Five original amateur black-and-white photographs of the so-called "Battle of Toledo," during the Toledo Auto-Lite Strike of 1934

1934. Rare vernacular views of one of the key disputes in American labor history. The Toledo Auto-Lite Strike (April-June, 1934) marked a key victory for the American Federation of Labor and led to widespread unionization in the auto industry. It was also one of the bloodiest labor diputes of the 20th century, culminating in the "Battle of Toledo" on May 23-25, during which more than 5,000 picketers confronted company strikebreakers and Ohio National Guardsmen; by the time the melée ended, two strikers had been shot to death, another 15 wounded by bullets, and dozens of strikebreakers had received injuries in hand-to-hand combat and from hurled rocks, bricks, and debris. The Auto-Lite plant received extensive damage, and many automobiles were overturned by strikers and set afire. The current group of images records the aftermath of these violent incidents. The photographs show the extensive destruction to the Auto-Lite plant building, with many windows broken out, piles of broken bricks heaped against curbs, overturned vehicles and twisted barricades piled in the street. In several of the images National Guardsmen can be seen milling in the background; in one, a group of soldiers and company men occupies the foreground, with one soldier crouched at the ready behind a Browning machine gun. None of these images appears to have been previously published; they are almost certainly the work of either a strikebreaker or a company representative, as the close proximity of the photographer to National Guard troops and company men makes it seem very unlikely that (s)he was a picketer. Five original (vintage) b/w photographs on glossy photographic paper. Each image 11cm x 8cm (4-1/4" x 3-1/2") or the reverse. Each captioned identically in the same hand, in blue ink, on verso: "Electric Auto-lite Strike / Toledo, Ohio / 1934." Images well-printed, with good contrast; minimal fading; images clean on rectos and versos; Near Fine.

        The Murder Market.

London: Herbert Jenkins, 1934. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.312, [8 of adverts]. Publisher's orange cloth with black titles to spine and front board, in a wonderfully sinister pictorial dustjacket (possibly designed by 'olive', somewhat indecipherable artists facsimile signature to dustwrapper). Incredibly bright and clean internally, jacket shows equally well with just some creasing and nicking along the top and bottom edges, one small closed tear to the rear panel with a crease where the resulting flap had been folded over, now flattened and presentable, some slight rubbing to spine. A cracking copy, unusually bright and fresh.

The Story of a Country Boy

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. (1934). First. First edition. Orange cloth gilt. Boards a trifle soiled, near fine without dustwrapper. A novel about the evolution of a "self-made man" from a humble country bumpkin to a pretentious captain of industry, by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Basis for the 1935 film Man of Iron directed by William C. McGann, and featuring Barton MacLane and Mary Astor. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of a fairly recent biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. .

The Solitude of Ravens. With 62 b/w reproductions.

(Lacks the slip-case, else fine.) One of 1000 copies printed. Photographs by Masahisa Fukase (25 February 1934 - 9 June 2012). Afterword by Akira Hasegawa, in Japanese and English. "The solitude revealed in this collection of images is sometimes so painful that we want to avert our eyes from it. (...) But his photographs possess the artistry to make artistic works even out of hell" (Hasegawa)."Arguably the post-Provoke masterpiece of Japanese photobooks, (...) The imagery is beautiful, surprising, haunting, but ultimately it is Fukase's masterly handling of the narrative and rhythm that makes it so memorable. (...) Even though Fukase made his pictures in bad light and bad weather, never bothering with technical niceties, the results are both luminous and beautiful" (Parr & Badger: "The Photobook. A History", vol. I, p. 306)."Masahisa Fukase (25 February 1934 - 9 June 2012) was a Japanese photographer, celebrated for his work depicting his domestic life with his wife Yoko Wanibe and his regular visits to his parents' small-town photo studio in Hokkaido. He is best known for his 1986 book Karasu (Ravens or The Solitude of Ravens), which in 2010 was selected by the British Journal of Photography as the best photobook published between 1986 and 2009. Since his death in 2012 there has been a revival of interest in Fukase's photography, with new books and exhibitions appearing that emphasize the breadth and originality of his art."
