Bristol T.C.69 Aircraft Division Class A- Lectures, Notes, Drawings, Diagrams, etc.

n.p. 1941. - Spectacularly illustrated with exceptionally detailed and artistic pen and ink drawings, cut-away diagrams, charts, tables, etc in holograph. Thick 4to. Period notebook bound in half cloth and hand titled paper covered boards with hand drawn pictorial cover plate of RAF squadron emblum. With the outbreak of the European war, the British Royal Air Force engaged various aircraft manufacturers in the technical training of many of its fighter pilots. These flyers would attend lectures on all aspects of aerodynamics and aeronautics delivered by the company's designers, technicians, etc. This was the case with M.A Banister, the owner and author of this notebook. Possessing an immense artistic talent, Bannister filled the pages of his book with extraordinary and often breath taking sketches and diagrams. Many of these pen and ink full page drawings depict stunning full page images of various aircraft including Spitfires, Tiger Moths, Short Sterlings, etc. Also included is a plethora of hand drawn highly detailed technical hand illustrations, many in color. His lecture notes, written in a most legible hand, are copious and plentiful, covering subject matter from aerodynamics to the theory of flight. A truly impressive work which transcends academic study into an object of highly refined graphic art. Without a doubt, one of the most unique items we have ever presented. Minor ware to covers. A Near Fine copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Collection of Original Illustrated Artwork including New Yorker-related material

A collection of original art, prints, and biographical material by or related to the Swiss-born artist Paul Degen (1941-2007), who created more than 30 original covers for The New Yorker, and countless illustrations for Harper's, Esquire, Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times. The collection is housed in three portfolios. The first portfolio contains 56 original works. A few are sketches, but most are fully realized and full color drawings or paintings. Most are apparently intended to be submitted for magazines, and several are clearly marked as intended to be New Yorker covers, although we cannot determine if they were ever used, and indeed are relatively certain they were at least not used in their current form. The first binder also contains 2 etchings by Degen. Sizes vary, and all of the works are Signed in full by the artist. The second portfolio contains 22 original works, all of a sexual or erotic nature. They range from relatively demure nudes to elaborately contrived, and indeed in some cases impossibly ambitious sexual images. Additionally in the second folder are 3 additional etchings, and 4 silk screens, some of which have been altered by hand, all on erotic or sexual subjects. As before, all are Signed in full. Also in the portfolio is some biographical material on Degen, including an article on the artist by Steven Heller. The third portfolio contains 49 original works, all also all of a sexual or erotic nature. These tend to be stand nude and nude studies with several more, lets says, fanciful erotic images. The images are produced in a range of medium -- pen and ink, charcoal, watercolors and gauche -- and a range of states, from simple sketches to finished images. And all are Signed by Degen. In all, nearly 129 original works. .

BETWEEN THE ACTS. Presentation by John Lehmann.

The Hogarth Press, London 1941 - Woolf, Virginia. BETWEEN THE ACTS. Presentation by John Lehmann. London: The Hogarth Press, 1941. First Edition. Woolf, Virginia. BETWEEN THE ACTS. Presentation by John Lehmann. London: The Hogarth Press, 1941. 8vo., Publisher's blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper printed in black designed by Vanessa Bell and showing modest loss. Inscribed in black ink on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: Demetrios / With best wishes / from / John Lehmann / 24 vii. 41". "John Lehmann played a significant role in bringing Between The Acts to publication. When Woolf felt the novel not worth publishing, she and Leonard agreed to give Lehmann the 'casting vote'. (VW Letters Vol. 6). Lehmann replied to her letter praising the novel however, she had decided it was 'too silly and trivial'. She committed suicide soon after writing this to Lehmann and in his memoir, Thrown To The Woolfs, Lehmann speaks of bringing the book out as a kind of homage to her". Hussey, Mark. An important association copy. Published July 1941. Kirkpatrick A26a; Woolmer 488. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

World War II Signal Corps Diary

Monmouth, New Jersey / England. 1941-1942. A fascinating diary of 2nd Lieutenant Leslie Wright, Jr. while serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps starting in September of 1941, just before the advent of the U.S. entry into WWII, at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, September 1942 where he was deployed overseas. The remarkable document describes the early days of the corps itself, the term "radar" having only just been accepted by the Army in 1940, along with a harrowing journey in a tiny convoy to England with minimal protection, and other personal accounts of his time during the war. Pasted within are stamps, various headlines, such as "U.S. to call up 10,000,000 -- war on Axis," and photographs of an assortment of women he made acquaintance with throughout his tour of duty. 24mo. Brown leatherette "A Page A Day Diary" with lock and clasp. Rubbed with some loose pages, very good. .
