A Boy's Will, inscribed by the author in 1938

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1934. Second American Edition. Hardcover. This is an exceptional copy of the second American edition of the author?s first published book, inscribed for an English major student following a lecture at her college the month before her graduation. The inscription, inked in blue in four lines on the title page reads: ?Robert Frost | Allegheny College 1938? below the printed title and author?s name. Below the printed publisher name and location is inked: ?for | Janet Fishel?. Janet Fishel?s illustrated bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown, with her name, ostensibly in her own hand, inked, as well as the date ?June, 1938.? Frost?s 5 May 1938 lecture in Allegheny College?s Ford Memorial Chapel on the topic ?How Much is in a Book?? was in connection with formal dedication of a new library room exhibiting a collection of his works. Frost?s lecture audience surely included Janet Fishel, who graduated from Allegheny College in June 1938, and who must have prized this copy, given the superlative condition. This second American edition, published in 1934, was bound in tan linen cloth with a gilt-stamped brown front cover illustration panel (intertwined scythes) and brown spine title panel. The tan dust jacket features an ivy-covered fence post illustration repeated from the title page. Book and jacket are in fine condition. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and no discernible wear. We note a hint of spotting to the top edges of the binding. The contents remain immaculate with no spotting, light age-toning to the fore edge, and minor dust soiling to the top edge. The unclipped dust jacket is beautifully clean with no toning and no spotting, and only fractional wear to the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), the quintessential poetic voice of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and first published in England. When Frost was eleven, his newly widowed mother moved east to Salem, New Hampshire, to resume a teaching career. There Frost swiftly found his poetic voice, infused by New England scenes and sensibilities. Promising as both a student and writer, Frost nonetheless dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard, supporting himself and a young family by teaching and farming. Ironically, it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children ? ?the place to be poor and to write poems? ? that finally catalyzed his recognition as a noteworthy American poet. The manuscript of A Boy?s Will was completed in England and accepted for publication by David Nutt on 1 April 1913. ?Yeats pronounced the poetry ?the best written in America for some time? and Frost received ?two extraordinary tributes in the Nation and the Chicago Dial and a superb review in the Academy.? (ANB) A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the English publication of Frost?s second book, North of Boston, in 1914, after which ?Frost?s reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America.? Accolades met his return to America at the end of 1914 and by 1917 a move to Amherst ?launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever ?subjects? he pleased at a congenial college? and ?barding around,? his term for ?saying? poems in a conversational performance.? (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as ?the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century? with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961). Bibliographic reference: Crane A2.2

Herpetofauna of Vietnam (Englisch) Gebundene Ausgabe von Van Sang Nguyen (Autor), Ho Thu Cuc (Autor), Quang Truong Nguyen (Autor), Wolfgang B?hme (Vorwort), Kraig Adler (Vorwort)

" Together with his coauthors, Nguyen Quang Truong modernized taxonomic concepts and nomenclature, filled gaps with new knowledge on the herpetofauna, mostly with the astonishingly perpetuating new discoveries which increased and still increase the number of species in this impressive way. The herpetological exploration of Vietnam, originally based on the classic, monographic works (1934 - 1944) of the French author Rene Bourret, was followed by a most intensive period of herpetofaunistic and taxonomic research just in the last few decades. This was carried out by Vietnamese, but also many foreign herpetologists, among them Russian, Canadian, US-American, British and last but not least German teams which often cooperated also among each other. This period of intensified research resulted in the discovery and description of numerous new species and even genera. My colleague and friend Kraig Adler, Cornell University, contributed an own and detailed chapter on this important aspect of the history of Vietnamese herpetology to the present new book. As can be seen from the extended acknowledgement section of this book, numerous colleagues from many countries were helpful and gave information, comments and/or their photographs for this comprehensive checklist of Vietnam's amphibians and reptiles. This remarkable new book reflects the high degree of international cooperation and is thus also a splendid example for other countries with a similarly rich natural heritage. I am happy that, together with the Zoological Garden of Cologne, also my institute is allowed to take part in this fruitful cooperation. Finally, it is also necessary to acknowledge the role of the Publisher. The engagement of 'Chimaira', Frankfurt am Main, in editing this book is highly appreciated as it enables - at last - the international availability of all the information on Vietnam's herpetofauna which has been gathered by the above-mentioned herpetological community. I am sure that this book will be a classic reference for many years to come." Prof. Dr. Wolfgang B?hme

SAILOR DORGAN AND THE JADE MONKEY. (Original typescript).

      - As indicated by the color stamping on the first page of the typescript, this was the originalmanuscript submitted for publication. The typescript was accepted for publication in THE MAGIC CARPET MAGAZINE (edited by Farnsworth Wright) and announced as forthcoming in the January, 1934 issue. Unfortunately the magazine folded with that issue which must've been a very sudden demise indeed, as it got as far as the typesetter's notations — the final stage before publication! REH had just signed on with agent, Otis Adelbert Kline, no doubt in the hopes of more expedient payment and broadening his publication base as there is a printed sticker in the upper l.h., corner — Submitted by Otis Adelbert Kline — an added bonus of having the Otis Adelbert Kline agency on the manuscript; and note too that upon this resubmission, "Sailor Costigan," is lined through and "Sailor Dorgan" is substitutted — nice to have two REH hero names in one manuscript! REH had had three stories previously published in MAGIC CARPET which probably accounted for adopting his pseudonym, Patrick Ervin, as his own name has been crossed through. and his pen-name, Patrick Ervin is now present. The typescript is fifteen pages in length and there are approximately 50 pencilled corrections throughout the manuscript. Although the story did not sell during Howard's lifetime, it did finally appear in the Spring, 1971 issue of THE HOWARD COLLECTOR and in the 1974 FAX Publication hardbound, THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF DENNIS DORGAN. Original REH manuscript material is rare — and a complete one not missing pages is extremely rare — and that is not a term I flippantly use — they seldom come on the open market but are more often passed from private collector to private collector. The typescript is fifteen pages, approximately 5000 words, in length, housed in a sturdy cloth traycase with an inner chemise; each page in a mylar sleeve. Very good + condition.         LA CUCINA ITALIANA. "Mangiar meglio... Spender meno". Giornale di gastronomia per famiglie e buongustai. Fondatrice Delia Notari.

Tipografia Giornale d'Italia, 1934-1942.

        Tender is the Night

Ex-library, with a rather attractive period label to the front board proclaiming this fact, as well as a number to the spine and numerous stamps throughout the book. The boards are slightly bumped, rubbed and marked. The text block is age toned, slightly foxed and stained and dog-eared. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is in four pieces(not to mention some odd fragments) and has been expertly conserved with minimal tissue backing to the reverse, it is toned and rubbed. In general the condition is fairly appalling, but the book is not without its charm, and such is the rarity of the jacket and the appeal of the bizarre artwork, which is utterly in contrast to that of the U.S. edition, that its many faults can be forgiven.

L'Atlantide.

NEGRO ANTHOLOGY. Made by Nancy Cunard. 1931-1933. ---- With: Milton Howard. Some facts about the Scottsboro case.

FIRST EDITION. First issue binding of rough brown cloth. 4to. Original brown cloth, lettered to spine and upper board in red. Rear board with the map of Black America, again printed in red. Top edge dyed brown. Fully illustrated throughout, including a large fold out colour printed map. A little rubbed at extremities, head of spine creased, spotting and toning to contents, some insect damage to the front endpapers and title page. Aside from the leaves with the insect holes this is a very good copy. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the verso of the front blank, "To Josephine Herbst, Comradely, Nancy Cunard". Herbst (1892-1969) was an American writer and journalist and active member of the Communist Party. She had reported on the Scottsboro Boys case and contributed a piece to this Anthology (On pages 269 to 271), "Lynching in the Quiet Manner" on it. Loosely inserted in this copy is a typed letter signed from Cunard to Herbst reading, "Dear Collaborator, I am glad to be able to send you your copy of the Anthology you helped to make. As you see it is a very large volume and has, consequently, been very expensive to produce. It is therefore my hope that each collaborator will endeavour to secure an order for the sale of one copy, ordered direct from Messrs. Wishart, 9 John Street, Adelphi, London, or the usual booksellers. And, if possible, out of justice to our subject, to arouse interest in the press and reviews. Yours for the freeing of the innocent Scottsboro boys and the true emancipation of Negro peoples, Nancy Cunard". Loosely inserted is a rare 30pp mimeographed document, "Some Facts on the Scottsboro Case" by Milton Howard, dated January 1932, and issued by the Labor Research Association, New York.

Autograph letter signed. Küsnacht, 2. XI. 1934.

1934. Large 4to. 2 pp. In German, to Hedwig Fischer, widow of Samuel Fischer who was Mann's publisher, on his name-imprinted stationery. He writes in part: "I just want to send you a greeting, nothing more. Hardly a day has gone by since we got the death notification in Basel, after the return trip from Lugano, without our speaking of you and your husband, and the shock that we felt at the time continues to reverberate and will for a long time. One had to be braced for this farewell, indeed, ultimately one almost had to be for it; and yet I cannot say how it moved me when it became reality. Nearly four decades of cooperation! I was very attached to the deceased. There was a placid cordiality between us, the way I have rarely experienced it in relationships with people, and hardly ever was there a superficial clouding or disgruntlement. Our characters were compatible, and I always felt that I was the born author for him and he my born publisher. I hinted at some of this in the memorial article, which probably came to your attention in the Sunday supplement of the Basler Nachrichten. It is indeed strange the way I rein in my feelings on such occasions, involuntarily suppressing them and growing cold for the sake of psychology and characterization. I'm just not a poet, but must resort to objectivity and distancing. I wouldn't be surprised if this were painful to you in this case. I am myself more satisfied with the two short pages I sent even now for the [Deutsche] Rundschau's memorial issue for [Peter] Suhrkarnp. May this issue turn out to be a very beautiful monument! From Reisiger, who will be coming to visit us in a few days, we heard that the end was gentle and without consciousness. That's fine and well. And you? How has your heart taken the separation? When one has been living side by side for so long and has shared everything! As soon as one starts thinking about life, the tears start to come. Your publishing house has brought out many beautiful and interesting things recently. Extremely interesting the book on Charlemagne. Döblin is planning an essay on it for the Sammlung, I hear, although emigrants otherwise don't like to mention German books, i.e., published in Germany. But what I read from start to finish and with quite unusual interest, was [Martin] Gumpert's Hahnemann, a life I knew hardly anything about and which in this presentation moved me deeply. Farewell, and be comforted! Give my regards to your children and grandchildren, and regards to you".

Autograph letter signed ("TE Shaw"). Southampton, 18. VII. 1934.

1934. 8vo. 2 pp. and 2 lines on bifolium. "Dear Lady Young I wonder if you (and His Ex.) are still there? Your letter to me sat at 2 Smith Square (Sir H. B. not knowing my whereabouts) till last night, when I called and collected it. I am sorry. Most of my addresses are like that. Would you be so good as to register / T. E. Shaw / Clouds Hill / Moreton / Dorset / as my likeliest spot, in future? It represents my cottage on the heath, which will be home after March when the RAF bring themselves, not reluctantly, to dispense with my help? I'm sorry not to have seen you. I wanted, while you were yet in Nyasa-land, to beg of His Ex. The rectangular skin of a small (1 sq. yard) lion, for my hearth-rug. But Ronald Storrs whom I saw at Southampton about a month ago told me you had been promoted to his province, and that there were no lions. Ronald was physically a very sick man. Mentally he was fighting hard to keep brisk... too hard for his health, I fear. The wreck of an old companion is too near a sight for sorrow, even. I hope Africa suits, after your trial of Asia and Europe. My respects to the Governor! Tell him I saw the fraudulent Abdulla, the other day. Exactly as he was, body & mind. Now, that's the way. / Yours sincerely TE Shaw / A poor letter: but I picture you again in Africa, and my squib spluttering in the void". - Between 1916 to 1918, Abdullah I of Jordan worked with the British guerrilla leader T. E. Lawrence (with whom he had actually never jarred), and played a key role as architect and planner of the Great Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, leading guerrilla raids on garrisons. From 1921 until his assassination in 1951, Abdullah ruled Jordan, first as Emir under a British Mandate from 1921 to 1946, then as King of an independent nation from 1946 onwards.

Gas!" The Story of the Special Brigade.

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons Ltd., 1934 - Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Jacket with a few old tape repairs on verso, spine toned, panels lightly soiled, a few chips and nicks and creases (small portion torn from bottom of front panel. An excellent copy with the publisher's 8 pp. publicity brochure loosely inserted. Portrait frontispiece of the author, 20 illustrations from photographs on 15 plates, 7 coloured maps (5 folding), 2 graphs. First edition, first impression, uncommon in the dust jacket. From the library of Captain W. H. Livens, with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper; tipped-in to the verso of the front free endpaper is a typed letter signed from E. Stephen Brooks of The Times sending this as a review copy and requesting a review for both The Times and the TLS (dated 24 October 1934, The Times embossed letterhead); this is accompanied by Livens review (clipped by him from The Times, dated in his hand 30/10/34 and initialled at the foot). On the front free endpaper he has noted four references in the text relating to the Livens Projector, one of the most significant British tactical innovations on the Western Front. As Foulkes comments on page 87: "Livens. was a 'go-getter', and his name will often appear in the following pages". An important association copy: William Howard Livens (1889-1964) "was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in September 1914. After a spell as brigade signals officer he went to Chatham where he was in charge of motorcyclists. It was here in the spring of 1915, after the first German gas attack on the western front that, on his own initiative, he began to experiment with weapons for trench warfare. Soon he was asked to select recruits for the special companies of the Royal Engineers, then being formed in France by Colonel C. H. Foulkes for the purpose of retaliating with gas. He himself later went to France and became one of the company commanders. [in France he experimented with the means of delivering a gas attack:] Livens found a quantity of waste steel tubing which was made up into 8 inch projectors. Their range was just under a mile. The projector and bomb charged with lethal phosgene gas were first used at Beaumont Hamel on 13 November 1916 against a system of deep dugouts. The gas saturated the enemy shelters, inflicting many casualties and showing what could be done by firing salvos. Increased production of the new weapon made a much larger operation possible at Vimy Ridge on 4 April 1917. Livens observed from an aircraft 2000 detonated electrically and saw the gas travel 7 kilometres behind the German front line. Projectors became the principal allied gas weapon until the introduction of longer ranged shells charged with mustard and phosgene gas" (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition]

Die Tätowierung in den deutschen Hafenstädten. Ein Versuch zur Erfassung ihrer Formen und ihres Bildgutes

Bremen: G. Winters Buchhandlung, 1934. First edition. 8vo, 111 pp, photographically illustrated wraps. Illustrated with b/w photographs. Text in German. The first and only edition of this important study on the tattoos and tattoo parlors of the German port cities. The book is illustrated with both close up photographs of some unique and beautiful work, but also depicts the shops, tattoo artists, and streets on which the tattoo studios were found. The footnotes and citations are among the most thorough of all the early modern tattoo books. Samuel Steward cites Hortst Streckenbach's opinion that this work, along with Joest, were the best German tattoo studies, especially with regard to the erotic aspects of tattoos [Steward, p. 195], and Jane Caplan cites it as "The outstanding German study." (Becker & Wetzell, p. 356 - footnote). The book is a remarkable accomplishment made poignant as shortly after the book was published every tattoo parlor in Germany was closed by order of Hitler, with the exception of a single shop in Hamburg, whose proprietor had to sign an agreement to only tattoo foreigners, as Hitler believed that tattoos were an impure imposition on aryan skin [Steward, p. 356]. Rare. OCLC locates only two holdings at the time of cataloguing. Wraps soiled, with tearing to head and foot of spine, leading to a loss of 2" to the paper covering the spine at the crown, and the book title inked to spine, and some light spotting to title page. Good only, but an intact example of a book that rarely appears on the market.

Portrait photograph of the singer Fritzi Massary

New York, 1934. Half-length frontal portrait. Gelatin silver print. 1 vols. 24.3 x 16.3 cm. (approximately 9-5/8 x 6-3/8 inches). Fine. Atelier stamp on verso, and docketed in pen, giving the name of the sitter ("Fritzi Massary, who sings 'Jede Frau hat irgendeine Sehnsucht', the date, and the print reference ("XXII G 12"). Half-length frontal portrait. Gelatin silver print. 1 vols. 24.3 x 16.3 cm. (approximately 9-5/8 x 6-3/8 inches). The Viennese-born singer and actress Fritzi Massary (1882-1969), was one of the icons the operetta and of silent films in the golden age of the twenties, and the most celebrated German-language singer of her day. In 1932, rising anti-Semitism drove her out of Germany to England, where she briefly pursued her career (Noel Coward wrote OPERETTE for her) and then to the United States, finally settling into the rich milieu of the German-speaking emigrés in Beverley Hills, where she died in 1969. Van Vechten's portrait of her at age 55, soon after her arrival in the States, beautifully frames the dignity and elegance of her features by her black cap, black hair, and black dress. This image, inscribed to Mauriber in 1944, is not in the Library of Congress collection (which has another from the same session). From the Estate of Saul Mauriber, Van Vechten's assistant, and the editor/compiler of PORTRAITS: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF CARL VAN VECHTEN (1978); EXTRAVAGANT CROWD: Carl Van Vechten's Portraits of Women (Beinecke Library, Exhibition Catalogue, 2003)
