And Quite Flows the Don [Signed]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the SCARCE first American edition, first printing (some foxing to the gutters and spine edges, some toning to the board edges), in a Very Good example of the even scarcer dust jacket (some modest chipping to the spine ends and flap turn corners, a few short closed tears, minor soiling to the white rear spine panel, general modest edge wear), SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV on a small card affixed to the title page which signature he has dated "26xi65" with a small underscore. First published in Russian as "The Quiet Don", the work was issued in serial form from 1928 to 1940. While the portion of the novel (being only the first half of the book) was published in English translation in 1934 as "And Quite Flows the Don", the entire work was not published in English until 1940. This 1934 partial publication is itself quite uncommon, especially in the dust jacket. The novel tells the tale of the Cossacks living in the Don River Valley during the turbulent early Twentieth Century, a period which saw World War I, the Russian Revolution(s), the Russian Civil War, and the Bolsheviks' harsh repression of the Cossacks. Quite well received, the work became one of the most-read Russian novels of all time. In awarding him the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy, in support of its choice, spoke of "the artistic power and integrity with which, in his epic of the Don, Sholokhov has given expression to a historic phase in the life of the Russian people" and the Presentation Speech stated: "With magnificent realism the book portrays the unique character of the Cossack, the traditional mixture of cavalryman and farmer, with instincts that seem to conflict with one another but which nevertheless allow themselves to be welded together to form a firmly co-ordinated whole. There is no glamorization. The coarse and savage streaks in the Cossack temperament are displayed openly; nothing is hidden or glossed over, but, at the same time, one is aware of an undercurrent of respect for all that is human." The novel was three times adapted to film (1931, 1958, and 2006). In our experience, Sholokhov's signature is rather scarce and copies of this 1934 publication of the first portion of the novel complete with the dust jacket and in collectable condition are uncommon to the market. A Very Good copy of the first American publication of any portion of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov's masterpiece for which he won the 1965 Noble Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV. QUITE SCARCE.

R A R E. A MAJOR FOLIO SIZE BOOK WITH CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHICS MAJOR PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF PRE-1937 JAPANESE DESTRUCTION OF ANCIENT CHINA: This stunning work was done just two and a half years prior to Japanese systematic destruction of ancient China. . This is a major resource on all provinces of China, with a chapter on each, showing products, photographs of the sights and useful description of the art manufactures & art works, natural & historic beauty, many fold out statistical charts, a fabulous guide to the "real" China. By and large, the most comprehensive single photographic resource on the whole country ever done just before the Sino-Japanese war of 1937. . A SCARCE PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD ! This is an important photographic record of China prior to the mass destruction of coastal & interior Chinese cities by the Japanese. A substantial part of ancient China was permanently damaged and destroyed from 1937-1945. In that regard, we believe this is an important and historic photographic record of what old China looked like. *** THE CONTENTS: Per the foreword as written by the publishers: "We seek to present in the following pages a valuable collection of materials illustrative of the widely divergent aspects of Chinese life and manners and conducive to a sound understanding of the Middle Kingdom." . This book is arranged by province order, some 20 in all. In addition, a separate matching chapter on Manchuria, Sinkiang, Jehol, Chahar, Suiyan, Sikiang, Tibet & Mongolia is at the end. . Each chapter begins with a color photo of a famous place, followed by full description of the area, its mountains, rivers and physical features, main cities, capital, important buildings, famous and scenic spots, gardens, pagodas, temples, and lavishly illustrated with many b.w. photographs. *** THE PHOTOGRAPHER: YUAN-HENG CHANG, PHOTOGRAPHS ARE IN THIS WORK: . During his sojourn he traveled extensively throughout China contributing his photographs to this work as well as CHINA TODAY, CHINA'S SCENIC BEAUTY, CHINA'S SCULPTURAL BEAUTY and CHINA'S ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY. Later he became the publisher and editor-in-chief of Liang Yu Hua Pao [Young Companion]. In 1948 Chang moved to Hong Kong. . Other photographs by T.S. Leung, P. Auyoung & W. Szeto. *** FOLDING APPENDICES: This work contains 10 folding charts [maps] at the rear of the text. Such things as population count; count of foreign population; list of roads, railroads, trams, freight cars, trucks, buses, bicycles, cars and other modes of transportation, road mileage; list of rivers, distance; telegraph service to each province; educational statistics, number and location of schools; list of natural products, production, agricultural products by city and type of product; comparison of China's product production vs. foreign production. Excellent statistical study, with current numbers. *** QUAINT ADVERTS: There are a number of period "quaint" advertisements at the rear several with both English & Chinese texts. The adverts promote Chinese-American publications, photo engraving [with English & Chinese], Sincere Company, with its 47 branches, New Asia Hotel, dental cream, cigarettes, steamship company, jewelers, wall paper, furnishings, and many others. Some with lovely photographs. *** SIZE: This book is a large folio, 22 x 33 cm., and ca. 5.5 cm. thick. *** LARGE AND HEAVY ITEM: This a large and heavy item, therefore extra and appropriate packing & shipping costs will apply. *** Color scans can be sent by email.         Tender Is The Night.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1934 - First edition. Octavo, original green cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper with a full page inscription, For Harry Joe Brown - late of the 17th Infantry Brigade. Wounded in Hollywood 1920-1940. - from his fellow dough boy F Scott Fitzgerald Encino, 1939." The recipient Harry Joe Brown was a Hollywood producer, who Fitzgerald noted meeting in late 1939: "Somewhere around this time [September 1939] Harry Joe Brown called me over to Twentieth Century Fox on a Sonja Heine picture" (letter to the Berg-Allenberg Agency, 23 February 1940). Fitzgerald had been contracted as a writer by Metro Goldwyn Meyer Studios in the July of 1937, initially for six months. His contract was then extended for another year, but when this lapsed in December 1938 MGM did not renew it. Over the next two years, Fitzgerald freelanced for numerous studios on a number of films, including Everything Happens at Night for which Brown was an associate producer. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An excellent near fine example in a very good first issue dust jacket with some fading and chips to the spine. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in a friend's copy of Tender Is the Night, "If you liked The Great Gatsby, for God's sake read this. Gatsby was a tour de force but this is a confession of faith." Set in the South of France in the decade after World War I, Tender Is the Night is the story of a brilliant and magnetic psychiatrist named Dick Diver; the bewitching, wealthy, and dangerously unstable mental patient, Nicole, who becomes his wife; and the beautiful, harrowing ten-year pas de deux they act out along the border between sanity and madness. Tender Is the Night is also the most intensely, even painfully, autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; it smolders with a dark, bitter vitality because it is so utterly true. This account of a caring man who disintegrates under the twin strains of his wife's derangement and a lifestyle that gnaws away at his sense of moral values offers an authorial cri de coeur, while Dick Diver's downward spiral into alcoholic dissolution is an eerie portent of Fitzgerald's own fate. F. Scott Fitzgerald literally put his soul into Tender Is the Night, and the novel's lack of commercial success upon its initial publication in 1934 shattered him. He would die six years later without having published another novel, and without knowing that Tender Is the Night would come to be seen as perhaps his masterpiece. In Mabel Dodge Luhan's words, it raised him to the heights of "a modern Orpheus." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century.         The Challenge to Liberty.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1934. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Occasional underlining in pencil. Spine a touch faded and rolled, extremities gently scuffed, a few pale markings to the front board. A very good copy in the spine-toned dust jacket with a small tear to the loss of one letter on rear panel. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Philip D Carroll, with the kind regards of Herbert Hoover". Hoover made a name for himself in the early years of the First World War by organising aid shipments to mainland Europe, working from an office in London; when the US entered the conflict in 1917 Woodrow Wilson appointed him to run the United States Food Administration, which post-war became the American Relief Administration. Veteran aid worker Carroll was appointed to lead the ARA mission to Russia in 1921. "In his own words, Herbert Hoover viewed the ARA relief efforts as 'an opportunity to point out to the Russian people themselves that their economic system is hopeless.' However, to altogether attribute perhaps the greatest famine relief operation in the history of mankind to ulterior motives would be unfair to the man who on his own initative ultimately saved ten million Russian lives" (Asgarov, Reporting from the Frontlines of the First Cold War, pp. 135-38).

        Playing the Like.

London: Chapman and Hall, Ltd., 1934. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Bernard Darwin Jan 1935." An excellent copy with some information regarding the book pasted to the inside gutter in the very rare dust jacket with a few closed tears. Rare in the original dust jacket and signed. It is said Bernard Darwin invented golf writing as we know it today. He was the first golf writer to transcribe facts and figures into a branch of literary journalism and he did so with style, wit and an ability to turn a phrase. Born September 7, 1876 in Downe, Kent, Darwin's grandfather was Charles Darwin, the great naturalist, who proposed the theory of evolution. Bernard never trained as a journalist. After graduating from Cambridge with a law degree, he became a barrister in London for a few years. But Darwin was unhappy in his work and in 1908, he gave up his career in law. "Once Darwin dipped his toe into golf writing, the reports he produced regularly for The Times of London over a forty-five year period and his ruminative essays for the weekly Country Life possessed a quality that no one else has ever approached," Herbert Warren Wind wrote, "We are simply very lucky that a man of his high talent was so smitten by golf that he wrote endlessly about it."         AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF THE LAST EMPEROR OF CHINA & MANCHURIA WITH THE JAPANES

[Tokyo ? 1934]. An original b.w. photograph, 9 x 7 inches,or. 23 x 18 cm, very good, issued by Acme News Pictures, N.Y.,. glossy, clear, bright not faded. R A R E ORIGINAL PHOTO. A RARE PHOTOGRAPH OF THE LAST EMPEROR OF MANCHURIA & CHINA A fine photograph of the two famous rulers, likely excecuted in Tokyo, both ride in the royal horse-drawn carriage, with two standing attendants riding at the rear, with mounted Japanese officers, and Japanese soldiers in the background. P'u Yi is facing left, as he salutes, or waves to the camera while Hirohito faces forward, both are dressed in elaborate military uniforms, of equal status, both wear plumed hats. The verso of the photo has a yellow mimeo note glued down. The text reads: "IMPERIAL POMP The two Emperors of the Orie- nt ride together. A highlight of the Visit of Emperor Kang Teh [sic for P'u], of Manchukuo to Japan. A brilliant review of the flower of the Japanese army on Yoyogi Prade ground. In the suburbs of Tokyo on April 9th [1934]. Instead of review- ing the troops on horseback, the two Emperors rode together in a horse-drawn carriage, as shown." A marvelous historical photograph of P'u's only visit to Japan. In an effort to get the Manchurian people to accept Japanese rule under their colonial master plan, Japan made P'u Yi their "Puppet Emper- or" of Manchoukuo. Visits to Japan, pomp and ceremony were just part of that effort, in the end the people of Manchuria rightfully rejected P'u Yi as a "Japanese dog." * Original photographs of P'u Yi are exceptionally R A R E ! * Color photos can be sent by email. Wang Ching-Wei [1883-1944] also know as Wang Jingwei, born as Wang Zhaoming (Wang Chao-ming), but widely known by his pen name "Jingwei," was a Chinese politician. He was initially a member of the left wing of the Kuomintang [KMT], but later became increasingly anti-communist after his efforts to collaborate with the Chinese Communist Party [CCP] ended in political failure. His political orientation veered sharply to the right later in his career after he joined the Japanese. . Wang was a close associate of Sun Yat-sen for the last twenty years of Sun's life. After Sun's death Wang engaged in a political struggle with Chiang Kai-shek for control over the Kuomintang, but lost. Wang remained inside the Kuomintang, but continued to have disagreements with Chiang until the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, after which he accepted an invitation from the Japanese Empire to form a Japanese-supported collaborationist government in Nanjing. Wang served as the head of state for this Japanese puppet government until he died, shortly before the end of World War II. Although he is still regarded as an important contributor in the Xinhai Revolution, his collaboration with the Imperial Japanese is a subject of academic debate, and the typical narratives often regard him as a traitor in the War of Resistance.         Bréviaire des échecs

xii+318 pages with diagrams. Small octavo (7" x 4 3/4") bound in orange cloth with gilt lettering in black label to spine and black lettering to red label to front cover. Inscribed to Julius du Mont. First edition. This work is an introductory book on chess written by Xavier Tartakover and published in 1934 and now considered a classic. Tartakover drafted the Breviary after its best period of activity, which has earned him the title of International Grand Master in 1950. The book has a strong focus on openings, chess theory; however, the playful tone of the Breviary not only makes it accessible to novice players but also inimitable and distracting.Julius du Mont (December 15, 1881, Paris â€" April 7, 1956, Hastings, England) was a pianist, piano teacher, chess player, journalist, editor and writer. He studied music at the Frankfurt Conservatoire and at Heidelberg, and became a concert pianist. He emigrated to England as a young man and became a successful piano teacher. Among his pupils was Edna Iles. He settled in London and also gained a reputation as a strong chess player. He won club and county chess championships in the period leading up to World War I, and showed his mastery of the English language by writing a manual on the Lewis gun. After the war, chess writing took up more and more of his time. Perhaps his most famous work was 500 Master Games of Chess (1952), written in collaboration with Savielly Tartakower.Condition:Inscribed on the half title page. Corners bumped, scattered foxing to preliminary leaves, some internal soiling, modern cloth with original wrapper laid on front cover, slightly scuffed else a very good copy of a very unique association copy.

Contains 11 large sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 9.5" x 11" affixed to stiff gray paper with captions on two photos. Album is very good or better with toning on the page edges and a few photos have been removed with near fine or better photographs. An album of photographs from Nazareth House, an orphanage in Plymouth in the United Kingdom in 1935. The photos appear to be taken as a form of promotion displaying the rooms of the orphanage as well as the girls who lived there. Throughout the album are staged photographs of tables set for breakfast, rows of perfectly made beds, the chapel, and a large classroom. Towards the end of the album the girls are featured in class and playing outside. One photo shows a group of little girls dressed as fairies and another shows some of the girls with a nun chaperone looking out in to the water that surrounded the grounds. A group photo shows all the girls who were housed at the orphanage in 1934.Nazareth House, founded in the 1870s, was operated by the Sisters of Nazareth, sometimes referred to as the Poor Sisters of Nazareth. They had orphanages throughout England, all of which were called Nazareth House, and were home to not only abandoned girls but also those thought to be uncontrollable or accused of petty crimes. The girls were taught basic lessons including arithmetic, reading, and writing, as well as the "feminine arts" of sewing and knitting. In the late 1990s the sisters were accused of child abuse and of sending 111 children to Australia to "spread Catholicism."A collection of large, arresting photographs of a girl's orphanage in the 1930s. .

Geroicheskij Pochod Chelyuskintsev; Heroic Campaign of Chelyuskin.]

????-?????? (Ogiz-Izogiz), ?????? (Moscow) 1934 - First edition. Complete. Printed in only 5,000 copies. In publisher's photographic folder. 145 × 105 mm. One of the earliest publications about Chelyuskin. A collection of 34 photographic postcards, with images showing the episodes of the Chelyuskin expedition, the Artic voyage of the steamship that stuck in ice, the rescue of the passengers and crew by airplane, and the celebration of their homecoming. The story became one of the most glorified events in 1930s Stalinist Russia, and it was mythologized as much as the British expeditions of Shackleton and Scott. The official professional photographers and cameramen of the expedition were Petr Novitzky, and Arkadi Shafran (1907-1983), who also made a film about the event (Chelyuskin, Heroes of the Arctic; 1934). Some of the photos were also used in the famous photo book "Geroicheskaia Epopeia" published by the Pravda in 1935. The steamship Chelyuskin with the leader of the expedition Otto Yuliyevich Shmidt, the captain Vladimir Ivanovich Voronin, the crew and about hundred of passengers on board started its mission from Murmansk, in August 1933. The expedition's task was to determine the possibility to travel by non-icebreaker through the Northern Maritime Route in a single navigation season. In September 1933 the ship got stuck in pack ice in the Chukchi Sea near Kolyuchin Island and after an unsuccessful rescue attempt by an icebreaker, on 13 February 1934, Chelyuskin was crushed by ice. The members of the expedition managed to escape and landed on a drifting ice floe where they built a makeshift airstrip. The Soviet government had taken measures to rescue people by airplanes thus between March 5 and April 13, 1934 all passengers and crew were evacuated, and in June together with the hero-pilots, led by Anatoly Liapidevsky and Sigizmund Levanevsky arrived to Vladivostok. All passengers of Chelyuskin were awarded medals and the pilots were first in the country to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Despite the failure of the expedition the Soviets considered it successful, as it had proven that an ordinary cargo vessel could voyage through the North-East Passage in one season, thus the Northern Sea Route was officially opened and commercial exploitation began in 1935. Rare, we could not trace any complete set in institutional holdings worldwide. [Bibl.: Parr, M.; Badger, G.: The Photobook: A History. London: Phaidon, 2004. Vol. 1. p. 164.]. Folder artistically restored. Price on cover in ink. In very good condition. The postcards are in mint condition. In publisher's photographic folder First edition. Complete.         Doctor Partridge's Almanack for 1935 (Signed Copy - Inscribed By Gerald Brenan to Augustus John)

London: Chatto & Windus, 1934. First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. Book bound in the original black cloth with gilt tiling to spine. 23.5 × 15cm. xii + 65pp. Full title: Doctor Partridge's Almanack for 1935, with an Account of his Resurrection from the Grave after lying dead in it for 2 Centuries by G. Robinson, Also a Brief Exposition of his Religious & Astrological Teaching by Professor Blish. Collected and Set Forth by George Beaton. This copy has been signed by Gerald Brenan to Welsh artist Augustus John to the ffep, with the addition of George Beaton in pencil under Brenan's name (probably in a different hand). Brenan and John were good friends, and John visited Brenan in his Spanish village home at Yegen. Gerald Brenan's second book (writing as George Beaton). This is a fantasy novelof sorts, andis described on the dustwrapper: "Dr Partridge was the astrologer whose death, it will be remembered, was predicted by Swift. When the time came, Swift published a description of the event. It was in vain that the poor astrologer protested that not only was he still alive but that he had also been alive upon the day in question - no-one believed him. He died in obscurity nineteen years later. In this book Mr Beaton brings Dr Partridge back to life with a philosophy and a message and a prophetic faculty acquired among the dead. It is a fantasy of a curious kind - moving about the figure of the sinister doctor, who advocates with alarmingly plausible arguments the religion and policy he has brought up from the grave. At the end come the prophecies, which are likely to be more exactly fulfilled than most people now imagine." Condition: The book itself is in good plus condition, it has a small split to the head of the spine and some minor bumping to the corners. There is also a little hint of forward lean to the spine. There is some very light foxing to the endpapers but the main body of text is in good clean condition and the binding is secure. The dustwrapper is rather worn, with loss to all corners and and the head and tail of the spine with a tanned spine and signs of overall wear. However, it has not been price-clipped (5s.) and is now within a protective sleeve. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS. MANY THANKS. . Minor spotting to page edges. Internally clean. A very superior copy of a rare book, sadly lacking the rather splendid dustwrapper, but as my accountant has explained to me; beggars can't be choosers.
