Sovremennaia kitaiskaia khudozhestvennaia literatura: kratkaia spravka [Contemporary Chinese literature: a short overview]. (Signed and inscribed)

Harbin: N. P. Kobtsev; tip. "Zaria", 1934. Quarto (26.5 × 19.5 cm). Original printed wrappers; 17 pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to Vladimir Petrovich in Almaty, Kazachstan in 1959. One page with author's ink correction. About very good; covers with light soil and a few nicks; old bookstore label inside rear wrapper. Rare Russian-language overview of recent developments in Chinese literature, which suggests that Chinese national literature still must develop and that, in spite of many attempts, Chinese modern literature still has few works comparable to European classics. The author argues that the greatest advances are being made in contemporary realist prose. Baranov (1886-1972) was a translator and Sinologist who taught Chinese language, ethnography, history and literature to employees of the Russian Far Eastern Railway and various universities in Manchuria. He authored over 150 works within his areas of specialization. In 1958 he immigrated to the Soviet Union, where he settled in Almaty, Kazachstan.         ETNOGRAFIA ANGOLANA.

      - [.] (Subsídios). Africa Ocidental Portuguesa. (Malange e Lunda). 1ª Exposição Colonial Portuguesa. Litografia Nacional. Porto. 1934. PHOTOGRAPHY - MOUTA. (Fernando). ANGOLA ETHNOGRAPHY. Portuguese Western Africa (Malange and Lunda) . 1st Portuguese Colonial Exhibition. Oporto 1934 Dim.: 34x26 cm. With 10 pps. + 50 unbound illustrated folios. Soft cover with loose folios in editor?s case illustrated on the covers. The work is composed by 10 folios with text, a coloured map and 49 photos in sepia. This copy shows small tares on the editor?s case. A very important work, not only for ethnography, but also for anthropology and photography, published for the First Portuguese Colonial Exhibition in 1934 in Oporto. The author?s introduction, dated ?Lisboa 1933?, presents a brief description of several ethnicities from Angola: Jingas, Bondos, Bângalas, Songos, Quiôcos, Xinges, Mussucos, Hôlos, Lunda e Bapendes(?) (written in 3 languages, Portuguese, French and English). There is no information on the author of the drawings and capital letters, nor on the designer responsible for the graphic creation. The map, depicting the North of Angola, was drawn by the author, Fernando Mouta, himself (name followed by the note ?Eng. IST?, engineer graduated from the Instituto Superior Técnico - Technical University). The photos always show head shots, taken at eye level, front, profile and back, in different formats, standing out from a blurred background, except for the last one which shows two women, full body, carrying children, standing in front of two shacks (houses or barns). This series of photos from Fernando Mouta is valued by the minimalism of the portraits and the proximity of the bodies. It is

Autograph Letter Signed, to Father [William Force] Stead

Sept. 26 [1934]. 1 p. framed (visible: 220 x 180 mm; outer frame: 370 x 320 mm). On Yeats' stationary at Riversdale, Willbrook, Rathfarnham, Dublin. Together with framed portraits of Yeats and Maude Gonne (reproductions of photographs). An important, enigmatic letter by Yeats to his close friend Father William Force Stead, describing the significance and symbolism of the Butterfly and the Hawk in "the ring I always wear" which was designed for him by Edmund Dulac. These two symbols played a major part in Yeats's artistic and spiritual development; in the words of Yeats's persona Tom O'Roughley, who found himself liberated from the hawk (i.e. thought) and free to follow the butterfly (i.e. artistic vision). Indeed, in the "Tom O'Roughley" poem Yeats writes: "An aimless joy is a pure joy... And wisdom is a butterfly / And not a gloomy bird of prey." According to George Mills Harper, these lines were among Yeats's favorites, and "came to represent in his mind the wisdom of age in contrast to youth [...] and when signed a book for anybody he 'put in a line of verse,' usually these two lines." According to Yeats himself, "I suppose that I might have put hawks into the fourth stanza because I have a ring with a hawk and a butterfly upon it, to symbolize the straight road of logic, and so of mechanism, and the crooked road of intuition" (Source: The Making of Yeats's A Vision: A Study of the Automatic Script, Volume 1, 1987, p. 51). It is not without interest that Yeats published his "Wheels and Butterflies" collection of plays in November of 1934, two months after the present letter was written. This letter does not appear to have been published in full in print; it is however referenced and transcribed in the online subscription database CL InteLex (Accession #6102). TRANSCRIPTION IN FULL: "Dear Father Stead, Are you back at Worcester [College Oxford]? I had heard that you had given up your work as Chaplin? The butterfly is the main symbol in my ring -- the ring I always wear -- the other symbol is the hawk. The hawk is the straight road of logic, the butterfly the crooked road of intuition -- the hawk pounces, the butterfly flutters. I do not know any work upon the subject. I got like you a vision if I remember rightly. I suggest that your candle is knowledge, conscious effort, thought; & the butterfly the wisdom out of 'the unconsciousness' that follows. A Japanese describes the attainment of Nirvana in these words "Something delightful has happened to the young man but he can only tell it to his sweetheart." Sincerely, WB Yeats" The recipient of the letter is Father William Force Stead, an intimate of both Yeats and T.S. Eliot (whom he baptized into the Anglican faith). The present letter, dated Sept. 26 [1934] prompted Stead to write his final letter to Yeats, dated Sept. 29, 1934. No further correspondence between the two men survive. Much has been written about Stead's relationship with Yeats and Eliot. See especially Warwick Gould, "Wheels and Butterflies: Title, Structure, Cover Design" in: Yeats's Mask, Yeats Annual No. 19 (2013) Special Issue, pp. 369-378 (especially note 10), and in the same issue: David Bradshaw, "‘Oxford Poets': Yeats, T. S. Eliot and William Force Stead," pp. 77-102). George Mills Harper, "William Force Stead's Friendship with Yeats and Eliot" in: Massachusetts Review, 21:1 (Spring 1980), pp. 9-38. Thirty-four numbered pages of humorous text (which never fails to tout Essomarine products) and red, white and blue illustrations by Dr. Seuss illustrating various aspects of sailing a ship (with tongue always firmly in cheek). Also included are two pages of advertising for Essomarine oils and greases and a handy reference chart specifying which Essomarine product to use in specific makes and models of inboard engines in use in 1934. This publication is a good example of Dr. Seuss's ability to combine his artistic and literary abilities in a commercial endeavor with the end product being an advertising piece like no other. The condition of this book is VERY GOOD +. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The Pastimes of Aleck Maury

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Near Fine/Good. First English edition, published in the U.S. as Aleck Maury, Sportsman.. Near fine in a soiled, good dustwrapper with several modest chips and tears. The author's most important and celebrated novel, about a Southerner who is both a scholar and a sportsman, based on the life of her father. As might be inferred from the subject, interest in the novel in England was bound to be minimal, and the first printing there was almost certainly miniscule. Exceptionally uncommon in the English edition.
