JÜDISCHES NACHRICHTENBLATT. ZIDOVSKE LISTY. ORGAN DER JÜDISCHEN KULTUSGEMEINDE IN PRAG UND DER ZIONISTISCHEN ORGANISATIONEN IN PRAG. VOL II, NRS 27-52 (JULY 5- DEC 27, 1940) . 25 ISSUES, UNINTERRUPTED RUN.

Prag, Jüdischen Kultusgemeinde In Prag 1940 - 1st edition. Folio. Newspaper. Illustrated throughout. Includes many advertisements and numerous personal family announcements. Following the Kristallnacht pogroms of November 1938, Jewish life in Germany and Czechoslovakia was even further curtailed and all remaining Jewish newspapers were shut down by the government. In their place, the Nazi Party ordered the creation of a single, new Jewish newspaper, "Das Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt, " that would be directly under Gestapo control. It was published concurrently in Berlin, Vienna and Prague and was occupied to a large extent with announcing the ever-increasing number of anti-Semitic discriminations, orders and exclusions imposed by the Reich government. Over the course of its history, the editors of the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt were Leo Kreindler (1938-42) and Willi Pless (1942-43) . The Berlin edition ran from the 23rd November, 1938 until the final issue of 4th June 1943. The Prague edition continued until 1945. In a ghoulish twist of Nazi irony, Gentiles were forbidden from reading the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt yet the newspaper's targeted readership, the Jews, were literally hounded to their deaths by the very authorities who presided over the newspaper's ownership! See Reiner Burger, Von Goebbels Gnaden: "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt" 1938-1943 (2001) . A mixed collection of 102 issues from Berlin and Prague sold at auction in 2015 for 9225.00 USD. Lacks outer binding, but original internal binding remains strong. Old damp staining to first and final leaves, other old staining and aging, but paper, text, and images are good. Good Condition overall. (kh-5-47) [Attributes: First Edition]

A COLLECTION OF EIGHTEEN LETTERS AND CARDS FROM VERA BRITTAIN TO DOROTHY PERKIN COVERING THE PERIOD 1940 TO 1967

1940 to 1967. Vera Brittain (1893-1970) was an influential British author, public speaker, and pacifist. She published several novels and three autobiographical books, the most important of which was "Testament of Youth" (published in 1935 and recently adapted for, and released as, a movie). Her intimate friendship with the English novelist and poet Winifred Holtby resulted in several books of their letters. We recently acquired, from the estate of a long-time acquaintance and correspondent of Ms. Brittain, a series of letters and hand-written cards. In format, they are either typed letter signed (TLS), or autographed (i.e., hand-written) letter signed [ALS]), or hand-written cards. They are all addressed to Dorothy Perkin and discuss many matters: some mundane (i.e., acknowledging correpsondence), or profound (e.g. TLS dated February 22, 1960, telling Ms. Perkins of her upcoming trip to Africa in response to an invitation from the University of Natal "to take part, as the main woman lecturer, in a conference they are holding in July to celebrate the Union of South Africa's Jubilee..." She continues: "It will be a wonderful opportunity to see things for myself and perhaps to try and emulate Harold Macmillan by making clear our attitude towards racial questions without offending my hosts. In this case, they can be subtly discussed in terms of the women who have gained their freedom, but were once in subjection". None of this material has previously been offered for sale, as it only recently came into our hands, from the estate. Further details upon request. .

        [Photo Album]: 1940s Snapshots Wisconsin

De Pere, Wisconsin / Michigan. 1940s. Quarto album. Measuring 11" x 9". A collection of 231 black and white or sepia toned photographs, some with hand tinting, affixed to stiff black paper measuring between 3.5" x 3.5" to 8" x 10" with captions. The album is very good minus, with detached pages, containing near fine or better photographs. A photo album compiled by Margie Lambent from De Pere, Wisconsin during the 1940s. Lambent spent her senior year of high school as a drum majorette for her high school's marching band, seen here in multiple photos in her uniform twirling a baton as well as one photo of her leading the band in a parade. From there the album depicts Lambent and her girlfriends posing in goofy snapshots with captions like "drunks" and "oh me oh my." The group vacationed in Michigan, going to Great Lake beaches and Iron Mountain ski jump. There are also a few hand tinted photos, one of a girl on a beach, and some from various formal dances they attended. One section shows a vacation to Lake of Lakes, Wisconsin with images of the girls goofing off, a man dressed in Native American dress, and a caption which read, "heap big Injun gal." Throughout the decade the group of girls was involved in numerous best friend activities, costume parties, vacations, as well as participating in weddings, and graduating school with photos of the women in their cap and gowns. An interesting look at the lives of young Mid-Western women during the 1940s. .

[Photographs]: Scenes of Alaska (1940s and 1950s)

Alaska. 1940-50s. A collection of 445 black and white photographs (and 97 negatives) of scenes in Alaska in the late 1940s and early 1950s measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" to 3.5" x 5" with occasional captions. Most of the photos are somewhat curled else near fine. An extensive group of photographs of life in Alaska taken by a University of Alaska, Fairbanks student depicting everything from polar bear cubs and mountains to Native Alaskan totem poles and snowy college activies. Some photos show the military highway which was completed in 1942 and helped connect Alaska to the rest of the United States via Canada and was first opened to the public in 1948. Included are photos from Allen's Lookout, which provided a beautiful stop for tourists on the road. A photo from 1950 shows a herd of buffalo and a caption from June of that year reads, "twin polar bear cubs about 10 weeks old that stopped here for honorary degrees in a publicity stunt en route to the outside." Inuit Alaskans are seen building snowmen, more recent Alaskans and Canadians engaged in hoisting cars onto ferries, and there are numerous images of other vehicles including trains and Sno-Cats. There are also numerous University of Alaska Fairbanks sporting events featured including 16 photos of hockey games and 26 photos from the 1950 Ice Bowl football game. The 2nd Annual Ice Bowl pitted the UAF Polar Bears against the Ladd Field Air Force Base Flyers in January of 1950. Headlines dubbed it "the Weirdest Bowl Game" while the university called it the "farthest north gridiron championship in the world." President Truman was invited although he did not attend. According to one reference, the rules stated "the throwing of snowballs was prohibited as a way of faking that the quarterback was passing the ball." Also included are various photographs of the landscape and the relatively new Alcan Highway, a 1700 mile road completed only a few years before in 1942. An extensive collection of images of the University of Alaska and its surrounding communities. An interesting look at the university life in Alaska. .

A Speech by The Prime Minister The Right Honourable Winston Churchill in the House of Commons August 20th, 1940

London: His Majesty's Stationary Office (H.M.S.O.), The Baynard Press, 1940. First edition. Pamphlet. This is a premium copy of the first edition of one of Churchill's most famous speeches. Churchill's speech to Parliament of August 20th, 1940 was occasioned by the Battle of Britain and famously honored the RAF pilots who almost single-handedly prevented Nazi invasion of England. Churchill encapsulated and immortalized the struggle when he uttered the words: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." The famous bibliographic reference Printing and the Mind of Man, which surveys the impact of the printed word on Western Civilization, singles out this edition of this speech. Printed deep red on light gray paper wraps and wire stitched, this speech pamphlet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is 16 pages in length. Prices of this edition have soared in recent years. Given the fragility of the edition, most copies understandably suffer from significant wear, soiling, tanning, and spotting. This copy is exceptional, in near fine condition. While worn and damaged copies are not especially rare, it has become quite difficult to find copies as well-preserved as this one. The gray covers are crisp, complete and firmly attached with no spotting, no losses, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. Both the gray paper wraps and the deep red print are manifestly brighter than typically seen, with no apparent age-toning. We note only a hint of slight creasing and insignificant soiling. There are no hinge splits. Both binding staples are firmly intact, marred only by a bit of surface corrosion so light that it has barely affected the adjacent paper. The contents are immaculately clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve.         A COLLECTION OF 18 LETTERS AND HAND-WRITTEN CARDS FROM VERA BRITTAIN TO AN ADMIRER

We offer for sale this collection of 18 letters and hand-written cards, which span the years 1940 to 1967 and contain many interesting comments and observations, not only about Ms Brittain's writing, philosophy, and her relationship with Winifred Holtby, but also of a personal and family nature. All of the correspondence is addressed to Dorothy Perkin, a friend and admirer of Vera Brittain. Throughout the comments below Vera Brittain is referred to as "VB", and Dorothy Perkin as "DP". "ALS" means "autograph letter signed, i.e., the letter is entirely in the author's hand. "TLS" means "typed letter signed", i.e. a typed letter, signed by the author.1) Hand-written card measuring 9 x 11 cm dated 30/4/40 from Lyndhurst, Hants., to DP thanking her for sending an admiring letter about "Testament of Friendship", and remarking that "through it you have learnt still more about Winifred Holtby's beautiful life and work". Signed "Vera Brittain". 2) Folded ALS, dated Feb. 20, 1941, from 43 Atheneum Court, London W. 1, 22 lines in pen, written on both sides, and signed "Vera Brittain", addressed to "Dear Miss Perkins". It begins: "Thank you very much for writing me such a kind letter about my books. I am glad that they mean something to you in this world of crises and catastrophes. You certainly have known little else in your short life. I am often glad that I am just old enough to remember the pre-1914 period in which I was at school [Brittain was 42 when she wrote this]". VB then goes on to discuss her pacifist views and hopes for peace. 3) Folded TLS, dated 19th November, 1941, in stamped envelope, addressed from 67 Richmond Hill Court, Richmond, 20 lines, signed by VB, addressed to "Dear Miss Perkin". First paragraph thanks DP for two letters and regrets not having had a chance to speak to her at Youth Forum. Second paragraph explains why she will not be traveling in the near future due to the pressures of her work. 4) Folded typed letter, dated 20th November, 1942, headed "Vera Brittain's Letter", and from 67 Richmond Hill Court, Richmond, 32 lines, signed by secretary "p.p. Vera Brittain", addressed to "Dear Miss Perkin". First paragraph acknowledges and comments upon DP's letter about VB's book "Humiliation with Honour". Second paragraph discusses the teaching of history, closing with the comment "If people could learn history from a really wide and truthful perspective, it would be one of the most valuable ways of preventing wars. This is why I insist so much upon this in my book". Third paragraph contains interesting observations on pacifism. 5) Folded TLS, dated 12th January, 1943, addressed from 67 Richmond Hill Court, Richmond, 24 lines, signed by VB, addressed to "Dear Miss Perkin". First paragraph acknowledges and comments upon DP's letter asking about "the religious attitude in my Letters". Much longer second paragraph sets out an explanation of how religion affects pacifism and war, and vice-versa. 6) Hand-written postcard measuring 9 x 11 cm, dated 21/VI/43, from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, S.W. 3, addressed on stamped side to DP, thanking DP for the page from "The Accountant" which VB indicates will be included in her anthology. 7) Hand-written postcard measuring 9 x 14 cm dated 3/VI/43 from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, addressed on stamped side to DP, acknowledging receipt of letter and cheque "for Kingsley Hall". VB tells DP that "I am opening a meeting with Patrick Figgis to-night & shall give it to him then". There are a few concluding remarks. 8) Folded ALS, dated Dec. 15th, 1943, in stamped envelope, addressed from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, 31 lines, signed by VB, addressed to "Dear Miss Perkin". VB acknowledges further DP contributions to her Anthology, particularly those referencing Sweden and Czechoslovakia. Second paragraph talks about the difficulty of sorting through these contributions. Third paragraph is more personal: VB speaks of her children, and of "trimming a Christmas tree for the first time since 1939". Last paragraph mentions VB's greeting card with "three recently written sonnets of mine". 9) Folded ALS, dated 9.10 43., in stamped envelope, addressed from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, 26 lines, signed by VB, addressed to "Dear Miss Perkin". Again, VB acknowledges receipt of contributions to Anthology, and discusses her progress in first two paragraphs. In last paragraph VB comments "If only it can mitigate the growing indictment of each nation against the other, and contribute even a beam of light to the atmosphere of peace-making, it will have done its job." 10) Hand-written postcard measuring 9 x 14 cm dated 9/VIII/43 from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, addressed on stamped side to DP, acknowledging receipt of Anthology contribution and commenting on "comfortably placed officials advocating hardships for others wh. [when] they wd [would] never dream of enduring themselves." 11) Hand-written card measuring 9 x 14 cm dated 29/2/44 from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, addressed on stamped side to DP, acknowledging further contributions. In the second paragraph VB comments: "The raids [air raids] have meant domestic chars [i.e. cleaning ladies] for me, as thanks to them I have lost members of my staff and my son is at the bomber school in the London area which was rather a shock." Signed "Yours VB". 12) Hand-written card measuring 9 x 14 cm dated 19/7/45 from 2 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, addressed on stamped side to DP, acknowledging DP's letter about "the Birmingham meeting". In the second paragraph she discusses the Potsdam conference. 13) Folded TLS, dated 14th April, 1943, in stamped envelope, addressed from 4, Whitten Court, Westminster, S.W. 1, 16 lines, signed VB, addressed to Dear Mrs. Perkin [sic - Dorothy Perkin never married]. VB comments in the first paragraph about DP's observation that VB's daughter was standing as socialist candidate for Harwich [born Shirley Caitlin, later the Baroness Williams of Crosby, socialist politician and academic]. "It is quite a minor triumph in its way, since she is only 22, and I do not think that a girl of that age has ever been selected before." In the second paragraph, VB comments on the work in progress (i.e. "Testament of Experience"). 14) Hand-written card measuring 9 x 14 cm, dated 8.10.58, from 4 Whitehall Court, S.W. 1, contained in stamped envelope addressed to DP The card is in VB's handwriting, written on both sides (25 lines). VB apologizes for the brief reply explaining she is in the midst of packing for a six month visit to North America, and suggests to DP that she read her most recently published book "Testament of Experience": "I think it might interest you as it continues the story told in the two other Testaments". She continues with comments about Winifred's Holtby's "dust-cover introduction" to "Testament of Youth". Continuing, she relates about her daughter's election win and present activities. Finally, she reveals to DP that she is planning "to publish a new volume of Winfred Holtby's letters - her letters to me - in 1960, when it will be 25 years after her death." The card is signed VB. 15) Folded TLS, dated 16th June, 1959, in stamped envelope, addressed from 4, Whitehall Court, Westminster, S.W. 1, 32 lines, signed VB, addressed to Dear Miss Perkin. The letter brings DP up to date after VB's return from her North American trip, and responds to DP's comments about reading "Testament of Experience". The third paragraph comments on Holtby's "reaction to the prefatory letter in 'South Riding' [Holtby's major work]. The lengthier fourth paragraph contains comments on VB's plan to publish the following year the book of letters, as well as her next book "The Women at Oxford". The fifth paragraph talks about a paperback edition of "Testament of Youth". The last paragraph talks briefly about her recent trip and her visits to Vancouver and Victoria, B.C. 16) Folded TLS, dated February 22nd, 1960, in stamped envelope, addressed from 4, Whitehall Court, Westminster, S.W. 1, 23 lines, signed VB, addressed to Dear Miss Perkin. The first paragraph comments about the recent release of her new book, "The Women at Oxford" and the press reviews of it. The second paragraph refers to the brochure for VB's next book, "Selected Letters of Winifred Holtby and Vera Brittain" and refers to the enclosed brochure for the book [which is present]. The last paragraph gives an account of VB's upcoming trip to Africa where she has been invited by the University of Natal "to take part, as the main woman lecturer, in a conference they are holding in July to celebrate the Union of South Africa's Jubilee..." She continues: "It will be a wonderful opportunity to see things for myself and perhaps try to emulate Harold Macmillan by making clear our attitude towards racial questions without offending my hosts. In this case, they can be subtly discussed in terms of the women who have gained their freedom, but were once in subjection." 17) Folded TLS, dated 9th December, 1960, in stamped envelope, addressed from 4, Whitehall Court, Westminster, S.W. 1, 15 lines, signed VB, addressed to Dear Miss Perkin. This letters mainly discusses VB's newest book "Selected Letters of Winifred Holtby and Vera Brittain". 18) Folded TLS, dated 17th January, 1967, in stamped envelope, addressed from 4, Whitehall Court, Westminster, S.W. 1, 9 lines, signed VB, addressed to Dear Dorothy Perkin.         Another Time. Poems.

New York: Random House,, 1940. Octavo. Original orange cloth, device to front board and titles to spine gilt. Spine rolled, an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine, small chip to head of front panel and some nicks to extremities. First edition, first printing. This copy is annotated by Auden at the foot of each poem, noting the place and date of its composition, and is from the library of Caroline Newton, with her bookplate to the front pastedown. Caroline Newton (1893-1975), a rich psychiatrist, met Auden in the spring of 1940, appointing herself "a kind of patroness to him"; she quickly became infatuated, giving him gifts of money and expensive presents. This was a not infrequent occurrence for Auden, who "'had an amazing effect on women'" - particularly wealthy ladies, which his friends regarded with much amusement. In return for Newton's largesse, Auden would present her with original manuscripts. Auden seems to have found the relationship tiresome, and maintained the flirtation for largely financial reasons, possibly motivated by the burdensome expense of supporting Chester Kallman. Newton became the butt of jokes by Auden and his friends, who privately nicknamed her the "dog-lady" due to her love for the animal; in his letter of 30 July 1942, he writes of Newton that "ladies who were meant to be unselfish maiden-aunts should not read Freud". Their friendship was over by 20 December 1944, terminated by Auden before a poetry reading which she had organised; she was later referenced as the "huge sad lady" in his poem The Duet (1947). Laid-in is a torn slip of Newton's headed paper, with the address of her home, The Maypole in Berwyn. Auden was often invited there, and his 1942 poem, In War-Time, was written for her house-warming.
