Sapphire Mesa": Original typescript of this Western story, with numerous pencil corrections, on 126 pages, approximately 30,000 words. Clipped to page 1 is a pencilled note reading: "Manuscript copy / Published in Masked Rider Western / Written by William H. Stueber and used in magazine as by Orrin Holmer / Owned by us / Not yet elaborated"

449 West 48th Street, New York City 1934 - 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Original Corrected Typescript of Zorro-Like Western Story. This story was originally titled "Phantom of Justice"; its hero bears a resemblance to Johnston McCulley's character Zorro: dressed in black, with a black mask, riding a black stallion, his real persona that of an intelligent, resourceful friend of downtrodden Mexican people, he is known as the Masked Rider, righter of wrongs. The fact that the story was published in The Masked Rider Western pulp magazine, Vol. 1, No. 3, for August 1934, is clearly no coincidence.         THE KING'S MISSAL

Herbert Jenkins Limited [1934]., London - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-312 [313-320: ads], original orange cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, publisher's monogram stamped in black on rear panel. First edition. "Weird thriller of a haunted missal bound in the skin of Philip II's unfaithful mistress, whose spirit still seeks new paramours. Marginal vampirism, when her mummified corpse is briefly revived by blood-rite, thought this may be a hallucination induced by an unscrupulous occultist. Novel is an awkward hybrid of detective and horror genres, the latter elements more effective. Author also wrote the bizarre horror thriller, THE NEW RACE OF DEVILS (1921) under the pseudonym of John Bernard." - Robert Knowlton. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Day, p. 7. Reginald 00979.         Die Pathologisierung des K?nstlers: K?nstlerlegenden der Moderne (Gebundene Ausgabe)von Bettina Gockel (Autor)

Oldenbourg Akademieverlag, 1934. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.         An Illustrated life of Confucius. Late Qing woodblock Edition Kong zi sheng ji Tu

Peiping Civil Press. N. D. [1934?]. SHENGJI TU. (Illustrated Scenes from the Life of the Sage, Confucius). 30x40 cm. chinese tex,t, maps, illustrations, portraits + 105 woodblock prints depicting the life of confucius, in the original chinese sewn binding. protected in later chinese style blue cloth box, with straps and ivory needles. a very good copy. scarce..A recent article by Chun Shum in the 'East Asian Library Journal' (Vol. 10, no. 1) provides a wealth of information on what amounts to an exemplary sub-genre of Chinese illustrated book production. In fact, scenes from the life of the Confucius are, arguably, at the fountainhead of book illustration in China. Illustrations of Confucius' life exist in three media: as paintings, engraved on stone (typically reproduced in collections of rubbings), and as woodblock printed editions. The earliest painted version were probably produced in during the Eastern Han period; three sets of stone engravings are said to exist; and there have been many woodcut editions of the Sage's illustrated life. The earliest printed versions are thought to date to the 13th century, but no such Song editions survive. There are several Ming editions. The quality of the illustrations and of the prints differ greatly. This one is taken fromt blocks that appear to be the best we have seeen. The present work is a late Qing edition, most likely a later printing from the blocks prepared by Kong Xianlan in 1874. This edition is noted and described in Chun Shum's article (pp. 153-55), and the sample illustration reproduced matches the corresponding images in the present work. All 105 images collated by Chun Shum are present, along with the introductory text taken from the biography of Confucius in the 'Shiji'. Quality of paper and printing indicate that this may be a somewhat later impression from Kong's blocks, impossible to date precisely. the impressions are clear and the book is a rich source of the visual imagery - based on earlier, Ming model - produced at the time.. Scanned samples available on request. Confucius - Pictorial works.

Autograph letter signed "Milhaud" to an unidentified male correspondent

The performance to which Milhaud refers probably occured on September 11, 1934 at the Teatro La Fenice as part of the Venice Biennale. The program included the Italian premiere of the Symphonic Suite from Maximilien and other pieces by Berg, Stravinsky, Pizzetti, and Lambert. With the exception of the Berg, each composer conducted his own work. "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove Music Online.. 2 pp. Oblong octavo (ca. 103 x 138 mm.). Dated September 4 [?1934]. In ink on cardstock with "L'Enclos Aix-en-Provence Téléphone 99" printed at upper left corner. In French (with translation). Milhaud writes about an upcoming performance of his symphonic suite from his opera Maximilien, probably at the Venice Biennale. He regrets that his correspondent did not order material for it from Universal Edition, but is nonetheless very happy that "in spite of so many difficulties everything is arranged." He includes information about the suite within quotation marks. "... Because I can do nothing without the material, I have set my departure for Friday, and will be in Venice on Saturday. Here is some information about the suite: 'This symphonic suite comprises the dramatic interludes and the Overture from the opera Maximilien... premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1932. The Suite, performed for the first time in Italy, at the Venice Biennale, comprises 4 interludes (the last of which is a funeral song) and a Finale'... " With several autograph corrections. Slightly worn and soiled.

The leaders of the town agreed to the contract, and the stranger began to play his pipe. The rats came swarming from the buildings and followed him to the River Weser, where they drowned. But when the town leaders refused to make the agreed payment the Pied Piper returned once more to play his pipe. This time, however, it was all the children of the town whom he enchanted and lured away to vanish behind a door in the Koppenberg hill. Robert Browning told the story in his poem The Pied Piper of Hamelin in 1842.Latimore and Haskell, p. 71. Riall, p. 186.

1700 Cocktails From the Man Behind the Bar [Together with] 1800 and all that Drinks - Ancient & Modern

London: William Heinemann, / The St Catherine's Press,, 1934 / 1937. Two works, small octavo. Original green leather, titles to spines gilt. With the illustrated dust jacket. A few advertisement illustrations within. Two newspaper cuttings with cocktail recipes laid in. First work with titles dulled at the spine, and a few minor scuffs to the leather, internally entirely sound and fresh, with the jacket sunned to spine and bears a few chips and tears to the ends and corners, a very good copy overall. The second work in exquisite condition, sound and clean, with the jacket bearing only a few closed tears to the top edge and a few other minor marks, but overall in excellent condition. First editions, first impressions, both of de Fleury's scarce but classic cocktail recipe books presented together with the very scarce dust jackets over the publisher's full leather bindings. At the time de Fleury's 1700 Cocktails was the most comprehensive to be included in one book. The author's note in his follow up volume 1800 and all that reads "This volume, though complete in itself, is intended as a companion to my previous book... the two together forming a complete library of all kinds of drinks through the ages to the present day. Up to now I do not know of any book which gives the formulae and methods of preparation of the drinks that were so popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, and I have therefore traced a good number of these and included them in this volume, as I feel sure there would be a demand for them if people only knew how to prepare them." A handsome pairing, rare thus.

"I am sorry for not having attended the performance of Fiamma. I offer my sincere congratulations on the success that has crowned [your] noble endeavor. "Edges very lightly browned; minor remnants of adhesive to corners of blank verso; envelope slighlty worn.Together with a vintage bust-length photograph of a youngish Mascagni in profile. Ca. 206 x 127 mm. Slightly worn; minor remnants of adhesive to blank verso. La fiamma (1931-3), Respighi's "last and most frequently performed large-scale opera," was first performed at the Opera in Rome on January 23, 1934. John C.G. Waterhouse, et al. in Grove Music Online.Mascagni, distinguished as both a composer and conductor, is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera, L'amico Fritz (1891), consolidated his success with Roman audiences, and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom."

The Old Fashioned Way (Archive including corrected draft screenplay, final screenplay, and signed writer's agreement for the 1934 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount, 1934. Archive for the 1934 film, including a Draft script with holograph corrections, the resulting mimeograph Final script, and signed "Certificate of Authorship," Certificate of Authorship notarized by the County of Los Angeles and signed by each of the film's writers, including J.P. McEvoy, Claude Binyon, Garnett Weston, Lex Neal, Walter DeLeon, Paul Jones, and Ralph Ceder. Based on the story by Charles Bogle (a W.C. Fields pseudonym), "The Old Fashioned Way" follows the story of The Great McGonigle (W.C. Fields) and his rag-tag vaudeville troupe's production of "The Drunkard," a William H. Smith temperance play, as well as the wayward romantic exploits of McGonigle's daugther, Betty. A rare and comedic glimpse into the life of a vaudevillian at the turn of the century, "The Old Fashioned Way" is also somewhat autobiographical in nature. Like McGonigle, Fields himself began his career in vaudeville as a silent juggler, eventually earning the distinction of "world's greatest juggler" and an illustrious career in both silent and early "talkie" films. Fields' "The Great McGonigle" is of course an homage to the famed "The Great Ziegfeld" or Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., a noted impresario of his time and a key player in vaudeville history.
