over 150 of the letters are from Walter J. Fischel, an important German-Jewish scholar known internationally for his pioneering studies of Oriental Jewry, and two other men (about 25 letters each) with whom Yulla was having illicit affairs during the War years. The letters of all three men are remarkable for their impassioned, often wild declarations of love, and their frequent pleas to arrange meetings and to get married, if Yulla's husband would grant her a divorce. In the end, after an attempt to reconcile with her husband in 1945-1946, all four men were no match for Jacques Lipchitz, who first met Yulla in 1944, and married her in 1948. .

These flyers would attend lectures on all aspects of aerodynamics and aeronautics delivered by the company's designers, technicians, etc. This was the case with M.A Banister, the owner and author of this notebook. Possessing an immense artistic talent, Bannister filled the pages of his book with extraordinary and often breath taking sketches and diagrams. Many of these pen and ink full page drawings depict stunning full page images of various aircraft including Spitfires, Tiger Moths, Short Sterlings, etc. Also included is a plethora of hand drawn highly detailed technical hand illustrations, many in color. His lecture notes, written in a most legible hand, are copious and plentiful, covering subject matter from aerodynamics to the theory of flight. A truly impressive work which transcends academic study into an object of highly refined graphic art. Without a doubt, one of the most unique items we have ever presented. Minor ware to covers. A Near Fine copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In very good condition in a dust jacket with some a chip to the foot of the spine. Eudora Welty won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize and was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In it she examines Mississippi, her state of birth, through the eyes of its inhabitants, and contemplates a realistic view of the extant racial relations. She brings to A Curtain of Green her graceful writing and perspective that sees Mississippi as an often comical world of near magical wonder in its ability to remain mundane in light of its struggles.
