Negro anthology.- First edition, signed by Nancy Cunard, dedicated to the Cuban poet and communist activist Nicolas Guillen.

Londres, Nancy Cunard at Wishart & co, 15 février 1934 - 31,5 x 25,5 cm, 855 p., 385 ill. Original binding, publisher's black cloth, typographic title and Black Belt map printed in red. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies (a significant number of which were destroyed during the London Blitz. Autograph dedication signed by Nancy Cunard (1902- 1989). A poet, editor, activist, journalist, anti-conformist, Nancy Cunard (1896-1965) is closely linked to the 20th century avant-guarde movements, notably the Surrealists. In 1928,in the wake of her relationship with Aragon, Nancy Cunard shares her life with the African American pianist Henry Crowder, who raises her awareness to the black cause. The trauma of her mother, Lady Cunard's insulting racism is certainly a catalyst in Nancy's antiracist and anticolonialist commitments. From 1931 to 1934, through her writings, her contacts, her travels, she gathers the materials and drafts her manifesto project. The 155 contributors to the Negro Anthology (250 articles) are activists, journalists, artists, academics, African Americans, West Indians, Latin Americans, Americans, Europeans, among which Alain Locke, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Th. Dreiser, Louis Armstrong, Ezra Pound, William Carlos William, G. Antheil, J. Banting, K. Macpherson N. Guillen, J. Roumain, Samuel Beckett (translator of the French Surrealists' contributions), R. Crevel, B. Péret, G. Sadoul, L.P. Quint, G. Michelet, G. Padmore, etc. An encyclopaedic literary, artistic and musical anthology as well as a wide documentary survey, Negro is the first overview which mixes popular culture, sociology, politics, history, art history, and includes articles, archives, press excerpts, music scores, testimonies. In a very modern editorial choice, which superimposes unpublished texts, compilations, raw documents and a very rich and extensive commented photographic iconography, the book is divided into seven geographic and thematic sections: America, Negro stars, Music (America, creole, West Indies, Africa), Poetry (by Negro poets, West Indian poetry, Poetry by white poets on negro themes), West Indies and South America (Jamaica, Haïti, Cuba, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, British Guiana, Brazil Uruguay), Europe, Africa. The work pertains to the aesthetics of African cultures with an important chapter "Negro sculpture and Ethnology" (90 photographs,12 plates: great museums and private collections (P.Guillaume, F.Fénéon, Ch. Ratton, Moffat) but its main motive lies on the denunciation of the hypocrisy and racist violence of Western and colonial societies. The origin of our copy is highly symbolic. The dedicacee,Cuban poet and communist activist Nicolas Guillen (1902-1989) unveiled the African heart of Havana to Nancy Cunard in July 1932 during her exploratory mission. Her poems, translated in English by Langston Hughes are part of Negro. But Guillen also shares with Nancy Cunard his commitment with the Spanish Republicans. She publishes her poems in "The poets of the world defend the Spanish people" (n°6, 1938). The date of the dedicace (August 1937) coincides with the arrival of Guillen in Paris in order to participate in the second International Congress of writers for the defence of culture. Attesting to the transnational and manifold antiracist and anticolonialist fights of the thirties, does not reduce Negro Anthology to a mere outdated atlas of negro suffering or to an archeology of negritude. The abolition of racial prejudice is still a current issue. The lesson in tolerance, the scope of Nancy Cunard's manifesto are intact, and so is its urgency. A pioneer in its committed conception, the originality and scope of the collected contributions, and in its great formal modernity, Negro Anthology is one of the exceptional and emblematic books of the 20th century and its cultural revolutions. Here, the recognition and importance of African culture appear for the first time in all their aspects. Beautiful copy, with an established origin, whose rarity and q [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Charles Keene. The Artists' Artist

London: Published by P. & D. Colnaghi, for the Author. 1934. Lionel Lindsay, the famous Australian artist and critic, greatly admired Keene, the illustrator and humorous artist best known for his drawings for Punch. Tipped-in are two autograph letters from Lionel Lindsay to the Australian collector Harry Chaplin. Tipped-in also is an undated autograph letter by Keene himself with a sketch and a fragment of another autograph piece. First edition, and very scarce: only 130 copies were printed, all numbered and signed by the author. Folio, original quarter cloth, frontispiece portrait and 55 fine collotype plates, each with tissue guard. Pp. 1934 (see footnote), printed mainly in black letter, double column, with pp. 1042-4 in greek, 1 folding woodcut insert (of Windsor Castle), pictorial title page to Volume II, and approximately 140 text illustrations, plus decorative head & tailpieces and initials, cr. folio; early vellum boards, slightly soiled and worn, rebacked by Harry Green of Melbourne in twentieth century maroon morocco, the spine with six raised bands and gilt lettered black leather title label, the boards with matching maroon leather corners; later endpapers and binder's blank, with newscutting (reproducing the title page of John Bunyan's 1662 copy of Foxe's book) and photograph (of same) taped to the upper pastedown, bookplate on upper free endpaper, a few paper repairs (notably reinforcing fore-edges of first few leaves, and occasionally elsewhere), 32 lines of the text on p. 1854 replaced with a handwritten version laid on, in a very neat early hand, with a few light water stains, a couple of small ink stains and early marginalia, a few edge chips or small tears, very occasional minor loss of text from creasing (p. 267), small hole (pp. 397/8), or slight surface grazes (p. 597), scattered light foxing, browning and soiling; printed by Peter Short, by the assigne of R. Day, London, [1596]. Fifth edition. STC 11226. *The first edition of this famous book printed after the death of the author. Originally published in latin in 1559, the \i Book of Martyrs was an immediate best seller, and its influence was profound. In 1571 Convocation decreed that copies were to be placed in all cathedral churches and that the houses of archbishops, bishops, archdeacons and canons should all have copies. 'The lively style of the book, not to mention the gruesome illustrations, which first appeared in the English edition of 1563, was thus given an opportunity to influence - and prejudice -the minds of people of all classes of society, including those who could not otherwise have afforded it.' [\i Printing and the Mind of Man , 86]. This copy lacks all the preliminary leaves (the main title page, dedicatory epistles, etc.), the last few pages of text (1935-1949), the index, and two of the three woodcut inserts. Complete copies of early editions are rare, and even with the defects described above, this is a relatively complete and generally clean copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kamerny teatr i ego khudozhniki, 1914-1934 [The Kamerny Theatre and Its Artists, 1914-1934]

Izd. Vseros. teatral nogo obshchestva, Moscow 1934 - A celebration of Alexander Tairov's pathbreaking Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, featuring set and costume designs as well as scenes from the theatre's first 20 years. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white, the book showcases each production of the Kamerny, founded by Alexander Tairov (1885-1950 ) and his wife, the actress Alisa Koonen (1889-1974).Tairov brought many non-Russian productions to the Kamerny, including works by Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Eugene O'Neill, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde. Tairov's productions were known for their magnificent set and costume designs, and he collaborated with some of the most acclaimed avant-garde artists of the day, including Alexandra Exter and Natalia Goncharova. Indeed, it's possible to see the evolution of 20th-century Russian art through the set and costume designs, which reflected Cubist, Constructivist, Rayonist, and even Art Deco influences. It was an exciting time in Soviet theatre; this era featured some of the greatest directors of the 20th century, such as Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, and Vakhtangov. The Kamerny was the scene of one of the most significant plays of the Soviet theatre, according to Nick Worrall in his authoritative study, "Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage" (Cambridge University Press, 1989). Vsevolod Vishnevsky's Russian civil-war play, Optimistic Tragedy, opened at the Kamerny on December 18, 1933. "It concerns particular historical events associated with the civil war in the Soviet Union but, more generally, it is an article of faith -- in the triumph of Life over Death, of the Collective over the Individual, of faith in the necessary tragedy of revolution, of the necessary destruction of those who oppose revolution, of hostility to the spirit of anarchism, and faith in the leadership of the party." Indeed, the play, which is featured in this book, marked an important milestone in the development of "socialist realism."The Soviet government closed the Kamerny Theatre in 1949, and Tairov died a year later. The Kamerny's home at 23 Tverskoy Boulevard is now occupied by the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre.4to (12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches / 307 x 220 mm), xlvii [1],1-195 (plates), [3], 199-211 (appendix), [1] pages, in publisher's original brown cloth, lacking the rare dust jacket. In Russian. Blindstamp to front board, both boards rubbed, small scrape to rear paste down. Tissue guards separating each play, plate 36 unpublished, according to list of illustrations in the appendix, plate 41 loose, some small closed tears in a few pages, plate 175 improperly trimmed, not affecting the illustration. Overall, Very Good or better. A stunning look at the first 20 years of the Kamerny Theatre, one of the most innovative theatres at an important moment in Soviet theatre history. SCARCE. Contains 147 black and white or sepia toned silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3" x 5", with captions. Very good album with chips, tears, and spotting on the front board with very good photographs with some edgewear.A photo album kept by the Chiodi family of Baltimore between 1934 and 1946. The photographs are not strictly in chronological order but show the family working, at their family home, and on vacation through the mid-1930s and early 1940s. The album begins with a trip to Jamestown, North Dakota, where they had lived before relocating to Baltimore, with photos of family friends on their front porch, children in their Sunday best, and workers on the Northern Pacific Railroad. Following this there are photos of a sheep ranch, a farm in Edmond, North Dakota, and Jamestown State Hospital. Friends and family are seen throughout the album in a variety of portraits, candids, and photo strips. They visited upstate New York and Niagara Falls, went camping and hiking, and enjoyed leisurely boating. As the war began the photos start showing more men in uniform including a Navy seaman and a man, Ernest Chiodi, in an Army uniform who is later mentioned in a newspaper clipping as dying in Germany in 1944. "A member of Company I 395th Infantry, 99th Division, 'Ernie' proved himself one of the highest caliber servicemen."A nice collection of family photos including travel and war related images. .

Above all, he demonstrated how the remarkable book Thus Spake Zarathustra illustrates both Nietzsche's genius and his neurotic and prepsychotic tendencies.EDITION:The first three volumes offered here are clearly first editions - which come with different pagination than the second multilith printing. The first three volumes of the second edition printing were considerably shorter than this original edition - reducing their 175, 209 & 168 pages to 128, 153 & 120 pages respectively. This shortening was done by retyping the text in a single-spaced rather than a double-spaced format. In volumes 7 & 9 someone has written in pencil above the date on the title pages: "1st Edition." PROVENANCE: Six of these eleven volumes (1, 2, 3, 5, 8 & 10) have the signature of "Elizabeth G. Whitney" and her San Francisco address written on the front fly leaf in black ink. Volume 7 has the bookplate of Alice Eckstein affixed to the inside of the front cover. Volume 11 has the address label for Elisabeth de Neufville Lehmann to the center of the front fly leaf. PRINT RUNS:The Beinecke Library holds original invoices for the printing of most of these volumes - along with other document which mention the length of the print run. From these documents, the following can be reconstructed regarding quantities and dates: Part 1: 100 copies printedPart 2: 100 copies printed [March 26, 1935]Part 3: 100 copies printed [July 1, 1935]Part 4: 105 copies printed [November 12, 1935]Part 5: 105 copies printed [February 29, 1936]Part 6: 120 copies printed [May, 1936]Part 7: 120 copies printed [August 18, 1936]Part 8: 150 copies printed [November 1937]Part 9: 150 copies printed [October 13, 1938]Part 10: 150 copies printed [May 11, 1939]Index: 110 copies printed [1942] Each multigraphed volume has single-sided pages and is bound with three large staples. The boards are dark grey green and the spines are covered with black canvas tape with gilt lettering (except for Volume 1 which has recently renewed and unlettered black canvas tape and Volume 2 which has been retaped with the original spine laid down). Otherwise, all eleven of these volumes are in remarkable shape considering their age and use. A very pretty set of this rare printing of one of Jung's most important seminars.         Typed letter signed to noted American band composer and leader Edwin Franko Goldman

1/2 page, single-spaced. Large octavo, 266 x 184 mm. Dated Brookline, Massachusetts, January 31, 1934. With Schoenberg's name and address handstamped to upper left corner. In English. Schoenberg comments about a commissioned translation, by Goldman, of a text he had originally written in German. He is not quite satisfied with Goldman's work and requests a new translation: "Dear Mr. Goldman, you find enclosed the translation you have send [!] me with your letter of January 29th. There you find also some marginal notes where I have signed some of the parts of the translation, by which I cannot be satisfied... I understand your intention in translating my words and I can well appreciate it. Surely it would be of a great advantage if all I have written could be said in such a manner that everybody can conceive it. But surely also: The thought would loose [!] so much of its dep[th] and of its prospect, that I am forced to renounce another succes[s] of my word, than an [in?]adequate-one..." Manuscript annotation to upper right corner in an unknown hand (?Goldman's): "Ans." [?Answer]. Slightly browned and stained; creased at folds; minor remnants of archival mounting tape to blank verso. Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was a band composer and bandleader living in New York. The letter inadvertently testifies to the newly-immigrated Schoenberg's struggle with the English language, but also to his uncompromising nature. In the end, Goldman decided to publish Schoenberg's article in German. See Schoenberg's letter to Goldman of February 3, 1934 published in Arnold Schoenberg: Sämtliche Werke Section IV: Orchestral Works. Series B, Volume 13 edited by Rudolf Stephan, p. xxiii.

Kamerny teatr i ego khudozhniki, 1914-1934 [The Kamerny Theatre and Its Artists, 1914-1934]

Moscow: Izd. Vseros. teatral nogo obshchestva, 1934. First Edition. A celebration of Alexander Tairov's pathbreaking Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, featuring set and costume designs as well as scenes from the theatre's first 20 years. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white, the book showcases each production of the Kamerny, founded by Alexander Tairov (1885-1950 ) and his wife, the actress Alisa Koonen (1889-1974). Tairov brought many non-Russian productions to the Kamerny, including works by Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Eugene O'Neill, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde. "It concerns particular historical events associated with the civil war in the Soviet Union but, more generally, it is an article of faith -- in the triumph of Life over Death, of the Collective over the Individual, of faith in the necessary tragedy of revolution, of the necessary destruction of those who oppose revolution, of hostility to the spirit of anarchism, and faith in the leadership of the party." Indeed, the play, which is featured in this book, marked an important milestone in the development of "socialist realism." The Soviet government closed the Kamerny Theatre in 1949, and Tairov died a year later. The Kamerny's home at 23 Tverskoy Boulevard is now occupied by the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre. 4to (12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches / 307 x 220 mm), xlvii [1],1-195 (plates), [3], 199-211 (appendix), [1] pages, in publisher's original brown cloth, lacking the rare dust jacket. SCARCE.

The Story of a Country Boy

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. (1934). First. First edition. Orange cloth gilt. Boards a trifle soiled, near fine without dustwrapper. A novel about the evolution of a "self-made man" from a humble country bumpkin to a pretentious captain of industry, by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Basis for the 1935 film Man of Iron directed by William C. McGann, and featuring Barton MacLane and Mary Astor. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of a fairly recent biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. .

        die bisherigen ergebnisse der strahlengenetik

Georg Thieme, Leipzig 1934 - First separate edition. Offprint. Original wrappers. Tear to head and heal of spine, else very good. Inscribed presentation copy to Sewall Wright signed by Timofeeff-Ressovsky."Like Dobzhansky, Timofeeff-Ressovsky attended the Sixth International Congress of Genetics in Ithaca, New York, in 1932, heard Wright speak, and was greatly impressed. Indeed, as in Dobzhansky's case, Timofeeff-Ressovsky's conception of the evolutionary process thereafter bore the strong stamp of Wright's concenptions. Timofeeff-Ressovsky published three major papers on evolution in nature (Buzzati-Traverso, Jucci, and Timofeeff-Ressovsky 1938, Timofeeff-Ressovsky 1939, 1940). All three reflected Wright's ideas."
