        Murder on the Orient Express.

London: The Crime Club, W. Collins Sons and Co., 1934.. First edition. Octavo, pp.254; [2], advertisements. Elegantly bound in recent deep red oasis morocco with raised bands and gilt titles and extra gilt to spine, gilt border to boards Some spotting and thumbing within, some leaves folded at corners, externally fine. A presentable and inexpensive copy of this legendary crime novel. One of the greatest locked-room mysteries, with one of the most original solutions. A crowning point in Christie's career, and probably her most high profile title, helped to that prominence by the success of the 1974 film of the same name, featuring among its cast stage and screen luminaries such as Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, and Ingrid Bergman, the last of whom won an Oscar for her performance in the film.

Typed letter signed to noted American band composer and leader Edwin Franko Goldman

1/2 page, single-spaced. Large octavo, 266 x 184 mm. Dated Brookline, Massachusetts, January 31, 1934. With Schoenberg's name and address handstamped to upper left corner. In English. Schoenberg comments about a commissioned translation, by Goldman, of a text he had originally written in German. He is not quite satisfied with Goldman's work and requests a new translation: "Dear Mr. Goldman, you find enclosed the translation you have send [!] me with your letter of January 29th. There you find also some marginal notes where I have signed some of the parts of the translation, by which I cannot be satisfied... I understand your intention in translating my words and I can well appreciate it. Surely it would be of a great advantage if all I have written could be said in such a manner that everybody can conceive it. But surely also: The thought would loose [!] so much of its dep[th] and of its prospect, that I am forced to renounce another succes[s] of my word, than an [in?]adequate-one..." Manuscript annotation to upper right corner in an unknown hand (?Goldman's): "Ans." [?Answer]. Slightly browned and stained; creased at folds; minor remnants of archival mounting tape to blank verso. Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was a band composer and bandleader living in New York. The letter inadvertently testifies to the newly-immigrated Schoenberg's struggle with the English language, but also to his uncompromising nature. In the end, Goldman decided to publish Schoenberg's article in German. See Schoenberg's letter to Goldman of February 3, 1934 published in Arnold Schoenberg: Sämtliche Werke Section IV: Orchestral Works. Series B, Volume 13 edited by Rudolf Stephan, p. xxiii.

Kamerny teatr i ego khudozhniki, 1914-1934 [The Kamerny Theatre and Its Artists, 1914-1934]

Moscow: Izd. Vseros. teatral nogo obshchestva, 1934. First Edition. A celebration of Alexander Tairov's pathbreaking Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, featuring set and costume designs as well as scenes from the theatre's first 20 years. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white, the book showcases each production of the Kamerny, founded by Alexander Tairov (1885-1950 ) and his wife, the actress Alisa Koonen (1889-1974). Tairov brought many non-Russian productions to the Kamerny, including works by Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, Eugene O'Neill, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde. Tairov's productions were known for their magnificent set and costume designs, and he collaborated with some of the most acclaimed avant-garde artists of the day, including Alexandra Exter and Natalia Goncharova. Indeed, it's possible to see the evolution of 20th-century Russian art through the set and costume designs, which reflected Cubist, Constructivist, Rayonist, and even Art Deco influences. It was an exciting time in Soviet theatre; this era featured some of the greatest directors of the 20th century, such as Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, and Vakhtangov. The Kamerny was the scene of one of the most significant plays of the Soviet theatre, according to Nick Worrall in his authoritative study, "Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage" (Cambridge University Press, 1989). Vsevolod Vishnevsky's Russian civil-war play, Optimistic Tragedy, opened at the Kamerny on December 18, 1933. "It concerns particular historical events associated with the civil war in the Soviet Union but, more generally, it is an article of faith -- in the triumph of Life over Death, of the Collective over the Individual, of faith in the necessary tragedy of revolution, of the necessary destruction of those who oppose revolution, of hostility to the spirit of anarchism, and faith in the leadership of the party." Indeed, the play, which is featured in this book, marked an important milestone in the development of "socialist realism." The Soviet government closed the Kamerny Theatre in 1949, and Tairov died a year later. The Kamerny's home at 23 Tverskoy Boulevard is now occupied by the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre. 4to (12 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches / 307 x 220 mm), xlvii [1],1-195 (plates), [3], 199-211 (appendix), [1] pages, in publisher's original brown cloth, lacking the rare dust jacket. In Russian. Blindstamp to front board, both boards rubbed, small scrape to rear paste down. Tissue guards separating each play, plate 36 unpublished, according to list of illustrations in the appendix, plate 41 loose, some small closed tears in a few pages, plate 175 improperly trimmed, not affecting the illustration. Overall, Very Good or better. A stunning look at the first 20 years of the Kamerny Theatre, one of the most innovative theatres at an important moment in Soviet theatre history. SCARCE.

The Story of a Country Boy

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. (1934). First. First edition. Orange cloth gilt. Boards a trifle soiled, near fine without dustwrapper. A novel about the evolution of a "self-made man" from a humble country bumpkin to a pretentious captain of industry, by this satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Basis for the 1935 film Man of Iron directed by William C. McGann, and featuring Barton MacLane and Mary Astor. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said she was "our best comic novelist," and Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist" -- although she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of a fairly recent biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from bohemian artists to wealthy tycoons. .

Inscribed presentation copy to Sewall Wright signed by Timofeeff-Ressovsky."Like Dobzhansky, Timofeeff-Ressovsky attended the Sixth International Congress of Genetics in Ithaca, New York, in 1932, heard Wright speak, and was greatly impressed. Indeed, as in Dobzhansky's case, Timofeeff-Ressovsky's conception of the evolutionary process thereafter bore the strong stamp of Wright's concenptions. Timofeeff-Ressovsky published three major papers on evolution in nature (Buzzati-Traverso, Jucci, and Timofeeff-Ressovsky 1938, Timofeeff-Ressovsky 1939, 1940). All three reflected Wright's ideas."         A unique album of correspondence, including 13 autographed photographs, 8 additional unsigned photographs, 6 Typed Letters, signed, and 4 Autographed Letters, signed, 9 completed "mimeographed form" war records with signed and handwritten responses, and other items of interest by, and about, some of the most distinguished aviators of WWI, including members of the renowned Lafayette Flying Corps, and Lafayette Escadrille. Most of the letters, forms, and photos were replies to inquiries from Colonel James Farber, a writer for the Dayton Daily News, who was asked by an aeronautics magazine in 1934, to "ascertain the present whereabouts and occupations of various wartime pilots."

      - ACES AND AVIATORS OF WW I. Included among the 10 letters is a correspondence on personal letterhead, from renowned American war ace and Medal of Honor recipient, Eddie Rickenbacker, who had 26 aerial victories and was America's most celebrated aviator of the war. Another intriguing response comes from combat pilot, Edwin C. Parsons, one of the 38 members of the famed Lafayette Escadrille, who later became an FBI agent, screen writer, and technical director for Paramount Films. In his 1934 letter, which is type written on Fox Film Corporation Studio letterhead, Parsons writes in part, "I haven't flown a great deal in recent years, having no particular desire to do so and finding no great pleasure in it, although I have been director of flying activities and technical director of several air pictures such as WINGS, LEGION OF THE CONDEMNED and HELL'S ANGELS." WINGS, a 1927, action-romance starring Clara Bow and Gary Cooper, was directed by another former World War I pilot queried by Farber, William "Wild Bill" Wellman. Wellman enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in 1917, but was later assigned as a fighter pilot and was the first American to join N.87, les Chats Noir (Black Cat Group), in the Lafayette Flying Corps. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with two palms for his service. In his 1934 letter to Farber, which is type written on Walter Wagner Productions, Inc. letterhead, Wellman writes in part, "The only times that I fly now are when it is necessary from a business standpoint. I do my flying, then, as a passenger-in other words, frankly, I have had my belly full."One notable correspondence comes from Russian-born, Boris Sergievsky, and includes an accompanying war record that is type-written in his own words. One of the most colorful aviators of his time, Sergievsky began his military career as an infantry officer and was awarded Imperial Russia's highest honor for leading a charge that captured a fortified enemy hilltop. Sergievsky then took to the air and earned the title of ace while flying against Austria-Hungary during the war. After the Bolshevik revolution he joined the White Army, and in 1923, he emigrated to America, where he eventually became chief test pilot for Igor Sikorsky, setting 17 world aviation records. His 1934 letter to Farber is hand written on Sikorsky Aviation Corporation letterhead and includes the original accompanying envelope. Other pilots who wrote letters in response to Farber's inquiries include, Charles H. Dolan, Jr., Frederick Ordway, Jr., Cecil "Pop" Sellers (Sellers died, along with Pan American's first pilot, Edwin Musick, in a mid air explosion while working for the airline), Eliot Springs, Arthur J. Coyle, Jesse creech, Lawrence Smart, and Raymond Collishaw. (Collishaw was Canada's second-highest scoring fighter pilot, and achieved 60 aircraft victories by the war's close, plus a further eight observation balloons, and went on to become a vice admiral in WWII.) 13 autographed photos from this collection include; Eddie Rickenbacker (inscribed to Charles P. Searles), Herman Whitman, Henry Forster, Thomas Moore (three autographed photos), Douglass Campbell (also includes an autographed "Sky Birds" trading card), Reed Landis, Ernest Crossen, John Loggie, and German pilot Kurt Liebau. 8 additional unsigned photos and reprints also accompany the 9 "mimeographed form" war records. These signed, mimeographed forms include biographical information, including parents, marriages, children, occupation, etc., war service including, units served with, enemy aircraft destroyed, dates wounded or captured, decorations, etc. The form also asks for opinions on the "greatest war flyer" from each country. Also included in this unique collection, is an interesting promotional pictorial broadside of William Avery "Billy" Bishop, Canada's top ace of the war, who is credited with 72 victories. The broadside reads in part, "The above genuine Autograph by Colonel Bishop is indeed a Souvenir of the Great World [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Last night a vast audience attended the premiere of Jean Riviere's new cinema, "The Two Worlds,".The beautiful star herself was present, escorted by a young man known as her infatuated protector of the moment. .Then came the masterly but savage scene, the climax, which showed the heroine strangled in her bath by a faithless lover." Emmanuel Bove was born Emmanuel Bobovnikoff in 1898 in Paris to a Russian father and a Luxembourgish mother. He studied at the Ecole alsacienne and the lycée Calvin de Genève. At the age of 14, he decided to become a novelist. In 1915, he was sent to boarding school in England, where he completed his education. In 1921, he married Suzanne Vallois and moved to the suburbs of Vienna. There he began his writing career, publishing numerous popular novels under the pseudonym Jean Vallois. He returned to Paris in 1922 and worked as a journalist. His work came to the attention of Colette, who helped him publish his first novel under his own name, Mes amis (My Friends) in 1924. The novel became a success and he consistently published until the The Second World War, winning the Prix Figuière in 1928.         TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS), to Lester Anderson, dated 31 July 1934, ribbon copy, one sheet of letter-size bond, single-spaced, typed on recto only, signed in full in blue pencil ("Clark Ashton Smith") at bottom, with one autograph edit (insertion of three words)

1934. Anderson was a California Bay Area fan to whom Smith wrote on several other occasions as well. This letter, about 400 words, has the tone of something written from a sense of obligation rather than pleasure, to address points raised evidently in Anderson's previous letter to him. No, Smith doesn't think socialism will work in this country, or in Russia either. He thought Robert W. Chambers' SLAYER OF SOULS was "inexpressively pediculous." He dismisses most of the current pulp magazines, except for ASTOUNDING STORIES, and doesn't think much of Dashiell Hammett's anthology, CREEPS BY NIGHT. "Harre's BEWARE AFTER DARK is still unapproached in my opinion, as an anthology of weirds." Published (with slight alterations) in Schultz and Connors, Selected Letters of Clark Ashton Smith, p. 259-260. Three light horizontal creases where folded for mailing, very good. (#136826)
