Photograph Album Documenting the 1934 Arctic Cruise of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, USCGC Northland

Arctic Circle, 1934. Photograph Album. Very Good. This album (approximately 8" x 14") contains approximately 150 photographs of the USCGC Northland and its crew while on its annual Arctic cruise to Point Barrow, Alaska in 1934. The attractive leather "Logalbum" cover features a multi-color relief illustration of the Northland at sea. Photographs range in size between approximately 2.5" x 3.5" and 4" x 6". The USCGC Northland was a gunboat especially designed for Arctic waters; it was the last cruising cutter equipped with a tall-masted sailing rig. Each year between 1929 and 1938, the ship patrolled the Bering Sea performing a myriad of federal functions including gathering military intelligence, enforcing the law, transporting teachers and Public Health Service personnel, surveying coastlines, etc. The ship later served with distinction in World War II, capturing the first naval prize of the war, sinking a German submarine in the Davis Strait, and successfully assaulting a small German radio station in Greenland. Following the war, the ship was sold as scrap but instead was purchased by Zionists and use to transport Jewish refugees to Palestine. In 1948 she was named Eliat and became the first flagship of the fledgling Israeli Navy. The photographs in this album document the voyage beginning with the ship's departure from Seattle; its inland passage through British Columbia and Alaska; sailing through the Aleutians; crossing the Arctic Circle, stops at Mount Ballyhoo, Dutch Harbor, Nome, Unalaskan, and Fox Inlet on Somerset Island (which happens to be the setting of Peter Freuchen's classic novel and film, Eskimo). Some of the photos include: the Northland under sail, the wardroom, the bridge with an able seaman at the helm, rowing the ship's walrus skin boat, the radio room, deck scenes, the ship icebound near Nome, setting the mainsail, view from the crow's nest, street scenes of Nome, firing a machine gun, firing the port and starboard guns on the 4th of July, and more. The album and photographs are in nice shape. One of the album closure snaps has been repaired. Some photographs have been removed from the album.

Autograph letter signed "Milhaud" to an unidentified male correspondent

The performance to which Milhaud refers probably occured on September 11, 1934 at the Teatro La Fenice as part of the Venice Biennale. The program included the Italian premiere of the Symphonic Suite from Maximilien and other pieces by Berg, Stravinsky, Pizzetti, and Lambert. With the exception of the Berg, each composer conducted his own work. "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove Music Online.. 2 pp. Oblong octavo (ca. 103 x 138 mm.). Dated September 4 [?1934]. In ink on cardstock with "L'Enclos Aix-en-Provence Téléphone 99" printed at upper left corner. In French (with translation). Milhaud writes about an upcoming performance of his symphonic suite from his opera Maximilien, probably at the Venice Biennale. He regrets that his correspondent did not order material for it from Universal Edition, but is nonetheless very happy that "in spite of so many difficulties everything is arranged." He includes information about the suite within quotation marks. "... Because I can do nothing without the material, I have set my departure for Friday, and will be in Venice on Saturday. Here is some information about the suite: 'This symphonic suite comprises the dramatic interludes and the Overture from the opera Maximilien... premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1932. The Suite, performed for the first time in Italy, at the Venice Biennale, comprises 4 interludes (the last of which is a funeral song) and a Finale'... " With several autograph corrections. Slightly worn and soiled.

Contains 11 large sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 9.5" x 11" affixed to stiff gray paper with captions on two photos. Album is very good or better with toning on the page edges and a few photos have been removed with near fine or better photographs. An album of photographs from Nazareth House, an orphanage in Plymouth in the United Kingdom in 1935. The photos appear to be taken as a form of promotion displaying the rooms of the orphanage as well as the girls who lived there. Throughout the album are staged photographs of tables set for breakfast, rows of perfectly made beds, the chapel, and a large classroom. Towards the end of the album the girls are featured in class and playing outside. One photo shows a group of little girls dressed as fairies and another shows some of the girls with a nun chaperone looking out in to the water that surrounded the grounds. A group photo shows all the girls who were housed at the orphanage in 1934.Nazareth House, founded in the 1870s, was operated by the Sisters of Nazareth, sometimes referred to as the Poor Sisters of Nazareth. They had orphanages throughout England, all of which were called Nazareth House, and were home to not only abandoned girls but also those thought to be uncontrollable or accused of petty crimes. The girls were taught basic lessons including arithmetic, reading, and writing, as well as the "feminine arts" of sewing and knitting. In the late 1990s the sisters were accused of child abuse and of sending 111 children to Australia to "spread Catholicism."A collection of large, arresting photographs of a girl's orphanage in the 1930s.         Charles W A Scott & Tom Campbell Black SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH aboard the liner RMS Orford (Dec 1934) returning to the UK after their record-breaking flight to Australia

n/a, 1934. Ephemera. Used; Good. Ephemera; English language; Signed; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; good condition; extremely unusual, possibly unique (at least for purchase) piece of aviation history - a 104 mm x 79 mm photograph showing the two pilots (Scott is on the left) returning by liner to the UK from Australia after their victory in the London to Melbourne Centenary Air Race and SIGNED BY BOTH MEN; inscription on reverse of photo reads 'On board R.M.S Orford Dec 1934' and may possibly be in Scott's hand but this cannot be verified; the photograph was found in the autobiography of Master Mariner J F Ruthven of the Orient Line (which owned the Orford) which suggests the photo may have been taken (and the signatures procured) by a member of the Orford's crew; the two pilots won what was officially known as the MacRobertson Trophy Air Race in 71 hours, 20th-23rd October 1934, which feat included them achieving the then fastest ever flight from Britain to Australia (52 hours 33 minutes, which knocked over 100 hours off the previous record and which still stands for piston-powered aircraft); the race is widely considered the most important air race of them all and generated global coverage at the time; Scott & Black flew a De Havilland DH 88 Comet, which aircraft heavily influenced the design of the wartime Mosquito. Your book will be securely packed and promptly dispatched from our UK warehouse. All international orders are sent Royal Mail airmail.

        A Cool Million [West's Sister's Copy]

NY: Covici Friede. (1934). The third book by the author of Miss Lonelyhearts and the classic Hollywood novel The Day of the Locust. This is West's sister's copy, with her ownership signature, "Laura Weinstein," on the front flyleaf. West dedicated this copy to his college friend, the comic writer S.J. Perelman, who married Laura in 1929; she was Perelman's co-writer on several screenplays, including Around the World in Eighty Days and two Marx Brothers films, among others; she would later be the dedicatee of West's The Day of the Locust. Nathanael West was born "Nathan Weinstein." Although his sister, Lorraine Weinstein, would later change her name to Laura West and then to Laura Perelman, this book and other of her brother's books that came out of S.J. Perelman's library (and are now in the Special Collections of Brown University) were signed as "Laura Weinstein." Modest foxing to boards, endpages and page edges; a very good copy in a very good dust jacket with a bit of sunning on and near the spine and a few very small edge chips. A much nicer than usual copy of this novel and a unique family association copy as well as being owned by the wife of the dedicatee; one of the best copies imaginable. In a custom clamshell case. First Edition. Hardcover.

'T. E. Lawrence' In Arabia and After.

London: Jonathan Cape, , 1934. Octavo, original red orange buckram, matching top-stain, title gilt to the spine and front board. In the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece after Augustus John and 11 other plates, 5 folding maps. A touch cocked, light toning, else very good in rubbed and soiled jacket, lacking part of the front panel and spine. First edition. A superb association copy of this highly influential early biography which was central to the creation of the Lawrence myth. Inscribed by the author to his secretary on the front free endpaper, "To Doris Josselyn, 'Adjutant-General to the Forces' by which this book was carried forward and the objective toilfully attained - with all good wishes from B.H. Liddell Hart, 26th February 1934"; and with a short pencilled note from Lawrence, dated 26.VI.33, loosely inserted, "Miss D. Josselyn, You will see that it's Liddell Hart's fault if ["that" struck out] all this mess of scribbling around his text affronts your eye. He asked for it, and for it to be sent to you. Soit - T.E.S." Liddell Hart submitted the typescript, and/or proofs of the book to Lawrence for his critique, which was duly forthcoming (see King's College, LHMA, Liddell 9/13). B.H. Liddell Hart was one of the most influential military thinkers of the twentieth century, and considered that his friend Lawrence "was more deeply steeped in knowledge of war than any other general of the First World War"; a judgement that has been seen as hyperbolic by many in the intervening 80 years, but which in view of current thinking on the increasing prevalence of asymmetric warfare, and counterinsurgency operations seems remarkably prescient.
