A Speech by The Prime Minister The Right Honourable Winston Churchill in the House of Commons August 20th, 1940

London: His Majesty's Stationary Office (H.M.S.O.), The Baynard Press, 1940. First edition. Pamphlet. This is a premium copy of the first edition of one of Churchill's most famous speeches. Churchill's speech to Parliament of August 20th, 1940 was occasioned by the Battle of Britain and famously honored the RAF pilots who almost single-handedly prevented Nazi invasion of England. Churchill encapsulated and immortalized the struggle when he uttered the words: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." The famous bibliographic reference Printing and the Mind of Man, which surveys the impact of the printed word on Western Civilization, singles out this edition of this speech. Printed deep red on light gray paper wraps and wire stitched, this speech pamphlet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is 16 pages in length. Prices of this edition have soared in recent years. Given the fragility of the edition, most copies understandably suffer from significant wear, soiling, tanning, and spotting. This copy is exceptional, in near fine condition. While worn and damaged copies are not especially rare, it has become quite difficult to find copies as well-preserved as this one. The gray covers are crisp, complete and firmly attached with no spotting, no losses, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. Both the gray paper wraps and the deep red print are manifestly brighter than typically seen, with no apparent age-toning. We note only a hint of slight creasing and insignificant soiling. There are no hinge splits. Both binding staples are firmly intact, marred only by a bit of surface corrosion so light that it has barely affected the adjacent paper. The contents are immaculately clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A131.1, Woods A60(a), Printing and the Mind of Man (PMM) 424.

["Associated Willkie Clubs" / 1940 Campaign Materials]

(New York and Washington D.C.), [1940]. Very good. Substantial archive containing a wide variety of printed materials, several dozen individual in all. Generally very good. A complete list of contents available upon request. A substantive archive of campaign materials from the U.S. Presidential race of 1940 belonging to Harry Bernard Glazer (1924-2014), student at Woodrow Wilson High School and leader in the Washington D.C. chapter of The Young Willkie Clubs. Glazer was managing editor of THE INDEPENDENT, a mimeographed newsletter of the organization aimed at young voters. Included is the complete, ten-issue run of THE INDEPENDENT (OCLC locates no copies), a November 1940 TLS from Willkie to Glazer, three American Electrotype offset lithographic plates for printing flyers of Willkie and his running mate Charles L. McNary, as well as dozens of pieces of ephemera and internal campaign correspondence concerning messaging, organizing, voter turnout, administration, platform issues, etc. A dark horse candidate, Willkie came from the moderate end of the party to win the Republican nomination and challenge Franklin Roosevelt for the presidency. His liberal leanings appealed to many voters and Willkie enjoyed a wide - though grassroots and fragmented - base of support, earning more votes than any previous Republican candidate in his losing effort. This archive represents a worthwhile view of the campaignÂ’s interior machinery as well as its efforts to court young voters.

        Five Young American Poets

Norfolk, Conn.: New Directions,, 1940. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine browned and gilt dulled, extremities a little rubbed and faded, occasional light finger mark but overall contents bright. An excellent copy in a toned and faintly rubbed jacket. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front pastedown to his lover, Mary Jane Christenson Heming: "To Jane, with Love, John, 25 Nov [?] 1940". Accompanied by an unpublished 12-line manuscript poem and its envelope on which Heming has written: "Poem written to me by John Berryman about 1941?"2?". Written on Harvard University stationary, signed "John" and dated "Thursday night", it is an amorous address to Heming in which the repeated line "Come in the cold night" is underlined. The first two lines read: "Write not in legal language; write not at all, but come, the snow is settling on the trees." Heming had been a student of Berryman's friend Bhain Campbell. According to Ernest Milton Halliday, an intimate friend of Berryman from 1933 to 1943, who also had a relationship with Heming, "she was so beautiful that it was an aesthetic experience merely to watch her take her clothes off or put them on, and her approach to sex was disarmingly innocent. It was her custom to bring with her one or another of the Winnie the Pooh books by A. A. Milne; these she liked to read aloud while we lay in bed, which tended to spin around the lovemaking an aura of sweet-natured children playing in a haystack. I asked her if she had done the same with John; yes, she said, but he didn't think much of Milne, and sometimes hurt her feelings by ridiculing her enthusiasm." The other young poets of the title are Mary Barnard, Randall Jarrell, W. R. Moses and George Marion O'Donnell. This book is their first commercial appearance and precedes Berryman's and Randall Jarrell's first separate books by two years.

        Notholirion campanulatum

[London.]: Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society.. [ 1940].. Handcolored lithograph, sheet size approximately 21 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, matted to 25 3/4 x 18 inches. Area of the print that was exposed in the mat opening has evenly toned; otherwise very good, clean condition with bright color. This handcolored lithograph was published with Part VII of the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium. This important botanical monograph highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang...' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with a total of 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase this stunning bloom, with botanical details at the lower left. The habitat of this lily is noted in the text (supplied in facsimile) as being Western China, north-west Yunnan and Northern Burma. .
