Autograph musical quotation signed "Karol Szymanowski" from his Symphonie concertante (Symphony No. 4, Op. 60)

Notated on a partial album leaf, ca. 73 x 149 mm. Signed and dated London, October 29, 1934 in dark blue ink. Two measures on one staff with treble clef, 3/4 time signature, and a key signature of one flat. Autograph titling ("Symphonie Concertante") to upper margin. With the autograph signature of noted German soprano Ria Ginster (1898-1985) in black ink to verso. Slightly worn and soiled; verso with minor wear, brief annotation in pencil, and remnants of transparent tape to margins. . The Symphonie Concertante, for solo piano and orchestra, was premiered in Pozna on October 9, 1932, with the composer at the piano. Although he dedicated it to the great pianist Anton Rubinstein, Szymanowski intended to perform the piece himself, on as many stages as possible, to earn money. He therefore "shaped the solo part with a view to his own performance capabilities, adjusting it to his hand; hence, the work is very different from the typical 'pianism' of contemporary concertos – those by Maurice Ravel or Prokofiev. In order to add brilliance, somewhat lacking in the piano part, Szymanowski increased the role of the orchestra, in a colourful and impressive style... so that the soloistsÂ’ figures are constantly being supplemented and “ornamented” by the picturesque and brilliant timbres of the symphonic ensemble, to a degree which goes beyond the usual convention of the concerto form and the idea of a dialogue." "Symphonie concertante for piano and orchestra op. 60." karolszymanowski.pl. Szymanowski, a noted Polish pianist and composer, was much influenced by the music of his countryman Chopin, Polish folk music, and a number of other composers including Strauss, Debussy and Ravel.

America and Alfred Stieglitz: A Collective Portrait

New York: Doubleday, Doran, 1934. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, stated. Very good in a good unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing light to moderate edgewear, shallow chipping; tape repairs to the upper front panel, rear flap detatched but present. Boards show light soiling. This copy inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper by contributor William Carlos Williams to Katherine Johns, whom Williams employed as a typist and informal secretary; in his Autobiography, Williams refers to her work on his manuscripts for In The American Grain and Voyage to Pagany, among other works. It's possible that Johns worked on the manuscript for Williams's contribution to this volume as well, although there is no firm evidence for that supposition. If there were, we'd up the price. In any event, a solid copy of the much less common trade edition, signed by an important contributor, with a nice association.

        Why Didn't They Ask Evans?

The Crime Club, London 1934 - HARDBACK - The book is in very good condition with no fading to the orange boards or to the spine. Internally the inner pages are very clean with no signs of foxing or finger marks, with the text free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The dust wrapper is original to the book and in very good condition. When we purchased this title, there was light unnecesary restoration to the spine tips and to the corners of the front and rear flaps. We decided to have this restoration removed by a paper archivist. The end result is a dust wrapper with shallow chipping to the tips and to the corners. The original red lettering to the spine has faded to a yellow over the years with the printed price of 7'6net clearly present to the spine. The dust wrapper is the correct first edition, first impression with the printed reviews of Murder on the Orient Express present to the back panel. A lovely example of a very scarce golden age Agatha Christie title. Please view the numerous scans. [Attributes: First Edition]

30 meist eigenh. Briefe mit U. bzw. Initialen und 4 eh. (Bild-)Postkarten mit U. bzw. Initialen.

Verschiedene Orte - 1934 bis 1942. Zusammen 54¼ SS. auf 40 Bll. (Qu.-)8vo bis gr.-4to. Die Karten mit eh. Adresse. (a. d. Br. v. 14. April 1940). (a. d. Br. v. 9. Juli 1940). – „[.] (a. d. Br. v. 12. Mai 1942). - Erstausgabe, Exemplare in sehr guter Erhaltung

Photograph Album - 1934 Arctic Cruise of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, USCGC Northland

Arctic Circle, 1934. Photograph Album. Very Good. This album (approximately 8" x 14") contains approximately 150 photographs of the USCGC Northaland and its crew while on its annual Arctic cruise to Point Barrow, Alaska in 1934. The leather attractive leather 'logalbum" cover features a multi-color relief illustration of the Northland at sea. Photographs range in size between approximately 2.5" x 3.5" to 4" x 6". The USCGC Northland was a gunboat especially designed for Arctic waters; it was the last cruising cutter equipped with a tall-masted sailing rig. Each year between 1929 and 1938, the ship patrolled the Bering Sea performing a myriad of federal functions including gathering military intelligence, enforcing the law, transporting teachers and Public Health Service personnel, surveying coastlines, etc. The ship later served with distinction in World War II, capturing the first naval prize of the war and sinking a German submarine in the Davis Strait, and successfully assaulting a small German radio station in Greenland. Following the war, the ship was sold as scrap but instead was purchased by Zionists and use to transport Jewish refugees to Palestine. In 1948 she was named Eliat and became the first flagship of the fledgling Israeli Navy. The photographs in this album document the voyage beginning with the ship's departure from Seattle; its inland passage through British Columbia and Alaska; sailing through the Aleutians; crossing the Arctic Circle, stops at Mount Ballyhoo, Dutch Harbor, Nome, Unalaskan, and Fox Inlet on Somerset Island (which happens to be the setting of Peter Freuchen's classic novel and film, Eskimo). Some of the photos include: the Northland under sail, the wardroom, the bridge with an able seaman at the helm, rowing the ship's walrus skin boat, the radio room, deck scenes, the ship icebound near Nome, setting the mainsail, view from the crow's nest, street scenes of Nome, firing a machine gun, firing the port and starboard guns on the 4th of July, and more. The album and photographs are in nice shape. One of the album closure snaps has been repaired. Some photographs have been removed from the album.

        The Listerdale Mystery

London: Collins,, 1934. and Other Stories. Octavo. Original maroon cloth, silver lettered spine. Spine rolled, small pale mark on front cover, edges of book block and some margins foxed. First edition, first impression, with a distinguished provenance: from the library of E. T. "Ned" Guymon, Jr (1900-1983), with his striking bookplate. Guymon was one of the foremost 20th century collectors of crime fiction, a large collection of his papers and documents being held at Bowling Green State University, Ohio. "[Christie's] best short stories are 'Philomel Cottage' and 'Accident', both to be found in a volume entitled The Listerdale Mystery and Other Stories" (Ellery Queen, Queen's Quorum, 1953, p. 77). Eric Quayle makes an interesting assertion, that "the name 'James Bond' was first used by Agatha Christie for her unwilling sleuth in the 'Rajah's Emerald', one of the stories collected in The Listerdale Mystery" (The Collector's Book of Detective Fiction p. 120); although, of course, Fleming took the name James Bond from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide to the birds of the West Indies. A remarkably bright copy; without the dust jacket but all pre-war Collins Christies are scarce in dust jacket and this title is one of the two or three scarcest of them all.

Autograph Letter in Japanese calligraphic script to Lou Gehrig, from "the Children of Japan"

[Japan, 1934. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Fine. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934, joined by Babe Ruth, his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor, intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms, and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement. The present letter, written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan," is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother, with whom he was very close. Translation of the presentation letter: Dear Mr. Gehrig: "I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So, I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking, but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought, I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono,' not-so-fine a thing, a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you, Mr. Gehrig, 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November." [With:] 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library. From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick, a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother, Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip (which sold for over $500,000 at auction in 2011), a signed baseball, and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany, N.J., son of Ruth Martin Quick, a friend of Lou Gehrig
