Denslow illustrations throughout including 8 colour plates. A truly exceptional copy, with only the paper band which held instructional envelope to the book lacking. First edition, first state, with publisher's imprint to the spine. A most unusual toy book; the reader was invited to take the die-cut figures and assemble them into three dimensional models which, when placed on the provided sloping runway, would move or "waddle" down on their own. A very scarce Oz title, this is one of very few known copies containing the original waddle figures: Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Wizard.

Fugitives. The Story of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker

Dallas: The Ranger Press, Inc., , 1934. As told by Bonnie's Mother (Mrs. Emma Parker) and Clyde's Sister (Nell Barrow Cowan.) Compiled, Arranged, and Edited by … Octavo, original vermilion cloth lettered in black on spine and upper board, with the striking pictorial dust jacket. Dual portrait frontispiece, tail-piece. A very good copy in price-clipped jacket, a little sunned at the spine, a few chips at the edges with no loss to lettering or images, lower panel a little remarked, but remains a very good copy. First edition. Rushed out within two months of the death of the notorious couple in a road-side ambush in Louisiana, this sensational "ghosted" joint biography - drawing credibility, but very little new information from the families - was one of the primary sources of the romantic legend of Bonnie and Clyde. A bright copy.

Thoughts Upon Hunting Kit in a Series of Nine Letters to a Friend

Millbrook: Privately Printed for the author [by The Derrydale Press], 1934. First edition. No. 117 of 500 copies. Illustrated with photographs, and a drawing by the author. 1 vols. 12mo. In the regular red paper over boards, with white paper printed label on the upper cover. Fine in original glassine (chipped). Bookplate. In our experience this issue is rarer than the deluxe morocco binding. The Rare Issue in Boards This is an almost unprocurable Derrydale Press title. The book appeared in two bindings: red paper boards with a printed white label, and in full leather with gilt medallion on upper cover. Siegel states that "We understand from a reliable source that upon housekeeping after Mr. Reynal's death, a large carton of Thoughts Upon Hunting Kit was taken to the dump ...".

        Epithalamion. A Poem

(Higham) : Gemini Press , (1934) but 1980. Tall quarto. (51)pp. From an edition of 330 copies, this is one of 280 copies on Basingwerk Parchment. Each of the twenty-three stanzas of the poem is illustrated with a full-page wood-engraving by Hughes-Stanton, who was typical of most of the English wood engravers of his day in that he preferred deep black prints from the blocks. He was the most accomplished artist technically, creating "engravings so fine that it is hard to believe they are wood." While his idiom is is modern, he revived the use of the multiple tool which engraves several parallel lines simultaneously. This produces a variety of textures seldom achieved by others. This is the first of only two books printed under Hughes-Stanton's own Gemini Press imprint. This is the Basilisk Press reissue of the unsold copies from the 1934 printing, of which more than half the edition remained in sheets. Hughes-Stanton has signed the colophon page in graphite, and there is an additional booklet included in the slipcase that provides background into the establishment of the Gemini Press, the printing of this particular title, and a bibliography of Hughes-Stanton's work. Extremely fine in a binding by Paul Collet and David Sellars of brown morocco-trimmed boards and brown morocco lettering piece, housed in a board slipcase.

Tobacco Road Original Playbill for Opening Night at the Forrest Theatre [Signed by Erskine Caldwell, Jack Kirkland, Maude Odell, and Margaret Wycherly]

The New York Theatre Program Corporation, 1934, Staples Sheets, Book Condition: Very Good +, First editionThe Original Playbill for the Opening Night performance of Tobacco Road -- the Play -- at Broadway's Forrest Theatre in New York City, SIGNED BY ERSKINE CALDWELL, JACK KIRKLAND, MAUDE ODELL, and MARGARET WYCHERLY. Originally published in 1932, Erskine Caldwell's novel, "Tobacco Road", centers around the Lesters, a Georgia Sharecropping family living during the Great Depression, and illustrates the effect of deep poverty on their morals and on their behavior. Jack Kirkland adapted the Novel for the stage, but could not get anyone to produce it. Confident in the Play, Kirkland financed it himself, using his life savings of $6,000 to do so. His Play went on to become, at its time, the longest running Broadway Play in history, running for 3,182 performances. (As of July 20, 2014, the Play remained the eighteenth longest-running Play in Broadway History.) The Play starred Maude Odell, one of the 20th Century's best-known actresses, as Sister Bessie Rice, Margaret Wycherly as Ada Lester, and Henry Hull as Jeeter Lester. Of the Play, New York Times theatre critic Brooks Atkinson wrote: "The theatre has never sheltered a fouler or more degenerate parcel of folks than the hardscrabble family of Lester...It is the blunt truth of the characters he is describing, and it leaves a malevolent glow of poetry... As Jeeter Lester, Henry Hull gives the performance of his career. Plays as clumsy and rudderless as 'Tobacco Road' seldom include so many scattered items that leave such a vivid impression." The Play debuted on December 4, 1933 at The Masque Theatre (now called the John Gold Theatre). Although panned by the critics and a commercial failure, Kirkland remained convinced that the Play had a vital dramatic message and refused to give up. When the Play was told to leave the Masque, Kirkland relocated it to the 48th Street Theatre, where, using his now meager funds, he nursed it along for approximately ten weeks. Suddenly, a positive newspaper editorial appeared and magazine writers began to battle the critics over the Play's merits. The Play gained momentum and relocated to the more prestigious Forrest Theatre on 49th Street (now the Eugene O'Neill Theatre) with James Bell, the well-regarded stage actor, replacing Henry Hull who had given the Play up and departed for Hollywood. Performances then ran for nearly seven years, ending on May 31, 1941, both making it the Forrest Theatre's earliest notable production and making Jack Kirkland a rich man. Without the Play and Kirkland's perseverance, "Tobacco Road", the novel, likely would not have gained the fame that it did. It was Kirkland's Play that spawned the novel's success, and it was as a result of the Play that Caldwell's work gained instant fame and sold millions of copies, making it his first financial success and laying the foundation for his reputation as a great Southern writer. (In his Autobiography, Caldwell noted that, at one point during the Play's run at the Forrest Theatre, he was earning approximately $2,000 a week in royalties from the Play and $1,000 a month in royalties from the book. In 1982, Caldwell stated that, to the best of his knowledge, there had not been a week in the then-preceeding 49 years that the Play had not been performed somewhere in the world.) It is all of this which makes the Forrest Playbill an important part of literary history. In Very Good + condition, the Playbill's third page, which serves as the title page for the Play, has been SIGNED BY ERSKINE CALDWELL, JACK KIRKLAND, MAUDE ODELL, and MARGARET WYCHERLY. A SCARCE TO RARE ITEM AND THE FOUNDATION FOR BOTH CALDWELL'S AND HIS NOVEL'S SUCCESS.

Amcho" Solom-Aleichema Divertisments ("Amcha" Sholem Aleichem's Divertisments)

Daugavpils 1934 - Broadside 27.5" x 19.5" (poster) in red and black lettering in the style of the early 20th-century Latvian avantgarde. Advertisement for the performance of excerpts from his plays "Amcha" and "200,000" put on by the Hebrew Gymnasium in Dvinsk Daugavpils, which is located at the borders of Belarus and Lithuania. "Amcha," Sholem Aleichem's play on the common Jew, inspired the composer and conductor Shabtai Petrushka (b. in Leipzig 1903, died in Jerusalem 1997) to create music for the play. "200,000" is a musical comedy about a lottery winner based on Shalom Aleichem's story "The Big Win." The scenes were purposefully performed on Friday, February 2, 1934 at 9pm, which meant the performance violated the traditional Jewish observance of the Sabbath. Approximately 11,000 Jews lived in Dvinsk at this time and the community supported six primary schools plus the Gymnasium. Text in Hebrew and Latvian. Folded into quarters. Slight creasing and chipping. Overall in good condition.

Bloomfield écrit dans sa bibliographie analytique (A bibliography of internal medicine: Communicable diseases, p. 242) : " This handsome folio volume of some seven hundred pages stands out as A LANDMARK IN THE LITERATURE ON LEPROSY. Well printed on fine paper and beautifully illustrated, the book is a tribute to the printer's art as well as to the scientist's efforts. Of special interest is the excellent historical introduction, as well as the section on prophylaxis and leprosaria, with its many illustrations. Every phase of the disease is discussed, documented, and illustrated". Roberts et al. : The Past and Present of Leprosy (p. 162). © S.A.S.         Lost Horizon (signed by author)

Macmillan, 1934. 1st edition, 3rd reprint. Hardcover. Green boards a bit marked, spine slightly browned, the pages all clean and tidy. Signed and inscribed by the author to 'Frederick I. Cowles, with all good wishes from James Hilton, Dec. 1st 1934.', and with Cowles's bookplate on the fpd. An interesting association, because Cowles was a well-known author of ghost stories in the 1930s. Signed copies of Hilton's most famous novel are scarce, and this one is unique with this inscription.

        Doctor Martino and Other Stories

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas 1934 - First edition, signed limited issue of 360 numbered copies. Signed by Faulkner on the limitation page. Publisher's maroon and black cloths, lettered in gilt, black top stain, printed on rag paper. About near fine, with some light wear to the spine ends, light fading and slight lean to the spine, bookseller's plate to the rear pastedown, bright and clean interior. Overall, a pleasing copy. Petersen A16.1a. Doctor Martino is a collection of short stories that includes "Fox Hunt," "There Was a Queen," "The Leg," "Mountain Victory," "Death Drag," and "Honor," among others. In these stories, Faulkner experiments with a variety of literary styles and techniques; some of the stories, such as "Doctor Martino" and "Beyond," contain elements of the supernatural, while others, such as "Black Music" and "Smoke," are indicative of the author's experimentation with the detective genre. Notably, the most popular stories in the collection, including "The Hound" and "Wash," are set in the post-war south in Faulkner's typical fashion and foreshadow his later novels The Hamlet (1940) and Absalom, Absalom! (1936), respectively. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Marlborough: His Life and Times, Volume II

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1934. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, only printing of the second volume of Churchill's Marlborough - a premium copy suitable for filling a superior first edition set. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes and was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. The first edition is physically impressive, bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms in gilt on the front cover, a gilt text block top edge, and a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. Here is the first British edition, first printing of Volume II, a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket, scarce thus. During the four years covered by Volume II (1702-1705), Marlborough led England as Captain-General. The volume is a substantial 651 pages with 31 illustrations, 76 maps and plans, and 3 document facsimiles. The plum cloth binding retains vivid color and is square, clean, and tight with bright gilt, and nicely rounded spine. We note only a bump to the lower rear corner. The contents remain bright and crisp. Bright top edge gilt. The book feels unread. The sole previous ownership mark is an inked gift inscription dated "Christmas 1935" on the first free endpaper. Light spotting and age-toning is confined to the fore and bottom edges. The dust jacket is the correct - and increasingly elusive - first printing, confirmed by an unclipped front flap that retains the original price with no mention of "2nd Impression". The jacket is notably clean and complete, with only trivial wear to the spine ends and an unobtrusive .5 inch closed tear at the spine heel. Spine toning is minimal, with only mild color shift between the jacket spine and faces. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
