Watchers in the Hills - Original Typescript with the Author's Corrections

Hebron Burghfield Common (near Reading, Berkshire): Original Typescript, 1934 - Hebron Burghfield Common (near Reading, Berkshire): Original Typescript, 1934. 578 pages, of which 573 are numbered, rectos only with corrections in the author's hand on almost every page. The pages have been punched and bound with a red ribbon in an oversize thick paper cover. Cover torn but still in very good condition, pages mostly near fine. The last page of the novel was date-stamped "5th December 1934" on the verso (probably by the publisher). The novel of the same title, which is set in Peshawar and surroundings, was first published by Hutchinson in London in 1935. This typescript comes from the archives of German film director and producer Richard Eichberg (1888-1952), best known for his "exotic location" movies "The Tiger of Eschnapur" (1938) and "The Indian Tomb" (1938). Major William Robert Foran (1881-1968) was one of the 6 original European officers of the British East Africa Police. He published no fewer than 15 works of fiction, history, biography, travel and reminiscences. His passion was big game hunting and he was one of the foremost ivory hunters in East Africa in the first decades of the 20th century, at one point taking American president Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit as well as the Duke and Duchess of Kent on hunting safaris.       Westfield, NJ; Sarasota, FL; New York, and elsewhere. 1934 - 1938.. Sixty-one leaves, plus cover-leaf, quarto, heavily worked over in ink, colored pencil and pencil. On various paper stocks, some leaves with other typescript fragments on versos, also corrected, from other work by Kantor. Some leaves on cheap paper tanned and with modest chipping at edges; generally good to very good or better. Enclosed in a custom binder and slipcase; with associated material outlined below. The original working first draft typescript of one of Kantor's most popular early works, donated by him after its publication to an auction held by the League of American Writers in 1938 to raise funds for the Spanish Loyalist cause. To further that end, present here is a 4 page typescript, signed at the end, of an essay Kantor wrote for the occasion, detailing the history of the manuscript and identifying it as the first draft. He additionally signed the concluding page of the main typescript and the cover leaf. Also present is a t.l.s. from booksellers Retz & Storm to the collector for whom they acted as agents in the acquisition of the typescript at the sale, their original invoice, and the retained carbons of several of the collector's letters to them about the sale and other matters. Finally, the lot also includes a t.l.s. from Kantor, Sarasota, 23 April 1938, to the collector, Benjamin D. Hitz, responding to his letter about his acquisition, reading in part: "I am glad that you have the manuscript ... and that you got it without mortgaging your future, although the Spanish Loyalists do need all the support they can get, and more too. You know, I feel rather as if I had had to give away a well- loved dog - to strangers, sight unseen - and had suddenly become possessed of the knowledge that the dog had a good home and green fields to run in...." Kantor's novella was published, both in periodical and in book form, in 1935, and in 1936 a film adaptation by Samuel Hoffenstein and Harvey Gates, starring Lionel Barrymore, Maureen O'Sullivan and Dudley Digges, enjoyed some popularity. Accompanied by a copy of the trade edition of the published book.

Photo Album - South America - "Karlsruhe" Voyage

South America, 1934. Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Mexico, NW Pacific Coast, 1934-1935. Photograph album of a voyage to the Americas onboard German Cruiser 'Karlsruhe' with special attention to South America, including views of Rio de Janeiro, Valparaíso, and lesser photographed regions. Contains 187 black and white photographs (a scant few are sepia), most neatly captioned in manuscript in German, as well as a map of the voyage printed in photographic format, all mounted with transparent corners. Photographs vary in size with numerous extra large formats, the largest of these measuring approximately 25 x 20 cm, and the smallest approximately 6 x 6 cm. Oblong Quarto string-tied album measuring approximately 36 x 26 cm, brown cloth plaid boards. Very Good Condition, vivid images meticulously organized and captioned in detail. The German navy, at the time of these images, granted their newest recruits a one year world voyage, purposed for training, but surely also to instill aspirations for greatness likening that of their commanders. Under the leadership and example of Admiral Johann Günther Lütjens - who in 1941 would command the German offensive' Operation Rheinübung' with battleship Bismarck - the seaman who compiled this album not only records the orderly and effective pre-WWII naval structure of a powerful nation, he observes aspects of Latin American custom most divergent to that of his homeland, and preserves the most significant scenes in striking photographs. The vessel, flying the Reichsmarin 1933-1935 war ensign, is first seen passing São Miguel island in the Azores archipelago, then stopping at the Port of Spain in Trinidad, which the men were permitted to visit. Rio de Janeiro then appears in 15 photographs, two of these being large professional views taken from the hilltop overlooking the prestigious beachfront neighbourhood of Botafogo and across the bay to Pao de Acucar or Sugar Loaf Mountain - one of Rio's most famous landmarks. A city tour also shows the Canal do Mangue flanked by palm trees, the cliffside Avenida Niemeyer which leads to the neighbourhood of Leblon a São Conrado and was completed in 1913, and the monument to Floriano Peixoto in Cinelândia square on Avenida Rio Branco. Uncommon are the subsequent views of São Francisco do Sul, and of Blumenau, a city founded by Germans in the state of Santa Catarina,, where the ship's enormous crew and band marches through the street in December 1934. An important figure, Herr Sterinbach is marked in one city scene, his family and home also photographed here. From Brazil the voyage proceeds to Montevideo, the capital and largest city of Uruguay, with lovely views showing the Palacio Salvo which had been completed only some six years prior, the port, the malecon, and a birdseye views of the expansive city. Cruising south to the Strait of Magellan and exiting through the Canal Smith provides excellent views of the Sierrra Nevada range, as well as Monte Burney - the ice-capped stratovolcano in Chilean Patagonia and named for rear-admiral James Burney who accompanied Captain Cook on his last two voyages. In Puerto Montt, southern Chile, a traditional feast takes place, with several cows or goats being roasted outdoors over coals. Five naval officers pose on horseback. In Valparaíso the band and crew of the ironclad battleship of the Chilean Navy "Capitán Prat" performed in front of the Plaza of Arms. In Lima, Peru, a grand welcome and official ceremony takes place, during which the now infamous national flag of Germany is displayed, and the President of Peru, ?"scar Raymundo Benavides Larrea, pays a visit onboard. From Lima the sailors had the privilege of an inland rail journey across the Brazilian border to Rio Branco. In these remote regions they witnessed authentic South American custom, encountering gauchos and llamas, also passing a ruined stone village. Continuing north along the Pacific coast, stops were made at San Pedro in Los Angeles, then San Francisco where mayor Angelo Joseph Rossi welcomed the ship's commanding crew, and where the rigid airship flew overhead, possibly USS Macon (ZRS-5). The cruise continued north as far as Vancouver, British Columbia, capturing a view with Stanley Park and Grouse Mountain, and also a walk on the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The return voyage included stops in Acapulco and Taxco in Mexico, the cadets being granted with an inland journey to view the Popocatépetl and Popocatépetl volcanos, and attending a Charro Days Festival in Xochimilco. Following a few views from American cities Houston and Charleston, the album concludes with four photographs of La Guardia and the coast of Spain.Karlsruhe was a German light cruiser, the second member of the Königsberg class, and was operated between 1929 and April 1940 by two German navies, the Reichsmarine and the Kriegsmarine, including service in World War II. Like her sisters, Karlsruhe served as a training cruiser for naval cadets from 1930-35, making world cruises, and between each cruise, conducting exercises with the rest of the fleet in German waters. Günther Lütjens served as the ship's commander from September 1934 to September 1935. During the Spanish Civil War (17 July 1936 - 1 April 1939), she joined the non-intervention patrols off the Spanish coast. Capitán Prat was a unique ironclad battleship of the Chilean Navy built in the late 1880s and completed in 1890. Armed with a main battery of four 9.4 in (240 mm) guns in four single turrets, Capitán Prat was the first battleship in the world to be equipped with an electrical system. She was built in the La Seyne dockyard in France, and commissioned into the Chilean fleet in 1891. Foreign navies tried to purchase the ship twice before the outbreak of wars, including an American attempt in 1898 and a Japanese offer in 1903. Capitán Prat served in the fleet for about ten years, until she was disarmed in accordance with a treaty signed with Argentina intended to stop a naval arms race between the two countries. The ship returned to service, however, and remained on active duty with the fleet until 1926, when she was reduced to a coastal defense ship. In 1928-1930, she was used as a submarine tender, and in 1935, she was disarmed and used as a training ship for engineers. She remained in the Navy's inventory until 1942, when she was sold for scrap.. Very Good.
