The Story of My Experiments With Truth.

Navijivan, 1940 Ahmedabad: Navijivan, 1940. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Second edition in English of Gandhi’s autobiography, in original “khadi” cloth and uncut. Mohandas (“Mahatma”) Gandhi’s concept of Satyagraha, active nonviolent resistance, led India to independence from Great Britain and inspired millions, including leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Desmond Tutu. “Gandhi’s nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth in devotion to God and attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices, celibacy and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps” (Brian Bruya). Gandhi offers an invaluable “account of the shaping of a new path to collective resistance to injustice” (Sissela Bok). Translated from Gujarati by Mahadev Desai. along with Pyarelal Nair. In the original “khadi” cloth, a homespun linen that Gandhi adopted as a symbol of Indian struggle against the British. Serialized in Gujarati in the weekly magazine Navjivan, 1925-28. (In 1929 Gandhi published a second volume of his autobiography. That book is not included here.) Very good condition, with spine much less faded than usual; at half title page paper to previous one is separating.. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

EXCITEMENT IN ENTERTAINMENT: Columbia's Theme Song for 1940-1941

[Hollywood] / (New York): [Columbia Pictures] / (Polygraphic Company of America), [ca. 1940]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 18.5” x 12.25” approx. Metallic gold paper covered boards with titles printed in red and blue. Rubbing to boards. Some light wear at spine ends. Interior bright and sharp. In original brown card mailer, worn at edges with moderate damp-staining (not effecting book) at one end. 50pp. Very good overall. Lavish promotional book of full-bleed and -color lithographed illustrations advertising upcoming programs for Columbia Pictures' 1940-1941 season. Likely distributed to theater owners and clearly produced well in advance of actual production, the book contains a disclaimer stating that properties may not be produced precisely as advertised. And indeed, most of the films advertised did not make it into theaters, or did so with different stars or under different titles. Of the films included, 11 appear to be completely unrealized, with most of the remaining either produced under different titles, with different principals, or both. Most of the pictures rely heavily on Columbia's roster of contract players: Cary Grant, Loretta Young, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Arthur, etc. Star directors like Charles Vidor also feature prominently. While many of the pictures seem well on their way to production — with directors, writers and stars attached — some seem to be little more than ideas, such as “Canal Zone” or “I Joined the Bund,” with generic titles evoking timely topics. In addition, a handful of CBS radio plays are advertised as well, including Ellery Queen and Blondie. An uncommon look into film marketing and production at the height of the studio era. Only two holdings in OCLC; especially rare with original mailer.

        Why England Slept.

Wilfred Funk, Inc, New York 1940 - First edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in a contemporary hand, "For Asa Bordages with best wishes Jack Kennedy." The recipient, Asa Bordages was a feature writer for the New York World-Telegram and playwright known for the 1941 play Brooklyn USA. Lightest of rubbing, near fine in a very good dust jacket with some small chips and wear to the extremities. Published the year Kennedy graduated from Harvard, Why England Slept was an expansion of his senior thesis. The title is a variation on the title of Winston Churchill's work, While England Slept, published about two years before Kennedy's. It was dedicated to John's parents, Rose and Joe Kennedy. In this work he attempts to explain why England was so poorly prepared for World War II and why England's leaders settled upon the disastrous policies of appeasement. The book served as a warning to those in our country who felt that appeasing Hitler and staying out of the war was a viable option. It became a bestseller in the United States and went through several printings in its first year. (Newcomb, 10) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Tracking Down Metals . Metallurgical Engineer

Red Bank, N[ew]. J[ersey]: Privately printed. [c. 1940s] - Government-letter (267 × 203 mm), title leaf with typed label, ll.30, [2], leaves typed rectos only, two reproductions of photographs affixed to final leaf, 9 gelatin silver photographs (253 × 203 mm) 8 with typed captions to verso, 1 which was used for reproduction has been some light contemporary re-touching and handwritten captions to recto, annotations and remnants of a newspaper clipping to verso. Screw-bound into card covers with typed title label. Contents lightly browned, occasional light wear to surfaces and edges, covers lightly worn. Very good. A typescript report on three cases on which Stanley R. Keith, a renowned and respected metallurgist, worked. Keith begins by describing how with studied attention metal objects can give up answers as to their history. ‘Anyone can make a bar of pure tin cry mechanically, by bending it at the middle till the ends meet. If the doubled-up midsection is held to the ear, it may be distinctly heard to whine in a subdued chorus of wails and squeaks for some time thereafter. Under equally simple though little suspected physical circumstances, many metallic objects may “sing” when found intimately associated with some singular event. Where such roles might serve to identify or apprehend elusive criminals, the investigation of these objects becomes a metallurgical game well worth the candle’. The three cases in reverse order are are the 1935 trial of Richard Hauptmann who was convicted of the Charles Lindbergh Jr. kidnapping. It was this case that established Keith’s reputation as he matched nails from the ladder used in the kidnapping with others used and in possession by Hauptmann. Keith also provided evidence in the 1940 trial of Thomas J. McCarthy, alias ‘Scratch’, described in the text as ‘the world’s most accomplished forger’, who was caught with steel washers which were used fraudulently in subway and telephone boxes, these washers linked him to an accomplice in a lucrative securities scam. The third case is that of the ‘Good Friday’ mail bombing campaign which claimed the lives of three people in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1936. According to this report it was Keith who achieved the breakthrough in the ‘Good Friday’ case which led police to the perpetrator. The bombs were sent in wooden cigar boxes with the original panel pins replaced by small shoe nails. The required explosives expertise led the police to focus their attention on the mining industry, and in time to three specific miners, however they were unable to link any of these men to the crime. Keith was initially brought in to examine the copper wiring that had been used in the construction of the devices, however, he soon shifted his attention to the nails used to secure the box lids. This led him to request that the police requisition pairs of work boots belonging to the three suspects, whereby Keith matched the nails used in the construction of the bombs to those used by one of the men, a disgruntled miner named Michael Fugmann. Fugmann was arrested, tried, and convicted for the bombing campaign and was sent to the electric chair. Interestingly, during the trial a special stereoscopic viewer was provided so that the jurors could look at three-dimensional enlargements of the tiny nails, as a binocular microscope was deemed impractical. Four of the original photographs that are included in this report show the unexploded bombs that were intercepted in the mail, or in one case failed to detonate. There are then four photographs taken by a State Trooper of the grisly aftermath at two scenes at which bombs did detonate, killing three people. The final photograph shows three nails, one from Fugmann’s shoe and two from the bombs. An apparently unpublished, and presumably unique, noirish account of a pioneering case where photography played an important part in the trial. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

New York: Random House, 1940. First Edition. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED THUS ON FEP: "To Marguerite Dunsmore - /The friendly antagonist - in hopes / of more such intriguing duels / Cordially / Walter V. T. Clark / December 14, 1940. TOGETHER WITH CARBON TYPSCRIPT, ONE PAGE, SIGNED, WRITTEN TO MS. DUNSMORE: "Addressed to a Counter-blade / Let us cease this fencing of intellects / This sharp following behind masks / Of the bright points moving, this parry and thrust / Of the cold metal ringing, the guard against guard to a spark, / Seeking only a tip-tear in a heart sewed on white silk. / Let us throw down the limber blades, the screens of our faces, / Into the roses tossed early for the quick-legged dance of our brains, / Rub off the powder of our hands and join them tightly, / Looking upon each other once clearly uncovered. / Are we to dread the dark fools up in the gallery shadow / Crying the 'coward' chorus, until they weary, and bundle the stairs / in overcoats? / When they are gone we will sing unbottoned blades / With our half-bodies naked in the white light / For the flower streams of our sweet blood running, / Until it may be we will kill each other beautifully." Signed, "Walter." The source of the 1943 classic film, starring Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn. A very good copy with light soiling to the cloth binding; dust jacket with light wear to extremities - small loss at spine head.

        Digby Morton skirt suit.

Approx. UK size 8. Jacket in black wool with velvet collar and rayon lining with wide lapels and label 'Designed by Digby Morton/Made by Jacqmar/ 16 Grosvenor St., London W1, with matching black wool skirt with zip to left side and label 'Digby Morton/ Grosvenor Hill/ London W1' and matching black leather-backed belt; very good condition. This New Look-style skirt suit is too extravagant, with its wide folding lapels that give the illusion of a jacket front opening over a waistcoat, to have been part of the Utility Wear scheme and must have been worth a large number of clothing coupons. Yet it would have seemed worth the expense; Digby Morton (1906-1983) was one of the top London couturiers of the time. His aim was 'to transform the suit from the strict tailleur, or the ordinary country tweed fit only for the moors, into an intricately cut and carefully designed garment, so fashionable that it could be worn with confidence at the Ritz.' (DNB). He was also closely involved in the war effort, being one of the Board of Trade's approved designers for the Utility Wear scheme and the creator of the WVS uniform. This is an unusual collaboration with Jacqmar, the fashion house celebrated for its headscarves, and is a rare piece of 1940s fashion.

An intriguingly complex book production of anti-English Nazi propaganda documenting the growth of the British Empire with overlay maps and an explanatory booklet with a caricature of the spider Churchill by Bruno Böttiger on the front cover. Despite the political stance of this publication the typographical design of the colophon on the rear cover is unadulterated Bauhaus.

White Collar: A Novel in Linocuts

San Francisco, CA: Pisani Printing & Publishing Co., [c.1940]. [Second edition]. Paperback. Very good. Quarto [27 cm]; stiff black card wrappers with title printed in white on backstrip, and illustration printed in white on front panel. A small amount of creasing and bumping to edges and corners, hinges are a little weak, otherwise a lovely copy. A classic from the Great Depression much in the style of early Lynd Ward or Franz Masereel. First published privately just prior to World War II, White Collar has remained a biting critique of the powers that be, and at the same time championing the working class. This book is uncommon in any condition or edition. "White Collar was to be my contribution to, what I believed then, an indispensable understanding of the necessity of unity among all American workers and voters. I was not a writer, so illustrations in sequence were, I thought, the answer. I had a printing press and lots of linoleum to use for linoleum cuts, so I set to work the idea of doing the entire job myself. I was young, naive and in a hurry, but I soon discovered that a book, a story, an ideal, each is a slow process, even with some help from the family. It took several years to engrave, print, bind and distribute a boom that was seen by a very few people who did not need convincing." - Giacomo Patri - June,1975.

Der Jüngling. Folge von |5 Original-Zeichnungen|.

Um 1940. - 44x31 cm. (Siehe Museums-Katalog No.1, Ausstellung 'Sodom Berlin', 1998. S. 44f.) Vgl. Hergemöller 356. --------------- Hildebrand, Ernst. Der Jüngling [Le jeune homme]. Série des 5 dessins originaux. Vers 1940. 44x31 cm. ---------------------- Hildebrand, Ernst. Five Original Gay Erotic Watercolor and Pen and Ink drawings. NP, ND. Ca. 1940. Original artwork. Portfolio. 5 loose plates, each protected with tissue-guard. Original full cloth with gold littering on title-label. Unique art work from the most famous German gay erotic artist, consisting of five original drawings depicting groups of naked men engaged in sexual intercourse or in erotic postures. One drawing depicting a S&M scene. Four of these illustrations are pen and ink drawings with a touch of watercolor, and one is mostly watercolor with outlines in pen and ink.
