Three large octavos & two quartos. Vol. I: xliv, 886pp. Vol. II, part I: xliv + 858pp. Vol. II, part II: 859-1397pp. The first three parts are facsimile reprints of the First editions originally printed in 1914 and 1925. Gilt decorated maroon cloth with gold lettering on spine. Color frontispiece in Vol. I of Zeus from a Pompeian wall painting, appendixes and index. Profusely illustrated with black & white and duo tone reproductions of photographs, drawings, paintings, maps & plans. Color and fold-out plates. Fold-out maps & plates inside pockets affixed to rear endpapers in Vol. I & Vol. II, part II. The fourth and fifth parts, that is: Vol III, parts I and II were published by Cambridge University Press in 1940 and are First editions. Vol III, part I: xxx + lxix plates, 974pp. Vol III, part II: 975- 1300pp + xxii plates. Blue cloth with elaborate gilt design on upper boards, gilt titling to spines, well illustrated in b&w and colour with fold outs, appendix & index. One of the great twentieth century works on the history of religion and mythology. As the title suggests, it is essentially a study of the Greek deity Zeus, with the first volume, 'God of the Bright Sky', examining early conceptions of Zeus as a god of clear, daylight skies, whilst the subesequent volumes, 'God of the Dark Sky' examine Zeus as a god of thunder, lightning, tempest, etc. The author, Arthur Bernard Cook (1868 – 1952), was a professor of Greek at Bedford College, London, who went on to hold the position of Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. A friend of Sir James Frazer, he and fellow classicists Jane Ellen Harrison, Gilbert Murray, and Francis M. Cornford, became known as 'The Cambridge Ritualists" whose innovative ideas on Greek myth and ritual scandalized and then revolutionised the world of classical studies in the first half of the twentieth century. In the course of a laudatory essay on Cook in the DNB, it is said of his work on Zeus: "This study shows a fabulous command of every kind of material which could be brought to bear on the subject—ancient literature, monumental evidence, the Near Eastern background, and folklore and folk-ways from all parts, all presented with supreme accuracy and so indexed as to be instantly available. Zeus would be indispensable to students in many fields, even if every single conclusion of its author were rejected. Perhaps no one has equalled Cook in his ability to present the views of others with generous fairness and to state objections to his own; no one has surpassed him in awareness of the fact that the ancients took their gods seriously." Given the printing history of this work, which was never published in it's entirety at one, it is extremely unusual to find a complete set. Indeed most "sets" offered for sale are incomplete as they lack the final Volume III, parts I and II. Light bumping to corners and spine ends, cloth lightly rubbed overall a few light marks from from use to page egdes. Vols. I and II have a few light spots to cloth, otherwise tight, clean VG+ copies. Vols. I & II issued without dust jackets. Vol III, parts I and II include original VG dust jackets. (dust jackets lightly rubbed, clipped). Mixed set: First Editions & Facsimile Reprints [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dusk of Dawn, An Essay Toward An Autobiography of a Race Concept

Harcourt Brace, New York 1940 - First edition of W. E. B. DuBois' autobiography. This is an ex-library book (from the oldest library building in the United States) with a very rare dustjacket, red topstaining. 8vo. 334 pp. Brown cloth binding. At seventy-two Dr. DuBois wrote a stirring and noble record of his life. He takes us from his boyhood in New England, where he was born of French, Dutch, and African blood and where he lived a polite and serene life in Great Barrington, Masschusetts, to his first youthful glimpse of the color and spirit of his race in the Deep South. We watch his education at Harvard, where he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, his two years at the Universities of Paris and Berlin, his fourteen years as Professor of Economics and History at Atlanta University, his thirty-one years as director of Publications and Research for the N.A.A.C.P., and his editorship of Crisis since 1909. We follow his experiences during the World War, and his participation in such causes celebres as the Scottsboro case and his work for anti-lynching legislation. Dusk of Dawn is the culmination of a distinguished career of letters and scholarship. It is written in the fullness of an unusual and crusading life. It is an American document -- the history of a native son who sees in the dusk of his days the dawn of a new and better existence for his people. Light foxing to endpapers, library discard stamps, pocket removed from rear endpaper. Library label on bottom of spine. 1/8" chipping at top of spine, two chips at bottom of dustjacket, paperclip indentation on ffep, brownspotting to page edges. We have chosen not to remove the library cover to protect the rare dustjacket. Despite ex-library, a very good copy of this rare and important book. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Prime Minister Churchill's Address to the Italian People December 23rd 1940 together with the Christmas Day Message from His Majesty King George VI to His People Broadcast December 25th, 1940 and the Christmas Day Message from Prime Minister Mackenzie King to the Canadian Army Abroad and At Home

Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company, Winnipeg 1940 - This is an exceedingly rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's Address to the Italian People of 23rd December 1940. Broadcasting from the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill sought to assure the Italians of Britain's historic friendship with Italy and place blame for the conflict on Mussolini. Churchill's speech is published here with two others - King George VI's Christmas Day Message of 25th December 1940 and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's Christmas Day message to the Canadian Army. This speech pamphlet is unusual in several respects - its publication, its survival, and its superlative condition. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pages 530-532) the publisher - Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company - was in business from 1902 to 1942. In an exuberant surge of patriotism, the company published over 40 booklets in the "Universal Life for Victory Series", a few of which were speeches by Churchill. Apparently, there were copyright concerns in the office of the Prime Minister, as well as with his British and Canadian publishers. Prickly correspondence was exchanged, but also some correspondence recognizing the propaganda value of Universal Life's efforts. Eventually the matter was closed. This copy, a remarkable survivor, is in truly outstanding, fine condition. The pamphlet is bound in wire stitched paper wraps, measures 6 inches x 3.5 inches, and is 14 pages in length. Churchill's speech occupies all of pages 8 through 14. The pamphlet is pristine inside and out - crisp, clean, and bright with no wear or markings of any kind. Searching for flaws, we note that one of the two binding staples (both still perfectly tight) shows just a trivial hint of rust, but not even enough to stain the adjacent paper. It is hard to imagine many copies of this perishable and unusual wartime publication still exist; a superior example is improbable. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen D77, unknown to Woods. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Christmas Card

[c.1940's]. 5-3/4" x 4-3/4". A Christmas card from the noted black activist, written long before he converted to Islam and became the most outspoken and militant agitator for black civil rights in the early 1960s. Malcolm X's incendiary rhetoric in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement helped polarize the country around issues of race and also helped open the way for civil and legal reforms on an unprecedented scale. This card has a sleigh scene on the front and a standard Christmas and New Year's greeting inside. Signed in full as "Malcolm Little," with the additional sentiment, in holograph: "I hope you haven't forgotten me." Folded once, apparently to fit into a square envelope (not present). Very slight general wear; still near fine. Autograph material by Malcolm X is extremely scarce, particularly such an early example as this, preceding as it does his notoriety.

        Monday's Cat

Wraps, a Spiral, and a Custom-made Quarter Morocco Slipcase for both items. Very Good. An unpublished manuscript by the popular juvenile dog and cat illustrator Diana Thorne. N.d., circa 1940. It is unclear why this work would not have been published. There is an illegible pencil note that may be saying, "Very rough", and so it is possible the publisher was not thrilled with its verses, and this might have been enough to discourage Thorne, who clearly was never short of viable projects, since she was a most prolific of animal illustrators, both for books and magazines as well as private commissions. In this anthology, there is short light verse for each day of the week, describing a different cat, who is pictured on the facing page. In the spiral notebook all the verses are typed, while in a second wrapped bound booklet the photos are mostly worked out while only one verse, Monday's, is in what appears a proposed ornamental handwriting, and two other days have the typed versed pasted in, with additional illustrations underneath these three. The work was one in progress and not completed in full, but the primary illustrations of animals are all present and if not in what would have been their final form, close to that. Thorne was a master of capturing animal movement and personality, and here she lives up to her reputation.
