Faint vertical fold at center, oxidation to staples, with light edgewear, a few tiny tears, and a handful of small, faint stains to terminal leaf; text and illustrations bright and fresh; Very Good+. Final issue of Ray Bradbury's science fiction fanzine. At 18 years old, shortly after graduating high school in 1939, Bradbury produced "FuFa" with the help of Forrest J. Ackerman, who lent him $90 for the fanzine. "Bradbury met Ackerman through the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society, which Ackerman helped to found. It was there that Bradbury also met Hannes Bok and Emil Petaja. Both were to contribute to Futuria Fantasia; Petaja offered his fiction and Bok contributed stories and poetry, as well as designing the covers and doing the interior illustrations for all four issues, plus the cover for a fifth issue that was never printed" ( The present issue contains an editorial by Bradbury, as well as two short stories: "The Piper" (written as Ron Reynolds) and "The Flight of the Good Ship Clarissa" (written anonymously). This issue notable for containing Robert A. Heinlein's only fanzine appearance, a pseudonymously-written story titled "Heil!" (written as Lyle Munroe). With additional contributions by Damon Knight, Hannes Bok, Henry Kuttner, J. Harvey Haggard, and Joseph E. Kelleam. An important and early vehicle for Bradbury's fiction, and a remarkably well-preserved example. Rare; OCLC notes just four institutions holding any issues (UC Riverside, Concordia, Texas A&M, Ransom Center).

This is the original watercolor for the top of a cube puzzle box (and also used as one of the guide sheets for assembling the puzzle). No publication information, circa 1940. The art measures 6.75 x 5" on board 7.5x6" and is fine condition. Snow White and all 7 of the Dwarfs are pictures in vibrant colors. The actual puzzle lacks one of the cubes otherwise it is in excellent condition with the 3 other guide sheets laid-in the original box with th eartwork reproduced in reduced size on the cover. The puzzle also includes Hansel and Gretel and 2 other stories.

      (Avon, Connecticut): Avon Old Farms Press. 1940. First. First edition. Quarter cloth and paper over boards with printed label on front board. A trifle soiled, very near fine. A presentation copy from the proprietor of the school: "For Mr. & Mrs. DeWitt Wallace with appreciation from Theodate Pope Riddle." The Wallace's were publishers, philanthropists, and founders of the Reader's Digest. An anthology of articles from various sources including William Allen White, Harry Emerson Fosdick, "The Yellow Man's Burden" by Matsumoto, Archibald Rutledge, Nicholas Murray Butler, etc., as well as the inclusion of the oft-reprinted "A Message to Garcia," written by Elbert Hubbard, a fellow passenger of Pope's on the Lusitania, and who was one of the more than a thousand casualties.One of the most fascinating survivors of the Lusitania disaster was an Ohio-born, middle-aged American female self-taught architect named Theodate Pope (later Riddle) who was with a friend on her way to England for a Spiritualist conference. The Lusitania sank in 18 minutes and the crew was unable to stop the ship because the steering mechanism was jammed, thus very few boats were launched and most survivors went into the water including Theodate Pope. Her maid, and her traveling companion, Edwin Friend, were both lost in the sinking but Pope managed to survive several hours in the water, although for much of that time she was unconscious. She later published her own very vivid account of the sinking in small editions - we've searched and never found either in over thirty years.Attending Miss Porter's School for Young Ladies in Farmington, Connecticut, she became enamored of this city's architecture. Despite being self-taught she received several important commissions, mostly for schools and private residences including Hop Brook School and Highfield (now Highfield Golf course) in Middlebury, Connecticut. Perhaps her proudest achievement was the founding of the Avon School in Connecticut, and aside from a hiatus during World War II when it served as a convalescent center for blind veterans, is still going strong today, nearly 70 years after her death. She also designed the buildings around the school, and is considered one of the first important women architects in America. More information is available about her at the website of the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the hall of fame in 1994. This is the first signed copy of any book by her that we've seen. .

"Typed Letter Signed, ""Margaret Mitchell Marsh,"" 2 pages, 7.25"" x 11"" on her personal stationery, Atlanta, Georgia, February 19, 1940, to Robert Saltmarsh, a New Bedford, Massachusetts bookseller concerning the film adaptation of her 1936 novel, Gone With the Wind. Horizontal creases, a few toned spots, minor tape residue on verso of second page, else fine. Mitchell writes in full: ""There was no need for you to recall yourself and your 1936 letter to me; I remember it with too much pleasure to forget it. I have a good memory for handwriting and when I saw the address on your recent letter and the New Bedford postmark, I said to my husband, 'I know this is a letter from Mr. Saltmarsh.' (You see, my married name is Marsh and the association of names helped yours to sick in my mind.) And, sure enough, it was from you. Thank you so much for writing me again about the book and the picture, and thank you, too, for the hospitable invitation to visit which you sent us. As to the invitation--it sounds most enticing but I do not know when we can accept it. I am just out of the hospital for abdominal adhesions and, while I have done extraordinarily well, my doctor wishes me to take things easily for a very long time--not so much because of the operation but because the last three and a half years have been strenuous ones and he thinks I need rest and quiet at home. Life has been so rushed and packed in the last few years that I have managed only two trips North. Last June I was in Northampton for a day to receive an honorary Master of Arts degree, which made me very proud and happy. I wanted so much to spend a month in New England, but the pressure of business matters at home made me return immediately. I hope, now that the moving picture of 'Gone With the Wind' has been released, my life will quiet down and during the next year I will be able to enjoy the normal things of life, such as traveling about in a leisurely manner. Atlanta had a three-day celebration of the premiere of 'Gone With the Wind.' Everyone seemed to enjoy it very much and many people have gone to see the picture three or four times. It is finishing its tenth week and closing in a few days. I hope to be able to see it again myself. I have read some of the New England papers about the picture and, while I had nothing to do with the production, I could not only help feeling pleased that people outside of the South enjoyed it too. I will never forget your pre-publication kindness about my book and it was a pleasure to hear from you again. I hope some day that I will be in New England and will meet you and Mrs. Saltmarsh."" MGM chose Atlanta as the site of the film's official release and the proud city put on three days of festivities. Georgia Governor Eurity D. Rivers declared December 15, 1939 (the film's release date) an official state holiday. Sadly, due to the prevailing Jim Crow laws, the black cast members, including Hattie McDaniel (who won an Oscar for her role as ""Mammy""), were barred from attending. When Clark Gable learned this, he threatened to boycott the Atlanta premiere, but was persuaded by McDaniel to attend the gala. When the film premiered in Los Angeles, director David O. Selznick insisted McDaniel be featured prominently in the program. (In Atlanta, and throughout the South, the black cast members didn't even appear in promotional material for the film). Mitchell's life did quiet down somewhat after the initial rush of publicity for the film faded, but she remained a celebrity for the remainder of her life. During the Second World War, she leveraged that celebrity to raise funds for the Red Cross and spearheaded fundraising drives for two U.S. Navy warships: the U.S.S. Atlanta (CL-51), an anti-aircraft ship that saw action at Midway. When that ship was sunk at Guadalcanal in November 1942, Mitchell raised funds for a replacement: The U.S.S. Atlanta (CL-104), which she christened in Camden, New Jersey in 1944. "

        Approximately 50 Jindyworobak (and related) publications from the collection of Kenneth Gifford, editor in Victoria of Jindyworobak Publications and author of 'Jindyworobak. Towards an Australian Culture' (the first publication of the Victorian office of Jindyworobak Publications in 1944). There are 13 books by Rex Ingamells, nine of which are inscribed and/or signed copies; these include Gumtops (1935), Forgotten People (1936), Sun-Freedom (1938) and Memory of Hills (1940)

      - There is a rare complete set of the six issues of the periodical 'Venture', with all copies signed by Rex Ingamells: Volume 1, Number 1, July 1937 (the only number in the first series) plus Volume 1, Number 1, April 1939 to the unnumbered fifth issue of May 1940. Other authors represented are Gina Ballantyne (two books); Flexmore Hudson (four books, all signed - one inscribed, one with manuscript corrections); Gifford (one book, signed); William Hart-Smith (two books); 'Ricketty Kate' (one book); Ian Mudie (three books) and Colin Thiele (two books); John Ingamells is represented as editor of 'Cultural Cross-Section' (1941). There is an unbroken run of the Jindyworobak Anthology from the first issue in 1938 to 1950 (two are signed by Rex Ingamells, one is signed by Gifford), as well as a copy of Jindyworobak Review 1938-1948 (but the last three annuals to 1953 are not present). Apart from insignificant chipping to the overlapping edges of a few wrappers, the condition is uniformly fine (although of the seven cloth-bound volumes in the collection, only 'Gumtops' retains its dustwrapper). Fine copies of two essential reference works have been added to the collection; these are 'The Jindyworobaks' by Brian Elliott and 'Australian Little Magazines, 1923-1954' by John Tregenza. With this collection as a foundation, there is the very real possibility of gathering the complete published works of the seminal Jindyworobak movement. To quote Brian Elliott (who was personally involved with the early stages of the movement) in his reappraisal of the real value and effect of the Jindyworobak poetical institutions: 'My conclusion is not that they were a product of exceptional genius, but that the movement was spontaneous, natural and inevitable, and that it had an effect upon the nation - upon the national literature, but also upon the nation itself - that went beyond what was obvious in the poetry. Die Buchausgabe seines im Jahr davor (1941) erschienen Romans "Mars im Widder" wurde von der Nazi-Zensur noch vor der Auslieferung verboten. Manuskripte von Lernet-Holenia sind äußerst selten und in öffentlichen Sammlungen so gut wie nicht vorhanden."Silverstolpe" an dem Lernet bereits in den 20er Jahren zu arbeiten begann, gilt neben "Mars im Widder" als Bravourstück unter den Texten Lernets. Bei dem vorl. Manuskript handelt es sicht wahrscheinlich um die Reinschrift einer Vorstufe zur Drucklegung. Die handschriftl. Widmung richtet sich an Al[exander] Hartwich, einen Freund und Arzt, der Lernet half, einer letzten Einberufung 1945 zu entkommen. Hartwich wurde 1946 Ärztekammerpräsident in Österreich.

      - Otto Flath wuchs als eines von sieben Kindern in Staritzke in einfachen Verhältnissen auf. Mit dem Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges wurde die Situation für die deutsche Familie schwierig, der Vater wurde im Jahr 1917 nach Sibirien verbannt. Erst als er seine Freiheit wieder erlangt hatte, kam die Familie 1919 nach Kiel, wo der damals 13-jährige erstmals eine Schule besuchte. Im Anschluß daran nahm er an der Holzbildhauerklasse der Kunst- und Gewerbeschule Kiel teil. 1932 schloß sich Otto Flath der Künstlergemeinschaft um das Ehepaar Ellen und Willy Burmester an und zog 1935 nach Bad Segeberg, wo ihm 1971 die Ehrenbürgerschaft verliehen wurde. An seinem 75. Geburtstag erhielt er für sein Schaffen das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande.

"I come before the house, on behalf of the Navy, to ask for a few men, some ships, and a little money, to enable them to carry on their work, which has become important to us all at the present time." Thus began Churchill's 27 February 1940 speech to the House of Commons during the Second World War. Churchill had served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911-1915 until he was scapegoated and forced from the Cabinet over the Dardanelles.  After his "Wilderness Years" of the 1930s, which Churchill spent out of power and out of favor, warning of the dangers of Nazi Germany, Churchill was called back to the Admiralty in September 1939, following the German invasion of Poland. There he began work again "in the same room, and at the same desk, where he had worked as first Lord" during the First World War.  (Gilbert, Volume VI, p.4)   By May 1940 Churchill would become Prime Minister. On February 27, 1940, Churchill presented his Estimates for Naval expenditure to the House of Commons. No precise figures were revealed about expenditures and planned strength of the Navy – after all, “there is no need to tell the enemy more than is good for him about what we are doing." In his speech of more than an hour and a half, Churchill covered numerous topics – losses of merchant ships, German outrages upon fishing fleets and small unarmed merchant vessels, and British successes in capturing cargo ships destined for Germany. Churchill concluded his speech by saying “I will not make any prophecies about the future which is doubly veiled by the obscurities and uncertainties of war. But personally I shall not be content, nor do I think the House should be content, if we do not reach and maintain a control of the seas equal to the highest standards of the last war and enable the Navy once again to play a decisive part in the general victory of the Allies." This pamphlet publication of Churchill's speech in self-wraps is printed on quite thin, cheap wartime paper, staple-bound, in self-wraps with a dropped-head title and no title page. It measures 9.75 x 6.375 inches and is 8 pages in length. Though 15,250 copies were printed, the extreme fragility of the wartime paper means that copies seldom appear. This copy is in near fine condition. The pamphlet remains crisp, clean, and complete, apart from the tiniest of chips to the upper left corner. Age-toning of the paper is minimal. We note no spotting and only minor wrinkling to the top edge. Both binding staples remain firmly intact, with some corrosion staining the adjacent paper.       England. (1940-1948). Two photograph albums containing relatively early British aviation transport photos. The first album is 8" x 10" green leather-grained cloth with gilt titles and art-nouveau stylized leaf motif. The second is 8.5" x 10" re-backed in brown leather over textured paper-covered boards with gilt titles. Very good or better. The albums contain over 300 photographs of shipping and civil aircraft subjects taken between 1940-1948 presumably presided over by a distinguished gentleman pictured in the uniform of a First Officer of the Air Transport Auxiliary. Most of the images are labeled with the names of the aircraft and locations, some with dates, and include images inside cockpits. Included are a small number of Fleet Air Arm images of aircraft at various locations through the United Kingdom and Europe; Channel Islands, Schiphol, and Lyons. Some photographs include scenes of North East Britain, such as the River Tyne and Spiller's Wharf. Of particular interest among the civil aviation archive are photographs of the Miles Aerovan operated by Air Contractors Ltd, which ran charter freight flights in the late 1940s. They were the first commercial company to transport a British car by air, a later Frazer-Nash car is shown in some photographs. There is also a photo of the company transporting a cow! Other companies featured include, Air Taxis Ltd, Air Charters, and Air Enterprises Ltd, the latter company's machine photographed with actor Basil Radford after the filming of Whisky Galore! in 1948. Also featured are photographs of ocean liners, warships, and cargo ships many named and labeled by city of destination, as well as a number of personal photographs. A fascinating archive of civil and naval aviation spanning the latter years of World War II and the early post-war periods, depicting the expanding development of transportation resources. .

      (NY): Virginia Stevens, 1940. First ed. of 250 copies. Strand, Paul. Folio, 4 pp., with 20 hand-pulled photogravure plates of varying size, from 5 x 6 1/4 to 8 x 10 1/2 inches, or the reverse, on loose sheets, 12 1/2 x 16 inches. The surface of each image is varnished, as issued. Each plate is numbered sequentially on the back reverse in green ink by Paul Strand. A bifolium text with print tiles and colophon is signed by the photographer and laid-in with the plates in a heavy paper folder, and inserted into a moderately soiled linen and card stock portfolio. The blank margins of several plates shows occasional faint foxing, as does the text pages. A very good copy. In the autumn of 1932, Paul Strand had separated from both his mentor, Alfred Stieglitz and his wife Rebecca. With the growing need to concentrate exclusively on his still photography, he contacted Carlos Chávez, then chief of the Department of Fine Arts in the secretariat of Education in Mexico, to help arrange an official invitation to work in Mexico. Strand claimed that he abandoned his usual working methods at the border. "I began to find that the shibboleths of time were not true for me. It was always said that you had to really know a place before start working in it, otherwise you would do something very superficial. Another shibboleth was that you can't make a portrait of a person unless you know that person.... these shibboleths went out the window." The photographs in the portfolio came from several trips to various Mexican states during the period of 1933-1934. The photographs he produced for this portfolio acted as a transition from his previous formalism in landscape and portraiture to a new social realism imbued with a fine art approach and technique. Sequencing played a major roll in the portfolio, the first image is Landscape, Near Saltillo, Mexico, 1932. It is a distant view of a white adobe structure seen through cactus and brush. The sequence moves from architectural studies of churches and vernacular buildings to the interior of the church and the religious statues, to the portraits of the unnamed people who inhabit these places. The Sequence moves back and forth, back and forth so that the viewer begins to understand the lives of these people. The actual production of the portfolio was first suggested by Lee Strasberg of the Group Theatre and published under the imprint of Virginia Stevens, Strand's second wife and an actress with the Group Theatre. Strand said of the portfolio "The thing that was original about this portfolio was that it was a conscious attempt to see if one could make reproductions which were so close to the originals - the originals being platinum prints - that they were good enough to be framed. That I think had not been done before. And I chose gravure as the one medium that I thought was possible to do that job." He added an element that further enhanced the tonal range of these prints by using a varnish on the finished print, an effect that gives a richness not seen in other photogravure prints. The images are 10 1/4 x 8 inches, and are extremely sharp and fine. Limited to 250 copies and SIGNED in ink by Strand beneath his statement in the text which follows a introduction by Leo Hurwitz.       New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition, later printing without the Scribners A on the copyright page. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "To Nicholas Wreden with all best wishes Ernest Hemingway." The recipient, Nicholas Wreden was an editorial director at E. P. Dutton, and noted translator of several Russian titles, among them Leo Tolstoy. Some toning to the spine, a very good example in an excellent dust jacketwith a few small closed tears. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of the author's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels of American literature… Hemingway has struck universal chords, and he has struck them vibrantly" (J. Donald Adams).

        A Speech by The Prime Minister The Right Honourable Winston Churchill in the House of Commons August 20th, 1940

      London: His Majesty's Stationary Office (H.M.S.O.), The Baynard Press, 1940. First edition. Pamphlet. This is a premium copy of the first edition of one of Churchill's most famous speeches. Churchill's speech to Parliament of August 20th, 1940 was occasioned by the Battle of Britain and famously honored the RAF pilots who almost single-handedly prevented Nazi invasion of England. Churchill encapsulated and immortalized the struggle when he uttered the words: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." The famous bibliographic reference Printing and the Mind of Man, which surveys the impact of the printed word on Western Civilization, singles out this edition of this speech. Printed deep red on light gray paper wraps and wire stitched, this speech pamphlet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is 16 pages in length. Prices of this edition have soared in recent years. Given the fragility of the edition, most copies understandably suffer from significant wear, soiling, tanning, and spotting. This copy is exceptional, in near fine condition. While worn and damaged copies are not especially rare, it has become quite difficult to find copies as well-preserved as this one. The gray covers are crisp, complete and firmly attached with no spotting, no losses, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. Both the gray paper wraps and the deep red print are manifestly brighter than typically seen, with no apparent age-toning. We note only a hint of slight creasing and insignificant soiling. There are no hinge splits. Both binding staples are firmly intact, marred only by a bit of surface corrosion so light that it has barely affected the adjacent paper. The contents are immaculately clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. (February 15, 1952), ?The Capital of the World? on ?Omnibus? (December 6, 1953), ?A Farewell to Arms? on ?Climax!? (May 26, 1955), ?The World of Nick Adams? on ?The Seven Lively Arts? (November 10, 1957), ?For Whom the Bell Tolls? on ?Playhouse 90? (March 12 & 19, 1959), and ?The Fifth Column? (February 29, 1960) and ?The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio? (May 19,1960) on the ?Buick Electra Playhouse.? He undoubtedly signed this autograph while at CBS either when a contract was signed or during the production of one of his works adapted for television."

Contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown. Endpapers lightly tanned, margins of text block lightly toned. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with minor fading to spine panel, slightly nicked and creased extremities, and a couple of minor chips to corners. First edition, first printing, with the Scribner's "A" to colophon, and in the first issue jacket without the photographer's credit.
