Tel Aviv : Satira 1934 - Original paper wrappers. 8vo, 16 pages, 24 cm. In Hebrew. The title translates to "A Tel Aviv Haggadah: A Tri-fold Holiday for Pesach, Muharram, and the Jubilee of the City. " This haggadah is a brilliantly illustrated piece of satire that combines a parody of life in Tel Aviv and Israel, with the traditional Passover haggadah. Reflecting Israel's various religious and non-religious communities, the haggadah references the Muslim holy month of Muharram, in which Sunni Muslims fast in honor of God and Musa's victory over the Pharaoh. The secular Tel-Avivian also factors prominently into this Haggadah, celebrating the city's 50th anniversary while images of Pharaoh are replaced with Hitler and the British colonial authorities in Palestine. We found particularly poingient the Tel-Avivi rendition of Dayenu ("If he had delivered us from the Third Reich ") , complete with an illustration of a British officer whipping a new Jewish immigrant with the caption " and they burdened us with Ministers of Taxes. " The haggadah also features satirical advertisements. Subjects: Passover -- Humor. Jewish wit and humor. Israeli wit and humor. Satire, Hebrew -- Israel. Israeli wit and humor. Jewish wit and humor. Passover. Satire, Hebrew. OCLC lists 3 copies (Harvard, Yale, Stanford) , none outside New England and California. Pages are slightly edgeworn and wrappers are lightly soiled with small pen notation on margin of cover. Overall Very Good Condition. (Hag-18-16) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Negro: Anthology made by Nancy Cunard: 1931-1933

London: Nancy Cunard at Wishart & Co., 1934 - First Edition. Presentation copy; inscribed by Cunard on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To V.F. Calverton, whose own Negro Anthology is the ideal approach to Negro literature in America. Nancy Cunard." Publisher's cloth frayed at the extremities; stain at the top of the front endpapers and the first few leaves; a very good copy. A meaningful association: Calverton's Anthology of American Negro Literature was published in 1929. The radical Calverton (pseudonym of George Goetz), a Marxist critic and writer, was born into very modest circumstances in Baltimore. Cunard, raised in a considerably more prosperous and genteel environment, led a highly unconventional life as a political and social activist, as well as becoming a publisher and champion of avant-garde literature and art. This book was printed in an edition of 1000 copies, but apparently a large number of unsold copies were destroyed in the Blitz. Inscribed copies are very uncommon.         Seven Gothic Tales. With an Introduction by Dorothy Canfield. Illustrations by Majeska.

New York, Smith & Haas, 1934. Original full cloth with gilt title to spine and front board. In the original papercovered cardboard slipcase with printed title-label to front. A perfect copy, in mint condition. Beautifully illustrated with Majeska's magnificent and charming Art Deco-colourplates.. First illustrated edition, from the same year as the true first edition, of Blixen's first book, her proper debut and "the most astonishing and perhaps greatest literary work of art from between the wars". This literary masterpiece was originally published in America, where it also appeared in a illustretaed edition the same year, then in the UK later the same year, and in a re-written edition in Danish in 1935. The splendid illustrated edition appeared in a limited number of 1010 (999 for sale) copies, of which this number 264. The great American illustrator Majeska has put her infallible style to use in this magnificently illustrated edition of Blixen's masterpiece, and the outcome is an utterly charming book. Majeska was a very popular book illustrator in the 1930'ies, and two of the books for which she created the illustrations were chosen in 1930 by the Graphic Art Society as among the year's 50 books most distinguished for external charm. "And it is rumored", says a newspaper article from that same year, "that she is getting higher prices for her work than any other book illustrator in New York."The legendary Danish writer, Karen Blixen-Finecke (pseudonym: Isak Dinesen) (1885-1962), was a Danish baroness, who married her cousin, the Swedish Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, in 1914. They soon moved to Africa, where they ran a coffee-farm near Nairobi, and the happiest years of Blixen's life were spent here (she used to say: "Africa made me"). She divorced her husband, who was cheating on her and gave her syphilis, in 1922, and in 1932 she moved back to Denmark after the farm had gone bankrupt and her lover, Denys Finch-Hatton, had died in a plane-crash. She spent the remaining 30 years of her life in Denmark, where she died a legendary writer. After she had returned to Denmark, she began preparing some of the stories she had been working on in Africa for publication. She used the pseudonym Isak Dinesen (the name Isak is derived from the Hebrew Itzhak, which means "he laughed", and Dinesen was her maiden name) so that the public would think she was a man - in order to be taken seriously as a writer. Although written under a male pseudonym, the book was still not met with instant appreciation. Karen Blixen then offered the tales to the editor Constant Huntington at Putnam's in England, but he turned them down; luckily, her brother was well connected and within two years, his acquaintance, the American writer Dorythy Canfield (who wrote the introduction for the first edition), succeeded in having the book of stories published by Robert Haas and Harrison Smith (later Random House) in America. Blixen's first book became a success, was elected Book-of-the-Month-Club, and was published by Putnam's later the same year. It established her reputation and laid the foundations for her further writings, financially as well as literally. She translated the tales into Danish and published them thus in 1935. "In the middle of the thirties the most astonishing and perhaps greatest literary work of art from between the wars landed in Denmark - via the USA: Isak Dinesen's "Sy Fantastiske Fortællinger" (1935), re-written in Danish by the author after the English-language original, "Seven Gothic Tales" (1934). [...] This book, as well as the ones to come, was received with excitement, astonishment and respect; but it was not until the war, and especially after the war, that the particular actuality of the writings was fully realized - and this was to become of literary importance" (Politiken's History of Danish Literature - own translation).Karen Blixen's first book, the collections of Gothic Tales, were quite unusual at the time. They take place about a hundred years before the time in which they were written and they tend towards the gloomy and the grotesque. They were meant to startle, but not fright, the reader, and they contain many magical and supernatural elements. In many ways the stories resemble those of "A Thousand and One Nights".Since her breakthrough with "Seven Gothic Tales", Blixen has been considered a writer of the greatest importance, and execized a great influence upon writers and cultural personas of the generations to come - many authors recognize her as a direct source of inspiration. Several of her novels have been filmatized, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize twice, she was elected honorary member of "The American Academy of Arts and Letters" (1957), and her portrait is printed on the Danish 50 kr. notes. She is the most famous of all modern Danish writers, and the only one of international fame

Octavo, original green pebbled cloth with numerous full-page plates by the author. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Phyllis Bergen with my compliments- a poor atonement for ruined eyesight Roger T. Peterson." The recipient Phyllis Bergen is thanked by Peterson in the preface of this volume. This book was most likely presented upon publication as a thank you to the recipient. Fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the spine and front panel. Roger Tory Peterson, one of the world's greatest naturalists, received every major award for ornithology, natural science, and conservation as well as numerous honorary degrees, medals, and citations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Peterson Identification System has been called the greatest invention since binoculars. "Many people have noted that Peterson changed the world because he made nature accessible to the general public. Before his Guide, bird watching was the province of the few, often done with bird remains in hand" (Eirik A.T. Blom). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Smith Ely Jelliffe Collection of Medical Offprints (circa 1890-1934)

[New York] 1934 - A large collection of medical offprints and monographs, including bound-in and laid-in correspondence and notes, assembled by the distinguished American physician, author, and editor Smith Ely Jelliffe. A practicing neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst based in New York City, Jelliffe was a pioneer in the emerging field of psychosomatic medicine, and is best known today as the father of psychoanalysis in America. A prolific author and translator, he edited the influential *Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease* from 1902 to 1944, co-founded the nonorthodox *Psychoanalytic Review* in 1913, and co-founded and edited the *Nervous and Mental Disease Monograph Series*. He maintained a close personal and professional correspondence with both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung after their historic break, and several other leading figures throughout the world in both Freudian and Jungian circles. Also a book collector, Jelliffe built up an important private library of books, journals, and offprints which he used for his research and the many translations of the serials that he owned and edited. The collection consists of 204 bound volumes containing well over 8,000 offprints and monographs of European and American works in neuroscience, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, many of which are presentation copies inscribed to Jelliffe. Also included throughout the volumes are many folded large-format journal articles and shorter articles and clippings laid-down on bound-in sheets. The bulk of the papers date from the first quarter of the 20th Century (about 1905-1934). Among the presentation copies are several Inscribed by some of Jelliffe's best known colleagues, including Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, Heinz Hartmann, and Otto Rank; and several other leading international figures such as John H. Northrop (co-winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), the Austrian neurologist Otto Marburg, American neurologist Bernard Sachs, and the American cultural anthropologist Alfred L. Kroeber. Also included are several papers with warm Inscriptions of gratitude from prominent Brazilian colleagues mentored by Jelliffe: Arthur Ramos (an important cultural historian of Brazil's Negro culture), Juliano Moreira and Durval Marcondes (founders of scientific psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Brazil). Other papers that are further illustrative of the diversity and scope of the collection include *Traum und Existenz* *nscribed by the distinguished Swiss psychiatrist and phenomenologist Ludwig Binswanger, and an Inscribed copy of Alfred Korzybski's influential treatise *Time-Binding*.Most of the papers are in German and English, followed by others in French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and several other languages. Among the German papers are many important papers on psychoanalysis, homosexuality, transvestitism, and transsexualism, including at least eight papers (one Inscribed) by the great German-Jewish psychiatrist Arthur Kronfeld (who studied under Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Research in Berlin), and several early papers by Alfred Adler, Wilhelm Reich, Felix Boehm, and Carl Muller-Braunschweig. Also bound into a few selected volumes are original letters and copies of Jelliffe's accompanying correspondence. These include original letters from two important American physical chemists: Wilder D. Bancroft and Joseph E. Cohn (who was responsible for a blood fractionation project that saved thousands of lives in World War Two). All together the collection roughly divides into the principal subject areas of Jelliffe's professional career: Neurology and the Nervous System (over 50 volumes); Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (over 20 volumes); Psychoanalysis (26 volumes); Dementia, Paranoia, Psychoses, Schizophrenia (about 30 volumes); Endocrinology (about 20 volumes); etc., along with several related sub-disciplines. Nearly all have Jelliffe's typed or manuscript table of contents and author indexes laid-down onto the front and back endleaves, along with his [Attributes: Hard Cover]

And Quite Flows the Don [Signed]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the SCARCE first American edition, first printing (some foxing to the gutters and spine edges, some toning to the board edges), in a Very Good example of the even scarcer dust jacket (some modest chipping to the spine ends and flap turn corners, a few short closed tears, minor soiling to the white rear spine panel, general modest edge wear), SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV on a small card affixed to the title page which signature he has dated "26xi65" with a small underscore. First published in Russian as "The Quiet Don", the work was issued in serial form from 1928 to 1940. While the portion of the novel (being only the first half of the book) was published in English translation in 1934 as "And Quite Flows the Don", the entire work was not published in English until 1940. This 1934 partial publication is itself quite uncommon, especially in the dust jacket. The novel tells the tale of the Cossacks living in the Don River Valley during the turbulent early Twentieth Century, a period which saw World War I, the Russian Revolution(s), the Russian Civil War, and the Bolsheviks' harsh repression of the Cossacks. Quite well received, the work became one of the most-read Russian novels of all time. In awarding him the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy, in support of its choice, spoke of "the artistic power and integrity with which, in his epic of the Don, Sholokhov has given expression to a historic phase in the life of the Russian people" and the Presentation Speech stated: "With magnificent realism the book portrays the unique character of the Cossack, the traditional mixture of cavalryman and farmer, with instincts that seem to conflict with one another but which nevertheless allow themselves to be welded together to form a firmly co-ordinated whole. There is no glamorization. The coarse and savage streaks in the Cossack temperament are displayed openly; nothing is hidden or glossed over, but, at the same time, one is aware of an undercurrent of respect for all that is human." The novel was three times adapted to film (1931, 1958, and 2006). In our experience, Sholokhov's signature is rather scarce and copies of this 1934 publication of the first portion of the novel complete with the dust jacket and in collectable condition are uncommon to the market. A Very Good copy of the first American publication of any portion of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov's masterpiece for which he won the 1965 Noble Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV. QUITE SCARCE.
