FAN MAIL, number 3. February -- March 1941

The sheets have old fold creases, minor edge nicks and tears. (especially the sheet of onion skin with the Clarke contribution),. old rust stains from pin, overall rumpling and dustiness; generally. in good to very good condition. Not in Pavlat and Evans. Rare,. perhaps unique. (#117103). Chain letter with contributions by six authors, five of them typed (top copies), one handwritten (Clarke's contribution), four signed with initials or pen-name (Clarke's is signed "Ego"), written over a period from February to March 1941, presented later by Clarke to E. J. "Ted" Carnell. On five sheets of paper, approximately 21 x 26 cm., two of which have writing on both recto and verso, for a total of about 2500 words. Together with a note-sized circulation record (with names and addresses of writer/recipients, dates "Recd" and "Sent on"). The five leaves are pinned together and the circulation record has a note, in Clarke's hand: "Ted for you." This refers to E. J. Carnell, important British agent, editor and anthologist of science fiction, and a noted member of British sf fandom in the 1930s and beyond (the other members of the chain were also enthusiastic members of fandom). The letters are chatty and slangy with much chafing of each other and no substantive discussion of science fiction or other literary topics. At the time of this letter, Clarke was 24, Russell 36, Burke 19, McIlwain 20, Carnell 29: all of them in the early stage of their careers, as was genre science fiction itself, having been cultured in the petri dish of 1930s fandom and pulp fiction. This chain letter provides a unique window into that world. Early 1941 was a period of some general historical significance, of course, coming right after the Battle of Britain, which had been won by Britain under difficult circumstances. The upbeat, even jaunty, tone of the correspondents reflects perhaps the buoyancy of a victorious people as well as the yeastiness of youth. The circulation record has "Copy 1" typed on it, but the meaning of this is unclear. The typescripts here are all top copies. Why would other copies have been produced, especially since only one or possibly two carbons could have been produced on a typewriter? We believe this to be the only copy of this material.

Clivedon, Taplow. 26 August 1941.. One page, on small octavo sheet of letterhead, with one paragraph postscript, in pencil. Accompanied by four 8 x 10 sheets of cyclostyled or hectographed costume drawings, incorporating manuscript captions, by Shaw. Letter fine, the drawings share a uniform patch of damp deterioration at one edge, with some associated brittleness and tears in that area. Shaw writes to his secretary: "My dear Blanche If you are anywhere in the direction of Whitehall Court look in and and [sic] search the Arms & The Man compartment for a bundle of sketches for the costumes, two of which are the original colored drawings and the rest copied outlines. Two sets of these outlines will be enough to bring to Ayot with the colored ones. We shall have to color them for Pascal. I am working at the new script now ...." The letter continues with details of arrangements for going to Ayot, and concludes: "No news. All serene here. GBS." The accompanying costume drawings are printed in blue ink on cream stock, and three of them reproduce Shaw's manuscript captions in the printing. Two are rather elaborate, incorporating multiple inset details in addition to the main drawing. The Sidney P. Albert Shaw collection at Brown includes four such cyclostyled costume drawings for ARMS & THE MAN, with indications that Shaw produced a total of six ca. 1894 for a production of the play. The undertaking here most likely is indicative of their reuse associated with work on a prospective film adaptation of the play. Gabriel Pascal's film of MAJOR BARBARA was released earlier that month, and his version of PYGMALION appeared in 1939. And although Pascal went on to produce CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA in 1945, and ANDROCLES AND THE LION in 1952, this film adaptation appears not to have come to fruition.

5 Typed Letters Signed ("Dick") to the wife of his mentor and old friend, Adam C. ("Kit") Carson

Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York, may 8 - december 8, 1941 - When Richard Byrd was just twelve years old in 1900, Adam ("Kit") Carson, a friend and associate of his father's in the family's law firm, invited the young Byrd to visit him in the Philippine Islands. Young Byrd, characteristically, accepted immediately and enthusiastically, displaying the curiosity and yearning for adventure that marked his later life. But the relationship with Carson grew and deepened, and in this sequence of letters to Carson's wife, written over forty years later, Byrd's reverence for his aged and dying friend is apparent. In the first letter, from Boston, dated May 20th, Byrd writes: "Dear Eleanor, Will it be too late to come to Riverton next Tuesday? . Don't forget that I am going through this with you. I know how tough it is." Then, on June 2, "I am writing this letter to let you know that I am with you constantly in thought and spirit. I have Kit's photograph in my room and I cannot feel that he is gone. Indeed, he can't be absolutely gone because he will be as he has always been a real factor in my day to day life . " Again, on July 9, "I want to tell you again please not to think that I am not constantly thinking of you and the children and, as for old Kit, he is so much in my thoughts that I have had several dreams about him lately. He is not non- existent for me because he is still a real factor in my life as he has always been . " 8-1/2 x 10 inches. Each one page. Final letter is torn and tape-repaired, with no loss of text; others are very good to fine

[Archive]: A Collection of Love Letters and Personal Correspondence sent to Yulla Lipchitz (1941-1955)

(1941-1955). An extraordinary collection of nearly 300 letters, consisting of about 250 love letters and 50 letters of related personal correspondence, sent to Yulla Lipchitz, sculptor and photographer, and the wife of the renowned sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Included in the collection are 12 holographic letters by Jacques Lipchitz, 8 black and white photographs of Yulla and two of her lovers taken before her marriage to Lipchitz, several telegrams and post cards, a few of Yulla's draft replies, and several pieces of manuscript and printed ephemera. Although Yulla, her first husband Frederick Mott, and most of her correspondents were German-Jews who fled Germany in the late 1930s, nearly all of the letters are written in English (with occasional flourishes in German), and nearly all abound with deeply felt emotional passions for her, as indicated by such frequent salutations as: "Darling Pussilein, my love!" -- "Darlichingen! Ich Kusse dich" -- "Yullalein, love, Kisses!" Over 150 of the letters are from Walter J. Fischel, an important German-Jewish scholar known internationally for his pioneering studies of Oriental Jewry, and two other men (about 25 letters each) with whom Yulla was having illicit affairs during the War years. The letters of all three men are remarkable for their impassioned, often wild declarations of love, and their frequent pleas to arrange meetings and to get married, if Yulla's husband would grant her a divorce. In the end, after an attempt to reconcile with her husband in 1945-1946, all four men were no match for Jacques Lipchitz, who first met Yulla in 1944, and married her in 1948. .
