Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front end paper, "Peter, from Morgan 17.4.34". Nine photographic plates. Peter is likely to be Peter Savary both a friend of Forster and a pupil of Dickinson's at Cambridge. Dickinson, then sixty, had a habit of falling in love with straight young men, which he duly did with Savary.

I, Claudius : from the autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, born B.C. 10, murdered and deified A.D. 54; [with] Claudius the God and His Wife Messalina

Harrison Smith and Robert Haas [through 1935] MCMXXXIV [1934], New York - First American Editions (no additional printings noted) in First State bindings. Tall, thick 8vo's: 494, with with title page vignette and folding genealogical table of Tree of the Imperial Family and Connexions; 583,[1], with title page vignette and two folding genealogical tables, of the Royal Family of the Herods and of the Tree of the Imperial Family. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spines stamped in gilt, medallions stamped in blind (I, Claudius) and gilt (Claudius the God) on upper covers; pictorial dust jackets, I, Claudius priced $3.00 with "recommended by the Book-of-the-Month Club" decal on upper cover, Claudius the God unpriced and unclipped. (Speculation abounds as to whether this is actually the book-club issue, but aside from the unpriced jacket it is otherwise identical to the first trade edition. What's more, the jacket's back panel contains a list of 40 Smith and Hass titles, all priced, highly unusual for any book-club edition.) An uncommonly bright set, about Fine (evidence of neat, partial book plate removal from upper paste down of Claudius the God), in better than Near Fine jackets without tears or chips but spine panels faded (as inevitably). Higginson A42b and A43b. Graves's fictional autobiography of the Roman Emperor Claudius, using psychological realism in a story of political intrigue in first century Rome. Claudius the God and His Wife Messalina soon followed, and the publication of these books brought Graves international recognition and some financial stability. "Before Graves, this literary form was seldom other than a romance, contemporary to whatever age in which it was written and covered over with a thin veneer reminiscent of exotic climates and distant times and places. Graves, however, uses the form of the historical novel not to disguise the present but to explore and bring to light the past. . . . It is a measure of Graves’s talent and skill that he can make his evocation of the past seem real and vivid, even to those with a solid grounding in the history of the early Roman Empire."         Mein Weltbild.

Amsterdam: Querido, 1934 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black cloth folding case. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. Light partial tanning to free endpapers. An excellent, sharp copy in the jacket which is rubbed and creased with toned spine panel, chips, closed tears, and a faint spot of dampstain to the upper panel. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "Gesammelte Länder [Collected Countries], Albert Einstein" under the printed title which has been struck through. Einstein's inscription seems to refer to the German title, which means approximately "My World View". This volume is rare signed and contains five essays by Einstein on science, religion, politics, and philosophy: "The World As I See It", "Of Politics and Pacifism", "Germany 1933", "Judaism", and "Science". Since his childhood in Prussia Einstein had been opposed to militant nationalism and enforced conformity, even renouncing his German citizenship for that of Switzerland as a teenager. As he grew in stature as a physicist he began using his celebrity to promote his philosophical ideals – internationalism, pacifism, and Zionism – earning him much vitriol from the far-right but endearing him to millions of others around the world. This edition is entirely in German; the first English language edition was published in the US in 1949. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Original Photographic Portrait Study for:] MAN OF ARAN

[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1934].. [Np: The Photographer, ca. 1934].. Original platinum print portrait photograph (48 x 37.5 cm; 19 x 15"). Mounted on oversize heavy linen mat paper (mat has tears and losses at edges, with pinholes at corners from display). Minor oxidation at extreme edges of print and a few faint flecks to emulsion finish, 2 cm closed tear in right edge of print (in and expanse of white, without loss), a bit curled, but otherwise image very good. A superb character study portrait photograph by Frances Flaherty, produced in the context of her work with her husband, Robert J. Flaherty, on the landmark creative documentary film, THE MAN OF ARAN, signed in pencil by her on the mount to the immediate lower right of the image. The verso of the mount bears the stamp: '"Man of Aran" [/] A Gainsborough Picture [/] Directed by Robert J. Flaherty [/] Copyright Photo." The portrait is an interior shot of one of the elder women in the cast, from mid-torso up, eyes cast top left, with an expression of anguish. The collaborative work of Frances and Robert Flaherty on this project, as well as subsequent projects, such as THE LAND and LOUISIANA STORY, has been the topic of considerable scholarly research, particularly in regard to their seminal influence on the film documentary. MAN OF ARAN is regarded as one of their triumphs, with Aran Island residents cast in semi-fictionalized roles, and while often engaged in anachronistic practices, depicting vividly their harsh lives and traditions. It is not uncommon for photographs by Frances to be misattributed to Robert -- he was an active still photographer on the four Mackenzie expeditions to the Canadian sub-Arctic (1910-1916), but as he became more involved in the directing of motion pictures, specifically NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922), the role of still photographer passed more and more to Frances - they were married in 1914 - his collaborator on many levels, including screenwriter. Vintage prints of her photographs are rather uncommon.

Isaac Roosevelt (1726-1794) Soldier, Statesman, Citizen of New York: A short genealogical record of the Roosevelts from 1649 to 1934 and notes in reference to John Bailey sword maker to the Officers of the American Revolution

New York: Privately Printed, 1934. New York: Privately Printed, 1934. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine. [3], 7, [7] pages on hand-made paper; 2 mounted photographs, the first of a painted portrait of Isaac Roosevelt and the second of the sword. Folio-sized, 10-1/4 by 14 inches. A rather odd book, presenting a survey of Franklin Roosevelt's male ancestors, with an emphasis on the Revolutionary War-era politician Isaac Roosevelt. The final page is devoted to John Bailey, who made a sword for Isaac. It appears that the House of Peters, at one time a fine clothier, had turned to selling artificts in the 1930s, issuing elaborate books to document collections they presumably had for sale. In this case, your humble cataloguer believes they had in their possession a sword once owned by Isaac Roosevelt, and seeing that his great-great grandson was in the White House, sought to capitalize on this fact. It is, in any case, an uncommon book, published in an edition of just 12 copies. Two copies located on OCLC, one at the American Antiquarian Society and the second at the Harry Ransom Center. Bound in yellow half morocco over blue cloth. Spine tanned, with a bit of spotting to the leather, else a near fine copy in a very good slipcase. Bookmark ribbon detached but laid in. Copy 3 of 12, numbered, signed Fred Peters and dated on a sheet of House of Peters letterhead, tipped to the first leaf.

The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze + full chemise and slipcase

Randon House, New York 1934 - Stated 1st Edition, and one of only 1900 copies of the1st Printing of the author's 1st book, in original dustjacket, and housed in a grayish-green cloth-covered full chemise and slipcase with a black leather spine label with gold printing. The Near Fine book is bound in rough finish woven ivory colored cloth with a black spine, a gold foil with black printing wrap-around title band mounted on the binding, and it has publisher's orange upper page edges. The book is straight, clean, very tight (probably unread), with no previous owner's writing or soiling. There is a very slight bump to the upper spine end by the back fold, a tiny black dot (pencil-point sized) to the lower rear binding panel, and a short, narrow depression to the front of the gold foil band that didn't remove any color. The dustjacket is surprisingly well preserved for aged uncoated paper - very close to Near Fine but I'll call it VG+. It is price intact, clean and not fragile, with some of the normal toning to the edges (less than it looks like on our scan) and a bit more toning to the spine though the black and red spine printing isn't faded at all. It has 3 small edge nicks at spine end folds, 1 very short completely closed edge tear upper front panel near the spine, a small surface abrasion at the lower spine end not interferring with lettering - and that's it as far as wear. There are a few faint finger smudges that aren't obtrusive at all. The dustjacket is now protected by a clear, removable heavy mylar cover. The chemise and slipcase have been custom made to fit the book at some time in the past. The chemise folds to cover the book all the way around (with ends open) and has a ribbon-pull to get the book and chemise out of the slipcase easily. There is just a tiny bit of cloth wear to the outside edges of the slipcase, and some small surface scratches not affecting the gilt lettering to the leather title label on the slipcase's closed side. Our scan makes the chemise look a different color than the slipcase but it isn't - both are the darker color shown in the slipcase spine image. Quite a handsome presentation of the author's 1st book of short stories. ; 9-1/8" x 5-3/4"; 270 pages [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He writes in response to a request to write his biography. "Dear Madam, In reply to your kind letter of 14th asking to write a biography of me - I expect you are not aware that - in 1934 I published through Marshall Morgan & Co. of 11/12 Paternoster Building, London, my book Memories of a Scientific Life - price 5 (pounds) - in which I gave the full story of my career. and Sir Oliver Lodge wrote a Foreword to it. As this book has not yet sold out its first Edition I should not like to do anything to hinder its sale by the publication of another biography yet a while. It would hardly be fair to the publishers who have perhaps not yet recovered their outlay on it. In any event I could hardly give any more information about myself than is contained in these memories. I would suggest your obtaining a copy of it for reference...." He signs,in full, "Ambrose Fleming," and adds in a post script, "P.S. Perhaps some serial could be written without injury to the 'Memories.'"

        More Pricks Than Kicks

London: Chatto & Windus, 1934. London: Chatto & Windus,, 1934. Octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to spine in blue, top edge stained tan. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter green morocco folding case. Pages just a little toned, small bookseller's label to lower pastedown, lettering to spine just beginning to flake, an excellent copy in the rubbed and somewhat frayed dust jacket, missing a piece along the front fold and a few smaller pieces at the corners. First edition, first impression of the author's first published book of fiction (preceded only by the poem Whoroscope and his essay Proust). This is certainly Beckett's scarcest regularly published book. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the title page, "to Molly with much love 40 years later from Sam". And with the recipient Mollie Roe's pencil ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Molly (or Mollie) Roe was Beckett's first cousin with whom he had been particularly close from early childhood. They remained in contact throughout their lives as evidenced by this inscription which would appear to date from the mid 1970s. Copies of the first edition of More Pricks than Kicks are of considerable scarcity in collectable condition; examples in dust jacket are rare. We know of a tiny handful of which only one other would seem to be inscribed.

        Forces in Molecules

Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Feynman's undergraduate thesis at MIT, "a fundamental discovery" published in The Physical Review when he was just twenty-one. "Forces or energy-that was the choice for those seeking to apply the quantum understanding of the atom to the workings of real materials. At stake was not mere terminology but a root decision about how to conceive of a problem and how to proceed in calculating...

"As Feynman conceived the structure of molecules, forces were the natural ingredients. He saw springlike bonds with varying stiffness, atoms attracting and repelling one another. The usual energy-accounting methods seemed secondhand and euphemistic... [He demonstrated that] the force on an atom's nucleus is no more or less than the electrical force from the surrounding field of charged electrons-the electrostatic force. Once the distribution of charge has been calculated quantum mechanically, then from that point forward quantum mechanics disappears from the picture. The problem becomes classical; the nuclei can be treated as static points of mass and charge. Feynman's approach applies to all chemical bonds" (Gleick). His discovery, now known as Feynman's theorem or the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, has endured as an efficient approach to the calculation of forces in molecules.Provenance: With ownership signature of D.W.       Tuskegee Institute, AL, 1934. Tuskegee Institute, AL, 1934. unbound. 2 pages, 11 x 8.5 inches, on personal "Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute" letterhead, Tuskegee Institute, AL, April 27, 1934 -- an explicit letter to a young man, filled with highly personal observations on the race barrier which separates them, in part: "Your letter touches me so very deeply as it touches my life so vitally. The financial condition has and is a great stumbling block in our path, this in time I hope will be overcome I am sure. The great mountain which separates us and which is forming the greatest barrier is race hatred, neither you nor I have it. We are scientists searching for truth, our souls are attuned to that great harmonious chord that naturally draws us together...As you know you are my ideal as a young man..." Signed "G.W. Carver." Two punch-holes in the top margin; natural folds. Very good condition.

        Forces in Molecules

Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society. Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society.

His discovery, now known as Feynman's theorem or the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, has endured as an efficient approach to the calculation of forces in molecules. Provenance: With ownership signature of D.W. Epstein on front cover; presumably the D.W. Epstein who, along with I.G. Mallof developed the electron gun in 1934. IN: The Physical Review, Vol 56, Second Series, Number 4, August 15, 1939. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Physical Society, 1939. Quarto, original wrappers. Toning around edges of wrappers, red paint marks on spine extending into front wrapper. Rare in original wrappers. Note: A custom cloth box is available for this item for an additional $225.
